I'm 53 (1973) but still feel 16 inside...

My older brother (1971) tells me he feels like he's still a senior in high school and he's 54.
Our baby sister (1975) still acts like a teenager and she's 51.
Does anyone else feel the same way we do? Is this attitude (for lack of a better word) better than being a cranky closed-minded middle-age person?

100%. I am young at help but arthritis sucks. I feel like a teen till something hurts. I play in the mud with my grandsons. Right down in the dirt beside them. Still riding my hog and chasing pretty women.

It must be the Gen X in us all. I'm 53 going on 23. It still surprises me to see the gray-haired old timer staring at me through his progressive lenses when I peer into a mirror.

The body ages but the spirit does not
chgonwburbs@reddit
I'm nearly 54 going on my mid 20s. Still listen to 80s new wave, still enjoy a drink/smoke/toke, still in decent shape, and luckily in better shape financially than I was in my actual mid 20s.
NYCphilliesBlunt@reddit
I have to remind myself of my age almost daily.
Fair-Wishbone-1190@reddit
I'm also 53 and I feel like I'm still in my 20s mentally but my body reminds me every single day that I'm not as young as what my mind feels like. It's a very weird dichotomy. I feel like I would want to go to the bar still every night & party it up, even though I don't drink anymore. And when I get around a group of 21 to 25-year-olds I fit in perfectly mentally but then I realize I'm 53 and it sucks and I just can't do the things that they can do anymore.

yep, feel the same way. i mean, not necessarily like a teenager, but certainly 30-35.
it's always a bit unnverving to me when i meet a colleague or two and think, "i'd love to go to happy hour with these peeps," then realize they're my kid's age and ain't no one wanna party with their parents.
setting aside the horror when i'm walking around with a vision of myself in my mind's eye and then actually look in a mirror.
EfficientCable8377@reddit
Yeah. I know people that think they look younger and act younger vut honestly, they are acting their age. People aren't as old as you thought they were when you were younger. But those younger people still think you are older. My son has said he can't believe he was a teenager when I was his age. He said I seemed so much older and mature. But when I was his age....I wasn't. I just seemed it to a teenager. I think he seems way more mature than I was at that age and he is unmarried and childfree.
ofthrees@reddit
sooo true. for example, as a fan of the golden girls from the minute the pilot aired, those ladies seemed soooo old to me. now, aside from the grey hair we seem to no longer accept, i understand blanche, for instance. at the time, it seemed weird that some old lady would still enjoy fucking.
at her age now... yep. get it.

I'm 50... my millennial coworkers say I act younger than them... still partying hard... still workin'.... no wrinkles... I mean really... my millennial coworkers do not drink, and they do not go out! And they look older than me... I'm already planning my summer concerts I plan to go to... Was out all weekend with my husband and his college best friend at a lager festival. Parrrrrr-tay!

55 (1971) still have a twisted sense of humor, will forever follow my favorite singer, love going to concerts though I must have a seat (the thought of only standing for hours makes even the thought ache), still have favorite 'kid' food (coco pebbles hit the spot on occasion), and over all until I look in the mirror and see the slight change feel as though I am still 20. I just have what I didn't then... The "I don't give a fuck" attitude.
TallStarsMuse@reddit
Huh I definitely don’t fit with the majority of these answers. I’m 57 and feel like I’m 57. I think I’ve pretty much always felt my age, except some in high school and college when I sometimes felt much older than all my hard partying friends. I expect to see myself when I look in the mirror. I listen to both older and newer music, though more podcasts and news. I try to wear updated styles. Not fashionable, just reasonably well put together, but almost all of my clothes are from thrift stores. I do have a hard time remembering whether it’s skinny or baggy jeans that are in this year.
EfficientCable8377@reddit
I am constantly messaging my neice and asking if certain clothes are still in style. I realized the other day that she is almost 40 now. I need to find a younger person because she is hitting the age where we no longer care
TallStarsMuse@reddit
I have two 20 year old kids. Mostly they’re just good for after the fact, as in “Mom, that outfit looks awful on you and it’s really out of style too.”
EfficientCable8377@reddit
That is what I need. I don't always care that much about style but how it looks on me but for certain things, I want to be in style. But I also know I will look stupid if I dress too young. I remember those moms...and I am now grandma age.
ChemistryCocktail@reddit
You listen to older music, podcasts, and shop at thrift stores? You're not 57... You're a hipster 🤣🤣
TallStarsMuse@reddit
lol. Always wished I’d been a boomer because I envied the hippies.
the_natis@reddit
'75 like your sister. Still feel like in my 20s and still open to new experiences, new music, and still collect toys. Best friend sent a pic of us from 20 years ago during a 2 week drive through Europe. I mostly look the same (maybe just a bit tired today vs then).
actual-trevor@reddit
I'm 59, but I only feel like it when I get up from a chair, or try to lift my right arm above my shoulder. Otherwise, yeah... still a teenager on the inside.

