Gen X, what's a song that you hated when it first came out in the 70s-80s-90s but now you like?
Posted by Fhloston-Paradisio@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 373 comments
Insane in the Membrane has been getting more airplay on my commute radio station (you can tell I'm Gen X because I still listen to radio...). I HATED that song in the 90s, but now I kinda like it. it's stupid but catchy and not unpleasant. Just wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences.
Gloomy_Narwhal_4833@reddit
Smashing Pumpkins. His voice used to be like nails on a chalkboard, that were whining at the same time. I still dont like Billy Corgan much, his ego is just too much, but the music isnt as grating.
Umberlee168@reddit
I was just talking to my boyfriend about this a couple days ago. I like smashing pumpkins when I was a teenager, thought they were kind of me h in the last decade or so but I came around when I realized how freaking excellent their music is. I could take or leave Billy Corgan but he definitely provides an element that just wouldn't make them sound like the same band otherwise. And no one else sounds like them, either.

I always hated Baker Street until I got older. Always liked Right Down The Line, though. I just looked him up to make sure I had those titles right, and had no idea he was a founding member of Steelers Wheel.

I Can’t Make You Love Me by Bonnie Rait. She was too VH1 (remember when VH1 was the channel for adult-oriented music videos?!)
Now as an adult, after living life, the song cuts way too deep and is so tastefully done. She’s brilliant.

I hated Money for Nothing by Dire Straits because I was like eight when it came out and I only liked Duran Duranbut now I’m like why? They’re a great band and Stings in it and he’s awesome. I love this song.

Sting isn’t in Duran Duran. He was in the Police.

Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty.
I was 6 when that song came out. For some reason, when the sad sax started playing, it was like someone would press my hulk button. I would want to smash something.
It is now one of my favorite classic rock songs.

That album front to back is really really good if you have not listened to it and its entirety.

Roger Bennet made me love Fast Car
flyboy_za@reddit
Yeah, listening to this one when you're old enough to properly get it really kicks it up several notches.
Truly a masterpiece, gorgeous in how understated it is while still managing to get bags and bags of emotion across. They should study this one on those Idols type shows, learn how to make a song work without a musical formula coupled with a sob story for the performer to sell it.
jonesbeebee123@reddit
Agreed. I did not get it at all when it came out and was quick to change the dial. My now-husband listened to Tracy Chapman non-stop when we started dating. That’s when the light bulb came on and I realized the brilliance. And in case anyone thinks it’s because I was newly in love and making him happy, I still hate Neil Young no matter how much he plays him.

It's one of my guilty pleasures, completely out of sync with everything else I listen to then and now, but what a great track it is.

But now I hear it and it just brings those memories back at the campus pub drinking Snakebite and dancing the night away!!! Good times.
DevilMan17dedZ@reddit
Are Snakebites the same in the UK as the States? In the States they're made with Yukon Jack with lemon/lime juice. (Yukon by itself is pretty effin' rugged)
Historical_Nail7271@reddit
Ah Hell No - Snakebite UK - Half n Half / Lager and Cider. So like Stella and Scrumpy Jack.

Historical_Nail7271@reddit
What is K????? 🤔 My uni days were ca. 1998-2001. I was a 'mature' student like 10 years older than most of my fellow students.
Red Bull and Vodka was a popular drink, but I just couldn't, ugh so Gross. 🤢. Ketamine started to get real popular at the Raves around early naughties....
Is that what ya mean?? Never was my bag, but my nephews got into it. They called it Vitamin K.
..
NotTHATPollyGlot@reddit
No "K" is a hard cider. The strongest (? driest?) grade of cider.
I remember having a short-lived cider in the States (Oregon) in black matte bottles with a bright red "K". Those were excellent! I don't like dry cider, but these were so good!
I miss them.

You may not like them but they definitely don't suck! Alison Moyet, Vince Clarke, and Andy Bell are all incredibly talented musicians regardless if they aren't your thing. For me though Upstairs at Eric's is one of my stranded on a desert island albums which probably played a role in my not being a fan of Erasure initially along with finding Andy Bell's voice cringy at the time, although I did always love the Circus song, which still feels relevant.

Ooh La La by The Faces. It all makes so much more sense now:
Poor old Granddad I laughed at all his words I thought he was a bitter man He spoke of women's ways
"They'll trap you, then they use you Before you even know For love is blind and you're far too kind Don't ever let it show"
I wish that I knew what I know now When I was younger. I wish that I knew what I know now When I was stronger.
The Can Can's such a pretty show They'll steal your heart away But backstage, back on earth again The dressing rooms are grey
They come on strong and it ain't too long Before they make you feel a man But love is blind and you soon will find You're just a boy again
When you want her lips, you get a cheek Makes you wonder where you are If you want some more and she's fast asleep Then she's twinkling with the stars.
"Poor young grandson, there's nothing I can say You'll have to learn, just like me And that's the hardest way Ooh la la"
I wish that I knew what I know now When I was younger. I wish that I knew what I know now When I was stronger.

