Or maybe they did and said “looks like tomorrows problem” but they’re right at a pilot.

They did called dispatch. Dispatch said run it

Genuinely how does that happen? I’m only 6ish months into trucking but seeing tire chunks in the road definitely puts a fear into me, what causes that?😂

I lost a super single going down a hill on northbound 75 in Tennessee. I guess the big guy just decided it was his time

I’ve had countless trailer tires explode. It just happens in hot weather. Just gotta pull over and call a mobile mechanic. Unless you’re lucky and close to a Love’s where you can limp it into their shop.

It will get worse the warmer it gets. But to answer your question there are a ton of causes, sometimes it's a combination. Tires getting hot, especially when equipment isn't maintained makes it easier for them to blow. I had a tire blow from hitting what I believe was a small piece of another tire/some other debris.

What’s best to do when that happens? Especially if you’re on an interstate

Depending on what tire it is (truck/trailer) can change immediate actions, but generally get to the side of the road/somewhere safe. If it's on a dual axle you can generally limp somewhere to get it fixed, super singles aren't advised to drive on.
Now if it's a steer tire, it's likely to be a lot more of an intense/dangerous situation. I have never dealt with this, so hopefully someone who has can add on. But generally you want to keep on the accelerator until you gain control and then guide it off to the side. Easier said than done I'm sure, but that's also why I'm super particular about my steer tires.

I've been lucky my entire career. I've only blew tires on my lift axles

Heat kills tires. Lots of things cause heat, but the main thing is low air pressure. This is why checking tires before, during and after a trip is important.

Likely just road gators. A product of retreading a tire to give it more than one life. Here’s a post on retreading. Here’s another, by a tire company, so grain of salt and all that.

Well there's your problem.
Might need a new rim too. Plus look at the belts wrapped around the axle. I am going to go out on a limb here and say they are also going to buying some air hose at least.

Shit definitely do be fucked up

Or the shop was closed so theirs nothing to do until after a 10.

Ah yeah true