fastballcdm2019@reddit
I’m 57, yes! Farts are still funny. I still play video games. But I don’t physically feel 16, when I get a sprain or twist it takes forever to heal. In literally feel like there’s nothing good about getting older.
SomethingClever70@reddit
I felt the exact same way, until the year both my parents died. I felt like I finally grew up.
EfficientCable8377@reddit
I get that. Being the oldest generation in my family made it hit. And that my mom only had 28 years left at my age. My dad died 2 years older than me. Made me also look back and realize all the life I have lived in 28 years. But the years go faster the older I get.
Quick_Discipline_432@reddit
Exactly. I’ve told this to others. I never really felt like a ‘grown up’ till my parents died. I lost them both 11 weeks apart. That level of grief took away that care free attitude that once kept me young. I became the stoic ‘strong silent type’ after that. I always wanted to be the strong silent type until I understood what is behind that layer of stoicism.
Fishfry12@reddit
Yeah I feel this too…when my parents passed everything changed, I dunno
TaroSad@reddit
This right here. I am 58 and grew up the day my mother when my mother died.
LeighofMar@reddit
I don't feel any particular age. I feel like I'm just living my life. I'm still me, just a mature version and I'm loving it. Bought a new e-bike and I'm zipping all over now, treating myself to a frappe, and reading my book on a bench swing in the park. Everything young me would do except I have my own money now and a better bike.
EfficientCable8377@reddit
And for me, the big difference is that now I don't care if people see me sitting alone somewhere. I don't care what people think about me period. Completely different than when I was younger.

EfficientCable8377@reddit
Yeah. I want to go clubbing but realize that in my early 20s that I thought the 31 year old woman that was hanging with us was a little weird to be out clubbing. And old. So much 55 year old ass would look ancient. My ex would say how he thinks he fits in with the younger crowd and they didn't even notice that he was in his 40s. They knew....they just didn't say anything. Probably because he could afford to buy them drinks!

I am also 53 and have fraternal twins in 8th grade. Many parents in school thought I was 35 years old, thanks to my youthful looks, though I have some gray hair. However, my friend and teammate from our high school girls volleyball team shared the same experience you do with some believing she's their grandma... She's also 53 and have fraternal twins but she looked 66 with all the wrinkles on her face. And she was the most exotically beautiful girl on our team (according to my brother, who had a crush on her)... and of all people she was the one who aged quickly. :/

As toxic as my mom was/is, one of the cool things she told me is that "Age is just a number." And she's right.
We're as young/old as we want to be. I think that sometimes, people forget how to be young & fun. You don't have to be a jerk and get drunk. Just teach your nieces/nephews/kids/whatever that jumping in mud puddles and making a mess is okay kinda thing.
I can easily say that it was only a week ago that I splashed through a mud puddle just because I wanted to. I still kick up leaves, just because it's fun. I'm old and crippled up with arthritis but I still remember how to skip and play hopscotch.
These are silly little things but I think it's good for our mental health to be silly once in awhile and laugh just because.
My mom is 84 now but for her 75th birthday, she wanted to go skydiving. So I took her skydiving. She had the time of her life - I've never seen her so happy and laughing.

