Mangakas are incapable of making good endings

Almost every anime/manga is like this because the creative process is just "whoa here's a cool idea" that's ultimately good for maybe one episode. Then, they run out of material and default to anime tropes.
BlackAxemRanger@reddit
This genuinely feels true. Or they rush the ending like Sword Art online. You have interesting beginnings like Monster and Goblin Slayer, but then they just shapeshift into generic animes with incredibly disappointing endings
FirstBeacon@reddit
With Goblin Slayer is really good example of a good idea with a promising start, and then fails after that.
BlackAxemRanger@reddit
Honestly I think it fails for no reason other than "ok time to do all the generic stuff that people like in other stuff now that we've hooked them with the first episode" and it's just weird how all these girls like goblin Slayer despite being essentially super autistic and never taking his helmet off
JustChillin3456@reddit
Which is why the best anime/ manga has a filter to keep normied out by including elements of incest/ rape/ child murder
Read fire punch to experience kino 🤜🔥
StobbstheTiger@reddit
This is unironically true sometimes. I would recommend Made in Abyss to people IRL if they just removed maybe one or two sus scenes.
AwkwardZac@reddit
There's plenty with good endings, but the author needs to have some idea of an ending before they get there. Naruto, DBZ, Gurren Lagann, most series of Gundam, Death Note, Jagaaaaaaan, Gantz, etc. There's probably more I haven't finished.
idkanyusernameshelp@reddit
The entire system in Japan of how manga is serialised and released bit by bit before getting adapted to anime just isn't that conducive for good endings to these stories. They end up optimising themselves for weekly engagement and there's no pre planned endpoint. Everyone knows Sheuisha for example pressures their mangakas to extend series if they're really popular and make changes to the story based on character popularity polls. If a manga isn't doing well enough serializers will just tell the mangaka to can the story in the next few chapters.
absolutiongap53@reddit
That's why Berserk is undefeated. Author dies before he could fuck up the ending.
distortionisgod@reddit
Here's hoping that guy finishing it doesn't fuck it up lol
BilleyBong@reddit
Who's finishing it? Would it be considered canon like how Frank Herbert's son's Dune books aren't respected?
TheBoyWqnder@reddit
It's being finished by Mori Kouji and Studio Gaga, the former was a close friend and direct assistant to Miura. He's one of very few people
684beach@reddit
Can speak of the noticeable differences?
WholeLottaBees@reddit
His art style is not an exact 1 to 1 of Muiras. Sometimes characters will look a bit different and the general aesthetic can feel slightly changed but it’s not bad, the main issue people have is the shading. Muiras drawings were very dark, lots of heavy black, Mori’s drawings are quite light, not nearly as heavily shaded. Once again not bad looking, just a bit different. Mori has also stated he doesn’t plan on expanding anything past what he was told by Muira, some parts may feel short an maybe unfinished, but that’s because Muira only told him so much about some parts, and he wants to stay as true to Muiras vision as he can. He does know the end and believes he can reach it, but has reminded everyone he isn’t Muira, and he can only do the best he was told by his friend.
Sumrise@reddit
Not like anyone can ask more of him, it's a best case scenario considering Miura death. Hope he'll manage to care about his own health.
bonesNrice@reddit
His assistants never stopped releasing chapters. I’m guessing it was completely storyboarded before he died
drdicerchio@reddit
He drops a chapter a month, it’s not going to end
Dagonir@reddit
I would sacrifice my first born for "a chapter a month", last chapter of Berserk came out 7 months ago T_T

Muira's friend and fellow mangaka Kouji Mori took up the story because apparently Muira has privately shared the rest of it with him. In addition he left a lot of notes and character designs and Muira's team of assistants and apprentices that worked on Berserk are working with Mori to help him finish the story. Mori has said he's only going to write the things that Muira told him about and he won't do much to flush things out or add his own ideas, he just wants to finish his friend's story because he was the only one Muira told and feels like it's his responsibility.
neronsfwk@reddit
What's funny is that:
"Some aspects of Guts (personality and design) were partially inspired by Miura's high school friend and later fellow manga artist Kouji Mori, by Mad Max, and by Rutger Hauer's performances in Flesh and Blood, Blade Runner, The Hitcher and The Blood of Heroes." per wiki of Guts
Irony is not wasted here.
Forminloid@reddit
It's getting released by his assistants, he gave them and outline of the story and they have said multiple times that they want to honor Miura with their adaptation the absolute best. The chapters since have been a little divisive in the community, but it's mostly well received. For what it's worth i think they'll do a good job with it.
abattlescar@reddit
An entire team built around his assistants, and most importantly, his closest friend and fellow mangaka, Kouji Mori, who Miura allegedly told the entire remainder of the story to.
Wiggie49@reddit
His close friend Kouji Mori (author of Holyland) took up the torch and hopefully was told by Miura what he envisioned.

