Is a used $4090 for $1k USD a no-brainer?

Currently have a 3080 and playing at 4k144hz. Mostly OW but occasionally titles like Cyberpunk, Oblivion Remastered etc.
My friend upgraded to a 5090 and is offering me his old TUF 4090 for $1,000 US.
I know this is an insane deal, but wanted to double check - in "ordinary times" without GPU AI/crypto craze, would this still be a good deal?
hitpopking@reddit
Give me the contact of your friend, I will buy it
Apadist@reddit
Why is everyone saying a 5080 is 1k MSRP
Msrp doesn’t matter when none are selling for Msrp
StunningPush8421@reddit
yeah the 5080 msrp was 1k which the 4090 beats out by a good 15-20 percent only about 30 percent behind the flagship 5090
RogueStatusXx@reddit
This is true and then again it isn’t. Quite a few videos show that the 5080 when overclocked is about even with the 4090 in normal gaming scenarios. It does beat the 5080 in ray tracing and has more vram but it’s not beating it by 15%+ i upgraded from a rig strix 4090 to an astral 5080 - the 4090 went in my sons rig - and i see no difference.
12amoore@reddit
This guys is from the 5080 sub Reddit lol. You will get clowned in there for saying the 4090 is better
DZCreeper@reddit
It simply is true. The 4090 is 20% faster.
https://www.techspot.com/review/2947-nvidia-geforce-rtx-5080/
You can have a situation where the system is CPU or RAM limited, but the GPU itself is capable of 20% more performance.
RogueStatusXx@reddit
It’s not https://youtu.be/G-99ziZT4M4?si=BrmfTtIicILkqBaD
senorjc@reddit
You're both correct. At stock, that 15-20% gap is a fact but an OC 5080 can close the gap a fair bit since it's a great overclocker as shown in the vid you linked. Then again, the 4090 can also be overclocked to a level no 5080 can reach...although power draw/thermals would be questionable lol. Plus the 24gb of vram is nice.
wsteelerfan7@reddit
Isn't everybody that's overclocking nowadays simply undervolting for the same power draw as stock?
MaddogBC@reddit
It takes some beefy cooling to keep the 4090 happy, plenty of folks with standard builds are hitting the ceiling for throttling. Those people will see gains by undervolting.
My system runs cool, I undervolted and clocked it down simply for longevity. Plus every 4090 owner has seen pictures of burnt connectors, I am very happy with performance.
senorjc@reddit
That depends entirely on how much of an overclock/performance gain you want, but generally, yes, especially with cards pulling so many watts nowadays undervolting is the move. My point was that generally, to see a decent performance increase with the 4090, you've got to up the power draw a fair bit (I believe +10-30% more watts for a 5-10% gain) whereas the 5080 can do it without touching power much at all.
DZCreeper@reddit
That video is clearly labelled RTX 4090 VS RTX 5080 OC.
Meaning the 4090 is running stock while the 5080 is running with 10% extra power limit, 375MHz core offset, and 2000MHz core offset.
If you overclock the 4090 the gap will grow back to 20%.

RogueStatusXx@reddit
Please run a 4090 with the same overclock. You can’t.
geminimini@reddit
That's not an upgrade 😂
RogueStatusXx@reddit
Anytime you give your kid something better is an upgrade. Until you see that joy you won’t understand.
EpicStyl@reddit
Lmao what
PerturbedMarsupial@reddit
Thats nice and all but they're referring to " i upgraded from a rog strix 4090 to an astral 5080".
tyrannictoe@reddit
Bro is a good father he gave his son the better rig 😭
MDCCCLV@reddit
the 5080 uses less power, it's a big deal when you can't game for more than 3 hours in the summer without your room boiling.
geminimini@reddit
Many 4090 owners undervolt for that reason, it's known for basically same performance while undervolted
ImYourDade@reddit
You can do the same with the 5080 and presumably ge the same benefits, still using less power.
Madgamerz22@reddit
Ooh I like how people say this. "When I overclock, I'm at the same level as the next tier card and save money!" But fail to include that the 4090 in this situation (or insert another scenario) can be overclocked. So an overclocked 4090 can be a 5090? The point is mute here is what im getting at.
Honestly though why overclock anymore when clocks are pushed to the max already. Either lower the power for more efficiency or increase it for higher sustained clocks. This for does more for little work.
