Yes, the President Could Actually End Civilization and Nobody Could Stop It
Posted by idreamofkitty@reddit | collapse | View on Reddit | 191 comments
A nuclear launch authorized by a single, unchecked individual would trigger collapse. This is especially relevant today because the President just threatened to end Iranian civilization.
Nobody could stop him.
The US President possesses absolute "sole authority" to order a nuclear strike. The system prioritizes speed over debate. Once the President verifies their identity, the order is legally binding. Nobody—neither Congress nor the military—has the legal power to veto it.
A nuclear exchange guarantees the immediate, permanent breakdown of complex society. EMPs will instantly destroy the power grid, wiping out the internet and supply chains overnight. The resulting nuclear winter will cause global crop failures, leading to billions starving within a year. We are trusting the survival of our entire civilization to the mental stability of one human being.

dadoodlydude@reddit
Eh that’s not entirely true. Even if he says yes, people under him can say no. It takes 2 people to launch a nuke. All it takes is one of them questioning it
Mellero47@reddit
The two people turning their keys are in a silo cut off from the outside world, they don't know it's an illegal order. All they know is the order was given, and it must've been given for a reason. "Has my President gone insane and ordered nukes for no reason, or is the US under nuclear attack and this is our one chance to hit back?". In the moment, that is not a difficult question to answer. The second guessing will come after.
WartOnTrevor@reddit
What is the mechanism for actually launching if it's real? Is there a hidden switch that Stratcom only can toggle and the silo personnel only realize it's real when they hear the rumble of the rockets igniting?
Loose-Jaguar-8175@reddit
I found out recently they receive multiple orders to launch per day as well. So performing the actions to launch is just one of their daily chores, in a sense. All 100% fake obviously...so far. But every time they don't know for certain that they're fake until after.
Fox_Kurama@reddit
The real question is not them (we will assume they turn the keys), but the intermediary steps. There are probably at least two routes that the command must take to reach them. The faster of which may well skip the president (i.e. a response to what is very clearly a mass ballistic attack and you need to launch back even if important people are asleep or otherwise unable to give the go-ahead to retaliate).
The one important for the fear here is the slower one, which due to not reacting to immediate enemy nukes would, I assume, go through a variety of people who are aware of the situation before being finally relayed to the silos.
It would just be dumb to have the same nuclear pathway for a "voluntary" launch AND the emergency Mutually Assured Destruction retaliatory launches. And fortunately, there was a lot less dumb in the government and military at the time these protocols were no doubt designed and fabricated into hardware.
Melodic-Ad-6949@reddit
The silo operators get multiple orders per day to enter in codes, they never know if they are real or not until afterwards.
travelstuff@reddit
Really? So every day they think they could be setting off a nuclear weapon?
Texuk1@reddit
This is a common debate on Reddit.
If stratcom is stood up because of a first strike situation then the scenario in “house of dynamite” plays out per the way it was depicted. We’re all dead and civilisation is over here but that’s whether or not you have a madman in the office.
It’s unclear whether the president has the ability to effect a first strike for any reason the president deems fit. There are a couple of layers of security around this - the officer holding the football could withhold help but this seems unlikely. The president’s staff could stop him physically if alerted by someone in the military, famously a general had a standing order to staff to call him if Nixon started the first strike process because he would drink heavily at night.
I believe the launch code and selection has to be verified by stratcom before being the authorisation is transmitted through their systems. Although some crazy people might like the deterrent of having a red button the president can push and everything goes off for security reasons it can’t work that way. There are some interruption layers but they are thin.
The military could perform a coup or each person in the chain of command could resign until they found someone to do the mechanical process. But that person may not know how to do it and require assistance which would take time.
Each layer increases the time until leaks occur and Congress decides what to do. This might give time to stop a rouge / unlawful order.
The problem is it’s never been tested so we don’t know. And it’s better for enemies not to know.
Jwschorn@reddit
This is as accurate a take as I'm aware of as well. I'm not an expert but spent a fair amount of time having to study and drill on the admin, logistics, and mechanical process that are required around nuclear weapons. As far as bombers are concerned, the layers exist there too. We used to drill nuke exercises on the b52 all the damn time when I was in the usaf- unless the whole system surrounding tier 1 assets and PRP changed then I wouldn't be too worried.
That being said, this administration has shown it's capable of fucking with shit it shouldn't and these barriers could all be compromised, so take the info with a grain of salt (or U-235)
VanillaHuel@reddit
The person who refuses is then replaced. The system already has this backup in place.
idreamofkitty@reddit (OP)
They're drilled to take the order. You think their willingness to turn that key isn't regularly tested?

I am old (51) and remember when Bush/Cheney were pushing the Patriot Act. I remember thinking that the power they were given was a horrible idea, but that Bush was nothing more than a puppet, and Cheney didn't have enough power to scorch the earth. But, I also remember thinking "God help us if someone like Donald Fucking Trump ever gets power".
Well, we're here. Smoke 'em if you've got 'em.

Kamikaze-X@reddit
The terrorism act only allows for a 28 day hold without charge
Strong-Inflation-776@reddit

simonraynor@reddit
That's unrelated to our terror laws iirc, if a judge finds you in contempt they can just decide to hold you until they say otherwise (rather than having a max sentence like I believe is the case most other places)
Trumpton2023@reddit
That's true, and as ex police, I had to use it, however it quickly became clear that certain aspects were being abused, such as Section 44 stops, so while broadly you are quite correct, a mechanism was in place to keep it in check (that actually worked).

