VW Could Build New Pickup At Plant That Used To Make The ID.4

Finally some concrete US pickup plans from VW. They are going to make a direct Ridgeline competitor. The ID. Tiguan will be imported to the US instead and VW should’ve said yes to this several years ago. What are they still waiting for?
2ManyAccounts2Count@reddit
I really don't see a market for a "VW" pickup. Especially if they are still going to be pushing the Scout brand. Badge it as a "Scout" for the US market along side the upcoming EV's and pickup the nostalgia buyer already complaining about how the new Scout's don't have a gas motor. Seems like an easy branding win.
Repulsive-Club7866@reddit (OP)
Scout will be more expensive than this
2ManyAccounts2Count@reddit
Which is why I said to badge this as a scout. Not a VW. I don't know of anyone actually in the market for a VW pickup. Likewise, the ridgeline sells rather poorly overall and even Nissan had to axe the Titan. Truck buyers are rather brand sensitive.
JosieeMuse@reddit
if its just a rebadged amarok 2.0 ppl gonna riot lol
aprtur@reddit
Will laugh even more if it takes the current Amarok formula, but instead of being a reskinned Ford Ranger, it'll be the new EV Ford pickup they're taking about releasing.
slidingscrapes@reddit
That would surprise me, since VW is spending billions to set up Scout in the EV pickup space.
TheBolognaPony@reddit
The Scout is full size, Amorak is midsize. Price would also probably be hugely different too.
aprtur@reddit
This is true, but the Amarok has always been a more value focused proposition, whereas Scout will be more upmarket, and Scout also has no real preconceptions with consumers in the US market. If VW is at all unsure about the sales prospect, I could see them leverage the partnership they already have with Ford, as it'd be a financially safer move.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
Ford doesn’t have partnership with VW anymore, they now go with Renault.
If they want to bring Amarok to America, that would be their own one.
liamd99@reddit
They do. The new VW Transporter is a rebadged Ford Transit, the new VW Amarok is a rebadged Ford Ranger, and the new Transit Connect is a rebadged VW Caddy. I really don't understand what they are doing because i feel like VW buyers do not want a Transit, and Ford already has their own small van but they only sell the EV version of that here in the Netherlands.
dsonger20@reddit
I wonder if Ford would ever allow that. I'm pretty sure the Amarok is just a Ranger.
If OP is right and this is a Ridgeline competitor, I will be purchasing this. I am a VW fanboy, and want something with a bed, but don't want to get a Maverick after seeing the horrendous QC from my Dad's Powerboost F-150.
JosieeMuse@reddit
The situation is complicated by sanctions, and it remains unclear whether the price is competitive
B00marangTrotter@reddit
I want a rabbit truck! 🐇
turboash78@reddit
Oooh I hope it only comes in crew cab with a uselessly short bed! /s
MechMeister@reddit
Most Car companies really have no idea what to do anymore huh? I feel like only the Koreans and Toyota have long term planning.
BlackfinJack@reddit
Yup...to big to move. It's why they are investing in billions with rivian.
The future car is going to be like a phone. Select companies make the operating software and tech - manufacturers of today will just make the hardware and license. Rivian = windows, Tesla = apple.
SonovaVondruke@reddit
Tesla will mostly be a charging network in 10 years. Their cars are falling well behind the curve already.
flyingghost@reddit
Behind in what? Tesla still has all the others beat in value and efficiency. Other traditional automakers are a joke, charging at least 20% more for the same if not worse car.
Also, in China's highly competitive EV market, the only non Chinese brand that is selling is Tesla. That tells you how shit of a job other automakers are doing.
Dan_E26@reddit
Precisely this. Genuinely what other BEVs out there, besides maybe Hyundai/Kia's offerings and the Equinox, match a model 3/Y in value?
They are getting a bit long in the tooth, but they're still the default option for most BEV shoppers

ID.4
BlackfinJack@reddit
Kinda proving my point. Their cars are falling behind but their tech and network sure are not.
weaponR@reddit
Falling behind in what specific ways?
weaponR@reddit
I think I read this same comment 10 years ago lol. Reddit never changes.
DaBanninator@reddit
"I can't wait to buy a vw pickup when gas $5/gallon" said no one ever.
JB_UK@reddit
It’s confusing to me that most pickups aren’t hybrid already, if a pickup truck gets 15mpg real world, and is driven for 150k miles, that’s, what $40k in fuel costs, surely it’s worth a few thousand to put a hybrid engine in. Or even better a plug in hybrid system, give it a 40 mile range and that means every time you plug it in it’s like picking up $10 from the ground.
1989toy4wd@reddit
Hybrid systems add $10-15k to the cost of the already minimum $50k truck and add even more complexity. Also batteries/electric motors, wiring add weight which reduce payload making the already poor load carrying capacity of half tons in particular worse. Also most people who buy trucks don’t care about fuel economy.
I looked at the stickers on the doors and foundHummer EVs have the same load carrying ability as a Nissan versa.
Training-Expert5598@reddit
Hybrid trucks tend to not do much better in fuel economy due to their boxy design and truck bed limiting gains.
bandi53@reddit
They could! But they won’t, because Volkswagen hasn’t made a good decision in over a decade.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
Would be a rebadged Scout truck, wouldn’t it ? VW should know how GM and STLA playing truck market in NA.
shoethemaker@reddit
idk if i would call this concrete.
No_Cherry_1423@reddit
Do you think pickups just grow on trees?
MotorcycleCar@reddit
Yes

Some environmental irony.
