How common is it in your area to take today off for Coachella?

Here it's pretty common to see a couple coworkers take time off for Coachella or stagecoach
Folksma@reddit
Really disappointing you guys can't behave yourself
Permanenceisall@reddit
When I worked a fake email job in San Francisco it was extremely common amongst my coworkers
backupsjm@reddit
When you worked a what?
Permanenceisall@reddit
A fake email job, like the ones described in the Bullshit Jobs by David Graeber. A job that genuinely doesn’t need to exist and doesn’t really benefit the economy or the world in any way, just send emails and run reports or generate lists and meet in teams and then do breakouts. I’m not complaining though, the money was great.
shadowmib@reddit
People around here barely know what Coachella is. I believe it's some kind of concert or festival or something out in California?
johnqadamsin28@reddit (OP)
Wait really? It's pretty well known Sabrina Carpenter was there
Prestigious-Comb4280@reddit
Who?
Prestigious-Comb4280@reddit
Does your company let you take off work for a concert? My company would just fire me.
sneezhousing@reddit
You have PTO you can take it off for whatever you want. I don't even tell my company why I'm taking a day off. I just put my request in the computer end of discussion
Prestigious-Comb4280@reddit
We have vacation that we bid for base on how much vacation time we have earned. We bid in January for vacation May25 thru April 26. If you have a zillion years of seniority you might get a vacation in the summer or Christmas or Thanksgiving. We don't get PTO. We also don't get the extra vacation that people in California get either without having to explain to our company why we need off.
sneezhousing@reddit
So family member is having a wedding in July you can't just request a few days off you're regulated to only your two weeks in November? You need a new job
sneezhousing@reddit
I'm in ohio. Worked many jobs never had ro explain why I need or want time off. I just this week requested a Friday in May off. No other reason than I want to take it off. I took a week back in Feb. The only time it's competitive is Christmas. Only half the team can be off at a time. It's a combination of who request first and seniority. So if you had Christmas week off last year you probably won't get it this year.
Rest of the year just request time off
Your job isn't typical from my experience. Even when I worked retail I never had ro explain why I wanted time off. I just requested days. They approved or denied. Although I've rarely had days denied.
cherry_monkey@reddit
That just sounds like a shitty work environment. There are better jobs available
anneofgraygardens@reddit
How is it your company's business what you're taking time off for?
That said, I've never heard anyone say they were going to Coachella, lol.
Prestigious-Comb4280@reddit
My company keeps control of what we take off for and truly only approved FMLA without documentation of some kind.
anneofgraygardens@reddit
I hope you're joking. If not, that's fucked up.
Overall_Occasion_175@reddit
Welcome to reality for most of America.
clearliquidclearjar@reddit
I've had plenty of jobs that didn't offer any PTO at all, but among jobs that did offer PTO no one was micromanaging what I used it for. That's weird and fucked up.
Prestigious-Comb4280@reddit
PTO and vacation are different. I have vacation and since I have worked for the company for 26 years I get 2 weeks in November this year and 2 weeks in April next year.
sneezhousing@reddit
I've had both jobs with vacation and with PTO and never had to explain why or limited to certain times when taking time off
clearliquidclearjar@reddit
Are you not paid for your vacation time?
anneofgraygardens@reddit
Who has bosses telling them why they can and can't take time off? Your PTO is your business.
Prestigious-Comb4280@reddit
I don't get PTO. I get vacation.
MyUsername2459@reddit
Most of America can at least get time off work upon request.
How much time they get off, how far in advance they have to request it, and if it's paid or unpaid might be variables. . .but saying people absolutely can't get any time off work at all is NOT "most of America".
wcpm88@reddit
Where do you work?
Prestigious-Comb4280@reddit
I'm also not supposed to comment on social media. We get fired for that also. Why was I downvoted? I don't control how my company works. It's not uncommon for employers in the United States to dislike employees taking off.
clearliquidclearjar@reddit
This is the day you realize your employer is horrible.
QnsConcrete@reddit
Your company doesn’t let you take vacation days?
Prestigious-Comb4280@reddit
Yes if my seniority could hold the vacation that includes Coachella. I get vacation at certain times of the year. I have 2 weeks in November of 2026 and 2 weeks in April 2027. I don't inform them what I'm doing on vacation. I thought the question was how common to take off work for Coachella or something else. If I wanted the time off I would have to call out sick.
MyUsername2459@reddit
You don't get any actual time off work?
