Where are all the public restrooms in America?
Posted by bricklegos@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 324 comments
Foreigner from Southeast Asia spending a week in America here.... where did all the public toilets go? I genuinely struggle to find one
shelwood46@reddit
We outlawed pay toilets about 50 years ago, so you probably won't see big signs for them. In clement weather, most parks and other outdoor venues will have little buildings that are restrooms. Most public places are required to have bathrooms available to the public: hotel lobbies, restaurants, stores, etc. Just ask someone who works there. Sometimes at places like gas stations they will be locked and you need to get a key from an employee.
Scrappy_The_Crow@reddit
This sounded absurd, but then I searched and found the Committee to End Pay Toilets in America.
ccagan@reddit

Good episode on this from Planet Money.
Scrappy_The_Crow@reddit
Thanks!
Darmok47@reddit
In hindsight, this was a pretty huge mistake. Just shifted the burden to private businesses, which raised a ton of other problems (discrimination, requiring a purchase, and god forbid you have to pee outside of businses hours somewhere)
Scrappy_The_Crow@reddit
Yeah, it was. This is a problem with a lot of activism: the lack of consideration of 2nd- and 3rd-order (and further) effects.
hx87@reddit
If I had more time and energy I'd be interested in starting a Committee to Restore Paid Toilets in America
Having_A_Day@reddit
I dunno. It would probably cost $20 to use a porta potty. TP in a separate vending machine!
hx87@reddit
They'd have to compete with buying a $5 coffee. Even if they didn't, it would be 100% better than not having a toilet in the first place.
CEPTIA had the same mindset as the dumbasses who wrote all those "it's not required, but if you put it in, it's required to be accessible" rules into the ADA. If you ban something annoying (pay toilets/small elevators/walkways with no lifts or ramps) without requiring a replacement, surely public demand would come up with something better instead of just giving up!
SteampunkExplorer@reddit
No idea why somebody downvoted this. We're all human, and activists make mistakes (or don't immediately foresee all the effects of their successes), too. That's just life.
SituationSad4304@reddit
Where in America are you? That’ll help us narrow it down for you
bricklegos@reddit (OP)
San Francisco
geekteam6@reddit
Here's a map of public bathrooms in SF. But to be honest, generally the easiest solution is to go into a cafe, bar, or fast food restaurant, order a drink or something, and ask for the bathroom key.
CIAMom420@reddit
Don’t overlook hotels either.
reassuring-wink@reddit
Supermarkets
Xylophelia@reddit
Grocery stores are consistently the easiest to find a public toilet in, at least in my region.
CPA_Lady@reddit
Lowe’s. They’re huge, right in front of the store and clean.
Xylophelia@reddit
Ours are in the waaaaaay back behind lumber, but yeah. I’ve definitely whipped into those parking lots and ran through the store with a 2-3 year old desperate for a toilet before.
Though OP is going to San Francisco, so do they have Lowe’s in the city center tourist parts there?
SnooChipmunks2079@reddit
I dragged ours into a Kia dealer at about that age.
They were super busy and nobody even said “hi”!
SassyGirl0202@reddit
No lol this is SF we are talking about lol
frijolita_bonita@reddit
Ha! Good point LOL
the-lovely-panda@reddit
My Lowe’s has it allllll the way in the back.
dazzleox@reddit
This is true but for tourists who tend to be in downtown areas of cities, finding a Lowes might not be easy.
I was just in Inner Harbor Baltimore for the National Aquarium and after we left, my son had a bathroom emergency and it felt like you needed a retinal scan to get a pass code to open a bathroom door anywhere within walking distance.
Auketu@reddit
YES. Lowe’s bathrooms are clutch. I went on a road trip to Washington DC a couple years ago with a friend and I remember stopping at a couple Lowe’s since their bathrooms were nice and rarely busy.

