How much can you make being heavy haul? Is it worth getting into?

Are you owner op? Do you work for a company and are owner op?
How did you get into it?
I'm a company step deck driver that love's driving and hauling equipment but thinking about getting into the heavy haul side of things because it seems rewarding.
Not gonna lie, I want to make more money too.
After hauling equipment under the 80k lbs limit, steel, lumber and normal loads are boring to me now, I want more challenge too.

I've talked with heavy haul/oversize driver before... he said you need to do flatbed for a few years, drive 13/18 speed, be very very patient. He said it's very slow paced, lots of permits to deal with. The pay is great. It's a job you have to work towards over time. If it sounds like something you'd enjoy go for it... get necessary experience you need. It's not something you can just jump into tomorrow, it's something you can work towards

I've got over 2 years curtainside, moffett, flatbed, step deck and low pro step deck experience combined, unfortunately I do have an auto restriction since I got my CDL through a mega, but I've driven in all the lower 48 and all weather conditions. I feel safer hauling equipment or steel coils than I do hauling stall stacks of pipe or doing dry van.
I've done oversize before, and ran sunrise to sunset which was kind of nice actually. I followed state rules (even the weird ones), stopped at each weigh station, etc. The permits weren't a big deal for me surprisingly, I think because I actually trip plan every single route I take already.
Thanks for taking the time to respond. This makes it more realistic and attainable for me. I just need to get rid of my auto restriction and get RGN experience too.

Yeah it sounds like you're on your way to getting there! Try reaching out on trucker message boards and maybe Facebook groups of oversized/heavy haulers. You'll probably get better advice and direction than on reddit

80,001lbs isn’t heavy haul. Theres a difference between oversize/overweight and heavy haul. You need osow experience before you get into heavy haul. Company hh drivers can make $200k per year without too much effort.

Thanks for the insight
