Now that we are "getting up there" in age, how are you sleeping?

I can fall asleep fine but I have terrible morning insomnia. I wake up anywhere between 1:30am and 3:00am every day!
Robviously-duh@reddit
I haven't slept good on a regular basis since I was diagnosed with cancer at 49... will turn 60 in August hopefully... I am worn out.. thank goodness for coffee
Elderberries1974@reddit

To be completely honest? The day after I graduated highschool I got on a bud to complete my basic training for the army. I was hung over and tired, I don’t think we stopped the party until about 4am, so I got maybe an hour nap… I haven’t had a proper good nights sleep since. Sure, I haven’t had those occasional periods where I drop off into a coma-like slumber for a day straight and nothing is capable of waking me… but I don’t feel rested and usually revert back to my fucked up ‘I can sleep when I’m dead’ pattern within a day…
systemfrown@reddit
That's a lot of young people. It's not healthy though.
IM_The_Liquor@reddit
Yeah… well, between 16 years of soldiering and another 14 of driving a bus schedule, well… I guess I’m just trained that way over the decades …
Thatstealthygal@reddit
Waking through the night even with HRT.
Middle-Quarter-2678@reddit
56, not working right now, and sleeping well and deeply. I dream almost every night, which still feels strange, because for so many years while working, I'd wake up repeatedly every night, never dream, and feel exhausted in the morning.
I exercise in the morning and evening, cardio both sessions and weights at night, and feel ready to rest a few hours later.
Forsaken-Repeat-7657@reddit
I sleep like a baby or a dead person and have an impossible time waking up. I sleep about 11 hours per night and often nap an additional 1-2. Anyone else?
saw71@reddit
This was me up until 30’s 🤣 just loved my bed. Have you ever checked if you have any health concerns that cause this…Could be worth checking? If not all that sleep sounds magical ✨

strange_dog_TV@reddit
It’s now 5am where I am- and I haven’t slept, thats how I’m going………🥴
saw71@reddit
Been there MANY times! Or if I go to “sleep” (pure exhaustion) early I will be awake at 1am for the rest of the day.
Reader47b@reddit
Up 3 times a night to pee. Not sure if the need wakes me up or I wake up and since I'm awake...I am usually up once for 30-45 minutes before I can fall back to sleep, typically sometimes between 1-3 am.
unsafe357@reddit
Like shit. I'm maybe 10-15lbs heavier than I'd like and have mild sleep apnea. I'm testing a CPAP this week, and the first night was absolute shit. Hoping for a better result tonight.
saw71@reddit
I’m with almost everyone here- it’s almost non existent. This is a person up until my 30’s could sleep as much as possible.Meds are necessary if sleeping at least 3-4 hrs
whoops53@reddit
I have a dodgy mattress and it makes me feel so achy in the mornings. Going to have to look at doing something about it that doesn't involve spending money! Other than that, I sleep well, although I'm tracking my sleep stats and apparently I snore. eek!
NightGod@reddit
They cost about $100, but a mattress topper was a life changer for me. I've actually got two, feather stacked over foam and it's the most comfortable bed I've ever been in
whoops53@reddit
I could stretch to that, for sure. I'll have a look into it, thanks!

I have severe sleep apnea but I was fortunate enough for the VA to approve and pay for my Inspire device and Zepbound. I get some of the best sleep now!

