How does it compare to Federal Personal Defense 5.56mm 64 Grain Bonded Lead Soft Point (BLSP) Ammo or Federal Personal Defense .223 Remington 62 Grain Bonded Soft Point (BSP) Ammo ?

The TCB is a trophy bonded bear claw. Slightly different design that works better on barriers but less accurate at range. The 556 version has like 20% more muzzle energy than the Speer gold dot, which only comes in 223
There’s a guy on YouTube who ballistic tested both Speer gold dot and the TCB556 and his defense ammo is now the TCB due to better ballistics. Now if only they made Speer in 5.56, but for business reasons, they purposely handicap the rounds velocity
GPAnewb@reddit
Very helpful!!!
And yes this is for self defense. Any recommendations? For 9mm home gun I usually use frangible and for EDC is use HST
tf3091@reddit
I like frontier 75gr BTHP personally. It’s $0.68 per round, has ~30% more muzzle energy than 55gr gold dot, more soft tissue damage, less over penetration, and is more accurate at long ranges. Uses hornady T2 projectiles which are used in hornady’s TAP and widely used in law enforcement.

If I remember correctly, and if im not please do correct me, that Speer makes bullets for several other companies. So Federal uses Speer bullets for their Fusion line. Atleast their 223 ones.
brianstheman@reddit
I was also looking at that Personal Defense 64gr recently
Jeters556@reddit
Why would you pick these over a heavier 77 grain or something ?
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
In the past the 77gr were hard to find in stock. Those with shorter barrels prefer 77gr while those with longer barrels may not care as much. In the past 55gr was noticeably less expensive 77gr. I bought 77gr over a year ago so don't know that current availability or price of each.
Jason1435@reddit
Don't know why this is the case. If your barrels already long, long range performance is exactly what you're built for anyways. Heavy bullets shrug off air drag and retain energy significantly better. 77 has 480 ft lbs of energy out to 500 yards, while 55 grain has 290 ft lbs. Like, 5-8" less drop, and on top of that the wind drift difference.
The only thing I can think of is it's still strong out to 200 yards and your turning cheap ass FMJ ammo into duty ammo, vs spending duty ammo prices just to push your potential maximum effectiveness past 300.
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
For short barrels the 77gr retains enough energy at longer distance (say 200 to 300 yards) to remain very effective. It is more effective than 55gr at those distances. For longer barrels both 55gr and 77gr are effective at that distance. Most officers are not designated snippers so the choice of gain weight may come down to barrel length or whatever the department decides to buy for whatever reason. The designated law enforcement snippers are likely using a different rifle platform and cartridge anyway.
Someone is buying this 55gr Speer ammo for some reason or Speer would not continue to make it.
tf3091@reddit
The people buying this stuff are primarily police departments with old rifles
Mahlegos@reddit
Ostensibly the vast majority of regular people are buying this as self defense ammo and they aren’t going to have a use case past home defense distances much less 200-300+ yards. If you’re law enforcement or are stocking for SHTF or otherwise have a use case for those distances then yeah 77gr is going to be better, but those advantages aren’t really going to apply to most people.
NeverBuyingVWAgain@reddit
77 grain is cheaper from them. Down to 12.99 I believe. Their price ranges drastically though, like day to day almost.....I bought 7 boxes I think and like 3 days later was asking for credit in price difference bc these people are worse than the stock market 🤣
kissmygame17@reddit
Twist rate or barrel length
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
Yes, I forgot that some police departments may still have very old rifles with slower twist rates so 55gr may work better for their rifles. I wonder how many may still be using barrels with 1:12 twist rates.
HowAboutNitricOxide@reddit
I thought even 1:9 twist couldn’t reliably stabilize 77gr?
xangkory@reddit
The 1:9 that I have does ok with 77gr but I do get better results with 69gr.
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
Some 1;9 barrels may be able to stabilize some rounds with 77gr projectiles and some may not. That is why I only mentioned 1:12 as I did not want to get into the 1:9 twist where the answer may be it depends.

