With Jet fuel set to run out in the next three weeks, Were are you going on holiday in the UK?
Posted by nodemus@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 101 comments
I know that a UK holiday in the summer can be very expensive just as much as a holiday abroad. I’ve notice that prices for stays in the UK have risen sharply due to this situation.
waynownow@reddit
Jet fuel is not going to "run out" in three weeks. Global supply is down by maybe 10%. Physically the most effected areas are more Asia than Europe anyway. Yes that has a knock on price effect everywhere (which has already been seen and may get somewhat worse), who ought to reduce demand sufficiently to balance out the supply issues.
Which-World-6533@reddit
It really depends on where countries typically buy their oil.
While the Middle East is the largest extractor and refiner of oil, is not the only source.
Always remember, the Mass Media thrives on panic.
Difficult-Award-4391@reddit
The BBC doesn;t
waynownow@reddit
Yes exactly, the point being we hardly get any oil from the middle east anyway (it's coming more from Europe, Africa, and the US).
matomo23@reddit
Where do you think the aviation fuel they refine in The Netherlands comes from?
Puzzleheaded-Web1519@reddit
I know. I can’t move in my house because of our newly replenished stock of toilet rolls.
Open_Question5504@reddit
Europe imports 50% of its jet fuel from the gulf.
waynownow@reddit
This right here is the problem with people asking AI questions and just trusting the absolute nonsense it spits out.
Europe sources the vast majority of its jet fuel (like 70-80%), from.... Europe.
Of the remaining amount that imports, around 50% comes from the Middle East, although even not all of that is through the straight of Hormuz (roughly 1/3 or so comes via pipeline).
matomo23@reddit
No. Europe refines most of its own jet fuel. A lot of the actual oil comes from the Gulf. The Netherlands doesn’t have any oil!
Open_Question5504@reddit
Sorry - my source was the BBC, didn’t realise that was so contentious.
‘The Gulf is a major source of aviation fuel, accounting for about 50% of Europe's imports. Airports Council International (ACI) Europe said its members had "increasing concerns" about the availability of jet fuel, particularly with the approach of the summer tourism season. It warned smaller airports are particularly vulnerable.’
waynownow@reddit
50%... of imports.
So half of like 20%.
Open_Question5504@reddit
Europe depends on imports for most of its aviation fuel. More than 60 per cent comes from Gulf refineries, with over 40 per cent passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
SnooFloofs3486@reddit
It's not a universal situation. We have carreirs who are already out of fuel supply at specific airports. For example the suppliers to ANC airport who source from China are out. And ANC is the biggest cargo hub airport in North America. In the short run it doesn't necessairly balance out. Some cargo carriers will stop flying to the USA or will change routes to fly direct from Asia to North America, but that that means aroughly 75 tons less cargo per trip each way per flight. And probably adds about 50% to the price per ton of cargo on those flights.
The macro doesn't always scale to the micro in these cases and specific supplies of goods will be disproportionatly more expensive or not available.
MissBehav1ing@reddit
Thank you so much for your post. I have an important flight at the start of May and I’m already worried sick about it, and after someone delightfully told me I won’t be going due to jet fuel running out, I’m now even more worried it. Thank you for your post because it’s somewhat calmed my anxiety about it
Ok_Signature_4053@reddit
This entire thing is bollocks we are NOT running out of fuel
gaz909909@reddit
Eurostar... Ferries... It's fine.
Merope5@reddit
dont the ferries need fuel to run?
gaz909909@reddit
No, they work on the tears of virgins!
YetAnotherMia@reddit
Devon, staycation
Merope5@reddit
great place. we lived there for years, now live in Dorset.
Think_Money_6919@reddit
Would rather stay at home than spend my time and money holidaying here
TCJW_designs@reddit
Why’s that?
alice_op@reddit
I'm not the poster you replied to, but share a similar sentiment. If you go to Cornwall or parts of Wales, the locals are so anti-tourist they make you feel very unwelcome. That's aside from the outrageous prices for cottages here, train fares so you're better off driving... why bother.
That said there are unbelievably beautiful spots around the UK. If I had a camper van for example I'd love to tour around here.
