Has anyone done Uber Eats, Deliveroo, or Just Eat as a side hustle in the UK and is it actually worth it?

I’m considering doing food delivery on the side for some extra cash and wanted to hear real experiences.
Roughly how much were you making, and how many hours were you putting in? I’m not driving so I don’t need to worry about fuel or insurance.
Early_Enthusiasm_787@reddit
A second job isn’t a side hussle. It just means your main job doesn’t pay enough
Rude_Conversation618@reddit
Hate the term, another Americanism thats crept in because to say “second job” is seen as a downgrade. Side hustle sounds way cooler but in fact youre just working for another employer in one way or another
Early_Enthusiasm_787@reddit
I mean a side hustle might be a way of getting extra cash like Vinted or I used to do secret shopper jobs at nice places. It wasn’t paid but got amazing expensive meals for nothing. Delivery uber eats is not a side hustle. What’s the hustle? lol
Chidoribraindev@reddit
Maybe in 2013 it was worth it

I work 13 hours a week I don't deliver for Uber eats etc but I do it for one shop. It is good however I manage around minimum wage per hour or just above. Tbh jobs are scarce in the UK it's why I've kept it. I usually pay £50 a week for fuel. So I'm left with £105.23 per week. I don't usually spend alot and live with parents so I don't have a wide expenditure only petrol and phone contract. My car insurance is paid off yearly and my delivery insurance is provided by my employer.
OptionalQuality789@reddit
You’re being paid less than minimum wage. That’s a horrendous wage.
h_424@reddit
Oops my maths was abit wrong I have left over £115.23 per week. I hope to get a new job but due to the job market I'm still working at this. My total take home pay is £165.23 before petrol costs.
OptionalQuality789@reddit
£115/13 is still £8.80 an hour, which is below minimum wage.
Nonsense. Uni students work in bars and retail all the time. I did for my entire 4 year degree.
h_424@reddit
Petrol money is not considered in my wage. You're expected to pay out of your own wage. But yes I am looking for a new job. Hopefully I get one soon.
OptionalQuality789@reddit
Yeah that makes it much worse for you. Really they should be paying for your fuel. What they’re doing is illegal.
WGD23@reddit
Nah, he's self employed. Allegedly.
h_424@reddit
My £50 a week is not due to the delivery job I do. I pay £50 a week for petrol because outside of that I do drive a lot for hospital work and university which are usually a 30 min drive each way and my hospital job is an 1hr drive each way.
WGD23@reddit
Check out London eats on YouTube, he's always upfront about his earnings, which are often less than minimum wage
Wibble201@reddit
London Hustle is good too.
ReallyIntriguing@reddit
Is that the black Uber driver?
PurpleSpeech8334@reddit
I really enjoy watching London Hustle as well.
AliMinion@reddit
Also try Deliver the Food on YT and Twitch. Fred delivers around Kingston upon Thames in SW London. He livestreams most evenings and is excellent second monitor content.
Theres3ofMe@reddit
I love watching him! Such a nice fella!
LegDry2498@reddit
I love binge watching him 😂
WGD23@reddit
He's my go to 'i've just woke up at 3am and cant get back to sleep' content
LegDry2498@reddit
I’ve started to watch Tesla FSD videos too as it’s just been approved in NL. So will come to the UK soon too, I hope!
Yoguls@reddit
Daft question, but if you're not driving, how are you delivering?
FornyHucker22@reddit
I’m gonna guess a bike