Medicated - perfectly fine.
nancylyn@reddit
Terrible. I wake up every night at 2-3am and it’s a crapshoot if I can fall back asleep. I’ve started eating a half a weed gummy at bedtime so it kicks in when I’m asleep and I fall back asleep much better after I get up to go pee. I use Delta8 because it is very mild.
AnahitaPrince@reddit
Like a teenager... I still stay up too late and go to bed when my eyelids start drooping, and then I'm out like a light until my alarm goes off.
cromulenttapeworm@reddit
Same.
SergeantBeavis@reddit
I finally got my sleep issues under control. I had been taking THC gummies, which work spectacularly, but suppress dreaming. Last October, I quit using them and focused on sleep hygiene. Now I’m normally feeling 7 to 8 hrs.
pnutts00@reddit
What’s that?
Sirloin_Tips@reddit
Once I quit drinking, I sleep like Jesus during the holocaust. Aside from my cats waking across my face.
superthighheater3000@reddit
I fall asleep no problem. 9 or 10pm. Then I wake up somewhere between 2 and 4am for no good reason.
I’d still wake up between 2 and 4 if I went to sleep at 1:55am. Though, if I go to sleep at 7pm, I’ll wake up at midnight. There is no winning here.
mrCOFFEEPOWER@reddit
Ugh I totally get that. It’s the worst when your body just decides it’s time to be awake for no reason. I went through something super similar for a few months, waking up around 3am every night like clockwork. What helped me a bit was cutting out screens before bed and keeping my room cooler, but honestly the biggest difference came from trying this sleep stack supplement called som sleep. I actually heard about it on a Reddit thread. It’s a drug-free drink mix with stuff like magnesium and GABA. It’s a little expensive compared to the usual OTC stuff at CVS, but it works well.
Green_leaf47@reddit
Horribly once I hit menopause, way better since HRT
VicDough@reddit
I’ve been considering HRT. Got a hysterectomy about 14 years ago. My hot flashes have gone away, but I still have really bad brain fog and my sleep is crap. What was your experience when she started HRT?
Green_leaf47@reddit
There’s a window for HRT after going through menopause that’s ideal to start within so you’d have to look into it. Might be different for surgically induced though. I’ve heard that’s a super rough way to go through menopause.
I started with both estrogen (topical gel) and oral progesterone.
I stopped having hot flashes within the week. The first evening when I took progesterone I felt pleasantly sleepy before bed for the first time in years.
Now I might wake up from once to a few times in the night, but briefly unless I’m really stressed about something and my brain goes. But so much better quality of sleep.
I feel cognitively better - not 100% but definitely sharper. Some improvements in mood and anxiety as well. I recently started a low dose of testosterone (gel) and I don’t know if it’s related but my mood was better for no apparent reason a couple months in.
VicDough@reddit
Thanks. Yeah I’ve heard there’s a window. Unfortunately for me, HRT was still black labeled when I had my hysterectomy. Interesting about testosterone tho. I’ve got my annual doctor appointment in a couple of months, I’ll follow up with her. Glad it’s helping you out friend.
TheWuziMu1@reddit
I sleep like a baby. I wake up every few hours and cry.
SolomonGrumpy@reddit

56f. Started having terrible insomnia about 10 or so years ago. Doc put me on Gabapentin and now I sleep beautifully. It feels like a clean, healthy sleep, not a heavy, drug-induced sleep. I started out taking 100-300mg per night but now I take 600-800mgs because I also have the worst case of restless legs (which I've had since childhood but it gets worse with age). I highly recommend this drug!
Leading-Amoeba-4172@reddit
Yeah…gonna pass. Glad it’s working for you but it comes with a big increase of developing dementia.

Horrible but then I started taking Mood sleepy time gummies and now I can sleep! When menopause started, sleeping became a myth. I spent 10 years sleep deprived. Then I tried a gummy and now sleep is much better. Not perfect, but I can get a solid 6-7 hours a night. It just makes it interesting when I go in for my yearly physical/blood work and I have to tell my doctor that I will have Delta 9/THC in my blood.
Intrepid_Practice956@reddit
Currently I'm trying to find knee pillows that work. I am on drugs after cancer and others that make it hard to go to sleep. Sometimes melatonin, gummies, or magnesium will help, but if not it isnt rare for me to be up until 4 or 5 and then sleep until noon or so.

Truly, I sleep 6 hours or so on average. And I cannot nap without feeling like shit, I hate it. My old days of sleeping a day away are over. I'm up with the stinkin sun and the cats.
I also cannot stand comforters. Give me a muslin blanket or a single ply 10$ quilt from the Dollar Store and I am good to go.

MrSpud45@reddit
48 - sometimes I'll sleep through, others anywhere between 1:30 to 3. Would the fact i have 20mins shut eye during my lunch break effect this?
GroundbreakingRip970@reddit
I need it to be really cold or I don’t stay asleep long
Cantech667@reddit
So so. I’m 59, and I’ve always had occasional insomnia. I usually get 4 to 6 hours a night. I take a magnesium/melatonin pill about an hour before going to bed, which is usually about 10 PM. I use a CPAP, and I can usually sleep until at least 3 AM. Sometimes I’m up earlier, but this morning I was up at 4:30 a.m., which is sleeping in for me.
This afternoon, I dozed off for about 40 minutes. It was a nice nap, which doesn’t happen often with me.

