Do you know tv game show called Takeshi Castle? Well if i know in USA it was known as MXC?

Takeshi Castle was a cult game tv show that gain a lot of popularity outside of Japan in early 90s to early 00s.
In US it was dubbed as MXC and i heard it was quite popular in 2003. Anybody remember funny dub of this show?
01WS6@reddit
Yes, MXC was hilarious
Medical-Pace-8099@reddit (OP)
I think if i said only Takeshi Castle it wouldn’t ring a bell.
G00dSh0tJans0n@reddit
I know it by both names. Haven't seen it in years but it was always a hilarious thing to watch when sitting around drinking some beers with my friends. This was probably close to two decades ago at this point.
Ok_Driver_6895@reddit
I have the MXC DVDs and the set includes unedited episodes of Takeshi's Castle with subtitles. They're almost as much fun to watch as the MXC versions.
JinxOnU78@reddit
I would absolutely know it.
It was presented as something so absurd, I HAD to find out what it was really about. It’s honestly some of the best TV ever.
Detonation@reddit
Many people in the States would probably know it by that name too.
RelevantJackWhite@reddit
I know it was originally Takeshi's Castle, but that's just random knowledge because I was curious what MXC was made from and looked it up

Takeshi (Takeshi Kitano) who is originally a comedian, became a film director. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Takeshi_Kitano
pikkdogs@reddit
Yeah. It was very funny show. Mxc is what we called it.
Medical-Pace-8099@reddit (OP)
To think that foreign tv game show would gain so much popularity outside of Japan in 90s or early 00s was probably surprise for Japanese people
smapdiagesix@reddit
It happened with Iron Chef, too
CollectionStraight2@reddit
Takeshi's Castle was also shown in the UK, by the way. Not re-dubbed like MXC exactly, but with English commentary on the games. It was pretty satirical, but it was actually commenting on what was happening in the games!
SabresBills69@reddit
it wasn’t that super popular. sure there was a group of fans but it was not big in popularity.
Medical-Pace-8099@reddit (OP)
It was a cult show. Judging from people here commenting maybe it wasn’t massive show like for example “Who Want to be a Millionaire” but was cult show
smoot__galoot@reddit
It wasn’t Takeshi Castle, it was a comedy show that used clips from Takeshi castle but the clips were from different episodes combined together and voiceovers weren’t translations, but rather completely new, often R rated teenager humor.
SabresBills69@reddit
It was on a low level cable channel. This channel previously was a country music video station that changed format. The viewership was less than 1% of the population
mdavis360@reddit
To be clear, MXC took the video of Takeshi's Castle and then had different audio playing - it was a comedic script. Changing the names of the people, making them say silly things and having different "Themes" each episode. So it wasn't a straight up re-airing of the original show.
5YOChemist@reddit
Right, and many people who watched it had no idea what was actually going on. It was often on in my dorm lobby and there would be people watching it who were laughing at the nonsense like someone's job being applying pasties to strippers, nobody had any idea what the game actually was. It was just people falling and raunchy jokes.
Great_Chipmunk4357@reddit
It was scenes taken from Takeshi’s Castle, but they were rearranged with the voices of three American comedians. It was absolutely hilarious, and as Americans saw it, nothing like the Japanese original.
Responsible-Chest-26@reddit
Loved that show. Always a fun watch
Bluemonogi@reddit
I have seen MXC and watched the 2023 Takeshi Castle reboot.
SufficientProject273@reddit
Absolutely. I watched Takeshi's Castle as a kid (still don't know why it was on my three channel tv) and later as an adult watched MXC when it came out on Spike TV. Fond memories of me and my dad absolutely hurting ourselves laughing at the commentary from Kenny and Vic.
TsundereLoliDragon@reddit
Yes, I still quote lines from MXC all the time.

I remember MXC. I remember it being very funny, but also, looking back on it, it's very Spike TV. That's a dub that only works on the channel that aired Manswers.