Merope5@reddit
We lived in Devon for years, near the Cornwall border. we visited Cornwall often, never had a problem with the locals
EngineeringCockney@reddit
I would also agree. Value for money in restaurants, tourist attractions etc let alone hotels just dosn’t feel worth it enough to holiday in the UK
brykins@reddit
We've a holiday cottage booked for the first week of May. It's 400 miles away, my car does 350 miles to a tank. Fingers crossed they're not rationing fuel by then!
Merope5@reddit
could you get there by train?
YetAnotherMia@reddit
You could fill some Jerry cans?
brykins@reddit
HaHa! Have you seen the boot of an MX5? We're already hoping it's going to be warm so we don't have to take too many clothes 🤣
Educational_Walk_239@reddit
Can you cut a hole in the floor and Flintstones it for 50 miles?
Etheria_system@reddit
It isn’t going to run out, there just might be some shortages. Sending people into panic mode with incorrect information doesn’t help anyone
Merope5@reddit
I’m panicking because we are hoping to move to the Isle of Wight but don’t want to get marooned if the ferries can’t run 😿
SousukeUK@reddit
Or maybe that's the idea!
Now airlines can charge you whatever they want saying fuel shortage, increased price and demand!
Even though most airlines locks in price with supplier for many years in advance and just have to reduce few flight to make up for supply shortage!
workoutisfun@reddit
I have a flight from US to UK. But I'm not gonna travel anymore tbh because I don't want to get stuck in the UK. I wanted to see my partner. Life sucks.
weneedanotherGarzon@reddit
You don't want to get stuck with your partner? Just go. I'm going to visit my gf in Colombia and I would not be mad if I got stuck there.
workoutisfun@reddit
I'm on a work visa and that would get me fired.
weneedanotherGarzon@reddit
But it wouldn't be your fault, i would quit that company if they can't understand..
redditreddit080@reddit
Currently in Turkey feeling smug, that might wear off quickly come Summer hols

“With jet fuel set to run out in the next three weeks”
Since when?
matomo23@reddit
Are you under a rock mate?
SeoulGalmegi@reddit
Jet fuel is not going to run out in three weeks.
matomo23@reddit
It will run out intermittently at some airports though.
SnooFloofs3486@reddit
It already is. Most people simply don't understand how fuel supply actually works. Typically the fuel supply systems at airports are a consortium to operate the system, but the fuel is not shared. It's not a gas station. Every airline has to provide its own fuel. And they do so with marketing contracts. The suppliers who source from refiners who are in countries with export controls (china for example) are already out of fuel at certain airports. And that means the carriers who rely on that source are out even if the fuel tanks are full from other airline's supplies.
So - it's already happening right now. There are airlines who cannot fly to certain airports because they don't have any fuel available at that airport.
matomo23@reddit
I know. I’ve no idea why I got downvoted to oblivion for even suggesting that some airports will intermittently not be able to get it!
SeoulGalmegi@reddit
Which airports? Any UK ones?
GrumpChorlton@reddit
It probably won’t run out this year
SeoulGalmegi@reddit
It's not going to 'run out' full stop.
Rich-Peak-3902@reddit
Well, it will at *some* point; it is a finite resource.
SeoulGalmegi@reddit
I imagine that before it does we'll adjust to some other resource. And so we won't ever actually use it all up. So it won't ever completely run out.
Manatsuu@reddit
No, just het fuel is not going to run out. There are going to be shortages if this continues, sure. But a shortage is very different from something running out.
matomo23@reddit
But it may run out at some airports, for a while. That’s all that matters if you’re flying back from one of those airports.
TheRadishBros@reddit
Share a single reliable source that shows there will be zero jet fuel in the UK in less than a months time.
matomo23@reddit
Think about this for just a minute. The airlines are saying plenty of airports across Europe could run into supply issues meaning they could have to cancel some flights.
So yes you may be able to get to your destination but depending on the size of the airport you may struggle to get back or have to go from another airport.
rocket-scientist94@reddit

ae_wilson@reddit
Are you dense mate?
BrillsonHawk@reddit
We onky get 25% of our jet fuel from the middle east, so we're not going to run out. Sure there might be shortages, but we don't need to be dramatic about it
Open_Question5504@reddit
50% of European supply comes from the gulf.
matomo23@reddit
We get a good chunk from The Netherlands but where do you think it originally comes from?