Do you drink? I recently heard that when you start drinking alcohol regularly, you stop growing mentally/emotionally.
So if you started drinking alcohol regularly at 25 years old (or whatever age), then your mind is stuck as a 25 year old. Or for some people at 14 😂.
Iknewsomeracists@reddit
I must be 13 then.
Coyomojo@reddit
That was conversation we had. A problem with some alcoholics is their mind had stopped developing at such a young age, so no wonder they had problems coping with life.
Especially us Gen X or older, we lived in a time where drinking (and smoking) at a young age was so normal.
marythegr8@reddit
We were expected to act grown up when we were in our early teens. So thats what we do, we are responsible in the ways that we get the grown up stuff like bills and maintenance done, like we always have, but we are really just teenagers inside here. Letting loose like we are young keeps us young.

My personal attitude will always be stuck at about the age of 22. But with each passing year, now at 56, my body is definitely reminding me of my physical age and fighting back from those completely careless years from about 15-25 where I did whatever I wanted with diet, partying and cigs. Being stuck at 22 does however help me to relate more to the Gen Z employees being hired at work now who are about that age. They live in awe when they ask me questions about my life in the 80’s and 90’s. 52 and mentally I still feel like I did in the 90s, which makes it easy for me to make friends half my age. I still dress like I did back then. Physically though, I feel like I'm IN my 90s! I was rather unkind to my body when I was younger, and now it's repaying the favor.

I haven't felt much past 17 my whole life. I bought my first house in 1999. I remember walking into HomeDepot and having a total panic attack as I looked down the store. Flooring, paint, plumbing, electrical, hardware, lumber. Holy crap, then all the snow melted and revealed all this outside crap I was now in charge of....spent the summer in the lawn and garden department. I found all that adulting to be tiresome. Now I love doing all of it. Even clearing the snow, so I must have aged somewhere along the line. Im probably more like 25 now.

Yes, very much so. I'm the same person I was at 16. I've just been doing it for much longer. I attributed this mainly to my never having married, had kids or a proper career to drastically affect my approach to life. Perhaps, as this appears to be so common among my age group, that's not right.

Have you ever passed through your high school campus? Or even your elementary/middle school? Every single time, going there instantly makes you feel like you're still a student there. My brother (like you, born in '71) took a walk through our high school grounds recently on a weekend when the whole place had literally no one. He told me when looking around, he still sees the images of his friends and classmates walking, talking, some sitting on the lawn grass hanging out. Including those, whom he knew, had sadly passed away over the years.
SadCheesecake2539@reddit
I've driven by it. Looked at it from Google Maps and showed my current gf where my classes were, the trail we took at lunch to get the biggest, greatest slice of pizza, where my locker was, and where we'd go to smoke. Its on lock down when not in session, so no roaming around. Same with my Jr. High and elementary (now a charter school). Big bummer but probably good. All of my high-school memories include my ex-wife. Still good memories, I just don't need to go down that road.

Considering how little a typical teenager understands about the world, relationships, and life in general, I’m curious what you mean when you say that you feel that age inside. IMHO Gen Xers had so many environmental and social changes, we had to adapt so frequently, that the effects of aging is just... rolling with it all like another day in life.
Last year docs discovered I had a small tumour on my kidney. Okay. What do we do? We can do robotic laproscopic surgery. Okay, cool. I want a video. Then they discovered another tumour in my lung. Okay. What do we do? Surgery. Okay.
Yep. In one year, two tumours, three biopsies, a partially collapsed lung, two surgeries, one bout of sepsis. I was offered some time with a social worker for therapy. Ah. Thanks, but I had a harder time growing up in the 70s/80s with two older brothers and a complete lack of parental supervision!