No vacation time? No personal days?
Sounds like you have a terrible employer.
Prestigious-Comb4280@reddit
We get vacation. I have worked for worse. When I was in accounting they freaked out when I wanted to take vacation because no one could do my job when I was gone. My boss had 1000 hours accrued and they told him he needed to take it by the end of the year or lose it. He quit and got paid the money that was owed to him. Lots of people here that think that taking off of work is no big deal. For many managers it is a big deal.
clearliquidclearjar@reddit
That's actually super common for a few industries - retail jobs often offer no PTO or medical leave. Hospitality, too.
goblin_hipster@reddit
Is it today? Had no idea. Not really a big talking point in Wisconsin lol
johnqadamsin28@reddit (OP)
Really? Everyone here was talking about Sabrina Carpenters gas station
FeralGiraffeAttack@reddit
Ah yes Coachella, the nationally celebrated holiday that we all take time off work for
johnqadamsin28@reddit (OP)
In socal it is
Arleare13@reddit
Do you think we all live in "Socal?"
Personal_Pain@reddit
The fact that this question is asked in the first place implies they know we don’t live in SoCal.
Express-Stop7830@reddit
I heard they also stop random drug tests for one lunar cycle.
Prestigious-Comb4280@reddit
LOL
Cowboywizard12@reddit
Pretty sure this is basically only a california tjing to do
FiddleThruTheFlowers@reddit
California and near where Coachella is held, maybe. At least in the Bay Area, I don't know of anybody who makes the trek down to SoCal for it.
johnqadamsin28@reddit (OP)
Yeah but that cause you guys can't deal with heat
JennItalia269@reddit
I know people from PA who’ve gone so I wouldn’t exclusively say that.
Plus Coachella is closer to phoenix and Las Vegas than San Francisco.
datbundoe@reddit
I think it's mostly a college aged thing to do to? I don't really know, I'm just basing this off my own college experience and regional music festival
DargyBear@reddit
I take a week off to go to a festival every fall but OP’s phrasing it like Coachella is a national holiday lol
Several_Celebration@reddit
I wouldn't necessarily be shocked, but I've never worked with someone that's gone to Coachella, so not very common.
johnqadamsin28@reddit (OP)
Maybe cause u in chi?
Several_Celebration@reddit
Hmm. You may be onto something there.
cherry_monkey@reddit
Shit, I don't even know people that have taken off for Lollapalooza, and that's in Chicago. To be fair, I have taken off for warped tour once in my working life
Folksma@reddit
Can you guys stop insulting and attacking OP? This is a perfectly innocent question
Prestigious-Comb4280@reddit
Who is attacking? Why is this in ask an American? This person is in California and I'm assuming American.
johnqadamsin28@reddit (OP)
Thank you. I figured it was nationally known as well as it is here in socal
Arleare13@reddit
lol, why would that be at all remotely common outside of the very specific area near that event?
johnqadamsin28@reddit (OP)
Well LA is basically the cultural center of the US. Anything happens here affects the country. Our mayor basically runs the west Coast
Arleare13@reddit
So is this just like a bot programmed to emulate the stereotypical insufferable Angelino?
Rockfell3351@reddit
I'm not even sure what that is.
sneezhousing@reddit
Boogie music festival
Rockfell3351@reddit
Ah. I'm in Chicago, so I've seen people take off a day or so for Lollapalooza, but not this.
sneezhousing@reddit
That makes sense
Roborana@reddit
I always forget that it's a music festival and instead think it's about purses.
MyUsername2459@reddit
Yeah, every time I hear that I keep thinking it's some fashion show or something.
SteampunkRobin@reddit
?? No one ever takes off here for Coachella. Why would they?
johnqadamsin28@reddit (OP)
It pretty chill for most people
Prestigious-Comb4280@reddit
Why are you asking this in ask an American? You are an American. Do what your job lets you do.
WarrenMulaney@reddit
I live about 3.5 hours away from Indio. I've known maybe 3 or 4 people that go at least one day. But is sure isn't common.
I actually know more people that go to the EDM thing in Vegas.
Anon-John-Silver@reddit
I’ve never personally known anyone who has been to Coachella
GotMeAMuleToRide@reddit
I know more people who have performed at Coachella than who have attended.
