Volodymyr Zelenskyy calls on UK to rejoin the EU for sake of European security.

United we stand. Divided we fall.
Not just for security. Economically as well and as a global trade currency the UK and the EU would both benefit immensely. Yes there are tradeoffs. But the fact voices against are so loud should itself tell you something. Foreign influences know a united Europe is a danger and they’re astroturfing, just like they did with Brexit.

Not going to happen. Atleast not in our lifetime. And if for some odd reason the stars do align, they'll have no more soft/hard power like they used to. The UK, along with France and Germany, essentially ran the EU. The UK right wing press always presented it as the UK being a junior member, which was patently false. Pretty much nothing happened in the EU without the UK's agreement.

I agree with you that the UK will never again have the huge clout in the EU that they did before they left.
But I expect their application to rejoin to come much sooner than not in our lifetime.
I quite like Finland's President Stubb's take on it. He said something like "7 years to fully leave, 7 years to realise it's a terrible idea, and 7 years to rejoin."
Edit: apologies if this posts twice, I didn't have a flair the first time and my comment was auto-deleted.

Except we're still partners. Yes there's a lot more faff now and idiocy compared to when the UK was part of EU.
But there's also a lot of other internal issues, that has nothing to do with foreign influence mind you, issues that quite a lot of EU countries struggle with. Whether it's immigration, general monetary struggles, production, education, farmers. The UK didn't just leave on a whim and quite a lot of European countries did or are considering the same.
As much as our politicians sometimes act like we're not, but we're a Union of separate countries. Not the United States of Europe.
We can, have and will, function independently and still have most of the same agreements and benefits. There's ofc downsides too, a lot more paperwork and trading/shipping expenses. But that's something to work on.

The downside to individual countries working together (as opposed to a federation) is severe weakness in all global affairs, diplomatic and militarily, especially with global entities like putin and trump that do not respect norms, morals, agreements, etc that smaller countries otherwise used to shield them.

Agreed. Just wants to drag the rest of us into war. Life's difficult enough as is, turning into a war economy is the last thing Western Europe needs.