TheSnowmansIceCastle@reddit
Just a note, in some places you must pass through a security screening point and say why you're there. Have a good reason planned out.
frijolita_bonita@reddit
This is my secret hack
Darryl_Lict@reddit
I consider buying a beer the price of admission to use a bathroom. I have an idea of where some of the public bathrooms are, but so many McDonald's have no bathroom access at all.
ButtholeSurfur@reddit
Huh, in my state if you serve food you have to have a bathroom.
pawsplay36@reddit
California is infamously anti-homeless, to the extent that it hurts everyone.
symbolicshambolic@reddit
Fyi, it's not required by law in San Francisco.
Darryl_Lict@reddit
I'm pretty sure that's true in California. But there is a McDonalds just north of Market near Union Square that seems to always have the bathroom not working. I'd normally buy something off the dollar menu, but that one hasn't been open probably at least 3 times I've been there.
I notice boatloads of service stations don't have functional bathrooms.
donnacus@reddit
same here. Any establishment that serves food or drink must allow customers access to a restroom. They do not have to allow you access if you are not a customer.
ButtholeSurfur@reddit
Yeah McDonald's not letting a paying customer use the restroom would be bad news for them.
BullsOnParadeFloats@reddit
This has never been my experience, as I exclusively use McDonald's as a public bathroom
I literally stopped at one yesterday morning to poop and didn't spend a dime there
feistlab@reddit
In major cities? In manhattan they are super strict about it in my experience, in the suburbs/boonies they don't care. Downtown SF may have stricter rules.
Diligent_Gear_8179@reddit
If it's somewhere I've stopped at before to use the bathroom without buying anything (gas station, McDonalds, whatever,) I try to make a point of buying something inexpensive as kind of a 'thank you' gesture. Unless it happens to be particularly busy at the time.
romero0705@reddit
Then when you drink the beer you have to pee more. This is how Big Brewery gets you!!
Bars and coffee shops are definitely the go for me too, plus you might find a cool spot. Gas stations or grocery stores are sometimes okay but a little less nice.
Darryl_Lict@reddit
It's a vicious cycle, but I'm usually bar hopping half the time I'm in the city.
NekoArtemis@reddit
Libraries are good too. Most parks also have them.
Acceptable_Tea3608@reddit
A lot of park bathrooms are disgusting and not upkept. Also used by the homeless. When I was in L.A. last year a homeless person was sleeping on the floor of the 2 stall park ladies bathroom.
NekoArtemis@reddit
And a lot of them are fine. In my experience the park bathrooms in San Francisco are pretty reliably good and that's why I suggest them.
Acceptable_Tea3608@reddit
Well Im on the east coast and our public bathrooms in parks haven't been fine in decades.
NekoArtemis@reddit
Imagine if someone said something about where to find a bathroom in your home town based on how the bathrooms are somewhere two thousand miles away.
Acceptable_Tea3608@reddit
Well what are you getting on about? Just speak plain. I didn't say anything disgusting about the L.A. bathroom other than the homeless person was sleeping in there. That could be a dangerous. Only because they were sleeping did I cance it. Meanwhile the bathroom at the beach was quite nice. Also its perfectly fine to talk abt your experiences whether it was one time or five.
NekoArtemis@reddit
I mean in your case your experience was zero times.
feistlab@reddit
Big box stores generally have openly accessible bathrooms you can walk in and use without purchase. Also in smaller cafes/restaurants you can often just ask nicely and they will let you use it without purchasing. Also, if you have a little kid with you, you can basically always use bathrooms in businesses without a problem, and often they will even let little kids use non-public staff restrooms if it's urgent. I wish we had public toilets like elsewhere, but since we don't, private businesses tend to be more open to letting people use their raestrooms.
justdisa@reddit
Go go, San Francisco. This is fabulous. Every city needs a site like this.
Darmok47@reddit
I've found most places in SF don't make you order anything if you're well dressed, polite, and don't look like you're a homeless junkie.
rsvihla@reddit
So they discriminate against homeless junkies?
Tygrkatt@reddit
It's more like they don't want to have to deal with someone overdosing in there.
SphericalCrawfish@reddit
Having a toddler with you is a sure way to get to the bathroom. But I don't suggest borrowing one for that purpose.
pinniped90@reddit
Maybe rent one for the day?
SphericalCrawfish@reddit
Some people pay you to take them for a few hours even! Think of the possibility!
redwingsphan19@reddit
A visibly pregnant woman works too in a pinch.
JellyfishFit3871@reddit
Opposite coast, but yeah, I've opened my locked (hotel) lobby at 1am for the visibly pregnant lady whose partner was debating whether I would offer a discount on a room rate.
I played the no-nonsense old woman card.
"Dude, this is the best price you're gonna get within sixty miles, within five dollars or so. And your partner is going through A LOT at her stage of pregnancy. Hire a clean room so that you and especially she can get some rest. It's cheap, safe, and I promise you that her back hurts after all day in the truck."
frijolita_bonita@reddit
Shoot. In a couple weeks we will be in SF, bicycling in from Sausalito. I’m surprised there’s nothing near the Golden Gate Bridge!
harpers25@reddit
There are several public bathrooms in the Presidio on the SF side of the bridge. It's federal land, that list is city public bathrooms.
frijolita_bonita@reddit
Ok cool! Thanks!
FirstPersonWinner@reddit
I usually find supermarkets or retail stores to be the easiest to access since you generally don't need to buy something or have a key. In case of emergency a gas station or fast food restaurant is my go to. Just buy a value item or soda and use their restroom.
Most public restrooms around town I usually find in public parks
archseattle@reddit
Some BART stations also have restrooms, not common for other parts of the country.
HotTopicMallRat@reddit
Oh dude there is a ton! You just gotta know where to go. Looks like someone already got you the map!
brzantium@reddit
That's your problem. The homeless issue is so bad there that a lot of restrooms have been made private, pay-to-pee, or restricted in some other way. One of the last times I was there, my wife had to get a key it use the bathroom at a fast food joint, and as soon as she got the door unlocked, a bunch of methed out women popped up out of nowhere and shoved their way in.
just_enjoyinglife@reddit
Go to a Starbucks l, but a drink.
Prestigious-Comb4280@reddit
Bathrooms in cities like SF are difficult to find. I usually go a Mcdonalds but I don't remember seeing one there
mannisbaratheon97@reddit
Pretty sure you can just relieve yourself on the streets if you’re in San Francisco
SplitOpenAndMelt420@reddit
Oof. Maybe the worst city for this. I live in LA and every time I travel up there I find myself having to talk around corners to pee
sadthrow104@reddit
Aren’t there a ton of Starbucks or box stores you can go in?
SplitOpenAndMelt420@reddit
Nope! Otherwise, I wouldn't be urinating in the street
armoredbearclock@reddit
No. San Francisco is different.
NekoArtemis@reddit
From now on if anyone complains about pee on the sidewalk in SF I'm blaming you.
Agreeable-Sun368@reddit
SF has a homelessness problem which is probably why you're having more issues than you would in some other cities. A lot of our free bathrooms also aren't really walkable or in places tourists might be wandering. If I'm in a strip mall shopping I can find a decent bathroom in any box store (Home Depot has great bathrooms), but there are fewer in many more interesting and beautiful urban places. In many cities they have them in public parks, but I don't know about SF.
Shoddy-Secretary-712@reddit
I am glad I read this. I live in rural small town America. I was so confused why it was hard to find a bathroom
The city is go to several times a week has a population of 20,000
thetoerubber@reddit
this is the premium content I come here for
MaddyKet@reddit
On road trips, I pee in a lot of Target bathrooms. Sometimes Walmart.
Agreeable-Sun368@reddit
I also do this! Like I said, Home Depot is my favorite lol. But this is pretty useless for anyone who is a tourist in a major urban center and/or doesn't have a car. Many urban/small format Targets lock the bathrooms too.
SwoopKing@reddit
Thats the worst city next to NYC to find a bathroom. Almost any other city in America and youll find most establishments wont mind your using their bathroom.
Gas stations are the go to.
anneofgraygardens@reddit
go to a Starbucks, there's almost certainly one near you. You might need a key. If you're clean it won't be a problem.
Fruitopia07@reddit
Went to 2 SF Starbucks seeking restroom and they wouldn’t let me use it.
sadthrow104@reddit
I recall there is one in the northern dog patch neighborhood near the medical plaza, never locked, nice staff, always clean.
Don’t quote me 100% though this was years ago
IthurielSpear@reddit