NaughtyLittleDogs@reddit
I have never slept well and the situation has not improved with age. I take an TOC sleep medication every night. That's the only reason I fall asleep and stay that way for around 6 hours every night.
WileyCoyote7@reddit
With exercise and diet, good. If I slack off, I can see it in my sleep; nervous or extra energy/racing thoughts/etc. keep me awake or wake me up. I take some L-theanine at night with my decaf tea and that seems to help as well.
Oh, and it has to be cold, dark and (thanks to tinnitus) with some slight background noise; ceiling fan does the trick.
Roboto33@reddit
I use a CPAP machine and it’s been phenomenal! Like I had years of very poor sleep and was always feeling tired or groggy. Now I get up early, feel great and I’m never looking back. My sleep was awful before due to sleep apnea
AshleyRoeder33@reddit
I get up at least once every night to pee. It’s infuriating. Couldn’t tell you the last uninterrupted night I got.
Not a diabetic
splorp_evilbastard@reddit
Same. My A1C was 5.1, so not diabetes. I don't have difficulty peeing, so not likely a prostate issue, and the color is normal. There's no obvious cause, but I went from never waking up to pee to getting up 2-3 times a night.
jeffreynya@reddit
I have a 4.9 A1C, but my fasting glucose is almost always over 110 and usually in the 115 range. So there is something going on with that and I think it affects my sleep.
GoTakeAHike00@reddit
I've heard on lots of podcasts about sleep that both of these things - the insomnia and elevated morning BG - are due to a nocturnal cortisol spike. I think it's next to impossible to actually test for this, and I really don't know if there's anything that can actually be DONE about it 🫤. My husband, who is 67, has the same issue sometimes: elevated fasted morning BG.
The times I've checked mine, it's always been below 100.
jeffreynya@reddit
Stress reduction is about the best thing to do for it. But for me I have the elevated BG and also some chronic inflammation that causes me issues as well. Once I get weight down it will be better I think. Its just hard when everything is fighting against you.
AshleyRoeder33@reddit
I’m so mad about it. I used to sleep so well; like the dead. Now from a dead sleep I’ll wake up to pee and be angry on the toilet. My last A1C was 4.6, not in menopause, I’m not retaining water, I drink the proper amount daily, I don’t drink water before bed, no sleep apnea. There’s just no reason for it. Other than to piss me off.
Anyway, see ya at 1 am on the toilet.
GoTakeAHike00@reddit
This is 100% me as well, and has been for the past several years, though I've had early morning insomnia for over 25 years now. Also not diabetic. Pisses me TF off, because the handful of times I am in full REM sleep and have to pee really badly, that gets incorporated INTO THE DREAM, and I eventually realize that I have to pee badly IRL.
I went on HRT/estradiol patch last fall, and after the dose was adjusted, it worked very well for my sleep, esp. falling BACK asleep at 3AM after the pee...until it didn't. Asked my NP for the next higher dose, which she reluctantly did. That worked for a few nights, but then didn't, and now my tits are sore, so I'm going back down to the lower dose.
So, a few weeks ago, and at her suggestion, I decided to try progesterone, which is supposed to be taken at night due to its effect to cause drowsiness. Worked great for a few days, now we're kind of back to square one.
Since I've never really had much of a problem falling asleep, I'm now thinking I might just try taking it at 3AM instead of when I go to bed. My solution to the insomnia is to just read my Kindle until I fall back asleep, which can be anywhere from 1-3 hours later 😵💫.
Husband and I have been sleeping in separate bedrooms for probably 15 years now, and he takes Trazadone because both of us have completely jacked up sleep issues and don't do well sharing a bed (and separate tents when we go camping). First question we ask each other in the morning: "how did you sleep?"

After I quit drinking and realized that the vast majority of decisions can wait until the next day, sleep really improved. I have always fallen asleep easily, but as with you, there was a period of time where I would snap awake, often mind racing, in middle of the night.
Now, I make sure to calendar or note anything I need to do the next day before I go to sleep, or if I do wake up, I write it down, which makes it easier to get out of my mind. I also exercise more, and have slowed down caffeine consumption late at night, which I believe has helped. The last thing I would note is that taking magnesium an hour or so before bed seems to help, although I had to ramp up my dose over time. Too much causes crazy dreams, but not great sleep.

Lot of people from the military definitely be that way. And it's healthy too since consistency of timing is as important to sleep quality as quantity.

