I once heard that the banana flavored runts are based off of the.sweeter "Big Mike" variety of bananas that used to be extremely popular but were wiped out by a blight in the 1950's. It wasn't fake banana flavor, it was flavor based on the Gros Michel Banana, which is now extinct. The ones we get at the grocery store are Cavendish Bananas, and they have a different flavor. Unfortunately, a fungus is endangering the Cavendish cultivar, and since they are all genetic clones (like haas avocados) they are particularly succeptible.

As kids, we were given coins (germ covered) to put in a machine and crank a handle (germ covered) where we reached our hands into a little slot that all other kids did and popped the candies into our mouths.