IthurielSpear@reddit
A lot of the Starbucks in San Francisco have closed their bathrooms to the public
deshi_mi@reddit
Based on my experience visiting SF a few years ago, it's virtually anywhere.
Exact_Programmer4080@reddit
Most businesses (especially large ones like supermarkets, outlets, and malls) have public restrooms that anyone can use. Smaller businesses like restaurants and mom & pop shops may have restrooms but they are for customers only. Buy a bottle of water, pack of gum, or anything small and you'll be fine, and even in some cases some business owners will be nice enough to show you the restroom if you ask politely.
Several_Celebration@reddit
I feel like San Francisco might be harder than most places because businesses don’t want homeless non customers to use their bathrooms.
Most large stores like Target or a hotel lobby should have bathrooms though.
Lower_Neck_1432@reddit
Oh that's easy...the sidewalk in the Mission District. (that's a joke(?))
TowElectric@reddit
Oh. All the truely public ones were closed when massive numbers of homeless and criminals camped out in them.
So only in businesses or other retail/commercial spaces.
venturashe@reddit
Same here and we’re in a small town. Restrooms at the beach and the parks end up getting locked up due to misuse and damage.
silicontruffle@reddit
Lol yeah they don't exist. If there was one it'd be taken over by the homeless.
EnyaNorrow@reddit

