what do you guys do when needing to take more than a 34hr reset at a truck stop in the middle of nowhere? There's only so much youtube and masterbation I could do before I get bored as hell
Brightone13@reddit
Learn stuff bro, honestly there's so free classes and programs to learn ai, coding, using kodi, downloading audio books from audio book bay and so much free stuff the educate yourself in anything Internet related online. Learn a new language, side hustle from lap top.i could go on and on and need to do more myself, thanks for the inspiration from this group🩵!

Don’t know if I could do OTR w/o my gaming rig. OLED monitor is a game changer.

Y'all running full on desktop setups or gaming laptops? I'm thinking of going full otr(living in the truck) and I need gaming
DreamsServedSoft@reddit
I wish the steam deck existed when I trucked, would have been way more convenient than the hot laptop I used

What’s your set up looking like would love to play on monitor instead of a Roku 1080p tv

screamingriffin@reddit
It's time for a steam deck. Whem I was OTR it was a game changer.
thescartographer@reddit
Seriously cannot recommend a steam deck enough. I’m flatbed and get decent downtime waiting for places to open, and could only watch so much YouTube. Steam deck unlocked every single console from PS3 back in emulation with some emulation for switch games too
KTMman200@reddit
I'm a tow truck driver and the steam deck comes in clutch while waiting hours for the police to do their job.

Yeah my switch is good enough for me. I feel like if I brought an actual computer or a console it'd just take up too much space.

Look into an AYN Thor if you're into emulation or even PC gaming. They're expensive and it's gonna take a while for it to arrive but it's worth it.

I have books downloaded on Kindle in case I'm down in a place with no Internet. Games on my computer. A fanfic I'm writing. Fanfics I'm reading. Taking a walk because the night sky in the middle of nowhere tends to be beautiful. Audio books. Shitily translated Eastern light novels. Manga. Manwha. Laying down and doing nothing but thinking for a few hours without the constant distractions mentioned above.
You know. The basics.

copper_wing@reddit
Nah. Sleep in your truck on their lot for the rest of your reset.
Ajax_Stormwing@reddit
This whole thread is baaaad advice. Funny, but bad. When you get in that truck, you must be capable of legally driving the vehicle (hos notwithstanding) in the event of an emergency.
robexib@reddit
Naw, federal law says you only need to be sober and rested before you start your shift. Off-duty means OFF-DUTY, as in, you're not legally required to be prepared to work.
StolenRage@reddit
That's all well and good till the state police come knocking on your door and tell you to clear out of the truck stop parking lot because an LNG trailer catches fire next door. This literally happened a few years ago at the Love's in Ontario OR.
robexib@reddit
Yeah, that's entrapment. You respond to that as a Fifth Amendment violation. The police cannot tell you to commit a crime and then arrest you for committing the crime they specifically told you to commit.
fliversnaps@reddit
They can in flori-duh. Happened to a friend of mine. Maybe he had a crappy lawyer, but I don't think so.
robexib@reddit
He must've, because that's textbook entrapment, and a violation of Fifth Amendment rights. It's literally as basic bitch of an Affirmitive Defence as you can get in US legal doctrine.
Emergency_Ad1152@reddit
Wrap it up everyone, fun police is here.
Ajax_Stormwing@reddit
Yep. I'm the fun police because I hate seeing people lose their jobs over easily preventable bullshit. As funny as the joke is...my company fired a guy for having a six pack of beer on a fuel receipt, and fired another for walking a six-pack back to the truck. Even if you don't have any intentions of driving that truck, the safety department and the police will assume the absolute worst, given half the chance. You can't even sleep it off in your car, or it's a DUI. Car off, parked, keys not in the ignition...still DUI. I'm sensitive about that shit.
Emergency_Ad1152@reddit
Brother, we knowwwww..
Drinking fireball is the longest running joke in this sub lol
StolenRage@reddit
Nah. Third day blues has been around longer. It was old when fireball arrived.
Ajax_Stormwing@reddit
I apologize for missing the joke. I saw a rollover today from a drunk driver departing the roadway.

Hit up a nail salon and pamper yourself with a pedi, mani, and facial. Afterwards treat yourself to a 90 minute massage with hot rocks and medicated ointment for those aching joints.
Yeah, break away from the norm and take care of yourself. You got this 👊
Pakman____@reddit
I'm a man and I have no shame in getting a pedicure and a massage. Shit feels amazing.
My x took me with her one time. They wash and rub your feet. Use those hot stones and what not. It's completely worth it.
supernova-juice@reddit
I'm a woman and I've had one pedicure... well. None actually. She did try. But I nearly kicked her in the face and we both agreed it would be wiser to just do the mani part instead. 😂
Pakman____@reddit
That's hilarious. What made you almost kick her? Did it tickle it was it the hot stones or something else? It's weird to have some random stranger working with their face so close to your feet. But it's such a nice feeling. At least for me.
supernova-juice@reddit
I have extremely sensitive feet, and can barely stand to have anyone touch them. I thought i could handle it, but I couldn't 😂
Pakman____@reddit
Gotcha.... That kinda sucks. It's truly an amazing feeling if you can relax and let them do their thing.
But at least you didn't full on kick the person in the face haha.
supernova-juice@reddit
Maybe that's the key. I just need to be conscious about it and breathe instead of reflexively kicking 😋
thesunking93@reddit
No turning back LOL.
My wife got me pampered while on vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. That's all it took for me to say heck yeah 👍