What's with the danged tingling? I was told I have mild carple tunnel syndrome and I wear wrist braces to bed but I'm not sure they actually help.
CommonWursts@reddit
If you can get the carpal tunnel release surgery, do it. It’s a quick, simple procedure. I had both of mine done and it helped so much. Definitely have the doc order PT post surgery. Mine consisted of paraffin dip, a few exercises, and really nice hand massages once or twice a week. Also, if you don’t have a bidet attachment, you will wish you did. And beware of having both hands done at once. That can be a…um…challenge in that area.
nothin-but-the-rain@reddit
Melatonin. Game changer.
Cooterboone@reddit
Melatonin always leads to sleep paralysis for me if I take it for more than a couple of days in a row. Anyone else have that problem?
Cooterboone@reddit
I'm all over the place. Used to be that I couldn't fall asleep, which is still mostly what happens. But now, I will also wake up around 4am and can't go back to sleep for an hour+. And I never sleep-in anymore. I'm awake at the same time every day, regardless of how much sleep/quality of sleep I get. I'm doing all the "right" things for sleep hygiene.
And when I find a solution to the getting to sleep issue, it never lasts. A podcast, sleep music, even a THC gummy will work for a few weeks, and then just as abruptly, they will stop working.
No one told me that sucking at sleeping was something I'd have to deal with.
DtchGrl@reddit
I've always been a horrible sleeper and it's just getting worse.
I drink a sleepy time extra tea (which helps but adds to the bathroom breaks) and a melatonin every night. If I have ANY caffeine after 10am, I'm needing an advil/Tylenol pm on top of the above if I want to sleep.

As a woman, HRT. Progesterone is the sleep hormone. Our bodies suck because we think “yay, no more periods!” but find out the hard way how much our bodies depend on estrogen and progesterone.
Ooh, and what’s really fun is that visceral fat produces estrogen. So what does our bodies do, even if we’ve always managed our weight well? It creates the meno-belly to source estrogen! But not progesterone. No sleep for you!

PUT THE SLEEP TRACKER AWAY AND NIGHT AND STOP USING IT TO TRACK YOUR SLEEP.
Seriously, the worst sleep I ever got, for over a year, was from laying awake at night stressing about the quantity and quality of my sleep before finally dozing off for just a few hours at 3:00 a.m. and then waking up to my watch telling me I was going to be miserable all day because my sleep sucked.
As soon as I stopped wearing it my sleep improved and reverted to normal literally overnight. Now I sleep like a rock for 8 hours no problem and wake up feeling rejuvenated.

MerlinsMentor@reddit
Not great. I have sleep apnea, so once I started using a CPAP machine, it got better. But now that I've lost my job and am not working, I find that I wake up for long stretches of time each night. It's not stress (I am less stressed now than when I was working, for sure) -- I think it's just simply not being as tired anymore.
Villanellesnexthit@reddit
Seems I’m in the opposite camp. I’ve always slept like the dead. Now I just need more of it. I can sleep for 12 hours, wake up, do some stuff, then take a nap. Then I can go back to bed at my normal bedtime.

I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV, but... have you had your tsh levels checked? I have the autoimmune form if hypothyroidism, but as we age, it is really common to have our thyroid decide to not extend the warranty.
Before I was diagnosed, I'd sleep for 12 plus hours, get out of bed and calculate how long until I could lay back down

I too wake up at least once between 12-1. I let the dogs out to pee (because they hear me), and stumble around the house checking all the doors are locked (an ocd type hanit I inherited from my dad).
Then I lie on the sofa staring at the ceiling for about 15-20 minutes before bringing the dogs back in. Or sometimes I sit outside with the dogs, staring at the moon.
Then I go back to bed and turn on YouTube and put a documentary or something like that on which helps me fall back asleep.
I can't remember the last time I was able to sleep the whole night through.
My youngest is disabled due to epilepsy and I think my body got programmed to sleep with one ear open, so to speak, since there's been many a night she's had a seizure.
I've also had many pets with medical issues over the years I've had to care for that's kept me up at night. One dog I had to carry up and downstairs and help him use the restroom.
My other kid had addiction problems for years and I would get calls waking me up at night. She'd either be stranded somewhere, in the ER, or in jail.
So it's like my circadian rhythm is permanently fucked up.
Coincidentally, my primary doctor just suggested I see sleep medicine to do a sleep study.

Horrible but I have started listening to sleep meditation pod casts and sleepy crime podcasts to fall asleep and when I wake up in the night, put on another pod cast and I out in maybe 3 to 5 minutes. game changer for me.
Ones to try - Deep Sleep, Crimes at Bed Time, Dead Sleep, Sleep Cove, Mysteries at Bed Time.
It is the low droning voice that is very melodic to me, even when they just read a book. keeps my brain engaged enough to NOT start thinking ,but not engaged enough not to fall asleep. I have also found that the Sleep Cove meditation has also helped with mood because some of them are also Sleep hypnotherapy.