cwcam86@reddit
The homeless just shit on the sidewalk
Heinz37_sauce@reddit
On the sidewalk, in your pants, or some combination of the two. Same place you pee.

John-Dune-Awakening@reddit
Ew, why.
myname_1s_mud@reddit
Big cities like San Francisco dont have nearly as many available as other cities. 99 percent of stores in other cities will have one available to you, as will most public spaces, but homeless drug addicts destroy them in sanfrancsco. Businesses just refuse to let people use them because its so bad, and alot of the ones in public spaces are either unusable, or have been removed because its too hard to maintain, it encourages people to set up homeless camps, and/or they've become unsafe because its a cameraless room where a drug addict can rob you for drug money, or assault you.
If thats the only city youre visiting, just know that the rest of the country isnt this bad. It sucks that for many visitors, that is what represents us. It also sucks because it was a beautiful and unique city, but the drugs have made it husk of what it used to be.
duckfruits@reddit
Ooof. One of the hardest places to find public bathrooms in the entire country. There's so many homeless there that destroy and heavily use drugs in bathrooms, that public restrooms have been closed down because they're an actual hazard and businesses don't let people, even paying customers, use their restrooms much.
JimBones31@reddit
McDonald's, the park, the beach, subway
armoredbearclock@reddit
San Francisco doesn’t have a lot partially because of the large homeless population. But also because the homeless population is used as an excuse to not maintain them (city doesn’t want to pay because they’re difficult to maintain). Business will either have one or know where the closest one is that you can use - but you typically have to buy something. Hotels usually have them but you have to pretend you’re staying there. This is very typical of SF. It’s lame. It’s not nearly as bad in other cities or smaller towns.
I’m from the area though and I’ve never not been able to find a bathroom, so it’s not that bad. It’s just, you’re right, they don’t really have public bathrooms.

you're gonna have to either pay for something in a store to access their bathrooms or wait until you get back to your hotel cus SF doesn't have free open bathrooms bc of the unhoused/drug using population
stillwatersrunfast@reddit
San Francisco has a lot of public bathrooms they just require a quarter and they’re self cleaning. Go into a bar and pretend you’re meeting someone if you are having a hard time.
iremainunvanquished1@reddit
Supermarkets, fast food joints, bars, restaurants, parks, rest stops, some gas stations.
Birdywoman4@reddit
They are everywhere that I have been. But with large populations of homeless transients they may be locked up and for paying customers due to vandalism and other problems. Some of the local businesses here will have signs on their bathrooms saying “Out of Order” but clearly in restaurants and even coffee houses they are required to have public bathrooms per city ordinance. My grandson had to walk a half-mile after school due to Starbucks and a gas station bathroom being “out of order” one time. He was waiting for me to come pick him up after school so we could go somewhere and couldn’t go back into the school building after school let out.
MadMadamMimsy@reddit

Supermarkets, Starbucks, and fast food places.
DesertWanderlust@reddit
Unfortunately, Covid and fentanyl addiction wiped out a lot of our public bathrooms. San Francisco has to be the epicenter of this and I can only imagine since I haven't been since. Plan accordingly. If you do need to use the bathroom while out, you'll almost certainly have to purchase something and be prepared for being told "no public restrooms."
HotTopicMallRat@reddit
I’m hoarding them
ApprehensivePie1195@reddit
Usually near construction sites.
pawsplay36@reddit
Most places, everywhere. In Los Angeles, California, nowhere.

