RX 9070 vs RTX 5070 TI

Hello everyone,
I’m currently using a Ryzen 5 7500F as my CPU and an RX 9070 as my GPU. Overall, I’m satisfied with the raw performance of my system. However, in some games, when I enable frame generation, I experience significant stuttering and don’t really feel any improvement in smoothness.
From what I’ve read online, NVIDIA users seem to be able to play smoothly even with MFG 4x or 6x, and apparently the latency isn’t that high either.
I’m also planning to buy a 4K OLED monitor soon, and naturally, I’ll need FG/MFG technologies for 4K gaming. That’s why I’m considering upgrading my GPU.
Switching from my RX 9070 to an RTX 5070 Ti would cost me about an extra $400 on average, while upgrading to an RTX 5070 would cost around $150–200.
If you were in my position, what would you do, or what would you recommend?

I got a 5070 Ti and my first 4k OLED this year and it’s been a fantastic combo. Games are smooth and look awesome. You’ll have no issue playing the latest games maxed out or near max with DLSS. I’m also not very sensitive to the MFG latency or artifacts and think it works surprisingly well. Imo, if you can find one for a good price, the 5070 Ti is a great move to get into 4k gaming, while waiting to a 80 class successor worthy of its namesake next. generation

I have the 9070xt with no issues in 4k gaming
DaddyLee69420@reddit
However I would say make sure your psu can handle it as it requires much more than the base 9070
Brief_Maybe607@reddit
One question, what's your complete hardware configuration?
Just skimming through it, I can tell you have a processor that, in theory, should "push" the 9070, but in practice it's not working.
A long time ago I had an i5 6600k with an RX580 XFX Black Edition and in videos I saw people with the same configuration and it was flying, but it wasn't like that for me, the RX580 always seemed to be bottlenecked... sorry for the English, I'm from Brazil

Most people here don't understand how the frame pacing issue with fsr frame generation works and some people might not even be sensitive to it. Vsync helps with this but the game needs to support exclusive fullscreen. To fix this you can force vsync in adrenalin but the vsync method doesn't work in every game.
The foolproof method is using optiscaler, I've tested it in cyberpunk 2077 with an unlocked framerate for fun and I was able to use rt ultra with a smooth 140-150 fps at 1440p fsr4 quality in dogtown. You want to convert fsr3 frame gen inputs into fsr framegen and turn vsync on on optiscaler. Restart game and bam, no more frame pacing issues. I would also make sure to inject antilag 2 through optiscaler as well to lower input lag from frame gen.

The stuttering here will mostly likely be fixed by capping your frame rate where the gpu is at 80%, that means in more demanding scenes instead of a stutter your gpu will use the extra gpu headroom to keep the pacing.
If you are going 100% utilization at all times you will always have stutter no matter what gpu or cpu you use. Your 7500f and 9070 combo are honestly perfect, a gpu change won’t change the experience fundamentally here, you just need to cap your frame rate intelligently.
I do this all the time with my setup and rarely run into stutter because of it