Kellzy1212@reddit
Lmao, same.
tlollz52@reddit
Did they perform via steaming?
itadapeezas@reddit
😭
Kellzy1212@reddit
I’ve never known anyone that went. IMO, the peak was 10 years ago. I live in Vegas, so we take time off for other festivals like Cruel World, PRB, Cy Fest, WWWY and the many others within short distance. I’m going to Sick New World, Viva and EDC this year. When i lived in Florida, I’d fly out for one a year. They can get very expensive when you have to pay for the travel side.
GOTaSMALL1@reddit
Hmmm… I wonder. Is it more common nationally to take a day off for Coachella or to take a day off for the Masters?
SixFlagsFiveGuys@reddit
I heard that all this shit is AI being trained by bots. Fuck Reddit now apparently.
Basic_Pomelo_478@reddit
It is a bot and its other posts are unhinged. 😂
SixFlagsFiveGuys@reddit
Yea I just unfollowed this sub. Seems like all the question subs are bots. At least Reddit is still great for weird sex shit.
smorones@reddit
Lol
I_Owe_Suzanner@reddit
Not common at all...Coachella is very Los Angele/SoCal focused event. It is in the middle of the desert a long way from anything. Getting to, and attending Coachella is not a casual event. It requires planning and, most of all money.
RunJumpSleep@reddit
I have spent my entire life in Los Angeles and only know of a coworkers whose two kids that went. Heat, no bathrooms, drugs and too many people. Not my thing.
misawa_EE@reddit
I know more people who have taken time off for the Masters than I do Coachella.
johnqadamsin28@reddit (OP)
Where do you live? Like a rural part or something
misawa_EE@reddit
A bit rural in Virginia, about 30-ish minutes from Richmond.
Artichoke_Salad@reddit
We watch the live stream every year, but we don’t take the day off or anything. We don’t attend in person because it looks miserable, but we do love enjoying the lineup.
ketonat@reddit
Never have I ever had this happen. I am in the Atlanta metro though, so it would be a hike for anyone to go to Coachella.
Apprehensive-Ant2141@reddit
I went in 2006 but never again.
Distinct_Chair3047@reddit
No one does.
Naive-Kangaroo3031@reddit
No, we take off for jazz fest and mardi gras though
dopefiendeddie@reddit
I cannot think of a single person I know who's gone to Coachella.
No-Contact6664@reddit
My area has its own festivals and they are better.
Zephora@reddit
Some of my coworkers take off for our local music festivals, and neither of those is Coachella.
Ahpla@reddit
I think I only know of one person who has ever even been to Coachella and that is because the lived in California.
I_CANT_SEE@reddit
I've had co-workers take time off for Coachella but that's cause I'm in my 20s in California in a well-paying industry that lets people afford music festivals. It's otherwise super uncommon
FiddleThruTheFlowers@reddit
I'm in such an industry in California (granted, the other side of the state from Coachella) and don't know of anybody taking time off to go for it. Burning Man, yes. Coachella, no.
Dapper-Presence4975@reddit
Right? This is such a weird question. While we’re on rando subjects…. Where were you for Woodstock 1999? lol!
pmonichols@reddit
Perhaps you missed that you can post about Coachella here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Coachella/
LieutenantStar2@reddit
I was in LA last year for a sports comp same weekend as Coachella. Airport and rental car lot were mayhem
johndoenumber2@reddit
I'm in Tennessee, where it's not common at all, though when I taught high school seniors often talked about going on a road trip there. I never knew any of them to actually do it.
But I know lots of people that take off for Bonnaroo, but it's not given to them/everyone.
Dapper-Presence4975@reddit
Why is someone from California asking this in Ask An American?
MyUsername2459@reddit
Someone who thinks that people thousands of miles away give a care about their local music festivals.
Salarian_American@reddit
I work in the IT industry, it's way more common to have people take time off for like Pax East or BlizzCon or whatever.
johnqadamsin28@reddit (OP)
I don't know what those are but stagecoach is pretty popular among the guys than Coachella here
MainelyKahnt@reddit
Nobody outside of California would do so unless they are trust fund babies who go every year. The flight out there alone is more than most people here budget for vacations. And that's before the exorbitant ticket price just to do drugs and suffer hearing loss.
brokenman82@reddit
I don’t know anyone that’s ever been
Grindar1986@reddit
Never even heard of it. But for ballpark numbers, attendance of around 500k, US population of 350 million, so...not accounting for international attendees you're looking at 1 in 700 people having attended and most of those will be from the California area. Pretty unlikely outside if that area seems like.