Having restrooms in standalone structures is fairly common outside of the US. Like permanent port-a-potties (here’s one image as an example: https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/meaux-france-may-18-2023-automatic-2305791035). These do exist in some US cities, but aren’t as common… so my guess is that this person is looking for those kinds of structures
msivoryishort@reddit
Best bet for those would be in public parks
BooksBootsBikesBeer@reddit
Unless the public park has a history of vandalism, drug overdoses, or muggings, in which case the bathrooms might be permanently shuttered.

American who grew up in Singapore here. There really aren't many. Cities are ever increasingly hostile towards their ever growing homeless populations and have been systematically closing and locking public restrooms and businesses are progressively less friendly to people needing the bathroom.

IainwithanI@reddit
All these responses from people who’ve never been downtown in a large city.
Agreeable-Sun368@reddit
Yeah, I think that's the issue here. Most places where tourists might be walking around will not have a ton of bathrooms. Sure, you can pee in any Walmart without paying, but downtown in any city even the fast food places will have door codes.
Cinisajoy2@reddit
So buy a $1 drink.
rkb70@reddit
So you have to find another bathroom in an hour - yippee!
Agreeable-Sun368@reddit
Yes, people can do that, but this is not normal in other countries. Other countries have free public bathrooms or public bathrooms where you pay $1 to enter (and sorry, but what drink is $1 in a city? Come on). So it's not intuitive to someone traveling here that they will need to buy a drink they don't necessarily want and get a code to use a bathroom instead of just finding a public bathroom and paying $1 or whatever to use that bathroom specifically. You're assuming that because that's normal and obvious to you, it will be normal and obvious to them, but it's not, and questions like this are the point of the sub.
Cinisajoy2@reddit
Well since we don't have pay toilets in the US, I think it would be courteous to buy something.
And where to buy a $1 drink, dang near every convenience store. We even have one here that has bottled water 16 oz, 3 for $1 or 69 cents each.
Agreeable-Sun368@reddit
Where do you live? I feel like this is primarily an issue in the tourist areas of cities like LA, SF, NYC, Chicago...and in my experience convenience stores in city centers don't usually have bathrooms. Starbucks and McDonalds do, but those drinks cost more.
Now gas stations that you can drive to in suburban Dallas or whatever definitely have bathrooms and $1 water bottles, but most people aren't walking around these areas.
Cinisajoy2@reddit
Western Texas.
Agreeable-Sun368@reddit
...that explains it lol. You don't live in a big city with a lot of tourists. Of course convenience stores in Midland or Odessa or whatever sell $1 water bottles and have open bathrooms.
Cinisajoy2@reddit
No, we just have a crap ton of migrant workers. Also anymore it is one city. Though if I had left out the Murphy, I could have been talking about any town around here.
The twin counties are now up to over 350,000 people.
SassyGirl0202@reddit
California doesn’t have anything that costs $1
Agreeable-Sun368@reddit
This person lives in western Texas so their scope of reference is very, very off the mark on this question lol
DharmaCub@reddit
You can just ask the person at the counter for the code, they don't care. They just don't want people shooting up in the bathroom.
rkb70@reddit
Not always true. I've been to a McDonalds that literally made me place an order before they'd buzz me into the restroom, and that wasn't even downtown. (I'd been driving and would have greatly preferred to order after.)
Agreeable-Sun368@reddit
That's sometimes true, but it's not intuitive to someone who isn't from the US. They are not looking for a restaurant whose toilet they can use, they're just going to be looking for an actual public toilet.
ericbythebay@reddit
So use a hotel.
Agreeable-Sun368@reddit
Sure, you can do that, or at least try, but some hotels are stricter than others.
Darmok47@reddit
I tried that in a downtown SF hotel a year ago and the bathroom had a card reader for a room key. There was a bar and restaurant in the lobby, so presumbly I could have asked the bartender for a swipe card but it was crowded and I had to really pee so I went elsewhere.
Agreeable-Sun368@reddit
Yeah, a lot of places have made it very hostile to potential bathroom users, especially in the last few years. A lot of old tricks no longer work because businesses are cracking down.
Also none of this is intuitive to someone from a country with clearly marked public toilets! They will not think "oh I better go buy a Panera lemonade I don't really want for the bathroom code or sneak into a hotel lobby like I am a guest to use their bathroom," they will just look for the bathrooms and be surprised they can't find the thing they're actually looking for. I feel like some people are being very unfair to OP...this is a great question for this sub.
Darmok47@reddit
100%
Public toilet in America mostly means "restroom in a private business," whereas it means pay toilets owned and maintained by a city government elsewhere in the world.
SassyGirl0202@reddit
Let alone SF….if they’ve been to SF they would know why its hard finding a public restroom.
getElephantById@reddit
They're all in North Dakota. We moved them there in the late 1990s. If you drive a few miles outside Minot, you'll see them. Can't miss them, actually: public restrooms as far as the eye can see.