No matter how exhausted you were, after 24 hours laying around in bed gets depressing. Relax outside. Explore the middle of nowhere, take a long walk or jog! Stretch out, follow a guided workout video Figure out how to get to food, a bar, hell you could try hitching a ride into town. Find something to stimulate your mind
fakename010690@reddit
Never been in that situation. Have had to stop for a 24 before. But any longer and ill make sure I'm home. My job also is set up in a way I can't be on the road for longer than scheduled. (Hot seat trucks) I'm in it for 7 days. Then a other guy is in it for 7 days while I get 7 days off.

I'd say start poking around for abandoned sites. If it's a small town, chances are it used to be booming and had a thriving district. I'd go light treasure hunting. Scope out some old railroad roadbed from Google Maps and find some date nails. Poke around an old homestead and see if you could find some old pics and play "6 degrees of WHO IS THIS PERSON".

WIbigdog@reddit
And what have we learned?
My suggestion? Get into reading. Either get a kindle and actually read or use audible and go audio books. A great book I'd suggest is Promise of Blood by Brian McClellan. It's industrial revolution low fantasy where magic is channeled through gunpowder. It's good shit.

.My wife and I both have gaming laptops and play world of warcraft... And I do game design in my spare time and am working on an idle game... Keeps us both entertained. Shippers and receivers don't bother me nearly as much as they used to.
the_clam_farmer@reddit
Go on Google Maps, find something interesting near by. Walk/Uber/PC there. Get a gym membership and do the same. Get a gaming laptop. Hell, get a lawn chair, find a nice spot and read a book. What do you enjoy outside of trucking? Extrapolate off that.
TyrannicalKitty@reddit
Is PC personal car?
the_clam_farmer@reddit
Personal Conveyance, it's a duty-status you have to enter on your logs. Like some have mentioned below, many companies prohibit this because people have abused it or been stupid with it (logging regular driving under PC to avoid Hours-of-Service violations), but essentially you can drive to go do what you want as long as you're not "furthering a load". Groceries, go see a movie, go to the gym... You also have to return to the place that you began PC to start your clock again for regular working hours.
As long as you can use it properly (see: legally) it's a massive benefit for those who spend long amounts of time on the road. My company finally gave me PC so now when I am waiting for a trailer to be loaded/unloaded at a shipper, I can go hit the grocery or the gym if I need to and the PC time is counted as off-duty time instead of eating up the finite amount of drive time you are alotted in a day.
TyrannicalKitty@reddit
Ooo
Thank you!
WIbigdog@reddit
To add to the other reply, it's also a fairly controversial rule in trucking and a lot of companies outright ban its use.
No_Ocelot4019@reddit
Both companies ive worked for did that... the "mega" even had splits off and the two hour pause it was a straight 14 from the second you hit on duty
Emergency_Ad1152@reddit
Personal conveyance. Using the truck for personal purposes.
Always_Shifting_4459@reddit
Perhaps you missed the keywords in original post... out in middle of nowhere. So yea getting a lawn chair grabbing a book and trying to figure out how to read would definitely help in the long run
the_clam_farmer@reddit
I saw it. Sometimes looks are deceiving. Middle of nowhere can have some cool spots if you poke around. Good hiking, fishing etc.
But yes the lawn chair was a significant game changer as far as enjoying life on the road goes. After a long drive to a customer, I'll break out the chair and stretch out my legs, have a cup of something hot and relax as I get loaded/unloaded. I even got a small folding table to go with it, I'll sit out and eat a meal and watch the sun rise or set. Sit out and watch the stars for a bit, etc etc, you get the idea.
Always_Shifting_4459@reddit
And I've been to places like out in the Permian Basin near Midland/Odessa that were literally out in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do for many an hour and lucky to even have a phone signal or internet out there too...
Or that one day with a different company refracing a location near Fritch TX. You could see Lake Meredith 2-3 miles away from where we were but could you actually go there? Nope unfortunately we couldn't even go play in the water lol. Another day fracing a location in the middle of someone's cornfield in Kansas 🤣 nothing out there not even a scarecrow to play with
And a later company hauling frac sand boxes to locations near Jal or Carlsbad NM, complete dead zones and no internet or phone signals at all

First if I know I'm going to have to do a long reset even a 34 on the road. I pick a spot that has things to do near by. That way I have options. If it one of those where you just left out in the cold. Have a TV, gaming console, gaming laptop. Will help.
I just spent the weekend outside of KC on the Missouri side. My options were a loves, in the middle of nowhere or a few miles further a Petro and TA. I chose the Petro where the was a waffle house, mcdonalds, Walmart nearby. So I had plenty options on what to do.
I also have a gaming laptop plus a large tablet for streaming.