Then they should be asking for specifics about bicycle deliveries as there will be a large difference between the earnings of the 2
weregonnamakit@reddit
Didnt he say “Im not driving”? Not sure if that is clear enough for you?
Top_Mirror211@reddit (OP)
On a bike. How else?
hassan_26@reddit
Jetpack of course!
smushs88@reddit
Make sure you check the delivery address before accepting orders if you’re cycling.
I live a little out of the city centre and the amount of deliveries I’ve had where the guy has rocked up on a pedal bike and bemoaned the distance is amusing for me, less so for them. 🤣
tmr89@reddit
Hope you tipped him!
Top_Mirror211@reddit (OP)
🤣🤣🤣
Any-Skill-5128@reddit
So your CBT and get a cheap 125 bike amazing on fuel
BowiesFixedPupil@reddit
Plenty of places are simple enough on a bicycle. We only get the occasional e-Bike where we are but where but it's not uncommon for bicycles particularly in cities or flatter areas.
WheresWalldough@reddit
it's all e-bikes here in London.
I often see a bike with phone outside a takeaway and think "someone will nick that". Seems quite risky.

I currently do Ubereats and deliveroo as a part time/side gig. Pay varies wildly from 2hours online and zero orders to 80quid in 2 hours. Insurance is PAYG and supplementary to your current car insurance. Tax is self assessment but honestly you don't pay much after mileage etc.
On average, in Edinburgh (but not city centre) I expect to make a minimum of £15 per hour, up to £20 on weekends. I strictly work between 5 and 9pm and not every day. For the 4hours I'd expect between 45 and 65 midweek, weekend if expect 60-80. Remember, tipping isn't a thing here, and it shouldn't be. In every 100 delivery maybe 4 or 5 tip.
It is saturated with drivers as well which doesn't help. But it's zero hours/totally flexible and I like it for that.
Top_Mirror211@reddit (OP)
Thank you for your comment I appreciate it
dottymouse@reddit
I'm really surprised that no-one tips... I always do because I feel guilty for being so lazy!
most_crispy_owl@reddit
Sounds like you're getting a decent amount per month from it? Do you work remotely?
I'm considering it since I work remotely and when it's raining I feel trapped inside. I wouldn't mind listening to podcasts and doing deliveries
Individual_Pass3933@reddit
I don't do delivery every day, I only do it when I have something to pay for that I didn't budget for or was an impulse spend. I have a full time job so I couldn't work every day even if I wanted to. It's boring as hell as well.
Born_Percentage7122@reddit
What about domino's delivery driver?
Itchy-Ad4421@reddit
Couple of friends do it. One does / did the odd Amazon flex I think it’s called (he’s in a car) and was getting about 180 for half a day but they were few and far between He does uber eats also and does that early hours until about 8am then goes back out later but always finished around lunch time - he only stays local - not city centre and makes about 80 per day.
Another friend does it on a moped. Uber eats and deliveroo. City centre - mainly student accommodation. He pulls in a couple of hundred per day - I think largely as he was seeing the same people day in / day out so just gave them his number and they go direct to him.
humblevessell@reddit
I did it for 6 years and it used to be good until it got taken over by all the illegals which pushed the fees down massively because they will take anything. You can probably still make minimum wage if you're on a cheap moped.
DeapVally@reddit
You need youtube, not reddit.
MargThatcher12@reddit
There’s some creators on TikTok who record themselves doing Uber/Deliveroo etc. on bikes/Surons - idk any of them by name but have a look and you’ll surely find some
Puzzleheaded-Pop893@reddit
I did it as a side hustle and the honest answer is: it can be worth it, but only if your area is busy and you treat it strategically. The people making decent money usually work peak hours (lunch, dinner, weekends), know the good zones, and often run multiple apps. People relying on one app in a slow town seem to struggle a lot more.
If you’re on a bike and don’t have fuel/insurance costs, you’re already in a better position than drivers. A lot of UK drivers say car costs can wipe out profits, while bikes/e-bikes keep more of the earnings.
Realistically, expect something like “some hours are great, some are dead.” Busy shifts might feel solid, quiet shifts can be you waiting around for scraps. I’d think of it as extra cash, not guaranteed income. Best move is sign up, test your local market for 2–3 weeks, and see your actual hourly average after all costs and time. If it works, keep it. If not, you’ve lost nothing but a few evenings.