Blue lights. However they don't actually work all that well in deterring drug use, they can cause people injecting drugs intravenously to harm themselves and it just makes using the bathroom feel really surreal and fucked up.
Cinisajoy2@reddit
Well it might keep a few less high ones out.
joaovitorxc@reddit

SassyGirl0202@reddit
Whats terrible is to allow homeless to take over the entire city and ruin the little things like public restrooms. In SF you literally have to watch where you step, its disgusting.
stillwatersrunfast@reddit
Im in Portland and apparently Seattle is worse when it comes to that stuff, wowzas!
Darmok47@reddit
I think there's also a difference in terminology. America pretty much eliminated actual public restrooms (operated by city governments) and shifted the burden to private businesses.
Other countries do have restrooms operated by city governments.

Really depends on what city/neighborhood you’re in. I live in New Orleans, and in the touristy neighborhoods here you’re gonna have to either buy something from a bar/restaurant or charm somebody if you wanna pee.

The USA has many public restrooms, but not many municipal ones. That is, most are privately owned/operated, but accessible to the general public. Very few are operated by a local or state government.

True, but most parks and libraries also have them.

Those are usually in more remote areas without private businesses nearby. They don't put them along the portions of the interstate that are inside bustling cities.

I live in a small town. If I needed a restroom while I was out I would try a gas station, Walmart, the public library, the hospital, McDonalds. There are probably restrooms you could use in other buildings.
In a big city I imagine there is probably a bathroom finding map or app you could check.

Every mall, movie theater Walmart target have bathrooms…and they don’t care if you buy something. Parks usually have one but they’re likely not convenient. Most chain fast food restaurants also don’t care if you’re a customer & usually the choice when driving. Some gas stations chains are actually the preferred choice when driving. restaurants and bars all have them but usually for paying customers…you’ll get a side eye. I was delivering food during the pandemic when many places wouldn't allow drivers to use restaurant toilets. I often had to resort to peeing in very risky places like parking lots or alleys because of it. I'm a woman and this is something that bothers me immensely in such a wealthy society.
Urination in safety isn't some huge demand it's a base level need , I honestly don't judge anyone for peeing in public after what I went through in 2020.

My go-to is using the public restroom in a hotel lobby (specifically ones in urban areas like downtown San Francisco). People come and go all the time, and as long as you aren't obnoxious about wandering around, you'll probably not have any issues. Just act like you are supposed to be there.
Minimum-Attitude389@reddit