Ponald-Dump@reddit
Lol going from a 4090 to a 5080 is a downgrade buddy
RogueStatusXx@reddit
My 1% lows and better stable frame rate beg to differ. 4090 owners can stay mad, i see real world results with both cards in rigs in my basement.
StunningPush8421@reddit
it is 15 percent ahead stock that isn't a question
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/geforce-rtx-5080.c4217
but you are right when overclocked the gap does close even if you overclock the 4090 just bc the rtx 5000 series ocs a bit better. I've oced a 5080 around 25 percent higher on the core which is insane.
And then of course depending on the game it can be different becasue some games prefer the rtx 5000 architecture where the 5080 can sometimes match or even beat the 4090 when both are stock.
However overall on average the 4090 is about 15 percent faster stock.
tyrannictoe@reddit
5080 can get 10% better performance with overclocking at best. Still won’t close the gap with an overclocked 4090
MDCCCLV@reddit
Until the power cable melts, I underclock my 5090 if anything.
tyrannictoe@reddit
That’s a rookie mistake. I bought the Astral so I can overclock it at 600W without worry about cable melting :)
RogueStatusXx@reddit
The OC on my rog astral 5080 isn’t minimal but it’s definitely not anywhere near the top of the range i just don’t have the patience to min max it but when playing arc raiders with my kid and comparing Riva I’m getting better 1% lows and lower thermals and the avg fps is about 7-10 higher than his.
StunningPush8421@reddit
yeah that makes sense seeing as ARC raiders is a game that favors the rtx 5000 series
the 4090 is only like 5 percent ahead stock compared to the 5080 https://imgur.com/a/yVFTBfe
Fredasa@reddit
24GB is something I'd pay another couple hundred bucks for if I had the option. I've already hit the 16GB cap, and that was without even modding.
RogueStatusXx@reddit
How in the hell are you hitting 16GB vram? I’m calling CAP
Fredasa@reddit
Stellar Blade ships with a PC-exclusive maximized setting for both character and environment textures. If you choose the latter, the game will eventually enter perpetual texture swapping. It'll happen on most mini-worlds, both open worlds, and the city hub. It does not matter how thorough and knowledgeable you are at cleaning out VRAM before starting the game.
(Frustratingly, you will not hit the cap anywhere in the demo, as it covers one of the handful of mini-worlds that don't tax VRAM enough.)
It would have been nice to have gotten better visuals out of the game than a PS5.
eliminatedalljuice@reddit
You can do it easily in VR
BeatitLikeitowesMe@reddit
Its really easy to do in some uses. Vr being one of them. Just saying. I push my 4080 super to the max frequently. Most recently with crimson desert. Ray reconstruction will hit fps hard
tyrannictoe@reddit
Even my ass. Watch the digital foundry video, the 4090 is still a good 5-10% ahead the overclocked 5080. And also, is overclocking a 5080 exclusive feature?? Can the 4090 not overclock too??
ThisIsNotSafety@reddit
30% more performance but also draws 30% more power, so on top of the insane pricing it’s also a much more expensive card on your electricity bill
TetePepeF@reddit
be for real man, it’s realistically not gonna change his electric bill by that much
ThisIsNotSafety@reddit
575-600 watts, just a little bit less than a small space heater, maybe not that much per month but it adds up quickly.
Admirable_Theme2372@reddit
I have a 4090, I never use that much lol, it's like 250 or under usually, unless heavy loads
MaddogBC@reddit
I have a wattage display and am at 152 watts right now, most of my games I'm in the 3 to 4 hundred range. Once in a blue moon I hit 600+ and I've only seen 700 once.
ThisIsNotSafety@reddit
I was talking about the 5090
jay-aay-ess-ohh-enn@reddit
You're supposed to undervolt a 4090 to get better thermal performance. You listed the max power draw which almost no one will touch.
Electrical-Note-3177@reddit
Would you take the deal???
Even if you didn't want it for 1k you could easily resell it for 140% profit
Slight_Profession_50@reddit
Thats just a douche move though.
Impossible_Run1867@reddit
So approximately 140W more at peak draw? That's $1.50 a month at 4h/day, 5 days/week.
nikilidstrom@reddit
Yes, paying $1000 for a graphics card requires no brain.
bean_fritter@reddit
Sell your 3080 for $300 and you got a 4090 for $700. No brainer.
ItalianLeprechaun@reddit
In this market, might be able to get more than $300!