This is exactly what I told people before the 2024 election: that the number one concern when voting for a President should be their likelihood to worsen the chances of existential threats to humanity like nuclear war and catastrophic climate change. It’s always seemed obvious to me that Trump is a chaotic and short-sighted person, and as such is the worst possible choice in this respect. But that argument is way too logical for half of America.
geft@reddit
Good news, you don't need a nuclear strike to collapse Iranian civilization. Just destroying 10% of their power plants with conventional strikes will do. Don't worry about the humanitarian crisis though as millions die of thirst.
MiliVolt@reddit
Tehran ran out of water before the war. The drought there is extreme. I don't know why people stopped talking about this as soon as the war started. The whole thing is a humanitarian nightmare.

Dbz_god1@reddit
What does climate change have to do with it. Nuclear winter is a myth.
Wonkybonky@reddit
You realize what nuclear fallout does right?
Dbz_god1@reddit
Also we’ve detonated 1000s of nuclear weapons in the air, ground, underground, and underwater. Where’s this nuclear winter?
Wonkybonky@reddit
Fallout =/= Winter
That’s another myth. Fallout is the spreading of irradiated particles and debris… the amount of heat pollution and lasting harm that does to the environment exposed to that can be catastrophic. The things that aren’t directly visible would be things like significant ozone damage, significant uv exposure, and the worsening and continuing acidification of our oceans. I know you want to just make global warming about temperature change, but climate isn’t just temperature. It’s everything.
Dbz_god1@reddit
Is there any evidence that shows negative worldwide repercussions for the “thousands of millions of years of irradiated material in our environment “?
TenOfZero@reddit
I've seen that it's causing issues getting non radioactive metal for some medical imaging machinery, so they are having to try and scrap metal from old shipwrecks from before we started to have nuclear technology.

Wonkybonky@reddit
It’s okay, nuclear half life probably goes right out the window cus it’s not a nuclear winter
Wonkybonky@reddit
Not once have I advocated for nuclear winter this entire time…
Icy_Geologist2959@reddit
Nuclear teats occured under controlled conditions. As I understand it, a nuclear winter would be produced by the soot and other fine particles that woukd find their way into the hifh atmosphere from the huge fires a nuclear exchange would cause. This is one fundemental difference between nuclear testing and a nuclear war. The other is the timeline. In a nuclear war, the weapons all explode over a relatively short period. Nuclear testing was not like that. Weapons were exploded in a staged manner over a much more extended timeline.
Raclettegring@reddit
The nuclear winter would happen due to all the fires in the urban centers and nearby forests. Imagine everything burning at once for weeks on end.
Dbz_god1@reddit
There’s countless studies that say the nuclear winter hypothesis is dubious at best
AngusScrimm---------@reddit
"Countless studies..." No sir there are not.
Raclettegring@reddit
I don't believe in those studies.
A huge volcano eruption can trigger mini "ice ages". The burnings of thousands of cities, forests and fields across the globe after a nuclear war would have the same effect.
Icy_Geologist2959@reddit
That is my understanding, yes.
Raclettegring@reddit
It's fucking terrifying...
Icy_Geologist2959@reddit
And likely to proliferate given the invasion of formally nuclear-armed Ukraine, the undoing of NATO etc...
Raclettegring@reddit
You do understand that it's not that that would cause the nuclear winter?
Blowing up a nuke in the middle of the desert is different than blowing up a nuke in all major city centers, where everything would burn for weeks and cause soot and smoke to rise to the atmosphere.
Dbz_god1@reddit
What makes you think that dense urban centers (a requirement for the nuclear winter hypothesis) would be targeted in a war ?
Raclettegring@reddit
You can find the plans showing the targets during a nuclear war. There's no "limited exchange" targeting military targets in the event of a nuclear war between two major nuclear super powers.
Dbz_god1@reddit
There’s no evidence that shows cities are a target. Destroying cities doesn’t provide any strategic advantage in a war.
Karambamamba@reddit
You’ve got to be trolling bro
Dbz_god1@reddit
Nuclear fallout only happens if the bomb is detonated at ground level, which is not what they are meant for as an airburst is what creates the destruction. Where’s the nuclear fallout from Hiroshima? People lived there in 1947 and the city was rebuilt within a decade.
Please do some research. Carl Sagan propagated the nuclear winter myth as a way to disincentivize a global nuclear war. It was good for its time, but it’s been proven false.
trivetsandcolanders@reddit
You misread my comment. I was saying that nuclear war and catastrophic climate change are two separate existential risks
Dbz_god1@reddit
Ah I see. Much agreed.

What I don't get is how I've seen no articles connecting Trump's "A whole civilization will die tonight" with the Delphic Oracle's legendary statement to Croesus.
Lydia's king Croesus consulted the Oracle about attacking the Persia and was told he would "destroy a great empire" if he did. Taking this as encouragement, he did … which led to the downfall of Lydia.
Mr_Moogles@reddit
Just because he has the authority, all that means is that there is no legal basis to stop him. Make no mistake, there would be many people that would have to go along with those insane orders for the nukes to launch. We have a few examples in history where soldiers down the chain of command believed they "had to" launch their nuclear weapons, yet they didn't. Everyone in those positions understands the consequences, even if Trump doesn't.

Naw, he won't. Because even if he does, he destroys himself too and the remaining political and diplomatic stability remaining. So even where there are no failsafes, there actually are. And maybe someone might dispute me and say that that's missing the point: the mere fact that a president has total access to approve of such an order without failsafes is the issue at hand. Point; still, I don't see it. And even if it happens, again, it's not a good trade off.