Really? In my opinion there are public restrooms everywhere in the US. I am from Germany, good luck finding ANY here lol And if you do, you have to pay to use them
Ill-Lou-Malnati@reddit
Don’t know what you mean by “public toilets “ but really any fast food joint. Technically you are supposed to buy something but nobody cares.
JJCalixto@reddit
Gas station/convenience stores. You may need to purchase something and ask for a door code or for a key attached to some random large object.
Footnotegirl1@reddit
Public libraries always have restrooms in them. That's the best place to go where there isn't at least an informal expectation that you buy something.
ComprehensiveCoat627@reddit
Unfortunately, San Francisco is horrible for this. Even the standard places that everyone is recommending (McDonald's, Starbucks, library, gas stations) you can count on everywhere except SF. Even those places don't let you use their bathrooms regularly. Last time I was there, grocery stores were still an option, as well as sit down restaurants or attractions you pay to enter, like museums. I think there's a public restroom or two in the Fisherman's Wharf area, too
Admirable-Apricot137@reddit
Nearly every single public serving business will have one. Gas stations, cafes, restaurants, bars, fast food eateries, grocery stores, department stores, book stores, malls, parks, libraries, hotel lobbies, museums, random shops, etc.
If you're looking for standalone public bathroom facilities that aren't connected to any kind of establishment, you likely won't find them. Our bathroom network is that they are all integrated into places that serve the public.

Southeast Asia has a sense of community mindset and much stronger laws and cultural taboos against drug use.
We don’t have freestanding public restrooms because in America they’d become unusably filled with shit and piss on the walls in less than a day, and drug addicts would die in them with the doors locked with regularity. Also American government loves to cut infrastructure to save money, so after one political term the budget to clean and maintain them every day would be cut and they’d get filled with piss and shit on the walls and floor and then get locked forever until someone bulldozed them. Restrooms only exist in businesses because businesses are the only ones who will reliably fund maintaining restrooms. It’s the sort of thing considered a “waste of government money” over here.

But only in the sense of being free from cost. I can’t tell you how often I would gladly pay the equivalent of Euro for a clean public bathroom in this country, but you instead you have to sneak into a business or buy something you don’t want.
happyfirefrog22-@reddit
Everywhere. Very much more available than for example Europe in terms of being free from cost. Not in the US for most places. Maybe in some but not even close to Europe. Actually it is not even close. I am sorry that those facts may offend you but that doesn’t negate the facts.

I remember waiting in a line for about 20 minutes to use a bathroom in a shopping centre in NY. It was mindblowing. And the bathrooms were vile.
pfffffttuhmm@reddit
I see elsewhere you are in SF. Because of homelessness and drug addiction issues in that area, it can be harder to find a public restroom.
Go to a Cafe and buy a drink. Ask to use a restroom.

GQSmoov@reddit
Blue is pay to play because that’s the American way. Blue cities are our richest cities BY FAR, it isn’t even close. With that wealth comes the homeless and mentally ill living on the streets, and associated strain on businesses to choose if bathrooms that are wide open to the public are more hassle than they are worth. Blue/red government has nothing to do with it.
Bussy_Party@reddit
I vote Democrat I just want public fucking restrooms not some snarky Reddit liberal lecturing me before he goes back to watching Destiny and crying about Hasan Piker hitting his feelings.
GQSmoov@reddit
You seem to be really upset that blue governments are taking away your right to a public bathroom in a private business. I don’t think I can help you. You should’ve specified to “where are all the public restrooms in san francisco”. Because the answer to the question you posted is “fucking everywhere”. The answer to the question you’re actually asking (where are the public restrooms in san Francisco) is “anywhere you want” or “nowhere”. Due to the homeless population taking over the public restrooms.
Most other places in America, you can walk into just about any convenience store, pharmacy, or gas station, grocery store, fast food restaurant, publicly owned building, hotel, etc etc and just use the bathroom. A lot of places even just have restrooms out in public.

I'm not that accustomed to public restrooms unless it's at a park or on the beach.

There are public restrooms in the free area of many BART stations, and in the Ferry Building. There's a toilet at the 4th and King caltrain station, as well as on the caltrains and in the ferries.
Otherwise we generally pee in fast food restaurants or cafes. Sometimes there's a door code but usually people are nice and will hold the door for you or tell you the code.
If you're near a public library that's open you can also pee there.