Crowley120@reddit
Anyone telling you not to buy it is bonkers if that’s your boy and you trust him do it that’s the second best card in existence right now
UpstairsConnection57@reddit
Was it taken good care of?
someramblings@reddit (OP)
Would assume so, very unlikely he was mining on it or anything and he's a careful guy.
BLACK_WOLF_2025@reddit
Really good deal if you trust this person. The 4090 goes for $3,000+ USD where I live.
Several_Sweet_4298@reddit
It's a very good deal. My only personal issue with the 4090 and the 5090 is the 12 pin connector that seems to just burn for some people even when they are correctly plugged. But ignoring this issue it's a great deal and that card could hold you for a really long time
Fun_Corner_2954@reddit
Just sold my rtx 3090 FE on ebay for \~$1k so getting a 4090 at that price seems like a no brainer.
ThePoliteSavior@reddit
thats a steal take it your friend basically gifted you three grand worth of gpu performance for the price of a midrange card
Electrical-Note-3177@reddit
no $4090 is not worth $1k because it is four thousand and ninety dollars.
okay sorry for the satire, I would say yes, MSRP of 5080 is $1000 for FE and MSRP Of the RTX 4090 is $1600
and current prices for the RTX 4090 are goign for 3.5K-3.9K
You're friend is an absolute legend 🙏
Realistic-Table9398@reddit
I think you meant 3.5-3.9k for 5090 lol, 4090 is around 2300-2700, which is sad to see
Electrical-Note-3177@reddit
It's satire OP said $4090 as in four thousand ninety dollars
familyknewmyusername@reddit
I would buy a used $4090 for $1000. Nobody cares that money is used, and that's a $3090 profit!
DragonPup@reddit
The math checks out
Flope@reddit
Yes of course there are some people who would buy a used $4090 for $1000, maybe even most people, but that is not what OP is asking. They are asking if it is a "no-brainer" to take the $4090, but I think many people would have an issue with it being used and would rather have a new $1000.
familyknewmyusername@reddit
All the money you ever own is used
UncleRico95@reddit
Stop reading this and buy it
Accomplished_Emu_658@reddit
Normally i would say that it is a scam, but if it is an actual friend thats a no brainer.
VeyrLaske@reddit
I mean, even if you just compare to MSRP 5080 it's a good deal.
5080 MSRP is $1k.
4090 outperforms 5080 by about 15%.
So you're getting a solid chunk better performance for the same price.
Only thing you lose out on is the warranty, which is always the case when buying used.
RogueStatusXx@reddit
But it doesn’t outperform a 5080 by 15%. There are a ton of videos disproving this.
bruhman444555@reddit
it outperforms it by more actually
aragorn18@reddit
Can you link to one? I'd like to know more.
RogueStatusXx@reddit
https://youtu.be/G-99ziZT4M4?si=BrmfTtIicILkqBaD
aragorn18@reddit
So, if you manually overclock the 5080 and don't do the same for the 4090, the 5080 is faster than normal?
That doesn't quite seem like a fair test now does it?
Cute_Customer420@reddit
this seems like a better, more up to date test https://youtu.be/IM5IRBP1td0?si=1V8CN7zmiwNodWYU&t=21
RogueStatusXx@reddit
Good luck reaching a nominal oc with a 4090 lol. I don’t even understand your argument - it’s not fair that one gpu can’t oc anywhere near the other? Ok.
aragorn18@reddit
He didn't even try to overclock the 4090. I don't accept as fact that the 4090 can't be overclocked.
bruhman444555@reddit
absolutely
dsstrainer@reddit
For gaming, no. For local ai, yes
WizardMoose@reddit
Given that you play at 4k....yeah I'd do it. I'd keep the 3080 just in case as a backup.
DoubleQuarterPoundin@reddit
Lmao 1k for a gen old and used card? Tell bro to suck dick
someramblings@reddit (OP)
Used 4090s are $2.5k on eBay right now 😭😭
XSC@reddit
Just buy it, it's an absolute steal. They may have touched that price when the 5070 was announced and everyone panic sold. This guy is talking out of his ass.
DoubleQuarterPoundin@reddit
I wish I didn’t know that
Fuck that wth
misteryk@reddit
YES
FadedHadez@reddit
I really dont see the normal consumer being able to afford top tier gaming rigs anymore. Nvidia cards just cost way to much for a little more performance gain. Nvidia is budget cutting on the gamer gpu and focusing more on the ai corporations. And yall still fawn over those graphics cards. Alot of the people I game with either have a 5 year+ old rig or new rig with a 5 year old nvidia gpu.