I totally relate here but also I'm reminded of some podcast I came across once describing how time has been jumbled up for us, where the 90s were essentially the last decade we all counted and then things went sideways with the nomenclature of 'twenty oh 6' and the like. Just that the 50s 60s 70s 80s were all their own decades but it hasn't seemed like that since 2000 brought a slightly different scheme. Also I heard once that anyone 'acting their age' is really just 'acting' and we don't play that. Or something.

1974 , I feel the same I did in my 20’s. I’ve gained a lot more wisdom that I apply to my 20yr old mentality. Question : those of you that say your body feels much older , besides some sicknesses what else do you think contributed to feeling (body wise ) much older? I have to say I always thought playing sports when I was younger and being a painter and electrician in adulthood would take its toll on my body. I wonder if that has helped me , staying active. I still fly up and down ladders , wake board all summer and snowboard all winter. The only thing I can complain about is my knee has been giving me troubles . Mentally, I always felt like an old soul since my early teens...and don't feel like my personality has changed much. I have also kept a healthy active lifestyle, so in some ways I am more fit than I was in my teens or 20's. I actually think the best decision I made was buying a house in my late 20's and having a dog. Everything else after, in which I thought it would make me happier, has just made things more complicated and I yearn for those simpler times....but I digress.

That’s how I feel at 50. Recently got my wife an e-bike and someone gave us one. We already had Mtn bikes and I love riding it. We took the e-bikes to a local park for some trail riding and to check out the new pump track. First time on the track and I tried transitioning from one bowl to the next. Didn’t work out, but kept riding. Lol. At work, I prefer climbing around on top of trucks instead of climbing down and back up on the other side. Sometimes jump from one truck to the next when I can’t shimmy down the side of it.

I may feel physically old sometimes from almost three decades of physical work (although physically I’m feeling better than I have in a decade since I transitioned to a desk job a couple of months ago), but my mentality is still that of my much younger self. I always took it as a point of pride when my daughters would tell me their friends liked me because I “don’t act old like their dads.”
ZippyNomad@reddit
I stopped worrying about how I'm expected to act for too long to worry about age restricting activities, as I'm sidelined by a foot injury.
Mammoth_Ad_483@reddit
How do you feel on the outside?
Tiny_Marionberry_328@reddit
53 here and my mind totally feels like a kid, but my body is like F that and the effects are real!
eejm@reddit
I think of myself as about 19. I believe I’ve picked that age because I finally felt like I had some confidence and agency after a spectacularly shitty adolescence.
cirkis@reddit
49 and feel the same bro
theartofutility@reddit
I really think this is the case.
We don't really change much after a certain point - in our outlook or maturity - but just collect experiences.
The amount of grown men I've encountered behaving like spoiled teenagers is truly depressing. Some even get to become world leaders.
DimSumGweilo@reddit
Everyone thinks they’re unique but we’re all just the same consciousness seeing reality through different perspectives. Every time I think I’ve done something, said something, felt something, thought something novel, I can find a 100 people in a minute who do,say, feel, and think just like I did.
timpeaks72@reddit
I just turned 54 and have always said I felt like a 50 year old. And now I know I was always right! It’s just genetics.
HappyCat51@reddit
So you feel 4 years younger than you really are? That's very specific.
timpeaks72@reddit
No, I mean I’ve just always felt old inside, like walking dead energy my whole life.
HappyCat51@reddit
Ah OK.
No_Row6741@reddit
Absolutely! I think it has to do with the age at which we came into self realization. I, too, identify with my 16 year old self. Rationally I know I've matured and grown as a person, but deep in my core I feel like 16yo me.
Jb4ever77@reddit
Ok! So am not the only one! Thanks for confirming.
Juanfartez@reddit
I'm 13 with 40 years experience.
Fragrant_Jelly9198@reddit
I will be celebrating the 36th anniversary of my 21st birthday this summer 😊
kridkralc@reddit
About to turn 59. May as well be 19.
eventualist@reddit
But can you run a sub 9 min mile?
kridkralc@reddit
Pretty sure.....but I haven't tried for quite some time. I know I can make sexual comments and talk shit like I'm 15. 🙂
Clearbreezebluesky@reddit
Absolutely. I’m 52 and do not feel even close to it. It’s really weird, I feel like my daughter is more of a grown up than I am lol
lolo-2020@reddit
Mine too
thelimeisgreen@reddit
I turn 53 next week! And my wife insists I’m still 13 most of the time. Or at least my sense of humor and (according to her) my understanding of social situations are at the level of a 13 year old. She may be right…
Fragrant_Jelly9198@reddit
I often say I’m married to a 66 year old teenager…
Jonny__99@reddit
54 and most of the time yes
Dada2fish@reddit
Yes, everyone does. Everyone who gets old feels the exact same way.
Adult responsibilities and an aging body are what is holding you back from living the life you lived when you were 16.
Rushedhomeroughyn@reddit
Also born in ‘73 I feel the exact same way most of the time. Still wonder how I made it to this point and done everything that I’ve done. Funny my older brother is also 1971.
RedditSkippy@reddit
Honestly? I feel like I’m more fun now at 51 than I was at 17. A lot has to do with not being under the control of two very fragile, insecure parents, but it’s also due to being in control of my life, having more money, and fully embracing my DGAF era.
Fragrant_Jelly9198@reddit
I am so loving this DGAF era!
belsaurn@reddit
I may get older but I’ll never grow up.
Trolkarlen@reddit
If you think you feel like some much younger age, then hang out with them and you'll realize how you are not. We just spent a vacation teenagers and I know I'm not even close to a teen anymore.
curiousleen@reddit