Ordered 500 rds of S&B from Recoil a couple weeks ago. No updates for 1.5 weeks, then received a call offering to sub in a cheaper Remington alternative with no price adjustment. I denied and cancelled. Don’t see myself ordering from them again.
Recoil-Gunworks@reddit (OP)
Message me your order number and I will take care of you. That is not how we typically handle things and I will make it right.
NoWorldliness5069@reddit
I sincerely apologize and edited my post. I had a great experience ordering from your business and would not hesitate to do so again.
scottawhit@reddit
I had a recoil order 2 weeks ago show up completely fine in about 8 days. Just a counterpoint. Sucks your experience wasn’t good.
Pepe__Le__PewPew@reddit
Ive been ordering from them for years (maybe 20 orders total). Generally they ship within a few days. Had one instance where it took 2 weeks to ship.
HowAboutNitricOxide@reddit
Sounds like Velocity lol
rodaphilia@reddit
$15 to ship to AZ. Buy more than one box of 20 and its already cheaper than anything i can find locally, though.

Try something like recoilwelcomeback

Buy a box of 9mm gold dot and free shipping on whole order
NeverBuyingVWAgain@reddit
Not a bad idea to try also. I love shit like this. Getting the best deal is like a game
StayTheCourse478@reddit
Did that work? Adding a box gold dot got you free shipping?
NeverBuyingVWAgain@reddit
I actually googled it a few months back and I swear it was something just like that. I've gotten 2 free shipping total but I only use them for gold dots and was able to find the old busnell trs25 for $40 a few months back
patchesmcgrath@reddit
They also have XF556T64X for an okay price, not a historical BIN but in stock and better than what you'd find elsewhere I reckon. Nice middle ground for spicy defense ammo a step above 55gr target rounds but not quite the nickel plated speer rounds.
ExactScreen9237@reddit
I've been reading some bad reviews on those since they're contract overruns?
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
I bought some XF556T64X but from another seller. Many of the jackets had holes in the jackets usually close to the tips. Some had minor lead leakage and others more leakage. So my boxes say "for training only" because the jackets are imperfect if not defective. The ammo should still work but maybe not exactly as it would if the jackets were complete and there were no leakage of lead. For the ammo I received it was not just a contract overrun unless the buyer had loose quality standards.
I also have some of this Speer ammo in 75gr. So the Speer is in a number of loaded mags and the cheaper XF556T64X would be used for less critical purposes or for when the Speer ran out. I bought both a year or two ago before that last 7+ months of price increases.
TubeSockLover87@reddit
You have alot of knowledge. Majority of the time i read an informed post in here, your name is attached to it.
I do have a question, what do you mean by "leaking lead"?
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
I could post a photo if I can easily find the ammo in my stash but handling the ammo is the best way to understand it. I read others reviews and didn't fully understand it till I handled the ammo myself. The past tense of the word leak works better because it's not currently leaking lead. It has solidified lead on it. Think of liquid lead poured into a container with a tiny hole and a tiny drop leaks through the hole just as it cools to a solid. With some of the rounds one can use your fingernail to peel off the excess lead but then you'll notice in most cases there's no copper jacket exposed. You still see lead because there is no copper jacket material there because it's a hole or maybe a split in the jacket. A smaller number of rounds have bigger holes that make it much more obvious.
I forgot to mention before that I recall a very small number of bullets have a crease in the jacket surface near the tip but no hole.
It may seem to some that I know a lot by how long my replies are but I didn't know anything about firearms until I got into the hobby back in late 2021. I'm just trying to share what I have learned with others as a way to pay back the community.
TubeSockLover87@reddit
Thats very strange. When i initially read your comment i imagined exactly what you describe.
ExactScreen9237@reddit
Good info thanks. Going to do wait for some better quality HD ammo deals
Old_MI_Runner@reddit
I am not a hunter but if were I think the XF556T64X would be okay. For HD ammo one just needs a little for testing a maybe a few magazines to take care of 99% of the situations so it does not make much sense trying to save a little by buying XF556T64X rather than better quality BSP ammo. If you are buying for SHTF and actually think you and your loved ones will survive more than a few gunfights then buy XF556T64X so you can stack it deeper.
patchesmcgrath@reddit
I've seen some of the comments you're referring to, I believe if they're either contract over runs or factory seconds it might be luck of the draw. From recoil I've gotten 24 head stamped 556 that is sealed both at the primer and the crimp and looks immaculate and 23 head stamped 223 that is only sealed at the primer and looks beat to shit. I also have 23 head stamped 556 from other vendors that only has primer sealing and looks as beat up as the aforementioned 223.
So I guess whoever ordered from federal in 24 had higher standards than 23 and 25 orders, but it's all reliably shot for me and I have not experienced any leaking lead in the cases I've gotten.
cyclorphan@reddit
I haven't bought these but I picked up some 124-grain 9mm +P (roughly NATO spec only notably better made) a few weeks ago and delivery was pretty timely. So my experience, unlike some others here, was just fine.
