What are the most popular cryptids in the UK that most people know without searching the internet?

There should be serious answers only and no trolling please.

Had to google to see what a cryptid is, but now I know, and without searching further, 100% the top answer should be wild big cats.
There was possibly some truth in these sightings as owning large cats was a niche thing for some rich people in the 1970s, before the practice was banned and it looks almost certain some were released into the wild as a way to "humanely" dispose of them.
However none would be alive today and they were rare enough that breeding seems near impossible.
The most likely explanation is that for evolutionary reasons, our brains see potentially dangerous animals as MUCH bigger than they are when we first see them. Prime example is if you see a spider in your house - looks massive, but if you trap it under a glass, leave it a bit then go back, take a close look, you realise how small it is to the point you wonder if it somehow shrank itself.
WorcsBloke@reddit
This is roughly where I am. The number of stories you read where a person says, basically, "I am absolutely certain I have seen these, multiple times, and I've seen great photos as well, far battery than you'd imagine - but absolutely everybody who owns the land in question has entirely coincidentally refused me permission to publish said photos, so I can't show you" is getting to absurd proportions. Even in respectable publications like BBC Wildlife from time to time. I'll believe it when we get to see the photos. Until then, no.

I am a vet, and have been to lectures on this. So although 'purebred' fertile cats of any of the ex-pet big cats are very unlikely, interbreeding with each or Scottish wildcats or even an adventurous domestic tom are probably not that uncommon, and most sightings are probably of these sterile crossbreeds hence being often 'labrador sized'. They can also live 15-20 years with no natural enemies in the wild, and would only need to encounter their own species once in 15 years to keep the population going, added to which there are still illegal pet trades where animals can be purchased on the black market, and these probably get released whenever the owner gets fed up and/or fears discovery. Also there have been escapes from zoos and reserves (if domestic cats can escape from any pet carrier designed to man, I bet escapes are a lot more common than reported). In 2022 DNA was found confirming the presence of big cats in the UK:
https://www.discoverwildlife.com/news/new-dna-evidence-confirms-presence-of-big-cats-in-the-uk
And there have been many many sightings and video recordings. Have a look at the puma watch website 😁
(It's only really famers of sheep and birds that have to worry as they are extremely introverted and will stay away from humans as much as possible. At least I hope it stays that way!)
Diplomatic_Gunboats@reddit
Still bollocks though. Strands of hair on a fence dont confirm the presence of big cats. They just confirm that the strands of hair came from a big cat.
I know where there's a stuffed lion, if I ripped some hairs out of it and stuck them on a fence after setting my dog on a sheep, the news would be LION LOOSE!
Riovem@reddit
Politely, surely the top answer should be the Loch Ness Monster?
Then big cats or black shuck?
PleaseCarryMyBags@reddit
Racoonguin in the Midlands, like an evil racoon with flippers who waddles like a penguin, usually only seen around New Moon
ClericalRogue@reddit
The Gwyllgi in wales maybe one, its most commonly just known as a big black mastiff like dog with red eyes.
Big cats generically, across regions.
Nessie is the obvious one
Beast of Bodmin

In Llangrannog there was the Black Nun.

ConceptUnusual@reddit
I read the stories of black shuck as a kid so I loved it when the darkness released that song.
Saw the question and my brain started singing 🎶 black shuck, black shuck, that dog don't give a fuck!
chaoticchemicals@reddit
Look for a bury St Edmunds band called Thy last Drop. They have a song called black dog about him, abd another local one about the 18 witches hanged off the Abby walls.
chaoticchemicals@reddit
Green children of woolpit too.
Alamata626@reddit
The Loch Ness Monster.
cboel@reddit
I am convinced the Pictish beast is an artistic depiction of a platypus.
And either the originator of the depiction saw one locally or travelled far enough away to see one.
Kit_Tosh@reddit
Unfortunately I doubt an early medieval culture had regular enough travel to Australia for them to incorporate a platypus into their decorative art to that extent. Maybe it depicts the elusive haggis...

Rugbyal15@reddit
Does the beast of Bodmin count? It’s supposedly just a Black Big Cat , nothing supernatural
PeroniNinja84@reddit
I’d put it second behind Nessy.
Neither_Process_7847@reddit
Exmoor Beast ahead of Bodmin, surely (admittedly both cases of people getting a bit excited after reading the Hound of the Baskervilles, but still...).
Rugbyal15@reddit
I think any part of the UK with an open space has a big cat story 😂
IndustrialPet@reddit
It has to be Nessie, surely.

Haggis?

This is properly dating me😆, but back in the late 70s/early 80s, the hairy hands of Dartmoor were a legit phenom. Ghastly hands that would take the wheel when you drive across the moors.

I saw a strange monkey creature jump out of a tree and land in the center of the road years ago in a mates car. It just landed out the tree, looked at us and jumped off to the other side of the road like it was on springs. It felt so weird and unnatural. There were 5 of us in the car. 3 of us saw it properly, while the others just caught it jumping out of sight.
This was near Whitley Court and was in broad daylight. It definitely had the Cryptid feel to it.
People have said that it could've been owned illegally and let out. I don't know about that. It was odd to say the least.

Beast of Bodmin moor/big cats + Loch Ness monster. Those must be the winners by miles.
(I'm personally vaguely familiar with a lot more due to wasting my life on the Fortean Times website when in a job I disliked.)
MyBeardSaysHi@reddit
Unexpected fortean times mentioned. Wow that takes me back a long way..
811545b2-4ff7-4041@reddit
Lock Ness monster is the best known, then maybe you've got the beast of bodmin moor.
Going back to Victorian folklaw, there was Spring-heeled Jack.
Does Purple Aki count? Don't let him squeeze your muscles.
FireWhiskey5000@reddit
Loch Ness
The beast of Bodmin Moor
The big cat(s) of Dartmoor
Cornish Pixies
Welsh/Scottish (mostly) fairies/fae folk
Will O’ The Wisp/Hinkypunk
Spring Heeled Jack
Banshee (if you include Ireland - idk if they’re also Northern Irish)
Then probably some of the stuff popularised by Harry Potter - Boggarts, gnomes. Kelpie, grindylows, etc.
KCPRTV@reddit
Wild haggises. Overhunted now, but it's still magical when you spot those three odd legs. :)

I had a good funny reply, too.

Haggis. I follow a group who make haggis posts and it so funny. I wish they were real
Eoin_McLove@reddit
Loch Ness innit
girlsunderpressure@reddit
It'll be Black Shuck and the Fen Tiger round these parts (guess where). Loch Ness Monster probably best known worldwide/nationwide.
gentletonberry@reddit
Does the Grey Lady and her variants count? Stories about her haunting a local pub kept me up at night as a kid. Do ghosts count as cryptids?
Mc_and_SP@reddit
The four-headed, man-eating haddock fish-beast of Aberdeen (compare to the brain of S. Baldrick.)
these_metal_hands@reddit
Beast of Bodmin? Not sure if that's a cryptid, though. Either way it ain't real.
