What happened with this Miata/MX-5 NBFL interior?

I'm going to go take a look at this one MX-5 NBFL in Germany tomorrow.
Can anyone tell me why does the interior look like this?

The rest of the car is clean.
The car has a single rust spot but otherwise seems to be in good condition but of course I'll inspect it completely
in person.

Most likely the interior was torn up and the owner glued on upholstery to cover it up.
imo I don't like the look of it, but looks better than cracked vinyl everywhere.
