It never intend for off roading, that’s always G-Wagon thing.

While not as hardcore as G Wagon, ML class from the beginning had pretty good off road chops. Remember tge scene from Lost World Jurassic Park? GLC even has some off road specific packages.
BahnMe@reddit
The ML550 had a locking diff as well.
The ML’s had some surprisingly good off-road capabilities. The later ones that shared the platform with the Grand Cherokee also could do some light off roading with the right tires.
Don’t know anything about the latest GLE.

They are fine, I’ve had my GLE off-road at places like Death Valley. The main thing is generally people are not in a hurry to go run a 100k SUV around on the playa.
But in the context of I am loading the family in it, driving to a national park, and driving past where the pavement ends it is very competent as long as you don’t drive it like a moron.
They need to bring back bouncy mode so I can bounce in traffic though.

The current gen GLE or the W166 GLE?

So I’ve been looking at Mercedes bodies for a long long time and I’m fairly confident the car in those photos is the GLE and not the GLS.
The downhill 3/4 photo is the one that really screams it. It shows the c-pillar which is unique to the GLE and more upright on the GLS.
Am I off base here or did these guys try to slide GLE stock photos for a GLS article?

This article is a mess from start to finish. Yes, that's mostly GLE pics. The GLS has the vertical star DRLs. It's in one of the pictures.
Also, starting the article with the idea that Mercedes couldn't possibly create an off-road vehicle sure is...something.
Followed by the usual PR puffery and reporting on an all expenses paid trip to a controlled environment where they could inform of us how excellent the manufacturer's new product is.

Especially when the ML/GLE started off as BoF, with a transfer case, first SUV to get ESC, & up until the current gen you could still option it with both a low-range & locking diff
I believe you still can, in select markets. Even then standard 4matic is a planetary, full-time system

Motor Trend has been just another crummy car blog for a decade now
thetasteheist@reddit
There are pics of two different cars. The wheel design in the last pic is different than the wheel in the first pic in the article. They probably just threw some default press pics up and didn’t bother to properly caption them.
Lynch31337@reddit
The premiere was for both, and IIRC they are built on the same platform.
I’m a big MB fan but many of their recent designs, these included, are not aesthetically pleasing to me. The tri-star emblem being everywhere doesn’t help either.
DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
Yup, that’s 100% a GLE.

About 10 years ago, mercedes was making every single dealership employee go to brand immersion in Alabama.
We took a gls off roading, cls63 doing donuts, and gla/cla 45 on a road course.
I still have video of one of the office ladies driving the gls with only 3 wheels on the ground.