Oh yes, I've been going to sleep to audiobooks for most of the last decade. Usually books I've already read, so it doesn't matter if I miss a chapter. I set a timer for 30 minutes but I'd say I'm out within 10-15 almost every night. I helps me not think about other stuff, and if I wake in the middle of the night for more than a few minutes I'll turn it back on for the same reason.

I sleep great as long as I don’t have caffeine after 3 pm and don’t have more than 2 drinks in the evening. Late-day caffeine makes it hard for me to fall asleep, too much alcohol and I wake up anywhere between 1 and 3 am and have a bear of a time getting back to sleep. Either one and I don’t get enough deep/REM sleep. I got an Oura ring about 6 months ago and the sleep tracking really helped me identify patterns/behaviors that both positively and negatively impacted my rest. If I get plenty of exercise and avoid the aforementioned behaviors, I sleep like a rock.

I am the same way. Get to sleep around 11 perfectly, but then up at 3:30. I can usually get back to sleep but takes a bit. Its been getting a little better now. I am about 50lb over weight and have pre-diabetes with some other chronic inflamatory issues. As I get these under control the better my sleep is getting.

Used to have the same issue. Mentioned it to my doc and he recommended Magnesium and Potassium supplements, which was surprising because he isn't one of those woo-woo docs into holistic medicine. But it actually worked. Stopped the restless legs at night as well as the leg/foot cramping that would jolt me out of sleep.

Not great. I’m 8 weeks post hysterectomy though so I’m also exhausted on top of not sleeping enough.
No-Jump-9601@reddit
I have 2 sleeping modes but unfortunately I can’t control which of them is going to occur.
My preferred routine is a final pee around midnight and wake around 6. This occurs about 4 nights a week and occasionally on 2 consecutive nights.
Less favourable is a final pee around midnight, wake around 2.30 to pee and stay awake, sometimes for a few minutes, sometimes an hour or more. Then I wake again around 6.
In both cases, my alarm isn’t due until 6.30.
These patterns have become normal, regardless of my evening routine before bed. If I go to bed earlier, the patterns shift earlier and they persist regardless of alcohol or the amount of food I eat.
Qu3-ch1ngaderas@reddit
Fucking amazing, once I got a cpap 10yrs ago. I wish I would have addressed my sleep apnea 10yrs earlier. Wasted so many years being tired. I'll typically fall asleep around 10pm and wake up around 5, sometimes 4

Since I removed alcohol my sleeps are incredible. No more 3 am wake ups feeling gross and anxious.
Tall-Yard-407@reddit
This has been the hardest thing to remove from my life. I’ve purposely left an empty bottle of cheap whiskey in the pantry. The snob in me is repelled and the the boozer in me was disappointed to find that it was empty. Now when I’m in the pantry and I see it I’m reminded of how I was being a snob about something that’s bad for me and also how desperate I was for a drink that I got that cheap bottle from the grocery store at 10am in the middle of the week and how much I don’t want to be that person anymore.
mukwah@reddit
Oh I know that 10 am booze run well. I don't want to be that person either. I never was til COVID escalated my alcoholism.

I deliver a lot of 10am booze. As a non drinker, I never understood why people were getting their alcohol delivered so early in the morning.
miss_pdx111@reddit
I wake up at 4am every single night. I have tried to just get up but I am way too tired! So I just lay there and dose on and off. And then I have to pee. And then I start thinking about work. And it's basically useless to even try to go back to sleep at some point. I hate it.
I've tried gummies, sleep meds, Ashwaghanda, Melatonin, eating protein before bed, drinking sleepy tea, drinking mushroom hot chocolate. Nothing has helped.
juanalacubanagringa@reddit
Progesterone did the trick for me!

Poorly. Force yourself to stay in bed and try to sleep. No devices in the middle of the night.
Sometimes it's good to change location. I move to the living room and sleep the rest of the night there.
It's important to try to clear your mind. Focus on your breathing... but don't focus too much.
If your mind is racing take Valerian.
Stop all types of caffeine and alcohol. Alcohol is a pretty good cause for your sleep to become interrupted in the middle of the night. Plus you are spiking your brain up and down with both of these substances.
Do not take Melatonin. Your body will compensate by underproducing and your following evenings will become harder.
Do some exercise during the day, but not in the evening, so your body relaxes.
Eat healthily. Salads, vegetables and all of that. If overweight, try to lose it.
All of this helps little by little.

