“While I’m here”

Trans is getting rebuilt so why not add the stockpile of parts I have.
Pulled the stock cast iron intake and 2barrel. Edelbrock performer and Holley street demon 650.
Also have Hedman headers and a mild cam but I’m trying to decide how far I wanna tear the engine apart currently. You have to pull the heads to remove the lifters on the ford 302. So if I’m pulling the heads I want to upgrade “while I’m here” so I’m really torn.
Find some gt40 heads or just go with some AFR aluminum. Ahhhhhh this was supposed to just be rebuild the bad transmission 🤣

I've never pulled the heads off to pull lifters on a Ford 302. Put several cam lifter sets in without pulling heads.

News to me

Unless your using a lifter puller. But I have never found that necessary. A finger nail or thin common screwdriver tip is usually sufficient. May take a couple of minutes each to work the underneath buildup off of the lifters. All the puller does is make it faster for impatient people.

While I'm here has bit me in the ass more times than I can count lol. Having said that, factory 302 heads are abysmal, replacing those will make a huge difference.

That’s the goal

Go with whatever heads get you the compression you want that will work with your desired cam/goals. Whenever I see heavy iron parts replaced with aluminum it gets me excited. Keep us posted.

Gt40 3 bar or afr 185’s will do just fine. 325hp is enough for the family cruiser

Scope creep! That’s how mine started too. If I’m here, might as well do this, wash, rinse, suffer and repeat 😂

You know it!! That’s how any project goes. This isn’t my first or last

Honestly I'd just grab a complete late model Explorer 5.0 that has the nice heads and cam swap that while it's out of the car. You can then just swap the whole thing in a day and not have to deal with a cylinder head/cam swap in the car and likely multi-week downtime.

I’ve thought about doing exactly what you suggest but what’s stopping me is then having another engine to store (one I remove). And with the 71 mustang, if I pull the radiator (that’s already drained) I can slip the cam out the front.
Also I’m looking for 3bar gt40 heads, not the 4 bar P heads that are everywhere.

It's true. And also looking at what people are asking for 30+ year old 5.0's makes me really consider an LS.

I have a Toyota 1uz sitting around ( overhead cam, 4.0 liter and 300hp) I’ve thought about putting in