Grannypanie@reddit
Our brains trick us into believing this, then you pick up a 40 pound bag of soil in march and are reminded of our age.
Some days I look at my wife and say “you are in trouble tonight!”
I’m in traction for a week after those events.
1101base2@reddit
Mentally I still feel like a teenager, but physically I feel like the crypt keeper...
GrayBeardBoardGamer@reddit
Any of you guys parents? It took me becoming a parent to truly grow up. I like who I am now.I don't feel old. But I don't feel like a teenager or a 20 something.
Fragrant_Jelly9198@reddit
I have never birthed a child. I married men whose ex’s did that for me 😊.
I am 56 and mentally feel like I’m in my 20’s. I often wondered if birthing and raising a child would’ve made me “grow up” but I also never felt “grown up” enough to have done that. I still don’t.
Wise-gtx@reddit
I ha ve a 18 years old. I feel about 25 inside. Sure, my body is 56, but I still feel in my twenties. I behave as a responsible adult, but don’t feel like one
Ledophile@reddit
I have found my PEEPS! I,too, feel this way( until the injuries over the last several decades make themselves known). Decrepit old lady who feels 19-25……..
Inevitable-Cell-1227@reddit
Same. I still feel young but then my knees remind me of who I really am.

I can tell you after working in an assisted living facility, no one actually grows up. We just get older!
charliefoxtrot9@reddit
Probably less mature than this, even.

Same here. 50m (1975) and feel like I am 16, occasionally behave like I am 5 (particularly with the children - 4f and 1f)

