The Jetsons..and their age differences

I absolutely love this show growing up but as an adult, I start to pick it apart..
George Jetston - 40 years old
Jane Jetson (George’s wife) was 33
Judy Jetson (their daughter) was 16
Do the math…..
tunaman808@reddit
You put more thought into this than Hanna and Barbera did.

Pertinence to GenX - Posts may be removed if they are not pertinent to Generation X in a specific way.
This includes non-specific ramblings, any sort of conspiracy theories that have nothing to do with GenX, or posts about people who happen to be GenX….and that’s it.
AI videos or articles MUST have the proper flair identifying the content as AI.
Just because an article or video mentions Generation X does not automatically make it pertinent. Moderators will make this determination at their discretion.

I knew girls as young as 15 that were having kids back in the 1990s. Having a kid at 17 wasn't that unusual back in the 1960s. Some people were starting families straight out of high school, and some people still do today.
newideal17@reddit
Wait, are you saying it's more unusual today for teens to find themselves pregnant? I definitely knew girls in the 80s getting pregnant, one as young as 12.
MichaSound@reddit
Actually yes - statistically one of the biggest reasons for the decline in birth rate in certain countries (USA included) is the fall in teen pregnancies.
And considering the statistics on how many teen pregnancies are fathered by men older than 20, I think that’s a good sign all round.
newideal17@reddit
This is awesome news! But what do you think is the reason? Better education? More available birth control? Or ... ?
RustySilver42@reddit
Yeah. Some horrible bureaucrat was saying the drop in teen births was a crisis the other day.
solsticesunrise@reddit
Absolutely. Teen birth rates have dropped every year for a while now.
Braincloud@reddit
Wow. I might be slightly surprised if the Jetsons were a real life family and not a cartoon.
stunneddisbelief@reddit
Wikipedia was wrong about Judy’s age in Season 1. She was 15, not 16. That would have made Jane 18, which would have been the legal age of consent.
Also, the average age for marriage back in 1962, when the show first premiered was 20 for women. That means there were women both younger and older than that. Younger marriages were much more common back then.
haydesigner@reddit
That still would have meant she was likely impregnated at 17.
stunneddisbelief@reddit
That would depend entirely on when Jane’s birthday was and what month Judy was born in. Totally possible to get pregnant and give birth within the 12 months of her 18th year.
OGREtheTroll@reddit
The age of consent in the majority of US states is 16. A handful are 17, and a few more than that are 18. Marriage laws are different, and some states allow for even younger marriages with parents permission.
California is one state that has an age of consent of 18. Due to so much tv and movies coming out of California, and most writers not realizing that such laws might be different outside of their own state, most media when relevant will assume the 18 age of consent, even when something is set in a state with one thats 16 or 17. And since most viewers aren't too concerned with age of consent laws, many just assume it's 18 regardless of the actual governing law.
The US has some of the highest age of consent laws in the world. Many European nations have lower.
Growing up I just assumed it was 18, till I got in law school and learned otherwise.
spintool1995@reddit
The legal age of consent is 16 or 17 in 25 states today, even more in 1962 with a couple 15 as late as the 90s. It's 15 or 16 in almost all of Europe today.
Cubbance@reddit
You're not quite right. Here's a gizmodo article breaking it down. George Jetson was 40, Jane Jetson was 33, and Judy Jetson was 15. That still places her as 18 when Judy was born, and while it's possible she was 18 when she was conceived too, it's still also a possibility that she was 17, and George was 24. Still creepy, but the numbers were just a tiny bit off. One year makes a big difference.
But also, the 60s were a crazy time, socially.
the_kessel_runner@reddit
A 24 yr old and a 17 yr old isn't really creepy. It's technically illegal in most places, sure, but we're essentially talking about two people who are both, functionally, children, which is a different moral category than what the word "predator" is supposed to conjure.
I used to work at a temp agency doing intake interviews for menial jobs. Warehouse stuff, data entry, the kinds of positions where the main qualification is showing up. One afternoon a guy had to disclose to me that he was a registered sex offender. He explained it pretty matter of factly.....his wife's parents had pressed charges when they were dating because she was 17 and he was in his early 20s. They were still married. They had kids. He was in his 40s at this point, sitting across a folding table from me, and the state still considered him a predator. The same woman he married. The same relationship her parents objected to.
That's not what the law was designed to protect against, and I think most reasonable people understand that even if they won't say it out loud. The law is a blunt instrument. It has to be. But "illegal" and "creepy" are doing two completely different jobs in a sentence, and collapsing them together is how we end up calling a guy a predator for having a long marriage.
OGREtheTroll@reddit
24 and 17 would be legal in all but 11 states. In most states 16 is the age of consent.
Additionally most states have "Romeo and juliet laws" that make exceptions when the parties are, typically, no more than 4 years apart in age. These exceptions usually wont apply below a certain age like 12 or 13. These are usually based on actual birth dates, and occasionally you get an incident where the difference between it being criminal or not is just a few hours.
(Just an fyi I'm a former criminal defense lawyer, not some random person whose knowledgeable on age of consent laws for creepy reasons. )
spintool1995@reddit
It's not illegal "in most places". It's illegal in 25 US states where the age of consent is 18 and a handful of other countries. In the other 25 states where the age of consent is 16 or 17 and most of the rest of the world, it's perfectly legal.
UrsaMajor7th@reddit
In the future, a 25 y/o marrying an 18 y/o isn’t a big deal.
hawgs911@reddit
This is a cartoon.
OGREtheTroll@reddit
My mom was 17 when she got pregnant with me. My dad was 23. They met on a blind date set up by my aunt (20 at the time) who was my moms friend and was dating my dad's older brother (25). My parents got married and had me when mom was 18 and dad 24. This would have been a few years after the jetsons.

In 1962, most states set the age of consent for heterosexual sex at 16. Now, let's talk about the scientific inaccuracies!

When you overthink the things in life you like, you won’t like them for much longer.
Quick-Reputation9040@reddit
Maybe don’t overthink a cartoon…
…I mean, Wile E Coyote would be the richest person in history from all his ACME lawsuits…
…and half the casts in all of them would be in prison…
…they’re meant for children…15-30 minutes a day. Not adults watching them for hours on end.

I doubt it because Acme couldn't have been a profitable company.

George said “Eep opp ork ah-ah” to Jane when she was 16, apparently.
HomerSectual@reddit
It was the 70s. He Judy was a love child from the commune. They broke free. He sold out, got a legit, boring, cubicle hell job. He met Jane and he was like, “fuck it. Close enough.” And then they had Elroy.
Pleasant_Expert_1990@reddit
It was the 60s

Well, idk I’m not dusty like that. I remember them from the 80s.

Half siblings. They share the same father, they are half siblings.
I've seen a lot of this over the past few years - all of a sudden, people are convinced that if you don't have the same mother AND father, you're just step siblings???
Step siblings are not related to each other at all, two of their parents married each other.
If John's mom married Fred's dad, John & Fred are stepbrothers.
If John's mom and Fred's dad have a daughter together, they are both her half brothers. She is not their stepsister...

Oh jeez, and thus is born yet another subgroup of slash fiction on AO3. Add the robot into the mix, and the permeations are staggering.

Explains the white hair.
Throw8976m@reddit
lol So Jane was 17 when she had Judy?
Pleasant_Expert_1990@reddit
Not so much that she was 17, but that George was 24.
OP is not factoring in that the show was made in the 1960scby men who were born in the 1920s and 30s.
Fun fact, the Jetsons is set in 2020 (the "far future" at the time and the beginning of the Jet Age). George Jetson (b 1980) is basically an AI prompt engineer.
