The archetype isn't really about the specific jacket it's more misanthropic or "weird" loner girls expressing themselves by rejecting materialism.
Baywatch, Barbie, 90210, Playboy, Melrose Place, tabloids, Victoria's Secret, heroin chic, Rikki Lake & Oprah makeovers bordering on satanic panic judgement against cool as fuck alt kids. That gen x/elder millenial era was pushing hyper feminine but conservative values super hard right on the back of the sexual revolution and free love and peace eras, which was super confusing for switched on teenagers.
Many of us were already weird kids or bullied, and resented the femininity expected and pushed on us at that pivotal point in development where what other people thought about you was supposed to be everything.
Can't be judged on what you're wearing if you don't give a shit, so we delved into our dad's wardrobe or shopped at 2nd hand and military surplus stores to find comfy clothes that didn't have a designer label or social status attached to it but also kinda made a statement that we didn't care because teenage logic lol
I'm sure there were some who were play-acting around existing characters they liked and it was just about fashion for them, but the archetype existed before the characters or specific clothing items.
Darlene Connor on Roseanne for example fits but she only wears flannel, Lydia Deetz fits and she's goth, Roberta in Now and Then fits and that's based in the 60s but aimed at millenial kids.
I haven't seen all of these in the OP but Daria's whole thing is not wanting to participate in the popularity game, she straight up rejects it and judges other kids who care. She's probably the extremely militant version who is actually misanthropic and jaded.
Then you've got Lindsay from Freaks and Geeks who at first was little miss prefect doing everything expected of her, until she got tired of the expectations, saw these other kids who didn't give a damn and wanted to try it out herself. When she first pulls her dad's jacket out she's still insecure and worried she'll be made fun of until she makes friends and embraces being an "outsider" and learns she doesn't have to perform to other people's expectations to be accepted.
Darlene Connor also has discussions with Dan in earlier episodes about this, in an episode where she's supposed to wear a dress for some party and is miserable in it Dan is worried its his fault he turned her into a "tomboy" because they watch sports and stuff together all the time. They talk about how she just not into that stuff and doesn't care about it, she'd rather be herself and be comfortable.
Yes, I've tried to live that way. And it's gotten me into shit situations in the past, but I am now with someone who is happy to love and be loved extravagantly
I do feel extraordinarily lucky there. It's been a grand adventure so far.
We went to Haworth last weekend, where the Bronte sisters were from, out on the wily, windy moors. Then I played a game of Warhammer (and I won) then we went to an Emo club night and got far too drunk. Hell of a way to spend an Easter. Although unlike Jesus, I had the good sense to remain in bed the next day
Honestly if you'd told me I'd be living like this when I was a teenager I'd have died of happiness
One was a two year relationship that was indeed amazing when I wasn’t being flagrantly cheated on. The other one used me to get to my friend, so never had the amazing part with her. But yeah, I crossed a lot off my bucket list with the first one before I even hit 20.
One of my exes of that archetype left her vintage army jacket in my dorm when she left me, I wore it every day for a couple years and was obsessed with conspiracy theories. I haven’t seen the show much but I do know Charlie is the conspiracy board meme guy.
My nickname in high school gym class was Daria, because of the scene in the opening where she waits for the volleyball to pass before half-assed sticking her arm out. Oh no, I missed. Seriously, I hated volleyball.
And then I got stuck in the boys gym class somehow, and we were doing awesome things like weight lifting, bowling, archery, etc. Full participation.
We did after a new coach decided to publicly weigh a coed class when we were in 7th grade and had us write our weights next to our names on the chalkboard.
My PE was mostly mixed boys and girls but for certain sports they separated boys and girls. Basically the sports where someone could easily get hurt by another player, we were separated, otherwise it was mixed.
We didn't for the most part, but in 8th grade I got to be in an all girls gym because we used the old gym, which only had one locker room. It was awesome, the teacher was a woman and let us pick our own curriculum.
At my HS badminton was the exclusive domain of unathletic future STEM majors that were only there because they were told it'd look good for college admissions.
In high school we did a lot of PE coed so I would just stand by the most athletic guy on my team. We had a deal that he would shove me out of the way to get to the ball because I did not want to play or pay attention. We became friends because of that deal.
You had gendered gym class? I did go to public schools, but I remember archery in junior high, and getting to the bowling unit in sophmore high school gym class was a thing to look forward to.
I also ended up doing weightlifting and wrestling in high school gym, because I got football and wrestling coaches as my gym class. I also did a line dancing class because we had a student teacher. While Achey Breaky Heart while was popular.
And yeah, all of that was better than any of the sports units.
In 1996 I wore my dad's army jacket to high school. The chemistry teacher across the hall from the class I was in scolded me for wearing that specific style of jacket "out of uniform". Apparently it was a special coat that was only to be worn over a full army uniform. The casual version of that jacket would have been okay to wear, he said. He literally was telling me to take it off, lol
I want to know which baby boomer/gen X showrunner had their heart broken by this girl in 9th grade that he kept on recreating her to the point it's become cliche.
I had an army surplus jacket in high school and tried so hard to be Daria/Darlene Connor. This actually made me remember going to army surplus stores as a kid with my dad and then with my friends in middle and high school. I miss when they actually had cool stuff.
Mine was my dad's combat utility uniform top from 1960 🥰 so it had my last name on it. I wasn't that archetype in high school, but it was a really cool accessory to go with babydoll dresses and boots.
Slightly related but I really miss Army/Navy Surplus stores that were full to the ceiling with Vietnam and Cold War gear. So much cool shit for a handful of singles.
I was SOOOOO similar to the chick in freaks and geeks. Like scary similar. All the way down to the boyfriend that looked just like Jason Segal, like seriously.
