How to study for instrument?

Just finishing up my ppl, checkride flight was pushed back due to weather again 🙄. But in the meantime I was trying to get a head start on instrument. Starting from pretty much 0 I have Sheppard air but I’m winding if it would be a good idea to do some other studying before jumping into it. I understand it’s just memorizing for the written. What ground schools did everyone use for IR or how did you guys study for it.

Look at the CPL. You’ll find it much more relevant to your PPL ACS.

Don’t study instrument until you finish private. A lot of info that you shouldn’t bring up in a PPL checkride will show up and if you confuse anything you could shoot yourself in the foot.

Bad idea. I turn down students at my IR ground school lessons that are waiting for PPL checkride as the material is far too different. Whenever I’ve had people start IR early they always end up struggling.
Get your PPL done first. The IR ain’t going anywhere.

This seems to be the general consensus and I do understand and the only reason I ask is because I’ve done the oral part of the checkride and am only waiting on the flight part so I didn’t think there was too much of a risk with overlapping topics.

I get the want to make some progress while you’re waiting, but it really is that different. Chair fly all your procedures and really make sure you’re thinking like a VFR pilot because it’s all different at instrument.

Dedicate 100% of your efforts pre checkride to your PPL. As soon as you have the paper in hand, dive right ur into Sheppard air and knock out the written. Then begins studying instrument ground

If you want to get ahead on instrument before your PPL's done, the best thing you can do, assuming part 61, is get an endorsement to go do some XCs and rack up that PIC XC time.

I’d say put full force into passing the checkride with flying colors before worrying about instrument content…it’s an entirely different kind of flying, altogether!

It’s an entirely different kind of flying… but yeah I’ve already passed the oral very easily only missed one question. I’m just waiting on the actual flight part and have about 2 more weeks until the reschedule date and wanted to see if I could do anything to help with IR since ppl took me WAY longer then anticipated.

Chair fly the maneuvers and emergencies!
RiverFrogs@reddit
For when you do pass ppl and start working on instrument, I’m assuming you’re using a garmin gps, download the garmin gtn trainer app. Was really beneficial for me while chair flying

There are a bunch of publications from the FAA you can get for free. They're actually where most of the knowledge test material originates:
Instrument Flying Handbook

Instrument Procedures Handbook

Aviation Weather Handbook

Nope that’s a bad idea. Focus on PPL before you even touch anything IR related.