Once I find a position that doesn't aggravate my arthritis or bursitis, I typically have to pee.
Then I have to find the position again, which is good for about an hour. Then it starts hurting again, so I have to wake up and find a new position.
I usually give up around 3am cos I've run out of possible positions and my back/hips hurt like hell.
Thankfully, I've always been an insomniac.

This was me plus peeing about five times a night. No liquids after seven and generic flomax helped the pee problem. Now it's down to once per night. Well, I’m trying to get used to my CPAP machine. I can’t help but feel like I’ve got an infant xenomorph clamped on to my face. It hasn’t burst out of my chest yet so I guess I’m doing okay. The problem is that now that I’m “getting up there” in age my hair has decided it doesn’t want to grow out of the top of my head, it’s decided that it wants to grow out of and around my nostrils. When that thing is on my face, the air blowing out tickles my nose and I can’t scratch or rub my nose. I have to break the seal to get under the mask or remove it; which requires me to be awake to do. When I do that it sounds like a vacuum cleaner. I just can’t win with this thing.
H-is-for-Hopeless@reddit

2 mgs Delta-9 with 10 mgs CBD definitely assists with being able to get back to sleep - like waking up at 2 am I’m able to just roll over and get back to sleep. Also, increased exercise and water intake (though no water after 9 pm to help keep bladder from filling up).
ActionCalhoun@reddit

The military taught me to sleep anywhere, and I still can, but that doesn't mean I get a "good" sleep. I can go to bed, 8, 9, 10, crash within minutes, and wake up an hour and a half (almost exactly) later to pee. I'll get back bed and fall asleep immediately again, and wake up a few hours later for another pee. Then back and asleep again until my alarm.
Trouble is, I FREAKIN' FALL ASLEEP AT MY DESK, the next day. Works been accommodating and provided me a sit/stand desk so that if I find myself falling asleep I can go to a standing position.
I now monitor my sleep, and I'm averaging about an hour of REM, no deep sleep, and a total of around 2 hours of restful sleep per every 8 hours I'm lying in bed. So for me, sleep doesn't actually exist even with my eyes closed. I'm going for a sleep apnoea test soon. Hopefully a CPAP machine will actually help me get a good nights sleep

That started happening to me when I turned 50. I was a zombie. Couldn't remember how to do menial tasks at work, forgot everything. Went to the doctor when a coworker asked what the hell was wrong with me, lol, because I answered yes to a question that did not require a yes or no answer. Anyway, had a sleep study done and they told me I had sleep induced insomnia. Basically, any sleep caused my body to think I slept enough and I'd be up all night. I use a low dose sleeping pill, hydroxyzine, that helps stay me asleep most of the night.
Ten years later and I'm running into having difficulty falling asleep now, too. It's not too bad yet so maybe it's just a phase... I hope.

I've always been a very light sleeper, and am also very paranoid about elbowing my wife in the face in the middle of the night due to how she lays next to me (kinda low in the bed). So I'm kind of "awake" a lot. I also can function on little sleep, so it's a wash, really. I'm normally the last to go to bed and the first to rise. But I've found that as I get older, I can't stay in bed long anyway. One, it hurts my body to be in bed longer than six hours. Two, I feel guilty that I'm wasting time if I'm sleeping. I normally wake feeling pretty rested, and am usually up before my alarm goes off. My wife, on the other hand, loves sleep more than probably anything other than the kids and me. She can easily sleep 10-12 hours, no problem.

Marathon2021@reddit
With my CPAP? Great!
Without it? Not as good.
Generally though on my best nights, sleep onset takes about 5 minutes and don’t wake up until around 7.
On good nights I will wake up once during the night, usually somewhere right around 3am. But I fall back to sleep almost immediately.
BTW everyone, the whole “getting up at night to pee” - um, that could be a sign of sleep apnea. Sorry to be the one to say it, but it’s not always just “drank too much water” or “small bladder” or something to brush off like that. I used to get up to pee in the middle of the night easily over 3/4ths of nights. It was just “normal”, I didn’t even think much about it.
Once I got my CPAP that went away literally overnight. It was actually so sudden that it took me several weeks to notice the absence of any mid-night peeing. Now, it’s maybe 5-10 nights a year.
Get checked folks!