SquareAmphibian7581@reddit
Yes!
Also not related to gaming, but im doing some AI development and 5090 has some compatibility issue with onyxx, that makes me disable gpu for a node of a workflow, therefor for the 5090 is slower by 20 min (as im forcing the node to be done by cpu) than the 4090.
So i would even switch it back for myself…
iiStryker@reddit
Hell yes!!
Ponald-Dump@reddit
100% get it now. It’s still the second fastest GPU on the market more than 4 years later
w1nt3rh3art3d@reddit
If it works and passes stress tests, absolutely!
nofilmincamera@reddit
It's not exactly a friend's and family discount but its a good deal.
Wait, microcenter is selling them for 1700 now? Haha.
It's a good card, I sold one after an upgrade 6 months ago for 1200 and kind of which I kept it as a second card.
MITBryceYoung@reddit
??? This thing sells for ~2k on used market atm. Youre on crack
TheLightningL0rd@reddit
I paid that for a 4080 super back In 2024. Definitely worth it
Sumeung-Gai@reddit
If you don't do it i will
Existing-Dust3123@reddit
It's almost worth a cross-continent flight to pick it up for that price
If it's actually in decent condition, and this friend isn't just "some guy", that sounds like the deal of the decade tbh
Silicon is reaching limits regardless, 4090 will be a good card to have well into the 2030s
Night_0dot0_Owl@reddit
Get it without thinking for a sec. What a deal jeez.
SynapticStatic@reddit
I would definitely take $4090 for $1000, that’s $3090 in profit
Quality_Controller@reddit
I upgraded this year from a 3080 to a 4090 and it's an absolute beast. The jump in VRAM is insane. Yeah, you don't get all the MFG available on the 50 series, but honestly, I don't think you really need it when the card is natively this powerful.
Only word of caution would be about the power connector, because moving from the 3080 to 4090 means you're about to enter the hellish world of the 16-pin 12VHPWR connector. Highly recommend getting a Wireview Pro II if your 4090 supports it as well as ensuring you use a brand new 12VHPWR direct from your PSU manufacturer or from a reputable manufacturer like CableMod (again, ensure it is designed for your card and PSU).
inyue@reddit
That's a very very good friend.
appwizcpl@reddit
would take $4090 over $1000 any day, but otherwise, yes
SlightSurround5449@reddit
Four thousand and ninety dollars for the price of one thousand is absolutely a no brainer, yes.
Zestyclose_Paint3922@reddit
No brainer at all.
Altruistic-Tie8099@reddit
Absolute no brainer
SoggyBagelBite@reddit
$4090 for $1000? Fuck ya.
Full_Vegetable_5348@reddit
yes
kapsama@reddit
Nah. $1k is a lot of money. With your luck it could die tomorrow. No warranty and you might end up losing a friend.
Significant-Muscle15@reddit
thats a steal
asha1985@reddit
Do you care about the upcoming DLSS5?
gamblodar@reddit
Yes. Even if we ignore the VRAM crazy Ai prices, the 4090 is faster than a 5080, and your getting the 4090 at the 5080's MSRP. Skip nvidia prices, which are higher for the fps you get, a 4090 gives you about a 50% fps jump over a 9070XT, which is a $699 msrp card.
kmkm2op@reddit
Msrp is 599$ but still good deal in normal times because of diminishing returns as you go past the midrange cards plus 24gb vram.
HinchaDeFenix@reddit
Si es de confianza te la esta casi que regalando (obviando que 1000usd es un dineral)
619jabroni@reddit
yes
Get_de_Coke@reddit
Yeah
motofoto@reddit
If you don’t want it I will buy it at that price.
Elitefuture@reddit
I'd buy it
Numerous-Loan-8008@reddit
In terms of performance & VRAM, a 4090 is worth maybe $2-2.1K
But since it's used, maybe $1.7-1.8K (I think they're going for a little more than that, but it's not entirely logical)
So yeah... worth it
DZCreeper@reddit
Buy it immediately if you trust this friend. A working 4090 is worth $2000+.
Left_Zebra7393@reddit
yes...
Pale-Conference-5838@reddit
well that's not a friend offer him 750.00 lol Luck friend though i wish i could run in to a 5090 founders edition
