To chip or not to chip?

I have grown up in South Carolina. my husband, son and I are sitting here talking and I mentioned how I used to put my chips on my ham sandwiches when I was a child. they say that's wrong. I need a poll. if you grew up in the south did you put chips on your sandwiches or not?
TheJokersChild@reddit
Level up and do it like Pittsburgh...put FRIES on it.
IHaveBoxerDogs@reddit
Pittsburgh is the only place I’ve been to that puts fries in a steak salad.
New_Willingness6453@reddit
We do it in Youngstown too.
CouldBeBetterForever@reddit
They're not uncommon in other parts of Pennsylvania. It's definitely caught on around the state. I'm not sure how often you'll see it outside of PA though.
SufficientProject273@reddit
Fries don't crunch.
OriginalSilentTuba@reddit
Pittsburgh, and Rutgers University.
eugenesbluegenes@reddit
Don't forget the slaw.
TheJokersChild@reddit
The full Primanti.
New_Willingness6453@reddit
If the chips are already on the sandwich, I'm ok eating it. I would not, however, put chips on the sandwich myself. I'd leave them on the side or in the bag and eat them.
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
Chips on a sandwich is so common, this seems like a bot question.
SuperPomegranate7933@reddit
Forreal.
Extreme_Obligation37@reddit (OP)
I promise I'm not a bot 😂😂
SuperPomegranate7933@reddit
Exactly what a bot would say.... 🤨
Extreme_Obligation37@reddit (OP)
Oml. That is insane 😂😂😂😂😂😂
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
You're not beating the allegations.
Extreme_Obligation37@reddit (OP)
How does one prove they aren't a bot though? Lmao. Like....I don't even know how to prove I'm a human is there a test?
Kristylane@reddit
We’re gonna have to get a blade runner over here
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
Yes. And youre failing it.
Extreme_Obligation37@reddit (OP)
Uh okay lol I guess you're going to have to think I'm a bit and I'll assume you like to troll.
wolfysworld@reddit
I LOVE chips on all my sandwiches especially peanut butter and jelly but it has to be potato chips even though I don’t eat potato chips if not on a sandwich. I’m cool with you being a bot if we are talking about sandwiches, bots gotta eat too! 😜
SuperPomegranate7933@reddit
Just messin with you. Tell the hubs & kidlet we do this stuff all over. My uncle puts chips on his burgers, I like them on a grilled cheese.
Plain chips or flavored on your ham sandwich? Cuz if you're not using flavors, the dill pickle ones will rock your whole world.
According-Way9438@reddit
Only on lake days
StOnEy333@reddit
“I grew up not in South Carolina, but the western state of California. Here it is common for some people to enjoy a sandwich this way. I wouldn’t say that every person does it— but you will see it every now and then. It add a nice texture contrast to the sandwich that many enjoy.”
Youcants1tw1thus@reddit
I just saw someone get a sandwich at a restaurant I was at that had chips on it, in Connecticut.
Traditional-Job-411@reddit
I grew up up north and put chips on my tuna sandwhich. The crunchy is awesome
MarqiMichelle@reddit
I grew up in the 90s. I’m not from the south, but we all did it. If the mood strikes I still do.
MilleryCosima@reddit
Grew up in Utah. I think I've seen it twice ever.
TheOfficialKramer@reddit
Absolutely
Nottacod@reddit
Not south and yes we did
FacePunchMonday@reddit
Im not from the south but ive certainly seen people do this. I personally think its disgusting but to each his own
SufficientProject273@reddit
Would you not eat a sandwich with chips on the side? It is no different.
FacePunchMonday@reddit
Nah, chips are gross. Not my thing.
Also would you eat marshmellows on pizza? Would you eat marshmellow after or before the pizza? Yeah not the same lol
SufficientProject273@reddit
So you don't like ANY chips? Like none at all? Can't say i've ever met anyone who didn't eat chips.
That doesn't even make sense. Marshmallows are a sweet confectionary, not savory like Pizza. Chips however are savory and pair with sandwiches well... its why Sandwich stores all have chips with the meals. So, no not on a pizza...but before and after. I have and it was not an issue.
FacePunchMonday@reddit
Now you have. Nice to meet you. Chips are greasy oily sodium bombs and i think they are disgusting.
SufficientProject273@reddit
Yea, cheap ones are. Even those are delicious. The chip aisle is vast and full of baked, veggie, low sodium etc. I'd say take a look next time you're in the grocery store. I bet there is one that would tickle your fancy.
FacePunchMonday@reddit
No thanks
SufficientProject273@reddit
Missing out, there are some baked veggie chips that are super low sodium and not greasy at all.
IHaveBoxerDogs@reddit
OMG, they don’t like chips! Leave it alone!
SufficientProject273@reddit
Struck a nerve did I
IHaveBoxerDogs@reddit
Yes, because people who keep insisting someone’s taste is wrong are annoying AF. I actually like chips. But geez, not everyone likes the same thing.
Steamsagoodham@reddit
It is weird how hard it is for you to accept that some people just don’t like, and won’t like, chips.
FacePunchMonday@reddit
Well i dont like chips and if i want veggies ill just stick to eating actual non-chip-formatted veggies. I assure you i am not missing anything.
SufficientProject273@reddit