I started sleeping better after losing nearly 40 pounds a couple years ago. I can't sleep in silence, so I listen to music through sleep earbuds. A cooling mattress cover and 100% cotton sheets also have been a huge help. I still wake up during the night but usually don't remember.
RubyRoze@reddit
Me too. I use earbuds to listen to classic tv sitcoms all night.

Two keys to god sleep:
Don’t drink alcohol. It may help you fall asleep faster, but significantly degrades sleep quality.
Excercise. I get much more deep sleep in the nights after a hard workout.
AnUnexpectedUnicorn@reddit
I sleep like the dead once or twice a week. Otherwise, I'm lucky to get 5 hours. It doesn't help that my kid is in a first serious relationship and comes in late and excited and wants to chat, which I love and am happy to do, but yaaaaawn. Also, there is a bird that is absolutely convinced that THIS TIME, my living room window is actually a tree and not just a reflection of the trees around us, and the bird starts running into the window around 7, so that wakes me up no matter what time I fell asleep. 😴🥱
XXOO1960@reddit
Sleep…ha what’s that. I sleep in hour increments. Sleep an hour wake for 2 or 3. Finally sleep again for an hour or so. Rinse and repeat all night.

Same. It’s brutal.

BookkeeperLeading887@reddit
Strict 9 pm bed time , 4 am wake up ( for work but can’t sleep past 4 am even on weekends after 23 years of same work schedule ) - wake up a couple times , look at phone to see what time it is - usually it’s either 11:30 pm and then 2:30 Am . And fall back to sleep pretty easily but always have low level anxiety about not falling back to sleep . I’ve tried to fo myself on weekend that I can stay up to 10 pm or 10:30 pm and “sleep in “ to 5 or 6 AM but backfires every time and I’m awake at 4 AM .
MaximumJones@reddit

Easy falling asleep at 10, but there’s an annoying internal clock that wakes me at 3:30 almost every morning, hour and a half before my work alarm. Suuuucks. Little better lately when I crack a window. Sleep better when I’m freezing.
gmkrikey@reddit
After I stopped drinking, I started sleeping through the night rather than being up for an hour or two.
Alcohol in the evening usually reduces sleep quality even if seems to help you fall asleep faster.
As your body metabolizes it during the night, it fragments sleep and can trigger those middle-of-the-night wakeups. It’s also a diuretic, so drinking less (or earlier) can reduce the need to get up and pee.

When I’m running frequently and / or doing cardio in general I sleep so much better, and mood also improves. When I’m stressed and not exercising I stay up later, rage snack, and generally feel worse with less energy. For me, it all begins with exercise, sleep and diet flow from that.

Usually awake at 5:30. Can’t sleep in.
cran-mangosteen@reddit
I don't unless medicated. The sweet spot is 30mg of melatonin and 2-300mg of gabapentin and I can get 4-6 hours. The alternative is a 60mg thc gummy if I want 8 hours. A 30mg gummy will sometimes give me a solid 6 but I wake up often. The issue with the 60mg gummy comes in the following morning when I'm still too high to do anything for a few hours. If I just try to go to sleep exhausted I'll wake up in 20 minutes wide awake and not be able to go back to sleep.
Clexiekitty_2939@reddit
Have you tried trazadone? It helps me sleep. Also magnesium glycinate.
cran-mangosteen@reddit
I'm willing to try just about anything but my body develops a tolerance to anything after a while. I've been this way all my life. I used to stay up all night reading with a flashlight when I was a kid. Alcohol was the way I used to sleep, lots of alcohol, but I had to quit drinking a few years ago. 10mg of thc used to do the trick and now 60 is the minimum for 8hrs. Prescription drugs haven't worked because they make me so anxious I can't sleep at all. I managed to go to bed at 11 last night since I forgot to eat yesterday. I was up at 4.
seanh999@reddit
pretty well TBH we got a split king temperpedic and adjustable base. No motion when there is tossing and turning next to me. Go to bed 11:30pm.. fall asleep in 5 min.. using CPAP since a year and a half. Life changer!
Before CPAP I used to wake up 2 or 3 times in the night to pee.... Though something was wrong with my urinary system, got checked and all was normal/good. I was using a smartwatch that got software update and was able to detect sleep apnea so I tried it for 3 nights. It said I have "severe sleep apnea and should see a Doctor asap". Went to Doctor, did the proper medical testing and it was that, severe sleep apnea.
Now with the CPAP I don't wake up to pee, I just have 7 to 8 hours of continue sleep.
I recommend anyone having to wake up to pee in the middle of the night to check of you have apnea, as that's one of the major indicators after snoring.