FrozenFern@reddit
That’s why it stopped with a huge cliffhanger?? I thought it was cancelled all these years
Sangwiny@reddit
It's been quite a long time since I've read Berserk, but wasn't the latter part already degrading? I remember that those in-between-hiatus releases didn't even really feel worth the wait towards the end.
abattlescar@reddit
It's controversial, but I don't personally really like anything after the Golden Age arc. I felt like there was a total tonal shift. Most people seem to not mind it, but to me it felt like it switched from a character-driven fantasy with political intrigue, romance, and strong themes to "man too angry to die" Dark Souls challenge run.
Even beyond that, the later chapters got pretty drawn out. The story effectively stalled for 9 years as the "boat arc" got underway. Surrounding that, the manga was introducing a lot of characters and settings which may lead to great payoffs, but so far they just feel like unnecessary distractions.
On the other hand, what kept the publishing times long was Miura absolutely cooked drawing every single panel. The art got better with every single release.
distortionisgod@reddit
It picks back up but there was a significant portion of time where the plot kind of hangs in the air cause most of the main characters are on a boat...lol. I imagine waiting long stretches of time in between those were pretty shitty.
I don't know if Miuras health had anything to do with the big waits between chapters but I imagine it did.
Hornet_41@reddit
Is that case so is getter robo. Ken ishikawa died before Arc was finished

Well tbh it’s not the point of MHA and also their relationship is never rlly built like that. There’s a reason deku is shipped with Mr.boom boom pants so much. It’s because they have actual shared development and growth unlike ochako

Because this is the same thing as some OF girls never actually showing the goods. Once the cats out of the bag the show is over. I read a few manga in the day that I thought would go somewhere and it was literal years of the same shit before the MC finally got to touch her hand or some shit.

abattlescar@reddit
The ending pissed me off because they showed that he still had a lil' bit of power left, but then he lost it. Then they gave him a super suit that effectively made him as powerful as he'd ever desire. Why couldn't he have just restored one-for-all at that point? Stupid.
untakenu@reddit
I only heard about the manga being shit. Was it the same ending? (I vaguely remember he loses his powers and gets cucked)
MonsutaReipu@reddit
yeah. best part about the ending (or near it) was bakugo having a really badass moment, but deku's final hero moment felt underwhelming by comparison, then he loses his powers and doesn't get with the girl.
I wouldn't even care about him losing his powers because I get how the story sort of builds up to that and it's part of its main message / themes, but i'd rather have seen him end up with his love interest that was also building up throughout the entirety of the show to settle down and retire and be happy. without that, the story just didn't feel like it had any real conclusion. He lost his powers BUT he gained something. Instead he just lost his powers and gained nothing.
YoungDiscord@reddit
Lookibg at you, urusei yatsura
Ok_Addendum2980@reddit
Do they ever get married at the end of the show? It is confirmed they do get married in that one doors episode but does it show that at the end of the series?
YoungDiscord@reddit
No, they never do
Keep in mind it came out in the 80s where maintaining the status quo was everything in series.
Its a shame too, I wished to have seen them together.
HiTekLoLyfe@reddit
I get what you’re saying but I think most decent writers know the “Will they won’t they” isn’t the end of it. You can have them get together and still have a lot of interpersonal relationship drama and stress. Eve and Mark in Invincible are teased from the beginning, get together relatively early on, and the drama after that comes from events like moving in together, pregnancy, etc. Them getting together doesn’t necessarily mean the show is over.
ArchmageIlmryn@reddit
Yeah, the problem is that a lot of writers are allergic to actually portraying a relationship rather than all the faffing around of two characters who are obviously destined for one but can't quite get there. TBH I think that also ties into a lot of problems people (and young men particularly) have with relationships, it's portrayed as "hard to get but once you have one you're set for your happily ever after" rather than as realistic relationships in media.
shadowsdie10000times@reddit
Kaguya sama will forever have my heart for actually exploring their relationship after the grand confession.
TheBlueEmerald1@reddit
Tell that to 99% of writers.
HiTekLoLyfe@reddit
You’re not wrong lol. I would imagine some writers are probably timid of putting popular characters together because the version of them in the story might not fit the idealized version fans have in their head. Some of the shipper people take that shit way too seriously.
Stephenrudolf@reddit
Sure, but the show is literally over. And while that makes sense for a romance driven show, or one that heavily features romance as a main component(dandadan)... MHA was classic shonen. Ochaco and deku could have easily gotten together at some point and it wouldn't have changed much, wxcept giving them maybe a bit more to fight for.
aboredmutt@reddit
You want one with ZERO "will they, won't they"? take a look at "the invisible man and his soon to be wife" it's so good,