AppearanceDizzy7006@reddit
Not trying to fear monger or anything but think its more along the lines of 40% as it was before the war. 25% came from Kuwait
Haunting-Button-4281@reddit
Jet fuel is not going to run out in 3 weeks. The were telling us 40 years ago oil would be gone in a couple of years. Its not going to happen
Defiant-Insect-3785@reddit
I thought I was imagining this! I swear that as a kid we were being told to cut down on using fossil fuels because they would run out. Then all of a sudden it’s because of climate change and people look at me like I’m crazy when I say we were told we’d run out.
Careless_Soup_109@reddit
In my understanding, we didn't run out of oil because we got better at finding more of it.
Which-World-6533@reddit
Probably due to the Iran / Iraq War. I remember the same panic where we were told we had 20 years of oil left.
However the Iran / Iraq war ended and new oil fields were discovered. This led to the oil glut of the 80's when prices fell substantially.
Haunting-Button-4281@reddit
Were definitely told that, was about 1986/7, Was also told the Berlin wall would never come down!
Defiant-Insect-3785@reddit
That sounds right, I’d have been at primary school then. Don’t remember being told the Berlin Wall wouldn’t come down but running out of fossil fuels and acid rain were definitely concerns!
ARobertNotABob@reddit
UK to receive last tanker of jet fuel from Middle East this week
Haunting-Button-4281@reddit
Yeah I can read the news, I just dont believe all the news. Been around too long
bozwold@reddit
Liquid gold. The value lies in the rarity or perceived rarity.
Haunting-Button-4281@reddit
Bang on. Perceived is 100% right
matomo23@reddit
Do you not do the news?
OpenedCan@reddit
I watch it.
Do you not understand it?
Haunting-Button-4281@reddit
Yeap and I can also think for myself. The news os not always 100% you know...there are many, many examples of where they push an agenda
LaughingGravy1001@reddit
I can clearly remember being in the last year of primary school and my teacher telling us that oil would run out in 30 years. That was 1985
Haunting-Button-4281@reddit
Me too, precisely that!
SeoulGalmegi@reddit
Do you not?
Jet fuel is not going to run out in three weeks.
For fucks sake.
electact@reddit
The news story OP is referring to quoted an aviation trade body as saying Europe could potentially face shortages of jet fuel if the Strait of Hormuz doesn't re-open in the next three weeks.
That is not the same thing as "we will run out of jet fuel in three weeks"
perishingtardis@reddit
Not with that attitude
Legitimate-Ad3778@reddit
Not with that altitude
nodemus@reddit (OP)
Probably not but it’s pushing prices up
Master-Trick2850@reddit
Its not going to run out, same way the UK wasnt going to run out of toilet paper during covid
dont listen to the media fear mongering
bradpitt3@reddit
You may have been reading click bait stories about jet fuel. The reality is that if more jet fuel is needed the price will go up and supply will be switched to produce more jet fuel. That's how market economies adjust to shocks.
First_Folly@reddit
I'll save this for when I'm on the other side of the world in May.
EllieB1953@reddit
Hi nostra, I'm only happy some of the time too.
I'm listening, even though no one else is.
I'm on holiday now, I read your post and I am horrified.
I'm starting to prep for a bad, bad situation now. I'm really starting to think how me and my family will survive this - some of us won't, absolutely. I'm no longer participating in the holiday and I'm spending time reading the news, any info I can, joining preppers communities etc.
macca191@reddit
Another excuse to raise prices.
muttley_87@reddit
If 20% of the world's oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz. One can assume that there will probably be 20% less jet fuel. If that -20% is distributed evenly (it won't) it will result in a reduction of flights and an increase in price obviously.
Some people will just be priced out of a holiday abroad.
GlitteringAward7702@reddit
My god fucking doomer reddit at its finest, cant take anything seriously on this site when this is the type of people who post stuff
Embarrassed_Park2212@reddit
I highly doubt that the amount of jet fuel purchased, they will run out.
But to answer your question, no where, haven't been on holiday in 20 odd years.
Hertfordgal@reddit
Can you please share the link of your source of this scary information?
nodemus@reddit (OP)
Could run out, I apologise
AppearanceDizzy7006@reddit
The media is fear mongering the whole fuel shortage matter
TapeDeckSlick@reddit
Best UK holidays are camping trips imo
DylboyPlopper@reddit
Agree but even that’s not cheap nowadays
docju@reddit
I saw a sky news video the other day suggesting that shortages are only likely to hit places like Vietnam and the Philippines, so I think we are fine.