LOL Yea you are. But you do you.
FacePunchMonday@reddit
Lol jinx
Saltpork545@reddit
You can not like chips, that's fine. People have preferences.
The marshmallow thing is a stretch. You don't pair pizza with marshmallows, you do commonly pair sandwiches with chips the same way you pair burgers with fries.
So a more reasonable question would be do you put fries on your burger and the answer to that is yes, some people(and some burgers) do have fries on them.
Reality is, if you're eating anything in the same half hour it's mixed in your stomach so eating it separately or at the same time is just a matter of preference.
So, it is effectively the same, it's just what people prefer. If you prefer to not have chips, then it's a non-issue for you.
cOntempLACitY@reddit
I expect a certain texture when I bite a sandwich, having pokey, crunchy chips in that bite is not my expectation. I eat my chips separately, if at all (not really into potato chips).
I_Am_Mandark_Hahaha@reddit
You should stick to the Gerber applesauce then to not get the ouchy pokey food.
SufficientProject273@reddit
Pokey? No no..You smash the sandwich to break them. The crunch makes it more enjoyable.
cOntempLACitY@reddit
I’ve tried it, it’s still pokey! Little crunchy bits, no thanks. Noisy, too.
Self-Comprehensive@reddit
I mean people say that about pickles too and I love a pickle on the side but a pickle will have absolutely ruin a sandwich
SufficientProject273@reddit
Pickles are literally one of the most common sandwich toppings...what do you mean it will ruin a sandwich...
Self-Comprehensive@reddit
A lot of people don't like pickles on sandwiches because when you bite into the pickle all you taste is pickle. The flavor is just too strong.
SufficientProject273@reddit
That just does not compute for me because pickles are not what I would call a strong flavor, I mean I drink a cup of pickle juice just for the hell of it sometime. This is a wild ride.
FacePunchMonday@reddit
This is wild ride you just said you drink brine for funsies lmao
SufficientProject273@reddit
Yea....and? Many people drink pickle juice...hell its used and quite a few drinks.
FacePunchMonday@reddit
Hey u do u lol
FacePunchMonday@reddit
For pickles it depends on the sandwich. Chicken cutlet hero? Fuck no. Italian combo? No way. Cuban? Absolutely. Burger? Totally.
SufficientProject273@reddit
Well of course its not going to go on certain sandwiches, but we are speaking in general not specifics.
Content-Elk-2037@reddit
I did not, but my husband enjoys chips on his sandwiches. I’m not a fan of crunch on a sandwich.
malinagurek@reddit
I’m not from the south, but this sounds great. Chip away!
Melora_T_Rex714@reddit
I never have but have always known people who did! It’s not wrong: it’s a matter of taste, which is subjective!
wieldymouse@reddit
I just put Sun chips on my turkey sandwich yesterday.
Steamsagoodham@reddit
I never saw anyone do this growing up in the Midwest. Chips were just eaten on the side if they came with the sandwich.
Personally, I would never want chips on my sandwich.
HairyDadBear@reddit
I didn't like doing it but plenty of other kids did. I saw it at lunch all the time
Saltpork545@reddit
This isn't a southern thing, it's just a human thing.
It's preference. Some folks love it, some don't.
Did I do it? Oh yeah. Do I do it now? Oh yeah. I don't eat as many sandwiches or lunch meats as I used to but I will still absolutely get some plain kettle cooked chips and place them on some roast beef.
You know what hits way harder than it should? Jalapeno kettle chips with pimento cheese. Try it sometime.
Recent-Influence-965@reddit
Chips on a peanut butter and jelly is good as well
GoldHistory6@reddit
I grew up in the north we all did it as kids. Ill still do it if its bologna.
latelyimawake@reddit
This is insanely common. I’ve seen people do this in southern CA, Texas, the northeast, the Midwest, and the PNW. I personally have been doing this since I was a kid, my parents always put chips on our cheese sandwiches.
NPHighview@reddit
I'm from the upper midwest. The proper use of chips is crumbled into a tuna noodle casserole.
houdini31@reddit
I didn't grow up in the south and I have done that-that is a thing all over the country
miketugboat@reddit
Pool day. Ham/baloney and cheese, white bread untoasted, lays salt and vinegar chips(sometimes doritos if you're feeling exotic). It still has a hold on me today, think I'll make one this weekend.
I grew up in MD, i think as kids the first time you saw it you thought it was crazy and then you tried it yourself and realized how great the salt and crunch addition was. I would find it surprising and odd to meet an adult that was against this. In adulthood we generally toast the bread and add salt and seasoning another way, but if you're on a boat or hiking, anywhere outdoors with that kind of sandwich without means to bring toasted bread or toast the bread, it just works.
WhatABeautifulMess@reddit
This is popular enough that it’s a gimmick at Bobby Flay’s burger place to “crunchify” your burger with chips.
Wastedgent@reddit
Yes. Ruffles in particular.
ChoppedUnc-SF@reddit
What? On them? (Californian who spent a few years in TN)
Akito_900@reddit
My dad used to do this and raised me to do this and he did indeed grow up in Georgia so this tracks!