Most people are listing customer bathrooms instead of public bathrooms. Public bathrooms are found at rest areas and public parks. It can be hard to find a bathroom in many city centers.
blipsman@reddit
Restaurants, hotel lobbies, stores, public places like malls, airports
Rex_Nemorensis_@reddit
Let me introduce you to a little place we call Buc-ees.
TherianRose@reddit
Restaurants: - Fast food with drive throughs like McDonald's or Starbucks generally do not expect you to make a purchase to use the restroom. Some you'll need to ask at the register for a key or code, which is intended to prevent drug users from using the bathroom for that - Sit-down restaurants can be hit or miss. Most are understanding, especially if you mention you're a tourist - Malls/food courts typically have public restrooms you can use without buying anything
Gas stations & stores: - Gas stations/convenience stores will require you to ask for a key/code, but generally don't require a purchase. I make a point to thank the cashier/attendant on my way out if I had to speak to them to get into the bathroom - not necessary, but it's a nice gesture - The more upscale truck stops/Sheetz tend to have very clean restrooms and will not require anything for you to get into the restroom - Large retailers like Walmart and Target will likely be public. Some may do the key/code thing, but I've seen it less frequently there than gas stations - Other businesses are a toss-up. Some will have signs saying "no public restroom" which means "buy something and we might let you use it, but probably not". Smaller businesses/strip malls are mostly not worth stopping at.
Misc: - Public libraries! They are usually happy to help!! - Rest stops can be a little sketchy depending on the time of day, and cleanliness varies widely - Parks used to be great, but in the past few years I've found them increasingly closed/locked with no warning or directions to get access. I'm assuming it's also an anti-drug/anti-homeless effort so the bathrooms don't become a liability for folks trying to use them - Fire or police stations can work if you are really, truly, totally desperate. Please be careful where you park so they can still respond to emergencies!

Travel hubs (bus and train stations, travel plazas on roads) commercial areas (malls, clusters of stores), gas stations and convenience stores, grocery stores, large public parks, fast food restaurants or coffee shops (might be customers only or locked, but generally nobody will stop you). Most Americans drive, so we go to gas stations or nearby fast food chains to use their restrooms and have a quick rest, particularly along highways and in busy areas. While not legally required everywhere, these establishments are the primary, free, public-access restrooms for travelers.
Other reliable, free, public restroom options include pharmacies, big grocery stores (Walmart, target, Krogers, etc), or shopping malls.

Unless you're in a park or something, we don't have free standing public bathrooms like they do in other countries. We restrict bathroom access so many bathrooms people describe as public aren't really and can be restricted to patrons or customers. The American notion of public bathrooms is why people are acting like it's a silly question. It's not, but most of these people aren't familiar with what you mean. They exist in Europe too. Lots of businesses say bathrooms for customer use only, which isn't truly public. And stores don't have to have toilets for customers either. I can recall being allowed to use employee toilets in urgent situations as a young child. Restaurants usually have to have them for customers
Ickyptang@reddit
If you mean freestanding public restrooms, they are rare in the US, outside of some larger cities (and are even rare then). Most public restrooms in the US are inside businesses, public buildings (like libraries), and in dedicated restroom-buildings in parks and other public spaces. Sometimes a store or restaurant will require you to buy something to use the restaurant, but often you can just go in and use the restroom without a purchase. Very much depends on where you are (what business, what city, etc.)

No, those are private restrooms conditionally open to shoppers/diners. People regularly get turned away from/locked out of using these restrooms.
A truly public restroom is not in a privately owned space that limits access. The only one on your list is at the library, and even that will be open limited hours.
OP, some cities still have public restrooms and drinking stations in parks.

Just saw you're in San Francisco. That's actually probably the worst place in the US to be out and about needing a restroom. Your best bet will be to find a cafe or coffeeshop, buy a tea or something, and use theirs. Depending on which part of the city you're in, there might be a code to get in.
SennaBlanc@reddit
We don’t have public restrooms like Asia does. You can find a couple of public restrooms at like the park or something like that but it really depends what state you are visiting.
For a “public restroom”, you can go to restaurants, gas stations, malls, etc. If you end up asking for a restroom in a grocery store or a restaurant, sometimes it is expected to be a paying customer. And sometimes, depending on the state, they are locked and have codes so non paying customers or homeless people don’t abuse them.

Roadshell@reddit
The government tends not to set them up because they don't want to pay to clean them and don't want a place for homeless people to congregate and/or use drugs. Businesses also tend not to have easily accessible restrooms either because they don't want to deal with those issues either. Locals will often know some workarounds to this (know where the businesses are that do have them) but that's going to be different in every city. Your best bet is probably either a gas station or fast food place, but they will often expect you to buy something.