Unique-Ad-9316@reddit
I don't even know what it is.
HidingInTrees2245@reddit
It’s a really big music festival near Palm Sorings CA.
ech0cide@reddit
I had to google Coachella to find out what it is.
theycallmethevault@reddit
Nada. We’re more likely to take a day off for the Oaks.
HidingInTrees2245@reddit
I took a day off for it once but not to attend. I took a day because I knew the 10 would be gridlock on the way home from work.
tsukiii@reddit
Maybe a handful of young folks at my office. Not enough for me to notice.
MyUsername2459@reddit
I never hear anyone in real-life actually ever even mention that event.
I see it sometimes talked about in the media, but that's it. I've never known anyone to even mention it, much less go to it.
DesertWanderlust@reddit
I forgot Coachella was today. I went 3 times 20 years ago. We slept in the car each time, which I think they've been cracking down on. Now I just don't have the money or patience to go.
No-Profession422@reddit
I'm swapping shifts with a guy so he and his gf can go tomorrow.
Odelay45@reddit
Huh, not a chance.....
Now....taking today off for the Masters, that's something I'd agree to.
Least_Bat1259@reddit
Is cochlea a music festival or something?
Prestigious-Comb4280@reddit
Why is this in "ask an American"? Are you American?
cormack16@reddit
Nope
nmacInCT@reddit
Is that today? I've never known anyone to take it off.
nowhereman136@reddit
Here in NJ it's pretty common. My work place shuts down every year. Half the staff fly out to California for the live event while the other have attend one of the many local fairs hosting live streams of Coachella.
44035@reddit
Most of my co-workers use up their vacation time for the Met Gala and the Cannes Film Festival, and usually the Oscars, so it's hard to squeeze in a visit to Coachella.
ABelleWriter@reddit
Absolutely not
cwcam86@reddit
I don't even know what/where that is.
SphericalCrawfish@reddit
"In your area" is doing a lot of work here, right?
The Live stream starts at 7 at night here. So it's either after work or I would have had to taken a plane this morning or yesterday. Even in California you would only have to dip maybe an hour early for the live stream.
Also there are only 250,000 or so tickets over the course of the event. So only 0.03% of the population can go at all.
In short. Not "common". Even where you are.
QuokkaMom@reddit
I didn't even know that was still a thing.
TCFNationalBank@reddit
I would only expect this of people who have tickets to the event, and I don't think people travel interstate for coachella but maybe I'm wrong?
The closest comparison I would have is working in the Chicago area, and it's common enough for people to take off work the weekend of Lollapalooza, but it's still a working day for 99% of people who are not attending the festival.
HarlequinKOTF@reddit
Literally unheard of. No one cares.
BagNo349@reddit
Never. We go to our own festivals instead.
dumptruckulent@reddit
It’s a lot less common for people not in California to go to a music festival in California. Hope this helps.
meganemistake@reddit
Never met a single person who went to coachella lol
crunchyfoliage@reddit
I don't think I know anyone who's ever been to Coachella
Hellooooooo_NURSE@reddit
Here in southern CA, I’d say it is common for the under 30 crowd, because many of them are actually going to it. I’ve never heard of someone taking the day off for it who isn’t going in person.
SufficientProject273@reddit
People in my area don't even know what those are... even I had to look it up.
nodramaonlyspooky@reddit
I mean, it's common for people to take vacation time off for events they plan to go to, but they usually don't give the details to everyone. I've never heard of anyone treating it like a special day worth taking off.
Affectionate_Ask2879@reddit
LOL, not at all common. Pretty sure 95% of people haven’t heard of it.
tandembike@reddit
I didn't even know Coachella was going on...
GSilky@reddit
I don't employ anyone wealthy enough to go behave like homeless derelicts for a week.
sneezhousing@reddit
Not at all like no one I know none of the jobs I've had. It's not close to ohio. It would be more than a day they would need ro take.
houdini31@reddit
Not in the least
Ballmaster9002@reddit
Not common at all. Not only not taking it off, but even being aware it is uncommon. I couldn't tell you where, when, or what exactly these are beyond knowing it's an event of some sort.
Prestigious-Comb4280@reddit
not at all. for real?
actualhumannotspider@reddit
Don't think I've ever heard someone mention it in real life.
Faroundtripledouble@reddit
No lol
witchy12@reddit
Extremely uncommon.
StardogChamp@reddit
Not at all
cans-of-swine@reddit
Not common