TheCreepWhoCrept@reddit
Gotta go to the One Piece fandom.
They’re in the midst what’s effectively a mass parody of powerscaling. They call it “Agenda Piece”, where they make shit up and use memes to downscale or upscale random characters against each other.
Some people take it seriously, but it’s mostly just absurd fun. Great change of pace from the rest of the anime community!
Vetharest@reddit
If you base your entire personality in one of the manga-oriented subs to be entirely about that one manga, and post nothing but memes straight from the manga panels for weeks, you too can make a sizable fandom for your favorite.
ver_bene@reddit
This site has become so insufferable. Bots recycle the same points over and over or people repost brain dead tweets to argue about
TheCreepWhoCrept@reddit
In their defense, Horikoshi put this subplot in the show of his own free will.
All the other ships are delusional projectionist, but this one was objectively part of the story from the beginning.
It’s fair to criticize it for being as poorly written and cliche as it is.

You don’t have to show him busting in her to show they’re in a relationship broski lol just something as simple as them leaving the same house at the same time to go to work literally does the job.
Flaccid-Fran@reddit
Was it a requirement that they end up together?
The_Meemeli@reddit
If the story clearly sets up them being into one another, then there are a lot more interesting and compelling storylines/scenes that could come out of that, other than just having them occasionally blush about each other for 150+ episodes.
Flaccid-Fran@reddit
I liked the ending of mha because the secondary messaging was alot more potent the way they chose to write it. It took one of the largest incel fandoms and faced them with the reality "just because a girl may have liked you at some point doesn't mean she owes you anything at all"
But "guy ends up with girl" would have been SOOOO interesting please share all of your original ideas Mr. Kubrick. Go watch a James Bond movie if you want cliches.
The_Meemeli@reddit
Now this does sound actually interesting, why didn't you open with this instead of boiling down romance payoff content in stories to "sex teasing"? :D
Flaccid-Fran@reddit
But aren't you the one who said that blushing isn't enough and that you wanted to see more (im taking some liberties with the phrasing but this is in essence what you said). Or did i imagine something? Because that language directed at two underage characters is quite reprehensible. I honestly dont understand the logic behind this "ugh stop teasing me i wanna see a relationship happen" followed by "how dare you call it teasing" like do you not hear what youre saying?
Im glad the writers kept those two an arms length apart anything more would have ended up as screenshots in y'all's spank banks. Really detestable fandom.

The reason shounen have “mixed” endings is due to the very nature of the medium to begin with. “Normal authors” basically have unlimited time to sit there and flesh out a book/story from start to finish.
Most mangakas don’t have the endings/stories completely fleshed out when they start. They have general story points they want to hit with an editor critiquing along the way. Then you add in the hard weekly deadlines, which often leads to health concerns due to work load. Mix all this together and, no matter how long the story physically is, the endings always feel rushed and not thought out. They’re really set up for failure.
MaximumPayne7@reddit

Kohei had a small panel for them after the manga ends.
I think it's very obvious he wants to avoid official closure on romance in this show.
One reason might be most shonen mangaka suck at depicting romance plot. Although in this case I think Kohei does better than most.
The other reason is probably the major reason... Kohei got death threats before about how he not officially ships Bakugo and Izuku lmao.

Its not that they're incapable of writing good endings its just by the time the series is ending the mangaka is very burnt out on the series and just writes whatever ending. You can see this in various manga such as Yu Yu Hakusho where Togashi actively hated writing it but was forced to keep going
Basically I'm just saying its disappointing when manga get terrible endings, just don't blame the mangaka, blame the higher ups who push them to the point of burnout
