Microsoft blasted a notice today that they would be retiring the Outlook Lite app permanently in May 2026. Our clients have been using the Outlook Mobile app for at least four years now as it's all we officially support, so what have I been missing?

A shitty stripped down version of Outlook that was designed to run on cheap-ass Android phones in developing countries.

That and a shoe horned in attempted replacement for authenticator, that ended up causing endless headaches because if you switching to phishing resistant MFA the app couldn't handle it, and users couldn't authenticate.
Entegy@reddit
Is this why I sometimes see "Outlook Mobile" as a registered Authenticator in Entra? I always thought it was the Outlook app pulling a Gmail by including some MFA bits.
ExceptionEX@reddit
yeah we generally remove that, and check the person because generally, they don't have authenticator set up correctly for their account.

That's how I found out it existed. Had a user tell me their authenticator stopped working. As you can imagine hilarity ensued.

Gmail does this too on iOS.

Thank you for commenting. Glad to know I didn't miss anything.

What are they supposed to use instead now?
Oh wait, let me guess. Outlook Copilot for Android, new, with copilot (legacy)?

Naw, clashes with Defender for Teams365 (New)

There's a lot of apps that have lite versions that just aren't available in North America / Europe. The Facebook lite comes to mind.

Didn't miss anything. It was terrible. It wasn't a viable product, not even for a Lite.
Ozwulf67@reddit
What am I missing here? Just use the new version of outlook for Android?

There were a bunch of “lite” apps years ago for developing countries. YouTube had one as well

A long time ago when data was expensive and not constantly available there were Lite versions of a lot of apps that were basically web wrappers. But now even the new Outlook itself is a web wrapper there’s no need for Lite.

Garbage all the way down.
