found my sticker album from 1980

I was just talking about my sticker collection. I had nearly 3,000 stickers and used to trade them at recess. My parents tossed all my scrapbooks, sticker books, and notes and such.

Oh ma god! Growing up, our neighbor worked at a sticker factory and he’d bring home boxes and boxes of these stickers. Just roll and rolls and he’d just give them away. We (the neighborhood kids) would plaster everything in our path with stickers, and it felt like living next to Santa clause. I’d go to school and be the envy of everyone with my paper bag book covers covered in stickers. A core memory just brought up out of nowhere, this was unexpected and amazing!

The idea of a “sticker book” unlocked some long dormant memory for me. In first grade or so, EVERYONE had a sticker book. Well, I didn’t. I tried several times to designate a notebook my “sticker book”. But I only had the crappy stickers I got from Sunday school or the dentist. Never the cool puffy stickers, or shiny ones, and I had only the most mundane scratch and sniff stickers. “Tap Water”. “Dishes”. “Bedtime routine”.

“Hey Ben! Scratch this sticker and then smell it! It smells exactly like bedtime!”

Sticker books seemed to gradually lose popularity, only to be briefly resurrected with the advent of Garbage Pail Kids. Of course, the concerned mothers and attention-seeking evangelical zealots made sure to shut those guys down pretty quickly. By mid-third grade, being caught in possession of a GPK was equivalent to being caught with an ounce of weed and an untraceable pistol.

I guess you could say, my life of crime all started with an unmet desire for a sticker book.

We used to buy stickers at Cost Plus (aka World Market)! I think they had fancy European stickers. I don’t even remember where we got scratch and sniff ones from. But yes I had a sticker album just like this, but for day-to-day trading at school we all had our own handmade/stapled books made of waxed paper. I also loved puffy stickers, especially from the Sanrio store. What memories!

You could go to a shop and they had rolls and rolls of different stickers and they would cut you off a length of stickers! Those cats! Same shape, different color! So many I recognize! I never stuck mine on anything, I just have a stack of them…somewhere

One of my biggest regrets is getting rid of my childhood sticker books. I had all the classics, fuzzy velvet stickers, scratch-n-sniff, Garfield, Care Bears, glow-in-the-dark, holograph, and those foil stickers you got from the vending machine at the grocery store. I had two books that were completely covered in stickers. Damn, I miss them.

I have so many stickers now and I said to my daughter, I should make a sticker book lol. I loved mine when I was a kid. The stickers I have now are from trips and bars, etc;, but it would still be fun.
