This is a ducted fan. Way ahead of it's time. Would have been even better with an afterburner.
liedel@reddit
you're missing a key component which is a jet turbine to power your fan
im-ba@reddit
I mean, I guess you could just dump fuel in the back and light it on fire but you probably wouldn't get any thrust from it
liedel@reddit
Literally how we made it to the moon
Plump_Apparatus@reddit
Eh, it'd make it a motorjet. Which Caproni would go on to build the first of, the Caproni Campini N.1.
ScottOld@reddit
So this is basically an engine with wings and a seat
Vecna_Is_My_Co-Pilot@reddit
Doing donuts in your experimental hand made plane would not have been my first choice.
Basic_Macaron_39@reddit
Test pilots are wild
recumbent_mike@reddit
The whole plane is a donut
Mission_Mulberry9811@reddit
Basically everything is a donut
vonHindenburg@reddit
I am a doughnut, both topologically and by % of mass.
m2chaos13@reddit
I do seem to leave an oily residue on my pillowcase
Coreysurfer@reddit
The Krispy Kreme ‘hot ‘ sign..mmmmm
Kinexity@reddit
topologically you're a set of points.

Whoa. he made the international sign of the donut.
Radioactive_Tuber57@reddit
I’m gonna watch that this afternoon! So good!
PigSlam@reddit
It’s donuts all the way down.
dhelm@reddit
Now I’m craving donut. Think I’ll eat my shoe.
austincamsmith@reddit
A donut inside another donut.

Something tells me it wasn't theirs either.
Whinke@reddit
If it fails doing donuts (or whipping shitties as the Minnesotans day) on the ground I'm not sure I want to take it into the air lol.
fullouterjoin@reddit
Just prepping for sky donuts given the yaw authority this thing has.

'Cutting cookies'
MattWatchesMeSleep@reddit
Are you kidding me? I think it’s the only choice.
dvowel@reddit
We aren't the same. The world needs more pre take-off donuts.
Smellynerfherder@reddit
Oh, to have been an aeronautical engineer in the '30s, man. Drag wasn't real and no one knew your idea was ridiculous until after you'd spend all the money.
JaggedMetalOs@reddit
Be careful who you call ugly in middle school :)
IRingTwyce@reddit
Now I want to see one of these with wings on it and a cockpit slapped on top!

SmokeyUnicycle@reddit
I like the viewing window, pilot half in the turbine and random fire coming out of the vertical stabilizer

Thrust to weight ratio: yes

TWR: Fatal
sithelephant@reddit
Prone, submerged in water, the human body can take around 10km/s of delta-v over the range of 10-30g, before people tap out.
So, quite doable in principle.
Brialmont@reddit
OK. You do it and I'll watch. Oh, and I'll hold your wallet for you.
Vecna_Is_My_Co-Pilot@reddit
That would be absolutely insane for 5 whole minutes until the fyel ran dry
Beautiful-Edge-22@reddit
While the high bypass turbofan won't do it any favors for Mach 1+ fight, it would deliver an insane amount of thrust and power, and do so more efficiently, in subsonic flight.
wintrmt3@reddit
Without a cockpit that's a cruise missile.
Rooilia@reddit
That the 00s and 10s, but even then AVA developed a thick wing that blew every other wing design out of the water. The reason why Dr.I and D.VII were such a success.
Brialmont@reddit
AVA? I know it much be something in Germany about 1916, but I don't know what.
DeficiencyOfGravitas@reddit
Nah, the 50s was the best time for those engineers. So many technologies available for the first time. The jet engine gave "unlimited" thrust and new metallurgy gave the ability to withstand that thrust. The result? Anything you can dream of.
It's amazing to think that the A-12 was designed in the late 50s. Just over a decade of the adoption of the jet engine and they were pushing it to the max.
Smellynerfherder@reddit
Totally agree. Both eras feel like they had a spirit of wild adventure and exploration to them. The 50s had so many exciting developments. That Cold War defense money was burning a hole too!
pesca_22@reddit
keep in mind that the '30 will be there in 4 years...
Vwampage@reddit
The real drag was the friends we made along the way!
reddituserperson1122@reddit
The drag was inside us the whole time.

Now I want a rc plane of that ! Anyone got any plans?
DarthBrooks69420@reddit
Vectored thrust baby.
This plane is such a silly goober, I bet a modern electric version would be a hoot to fly.

Funny how much more stable it is in the air!

they didnt even bother to clean that field for rocks and holes, who would be stable in there?

Stupid Italian’s
__Rosso__@reddit
Italians were actually very advanced when it came to aircraft during 30s, 40s and 50s, creating many great designs.
Cr.42 was one of the best biplanes, their earlier monoplanes were very successful, later 5 series of aircraft in form of G.55, Re.2005 and MC.205 were all either on par or superior to piston aircraft produced by Germans, with G.55 being produced post war with Merlin engines. Finally G.91 was quite a successful little jet used my multiple NATO countries.
They were also second ever country to fly a jet aircraft, granted it was a motorjet, rather then turbojet, but it was a jet aircraft.
They had planes that set multiple world records during that time, had some quite good bombers for late 30s as well.
So if there was one thing Italy wasn't incompetent during that time, it was aircraft production.
AmbassadorCurrent973@reddit
Hey it’s flying well