MXC was amazing!
AlarmingAttention151@reddit
Never heard of it. Might check it out now though.
Medical-Pace-8099@reddit (OP)
Question are young or you never watched Spiketv in 2003?
AlarmingAttention151@reddit
I was a bit too young to be watching SpikeTV in 2003
ABelleWriter@reddit
Never heard of it
Tommy_Wisseau_burner@reddit
It’s the funny Japanese version of the American version of the Japanese ninja warrior. Absolutely hilarious
ABelleWriter@reddit
Honestly, I don't know what any of that means. I don't think I was the demographic they were looking for.
Tommy_Wisseau_burner@reddit
There’s no chance in hell you don’t know what (American) ninja warrior is.
ABelleWriter@reddit
Nope. I really don't.
Tommy_Wisseau_burner@reddit
It’s a tv show that was massive on nbc. Please don’t tell me you’ve never heard of NBC 😭
Also I lied. MXC is like the Japanese version of wipe out (also NBC). Surely you’ve heard of wipe out
ABelleWriter@reddit
I am aware that there is/was a show called wipe out.
Yes I know what NBC is, I'm not an idiot. However, I don't watch network tv, my TV doesn't have anyway of getting it (no antenna, just streaming) So unless something interests me I'm not running into it.
I'm sure I watch shit that you've never heard of.
Medical-Pace-8099@reddit (OP)
It was a cult show but not massive mainstream one
Tommy_Wisseau_burner@reddit
I don’t watch network tv either. But like both of those were massive shows on nbc. They were the “who wants to be a millionaire” of the 2010s
NSNick@reddit
It's a wacky obstacle course where people get eliminated in over-the-top physical ways, like getting rolled over by a giant "boulder", or flipping into water.
Also, the American version dubbed over all the voices in a satiric way.

I know people who were both contestants on Takeshi's Castle and watched themselves on MXC.
God, MXC was awesome. Season Three is probably the best television comedy there ever was.
WrongJohnSilver@reddit
MXC wasn't really Takeshi's Castle, though. It was a comedy show using Takeshi's Castle footage. The dubs had nothing to do with the show.
AAA515@reddit
And Power Rangers wasnt really Super Sentai.
And the dub made it funnier than the American substitute: Wipeout
___HeyGFY___@reddit
MXC is hilarious. The English dub has practically nothing to do with the actual contestants.
needsmorequeso@reddit
My spouse and I used to watch MXC when we were teenagers! I hope Captain Tennille is doing ok.

I remember both. I've seen episodes of takeshi's Castle without the mxcw. I actually like watching them, because you get the whole story. The MXC dubs are pretty funny, but sometimes I wish we would see the entire competition.
GravityTortoise@reddit
I have only heard of it.
Medical-Pace-8099@reddit (OP)
It was shown in 2003
kabekew@reddit
2003-2007, there were multiple seasons.

Calling MXC a Dub is understatement. It was basically a re-write of the original show in English complete with catch phrases for the hosts.
Cant-think-of-a-nam@reddit
Yeah mxc was hilarious and started my deep dive into japanese game shows and oh man theres alot of weird shit i found
Ksilverstar25@reddit
Omg I loved that show in college! I want to watch it again.
Maurice_Foot@reddit
I remember watching that years go.
mothertuna@reddit
I was watching this and other stuff on spike tv that I shouldn’t have been watching in elementary school
smoot__galoot@reddit
MXC used footage from Takeshi Castle, but was not at all just an english translation of it. They combined clips from multiple episodes to create their own version, and the voice over wasn’t a translation, but rather 2 stoner guys ripping off jokes. Was hilarious, but was also 2000s Spike TV so almost certainly some jokes in there that haven’t aged well.

Ok-Walk-8040@reddit
MXC was great. You can watch MXC on twitch. They have a channel that plays reruns of the show.

My friends and I used to watch this all the time stoned off our asses.
Also, its streaming on Pluto and Tubi for free.

I absolutely loved it in college, I remember dying laughing at it with my roommates. In terms of pure laugh out loud moments, it's one of the funniest shows I've ever watched.
seifd@reddit
Yeah, they actually produced a couple of pilots before the MXC dub trying to adapt the format for American audiences: King of the Mountain and Storm the Castle. However, neither got picked up for a series.