I have a bit of chronic ankle pain from job-related stress. Other than that, I feel fine most of the time. I eat healthier than I used to, and I started exercising again. I still play video games...on Crimson Desert currently. I will be 54 in June.
HalfaEnchilada@reddit
If I am asked I proudly say that I will be 53 in August. But then I hear the voice in my head that says "Ha!Ha! I'm really 25!"
rogerm3xico@reddit
Yeah I think that embracing that "whatever" attitude for so long really made us less judgemental, negative and petty. That was the adult model we grew up around so we rebelled against it and now we're way better for it.
catshark2o9@reddit
To me it’s still 1992 and I’m 16. Then today I received my Cologuard test and I realize I’m about to turn 50
dare_me_to_831@reddit
Still feel 30.
NerdDaniel@reddit
Elder Gen X. Absolutely, I have to tone it down for business purposes, but in my regular life basically I’m a teenager entering college.
Oxjrnine@reddit
Where are you putting your finger to test how old you feel?
Annual-Visual-2605@reddit
Just turned 54. Still feel 20. Possibly bc in my 40s I learned there’s no such thing as an “adult.”
Flaky-Debate-833@reddit
I'm legit curious. There is a definite difference between feeling like a teenager and acting like one. In what ways does a 51 year old act like a teenager?
ATX_Penya@reddit
Feeling like a teenager is seeing a boob and smiling
Acting like a teenager is laughing at fart jokes even when you're the guilty party
promibro@reddit
I think it's because YOU do not age, only your body does. Your soul, your essence remains as it's always been. The body ages and dies, but you don't.
jchasse@reddit
Hellz yes!!!!
People our age (53) don’t believe till they see me bouncing around.
Conversely, I look at all of em like…
“why are y’all act’n so old?”
“ come on get up! let’s play!”
DerpUrself69@reddit
Technically I'm a Xennial (79) but I was just thinking the same thing last night. I walked into the bathroom, saw myself in the mirror and had some serious cognitive dissonance about how old I look vs how young I feel in my own mind. I feel your pain.
Parking_Exit2297@reddit
I’m stubborn my goal is to out hustle/work everyone I’m 60 btw , my dad thought same way until he passed last November he was 84 , he still thought he could out work me and my younger brothers , I’m betting it was old farmer in him
Accomplished_Cash630@reddit
Yep - turning 60 in about a month. I look a lot younger with no gray hair and feel like I’m my 30’s. I also have two teenage kids so I think that has helped keep a younger mindset
gingerjaybird3@reddit
I’m like a little kid
cltreader@reddit
No I don't. I am 51. I think chronic depression and life threatening health conditions make me feel old. I go to the doctor a lot. I take a lot of meds. I wish I felt like I was 18 again. 1993 was the best year of my life.
donewithitfirst@reddit
I feel like I did 10 years ago and then job, deaths, kids married, health, worrying about finances. I now think about where he went. 56 and it feels like he was a dream.

51 F just ran my first 10K, have been running on and off for a few years. Last month decided it was time to make the full commitment. Have been running 4.5 miles a day for the last few weeks. So proud of myself!!
So yeah I don't feel my age :)
Commisceo@reddit
I'm 57 and can so relate. I keep telling people I still feel like I'm a teenager. And I'm enjoying every bit until I can't any longer. I actually spin out a little thinking how active I still am. Compared to my peers now. My wife loves how I am still like the guy she knew as a teen. I wonder when it will finally catch up to me. And it will.

Well, I just finished writing this in r/entertainment to a comment about Dax Shepherd and Eric Dane getting into a fight outside of an AA meeting:
—- I read that as AAA - then I laughed at the thought of them, waking in separately, to plan a trip.
Then getting into an argument over who has the cooler trip.
Then launching into a fist fight, while some retired senior citizen, who is just a volunteer, panics.
To me, who is two edibles in, this is probably the funniest thing I have ever thought of.
Enjoy and smile 😊
NoStyle79@reddit
I was told that because I experienced so many deaths as a teen it kinda kept me there in my head in many ways.. I have 4 adult children and here I am sledding alone in the winter, riding the bike I had when I was 13 and building Lego Sets with my partner(43).. I've worked construction these last 20 years and get shit for not being a money chaser working through winter but I value time more than money so there's some adult that was able to grow in there as well. I seen this in my 85 yr old grandmother she was 16 for my entire life. And I plan on being that way as well.

53! Born on the day the Vietnam War ended! We gen X are in the position to teach the next generations about history...and apologize for some of our boomer parents beliefs. I'm hoping my generation can truly teach what the USA stands for and how eventually we can all believe in each other for strength and prosperity.

I haven’t aged much past about 20 internally, though my body will definitely argue about that. It kind of makes me sad to feel so young inside but so…. not-young outside.
