My 1st new build > CPU & Heat sink placement issues >

Hi there guys.

I was hoping that you could help me with a couple of issues that I am

experiencing.

(N.B. Apologies for the apparent "Daft / Noob questions"
However I've not built a new PC in a very long time !)

Background / History:

My old PC died (looks like the CPU was fried due to overheating

(unbeknownst to me at the time).

A very good friend of mine has given me -

New motherboard

CPU

Heat sink and fan

RAM

I can use the PSU, GFX card and case from my old PC to complete my new build.

Issue:

I've almost got it all set-up, but I just wanted to check a couple things with

you guys before I finalise the build.

1). I've removed thermal paste with isopropyl alcohol on both the heat sink and

the CPU (mmmm nice and clean for now).

2). I've bought a back-plate and set of runners ?

(struts that the heat sink sits on top of).

This is so that the heat sink can rest on top of, and helps hold the heat sink

securely in place.

2.1). I've tried a "test-run" and tried to to connect the heat sink to the

back-plate (whilst sat on top of the runners - Not on the motherboard yet)

The screws are not getting a "bite" of the pegs on the back plate and keeps

falling off the runners.

2.2). However - If I remove the runners, and just connect the heat sink to the

pegs on the back plate, I get a "bite" and they screw in nicely.

I'm using "Type-2" heat sink and fan combo (as shown in the motherboard manual).

So my questions are -

1). Do I have to use the runners with the heat sink and back-plate ?

2). If not - Can I screw the heat sink into the pegs directly, and will it be secure ?

(As I'm obviously going to run the motherboard vertically in the tower configuration) ?

3). Is there anything else that I need to watch out for before I complete this

build ?

N.B. I'm fully aware that I need to re-apply the thermal paste to both the

CPU and heat sink before I screw it down properly.

I just don't want to fuck anything up with this as I don't have another PC

(Other than my dinky little Raspberry Pi 5 which I'm currently using

as my main computer).

Details / Specs:

Motherboard: ASUS TUF X570 Plus

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5600-X

Heat sink / Cooler: Type-2 Stock heat sink with fan