I average about five hours a night, but I've slept about that much for most of my life and I'm alert and awake during the day. That and not getting hangovers are my superpower and they're both pretty great. Absent work schedules, my body prefers to run on about a 28 hour clock where I'm awake for \~24 and then sleep 4-5. I just need to win the lottery so I can let my circadian rhythm do what it wants

I put a white/pink noise video on YouTube and shut the cats out of my room. I'd rather sleep with cat snuggles, let me be clear, but they stir and make noise and step on boobs, etc. Sometimes I take 12.5mg of doxylamine (half a knock-off Unisom) and that helps too, but it also dehydrates.

48 almost 49 here. Menopause is coming. This year things really moved along. Found out my C6-C7 are almost powder which is why I keep pulling the muscle to the right of my shoulder blade that wakes me up sometimes. Also sometime last summer my hands and feet started waking me up throbbing like they were swollen...but surprisingly they are not swollen at all. Fully a passenger on the arthritis train now.
My anxiety and PTSD used to keep me awake but I finally decided to admit im an alcoholic and get help...ao thats better at least.
As much as I want to be a silly vacuous girl who doesn't pay mind to anything but the latest fashion/celeb/pinterest/trend...I cant help but stay informed and follow the vomitous decisions the current US administration makes...which also wake me up...

sebthelodge@reddit
I go to sleep around midnight every night.
If I don’t drink alcohol and don’t take magnesium glycinate, I will wake up at 3 and fall back to sleep in about 30 min. If I don’t drink and take MG I will wake up at 3 for a few minutes. If I drink and don’t take MG I will wake up at 3 and I’m up for the day.
If I exercise (hot yoga) and don’t drink, I generally sleep through the night (wake up at 6-7). If I exercise and don’t drink and take MG, I’m guaranteed to sleep through the night. If I exercise and drink with no MG, I’ll wake up at 3 but generally not a horrible time getting back to sleep. Exercise, drinks, and MG is generally ok—I may wake up at 3 but will fall back to sleep within 5-10 min.
If I drink too much (3+ drinks), I’m fucked no matter what combo of exercise and MG I ingest. Additionally, hangovers are guaranteed at anything more than 2 drinks, and now feature extreme nausea for the entire next day. Like “am I gonna puke on the subway?” nausea. I used to drink A LOT. Too much. It’s no longer physically possible (not a complaint).
I sometimes take 1 mg melatonin which has a 95% success rate at keeping me asleep but I feel groggy and depressed the next day when I do, so this is only for emergencies.
Thanks OP! I needed to write this out to see I need to do the fucking yoga every day! Which I knew…I just didn’t want to admit.

My doctor just prescribed me vitamin D because It was very low. I think all older people should have vitamin D checked because it helps with sleep, bones, inflammation Vitamin D is essential for bone health as it helps with calcium absorption, supports bone mineralization, and reduces the risk of osteoporosis. Additionally, it plays a role in regulating inflammation and can improve sleep quality by influencing melatonin production and mood. It’s only my third week so I don’t know if it’ll help me yet but it’s worth looking into for yourself.

I do the same thing. I fall asleep easily (usually). But I wake up anywhere from 1:30 to 3:00 and I can't get bac to sleep. It sucks.

Scrolling reddit at 4:16 am because I woke up an hour ago to pee and couldn't get back to sleep. This happens once or twice a week.

Its 4am and I'm on reddit.

I have sleep disorders I treat so sleep is pretty good.
I notice tho I need less sleep and less caffeine to feel decent through the day. No more naps either.
I fall asleep immediately and sleep solid at least six hours and it's enough.

Not well
Such-Comparison5636@reddit
Most of the time I don’t wake up during the night.

sleep hard for 5-6 hours then it’s back to it. But this isn’t new - a life long operation procedure

I put it to good use. 4am bike rides. Work out in home gym. Bake sourdough bread. Meal prep. Early morning walks. Its the best!
I don't lay in bed and fight it.
Minute_Plastic_350@reddit
For the most part same here usually it’s Monday morning through Friday morning. It’s wake up between 2-330 after going to bed at nine. Weekends are a lot better for me where I still go to bed around nine and wake up at 4:30-5.

it's bullshit but menopause is the culprit even though I do everything right (hrt, workout, healthy diet, healthy sleep habits etc). I do sleep hard when I do sleep though so at least there's some reprieve.

Beyond restless leg syndrome, I sleep the whole night. I’m an older X. Just turned 60!