The answer is Flamin’ hot Cheetos. They’re good on everything.

I moved to SC, and have been here 20 years. I’ve tried a lot of southern things, but I can’t wrap my head around this one.
cathemeralcrone@reddit
Grew up in the Midwest, and I never even heard of this abomination!
IHaveBoxerDogs@reddit
I grew up in the other SC (SoCal). Kids used to do it. It was never my thing.
Head_Razzmatazz7174@reddit
I didn't, but I knew people that did. I didn't judge.
Bluemonogi@reddit
I grew up in Iowa and did not have chips on sandwiches.
I don’t think your husband and son should tell you that you are wrong. I have heard of people doing it. You can sandwich however you want. It isn’t hurting anyone if you like chips on your sandwich.
HoneyWyne@reddit
Grew up north and south... learned to put chips on my sandwiches as a kid in Ohio.
Jass0602@reddit
Why would you not?? Especially if in the pool ha
musical_dragon_cat@reddit
Not southern but have put chips on a sandwich before. I'm a fan of adding texture to meals, so chips on a sandwich is totally reasonable and sane.
DogLord92@reddit
Gotta be ripple chips. The flat ones can get soggy towards the end unless you Scooby-Doo it all in 1 bite.
ThreeTo3d@reddit
A nice pb&j with a couple of salt and vinegar chips slid in there is practically gourmet
machagogo@reddit
Lays BBQ on a ham sandwich with was basically my lunch every day in high school.
Ok_Orchid1004@reddit
What are “chips”? Potato chips? I think kids all over the US do this naturally. But not a specific thing where i lived in the south. Put whatever you want on your sandwiches, who cares what others think.
According-Way9438@reddit
Only in lake days
Silently-Snarking@reddit
I call it the pool day sandwich
FalseCredential@reddit
People from all over the US do this. I love to put chips on hoagies.
Silently-Snarking@reddit
I’ve done this my whole life
malibuklw@reddit
I grew up in the north (NY) and I loved chips on a turkey sandwich.
TipsyBaker_@reddit
It's not even a southern thing. It's pretty common.
Sad_bippy@reddit
Just chiming in to say this is not exclusively a southern thing. I grew up in Colorado, my mom grew up in Pennsylvania, and we live in the south now. People put chips on their sandwiches everywhere lol
soulmatesmate@reddit
I did it once as a kid. After trying it, I explained to my friend that chips on the side was much better. He tried it my way...
Most times we didn't have chips, just 2 pieces of bread, bologna and maybe a slice of cheese
superkt3@reddit
I put chips on a sandwich last night for dinner 🤷🏻♀️
TitanInTraining@reddit
I think it's pretty common for children, but I've never seen an adult do it.
OriginalSilentTuba@reddit
I refuse to eat a tuna sandwich without chips.
Sparkle_Rott@reddit
I had never heard of this until my husband did it on his tuna fish sandwich. There’s now no going back.
Sledgehammer925@reddit
I put chips on “mushy” sandwich like tuna or egg salad. Not so much on solid sandwiches, but it doesn’t sound bad.
GreyMaeve@reddit
Not from the south, but I used to do this before the ravages of time on the body led me to cut my salt intake. I did have a grilled cheese with apple chips on it 2 weeks ago and it was amazing! Still add french fries occasionally to hamburgers.
ray_t101@reddit
I have even made chip sandwiches. A Dorito sandwich is the bomb.
Zizi_Tennenbaum@reddit
When no one is around I do the Texas equivalent which is tortilla chips in my tacos. I wouldn’t do that at a restaurant but it’s so good.
pippintook24@reddit
I don't think this is strictly a southern thing. it's incredibly common.
Ok-Professional2232@reddit
My grandma did this, especially a tuna sandwich, and I do it occasionally too. But we are not Southern in any way.
LastCookie3448@reddit
They are very wrong and they need to seriously reconsider their values & choices in life. 🤣
Extreme_Obligation37@reddit (OP)
Thank you SO much! 😂😂😂
yensid7@reddit
It's pretty universal. Most popular in the British isles, where just chips and butter has been a staple for an extremely long time. But most kids seem to have discovered adding chips to their sandwiches at some point anywhere in the US or any country where sandwiches and chips are both eaten.

No, but it's no big deal.
Now i want a pimento cheese sandwich with Doritos on it.
Mpg19470@reddit
Grew up in Missouri. It was pretty common to put chips in a sandwich.
mst3k_42@reddit
Grew up in the Midwest. I totally did (and do) this.
Wrench-Turnbolt@reddit
Never put chips in the sandwich but I would take a piece of deli ham and tear pieces off to pair with a chip and eat it that way.
Brilliant_Towel2727@reddit
I didn't
Semirhage527@reddit
Yes. One of my favorite places as a kid, a little drug store lunch counter, used to make me the most amazing pickle & potato chip sandwich. I still make it at home sometimes, so delicious
SenseNo635@reddit
It’s not my jam but I know people who do it.
Reaganson@reddit
Peanut Butter & Banana with chips.

Never did myself, but knew people who did. Not uncommon.