I tried to gradually limit the FPS using Radeon Chill to bring GPU usage down to around 85%, but I had to reduce my FPS quite a lot to achieve that. Maybe I’m approaching it the wrong way, I’m not sure, but my stuttering issue still wasn’t resolved. During normal usage, GPU utilization fluctuates, while the CPU is almost constantly at 100% usage
CaptainMGN@reddit
Radeon Chill can cause the stuttering, I've experienced that first hand. The best way to resolve this is to turn it off, Limit the max FPS in the driver to something like 118 (if you play at 120Hz for example) and then use the FreeSync function of your display. That got rid of 99% of those stutters for me
Total_Dimension_2472@reddit (OP)
How can I do what you mentioned? I don’t see any FPS limiter in Radeon Software other than Chill. Also, Adaptive Sync is enabled on my monitor, and in Radeon Software AMD FreeSync is set to “AMD optimized.”
CaptainMGN@reddit
It should be under graphics --> global settings and then you have to scroll down a bit. It's only accessible via one specific menu which also took me a bit to find...
Adaptive sync and AMD optimized are both fine.
Total_Dimension_2472@reddit (OP)
Thank you, I tried limiting the FPS to 120, and the stutter reduced a bit (but didn’t completely go away). However, it definitely didn’t feel as smooth as 120 FPS. I turned Frame Generation off and tried again with the same settings, and the 70–90 FPS I was getting felt much smoother. It sounds a bit weird, but I think I might need a CPU upgrade.
CaptainMGN@reddit
With a 7500F I'd think so too. I was running a 7700X with the 9070 and per in game benchmarks that combo seemed to be balanced since the ms needed per frame were almost identical for CPU and GPU. With the 7800X3D the GPU is 100% the bottleneck.
Glad that it helped at least a bit though!
SatisfactionKlutzy18@reddit
What game are you playing and at what resolution? This sounds a lot more like a potential cpu bottleneck.
I know this is lame to ask, but have you enabled the expo profile for your ram, ensure everything is updated and used the command (sfc /scannow) in command prompt order your PC to fix any integrity issues with windows? Just mentioning these troubleshooting things to ensure this was done before you spend your hard earned cash on a new potential cpu.
Total_Dimension_2472@reddit (OP)
I’m playing Cyberpunk at 1440p resolution. EXPO is enabled, and I also tried with it disabled, but nothing changed. I had never run
sfc /scannowbefore, but I just did and it didn’t find any issues. My second monitor is also 1440p and it’s connected to the GPU via DisplayPort—do you think that could cause a problem?TetePepeF@reddit
in my experience, having a monitor plugged in can for sure impact your games and make you stutter a little. especially when running any video or something, so it could be. trying playing a game with it unplugged or maybe plugged into the motherboard instead, that way it uses your integrated
ToothChainzz@reddit
If your cpu is at 100, frame gen, especially mfg, will make stutter worse. The only way to fix stuttering in your case is to upgrade the cpu so it can keep up the input fees to the GPU.
TetePepeF@reddit
that’s a steep price for a more marginal increase in performance. also, MFG isn’t quite as good as they say, the input latency is still very noticeable below 120, although it may look better.
theflavoryellow@reddit
I have the same GPU (xt) but with a Ryzen 7 9800x3d what games are you seeing stuttering?
Total_Dimension_2472@reddit (OP)
I especially experience the stuttering issue a lot in Cyberpunk. When I monitor CPU and GPU usage, the CPU is usually at around 100%, while the GPU fluctuates between 80–100%. Maybe the stuttering is caused by a bottleneck
T2_daBest@reddit
Is 100% CPU usage normal on amd? That just seems pretty high to me but for gpu the 5070ti is worth it but framegen is really only needed to get high refresh rate at 4k. I use an older tv I've had for a while with a 5070ti and usually play competitive games at 1440p 120 or story or more chill games at 4k60. In avatar with dlss I can get pretty stable 60 fps in 4k but in 1440 I need frame gen for stable high refresh rate. I haven't tried cyberpunk in 4k but for 1440p I use dlss and frame gen and get smooth play 120 fps
alfiejr23@reddit
What resolution are you playing? If its 1080p then you're definitely cpu bottleneck. Upgrade to 1440p will help to improve things.
Total_Dimension_2472@reddit (OP)
I'm playing 1440p
theflavoryellow@reddit
I think it's your CPU I'm playing that game on ultra settings ray tracing, (no frame gen) right now without issue. The lowest fps I got was 60. That's because of a setting I put on.
theflavoryellow@reddit
It got to average 95 frames with the amd chill turned off.
Rob_van_Wanst@reddit
OP: what's your crowd density setting in Cyberpunk? I had the same cpu/gpu last year and found that if you have density on high, the 7500F will have a hard time - causing a not so great framepacing. Lowering this to medium can help bringing down the cpu usage quite a bit. I upgraded to a 9700X later on and high crowd density wasn't an issue anymore.
malgadar@reddit
