When did all Easter eggs become flat?

Posted by Dadda_Green@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 73 comments

I’m sure I remember proper shaped Easter eggs as a kid. When did shrinkflation ruin chocolate eggs?

Problem with eggs is that you are basically shipping air, big box, tiny bit of chocolate If you flatten the egg you can get exactly the same amount of chocolate but save fortune on packaging, transportation and of course warehousing. Next year’s eggs are probably going into production today and millions need to be produced shipped and stored I used to sell meringues, shipping them from Scotland to Leeds. By reducing the pallet size from 6 layers to 5 we were able to double stack the pallets in the lorry and ship 50% more meringues per load. A load cost £600, and took like 1000 cases, or £0.60 per case in shipping. This came down to £0.40 per case. We saved over £100,000 in shipping thanks to my solution I got no reward, apparently that was the kind of idea I was paid to come up with, I came up with no more ideas

I can see that this is partially true. But surely if they were that bothered about efficiency they'd reduce the size of the box surrounding the egg. There's a lot of wasted space and extra cardboard. Which is all about making the product look bigger. As is the flat egg.

This - the change is a _good_ type of shrinkflation; same product weights, more profit.

Of all the heinous shrinkflation nonsense going on, flattening easter eggs so they look bigger when viewed straight on is the most egregious.

What on earth are you on about?

When I was a kid in the 60s they used to be huge and full of sweets. Why do they have to ruin everything?
View on Reddit #83190010

Belle_TainSummer@reddit

Not all of them, just cadbury easter eggs. You can still get proper egg shaped egg with other brands.
View on Reddit #83124607

SpaceTimeCapsule89@reddit

I didn't find that? The Cadburys ones were full proper egg shaped and it was the mars (maltesers, galaxy etc) that was flat
View on Reddit #83126710

veryblocky@reddit

The £4.50 Cadbury ones are egg shaped, but the £7.50 and £11 ones are not. When we went out to buy them, the £7.50 eggs were on sale for £3.50, but the £4.50 eggs were full price, so we went with the bigger ones.

Mine wasn't

I found the opposite this year. My maltesers one was flat but my mini eggs one was normal egg shaped.

Yeah I’m done with cadburys eggs to be honest Until they go back to how they were I shan’t be buying any more

My Terry's Chocolate Orange one was fully inflated and wrapped with a folded sheet of foil, like it should be.
View on Reddit #83124350

Raisinsandfairywings@reddit

I found that too. Typical, I don’t even like chocolate orange and that’s the only one that was a proper egg shape.

Funny, I am eating one right now (purchased yesterday) and it's flat!

I’m so confused… wdym flat? I fear my brain is not braining Ok, I googled it… FLEGGS 💀😭😭 - I would honestly feel… idk, I was gonna say fobbed off, but if the “flegg” is solid chocolate then maybe not 🤔 However, if it's just a flat fronted hollowed out egg, then I'd be a bit pissed ngl 😆 https://preview.redd.it/btq920iqbnug1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ff3d1ba699a5bf59e382f1fd13e1a4785774b019

It's not completely flat, just... Flattened? Squished? It's shaped like an almond and not like an egg. Chocolate near the "seams" is thick, but the rest is very thin. At least it still tastes great!

View on Reddit #83132014

ImnotUK@reddit

No, it's hollow with small chocolate orange bits inside. Just shrinkflated :(
View on Reddit #83132264

Ok_Victory_2977@reddit

Oh... That's very misleading of them to write a "slab of chocolate" 😏 half of these things don't even say chocolate when you look a the back now, just "chocolate flavour" as they don't contain enough cocoa to be marketed as chocolate
View on Reddit #83158055

Plastic_Length8618@reddit

Yes they’re more like an almond than an egg now. Lots of foods have become flater. Butter is as wide and tall as when it was 250g, but now it is 200g (for the same price), it is much less deep. The same as cheese. A mere slice now for £4. But wide as ever to masquerade as a full block.
View on Reddit #83124377

CoolRanchBaby@reddit

I buy the giant roll of Isigny Ste Mère French butter at Costco. It’s delicious, and 500g usually for £3.99-£5.00 (the price varies but always good deal for what it is). https://preview.redd.it/q5v4a30b6qug1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6c26c7046b5ad5a04e7dba8feca4b1dc29a03ae6

Bought some anchor the other day for baking cos it was on offer, 200g! Didn’t have enough for my vicky sponge!
View on Reddit #83149605

Amulet_Angel@reddit

Kerry Gold and Yeo Valley is now 200g. I bake a lot, so I buy a lot of butter. I stopped buying Kerry Gold because 200g vs 250g makes a huge difference when it comes to £/kg, but now they have the 500g blocks so it's back on the menu with much more reasonable price. Supermarket own brands are all 250g, President and other French butters are still 250g.
View on Reddit #83132057

The_Bravinator@reddit

Hmm, I thought so too, but I just checked... The supermarket brand I buy is still 250g (which is why I didn't notice anything), but all of the name brand options are indeed 200g now. Which I suspect means that the supermarket own brand will soon follow.
View on Reddit #83125285

geeered@reddit

If you think that's bad, the butter I normally buy comes in 6.2g blocks!

DivasDayOff@reddit

Got an egg shaped one here (Terry's Chocolate Orange.) I'm more curious as to why they insist on an empty, whole egg and a separate bar of bag of treats, as opposed to 2 egg halves with the treats inside, like they used to do (certainly back in the 1970s and 80s.) There was a joy to the treat actually being in the egg, and the egg provided as 2 separate halves meant you could just flake pieces off as you wanted to eat them, rather than having to smash the whole thing and then go chasing the fragments.
View on Reddit #83154805

fsuk@reddit

I think this is less about shrinkflation and more about reducing the volume of air and packaging.  Less packaging and less air means its more economical to distribute, you can fit more on a lorry
View on Reddit #83153175

hoganpaul@reddit

They made them flat-ish so that they take up less space and they could ship more of them on a pallet. Just reducing the box size by 1cm means they can get more product in less space.

I had a Cadbury Twirl egg which was great, a chocolate orange egg which was also great, Londt eggs and bunnies which are always great, and then there was the Mars bar egg which tasted so disgusting that even my kid didn't want to eat it, so we ended up throwing it away. I'm not a fan of these flatter eggs, what a rip-off!
View on Reddit #83140362

I'm sure it's been happening for a couple of years now, I took a photo of a flat egg last year or the year before and was like wtf. Shared it around but no one else seemed to notice at the time?
View on Reddit #83138715

It's just certain brands. We had Lindt, Terry's and Thorntons and they were all proper shaped. It's all been Cadbury's and Mars that I've seen online all flat and weird.

I thought someone had opened your egg, eaten half and re-wrapped it pretending they only sell the fronts now.. not that I’d had that idea earlier when I realised my partner hadn’t touched his yet!
