Windows 10 to Linux Question

I have an older rig that needs to keep running for another year or two:
1080ti FTW
I7-6700k
ssd
16gb RAM
Microsoft says it's too old for windows 11 so I'm thinking about making the switch to a Linux version that works with my steam library.
Has anyone else done this? Any advice is much appreciated.

i recently went through the same thibg with my older hardware because i was worried about losing game support. i didn't want the hassle of learning a whole new system so i just upgraded to 10 from logkeys com via a fresh boot and it is good to the 1080ti. staying on a familiar platform kept my steam library running perfectly without any compatibility layers.

I had an i7-79somethingX and a 1080TI and it worked fine. For some reason catchy is giving me a few hiccups with the 1080TI since the NVIDIA driver that dropped everything below the 20 series but it has been getting better with updates and a little googling (it was refusing to allow resolutions above some weird like 1081p on my 1440p monitor.
Should work fine I would imagine, worked on garuda, nobara and cachy.

My identical system works like a dream with windows11. Only upgrade (for cost reasons) was the switch from sata SSD to nvme.

If you have a "spare" SSD (a 256GB will do) just install and try Linux out with 1 or 2 Steam titles.
Have E3-1270 v2 and E5-2697 v2 builds both on CachyOS. No regrets. Since the 1080 Ti is no longer getting Nvidia new game updates, a consideration for an AMD GPU may be in order to take advantage of continuing Mesa driver updates.

Steam works pretty well with Linux but not all games will. I use Fedora on all my stuff and rarely run into issues unless it’s a kernel level anti cheat but your hardware will probably cause more compatibility issues than Linux.

I'm not a Linux expert, but afaik you can use https://www.protondb.com/ to see what games will work on Linux. Alternatively, you can also use Rufus and the Windows 11 25H2 iso file to create a Windows 11 Installation Media USB that bypasses the Win 11 requirements.