Just got a 5070ti and am running on my 83" OLED and it is absolutely crushing it. Everything looks great!
I would say it is absolutely worth it
Total_Dimension_2472@reddit (OP)
is MFG 4x or 6x really as good as people say? For example, in a game where you normally get around 50–80 FPS, does turning on MFG 4x and getting 200+ FPS actually feel smooth and good? Since I would be paying the extra $400 mostly for these technologies, it’s a critical topic for me
CaptainMGN@reddit
Very mixed bag. The lower the framerate you use for MFG, the worse the result will be. Vex (youtuber) recently did a video about this topic and the crazy ghosting aside in some games the delay it introduces between you moving the mouse and actual camera movement is insane.
At this point in time I'd say it's really not worth it but it definitively has potential in the future.
RedLimes@reddit
Based in your comment it sounds like you are CPU limited but as for the frame pacing issue changing Vsync in the driver to "Always On" should help with that.
You can do it per game if you don't want to use it in all games
Total_Dimension_2472@reddit (OP)
I applied the setting you mentioned, but it didn’t make much of a difference. Still, thanks — maybe I can fix the issue I’m having in another game.
RedLimes@reddit
You can try other branches of frame gen too, i.e. FSR FG 3 vs 4.
Check CPU performance too, make sure Windows sees all 12 threads, EXPO is enabled in bios, and chipset drivers are updated. Turning Memory Integrity off can yield more CPU performance too at slight security downgrade
prank_mark@reddit
But why? Why switch to 4K if you haven't go the hardware for it? I'd personally say it's not worth the money at all.
SaitamaCrb@reddit
Don’t even consider upgrading to a 5070 because the 12gb vram is not enough to play any newer aaa at 4k. Get the 5070 ti instead.
hannahmanaman@reddit
I regret not paying the extra $75 (at the time) for the 5070ti. I went with a 9070xt and it's fine in some games but I feel like spend more time tweaking settings than I did when I had a 3080ti. Especially if it's a VR title.
Temporary_Shower4185@reddit
Does this matter for 1080p gaming?
BedroomThink3121@reddit
"Upgrading to 5070" is not a thing here, it'll be a downgrade.
As for the 5070Ti, I'd say do it as it's worth paying for extra features of Nvidia and you're getting better raw performance too.
akshaysura@reddit
I have 5070 ti and its the best. A little heavy though. But it is good and I have heard RTX is better if you like ray tracing. Problem though, i bought it when it was cheaper now it is 30-40% more expensive than the price I bought it for. So if money is of no value go for it. And in your case you are only going $400 up so I would suggest you to same some money and go for 5070 ti
Total_Dimension_2472@reddit (OP)
Thank you, I’d like to ask you something. First of all, which CPU are you using with the 5070 Ti? My second question is, is MFG 4x or 6x really as good as people say? For example, in a game where you normally get around 50–80 FPS, does turning on MFG 4x and getting 200+ FPS actually feel smooth and good? Since I would be paying the extra $400 mostly for these technologies, it’s a critical topic for me
Delicious_Ad_8501@reddit
I have 5070ti as well. If you have a good base fps, you’ll be fine. Also, nvidia has improved frame gen overall(they recently introduced the new preset B, which improves the image quality ), but I haven’t tested it yet. Overall, i’m satisfied. 5070ti consumes less power, uses 1-2gb less vram(than 9070xt), has better oc potential, much better outside of gaming and will have better resale value in the future. But rx9070xt is still a beast of a card as well and cheaper. I think you can’t go wrong with either of them, but for 4k you will def need frame gen(not always, but pretty often)
akshaysura@reddit
CPU: 7 7800X3D I get 100-120FPS in most games at high FPS with highest settings I never tried to get more. So I dont know if it would make any major difference. I will try it tomorrow and let you know if you ping me tomorrow morning (its 12:30am in my Timezone)
SterlingArcher824@reddit
Are all your firmwares updated? Gpu, bios windows etc. Latest FSR should work fine ideally. Do you even really need to enable frame gen? Coz imo, the performance that you are adding with the 5070ti is not worth $400 but to each their own i guess. 5070 is fine but you are downgrading vram
Total_Dimension_2472@reddit (OP)
Yes, all my drivers are up to date. FSR works fine, so I don’t have any issues on that side. But since I’ll be getting a 4K monitor soon, I’ll inevitably need frame generation
aragorn18@reddit
If you want better, smoother frame generation, the 5070 Ti is a good choice. AMD has problems with frame pacing.
Total_Dimension_2472@reddit (OP)
thank u, do you think the $400 price difference is worth it?
aragorn18@reddit
For 4K high refresh gaming, you kind of need to rely on frame generation. Nvidia's MFG is significantly ahead of AMD's. So, its worth it for me. But, you and I have different values for money.
Glittering_Ad1664@reddit
5070 don’t worth it, it’s same or worse than 9070, frame gen might help but 12GB is no go for 4k 5070ti is better, go for it if 400$ is not an issue,