Hm…. I can’t think of anything. I’m usually pretty honest with myself from the jump. There’s something there for me, or there isn’t. As the song moves through my life with me, when I do hear it, it usually stays in the yay or nay category it was originally placed into.
Like someone else said, Steely Dan is one I’ve kinda come around on as I’ve aged and watched people break down their songwriting. Plus, all the amazing players they worked with over the years. I just listened to Aja for the first time a few weeks ago. Haven’t come around on them, but I’ve softened on my dislike quite a bit.
freerangeXkid@reddit
I did the opposite with Steely Dan. Liked them as a kid in the 70s-80s, but find myself changing the station the second I hear the first note now. It could be that I've just heard every song in their catalogue a million times and reached my limit.
When I think of it there aren't any songs that I didn't like as a kid that I do now. And any songs I liked then that I don't now isn't so much dislike...it's more indifference or just overplayed in my life experience
irmarbert@reddit
Totally. I’ve never been a big radio listener, but have had jobs where it’s on in the background, so Under The Bridge, Jeremy and hits like those have definitely worn out their welcome.

"Ain't Nobody" by Chaka Khan. I was too much of a pimply teenaged snob to get my nose out of the Depeche Mode album sleeves to see how amazing that song is. Hell, a lot of her 80s output was "tough" (as my Gen Alpha daughter likes to say).

Another Brick in the Wall Part II. It was the only Pink Floyd I knew and when I was young, classic rock radio played that song and Money constantly. It was relentless. I guess the song was like 10-15 years old in the high school years, but I thought it was old as dirt.

Agree! The Pretenders sounded like pretenders to me. Two things changed my mind; First, the video for Brass in Pocket, that I didn't see until years later. Chrissy as a waitress tries hard to flirt with guys that came into her diner, but they ignore her and drive off in that parade float of a car (a 1959 Cadillac). Being a car guy, I loved seeing a car like that in England. And 2) buying a copy of their first album at a garage sale for $.99 and hearing all of side 2 in its entirety. My God, the musicianship. Mystery Achievement never got played much on the radio where I am, and that song (the final track) and its relentless, driving frenzy just brings the house down every fucking time.

Just overall, I wasn’t a fan of Wham in the 1980s. I think hearing them all the time during some not very fun years (September of ‘83 thru August ‘85 overall sucked for me) just soured me on their music and vibe.
40+ years later, I think Wham is so much better than I gave them credit for. I always did like George’s solo stuff though, partly because my life was just so much better starting around the time he embarked on his solo career in ‘86.

I hated 80s music growing up, for being ubiquitous annoying pop. Now, I hear a bunch of classic 80s New Wave stuff on the oldies station, and honestly a lot of it slaps. This is crazy to say but a lot of 80s pop music has held up better than some of the rock, metal, and early hip hop from that era.

I love the songwriting of Jim Steinman! With Meat Loaf, with Bonnie Tyler, even with Barry Manilow and Barbara Streisand-- heck even with Air Supply-- most of their stuff was saccharine drivel but "Making Love Out of Nothing At All" was EPIC!
ObiWanKnieval@reddit
I agree. Considering his phenomenal talent and impressive list of iconic masterpieces, that guy's a tragically obscure figure in pop music history (I only recently discovered that he was the producer behind Floodland by The Sisters of Mercy).
It's a shame he never worked with Queen.
Perplexio76@reddit
He was also originally hired to produce Def Leppard's "Hysteria" album, but at that point in his career he was much more a songwriter. His turn at production of that album was disastrous. He was fired and the producer of HIgh & Dry and Pyromania, Mutt Lange, was brought back to produce Hysteria as well.
He's written/co-written a few musicals as well. He co-wrote "Whistle Down the Wind" with Andrew Lloyd Weber, the German musical "Tanz der Vampire", and he even turned Meat Loaf's "Bat Out of Hell" album into a musical.
They tried to do an American version of his German musical, Dance of the Vampires. But the producers didn't feel the American audiences would appreciate the gothic horror elements of the original so they toned down the horror elements and leaned more into the comedy for the American version. It was a total Broadway BOMB. It was terrible! Despite not knowing/understanding German, I actually really enjoy Tanz der Vampire.
DrKittyKevorkian@reddit
I happened across a week in the 80s where one Steinman song replaced another at #1. Guessing it was Bonnie Tyler and Air Supply.

I used to hate grunge, and I was a teen in the early 90s, so I was a bit of an outlier I guess. About 10 years back I started re-evaluating it. And while I'm still not necessarily a fan of a lot of it, I find it at least tolerable now for the most part. I do really like Mother Love Bone though. They kind of felt like the "link" between 80s hair metal and 90s grunge. A step in the evoluton, if you will. Andrew Wood sounded kind of like what Axl Rose might have sounded like with voice lessons (yes, I'm saying Wood was a better singer than Rose).

As a child of the 80s, it took 5-6 years into the 90s before I was dragged kicking and screaming, leaving fingernail tracks as I got pulled into the 90s against my will.
I didn't really start listening to 90s music until after Kurt Cobain died. As I'd been a big fan of Chicago, I really dug bands with horns, so I did appreciate the rise in popularity of Ska and New Swing in the 90s. I also kind of dug some of the new punk/punk adjacent stuff of the mid 90s like Green Day and The Offspring ("Dookie" and "Smash" were largely the soundtrack of my senior year of high school). Collective Soul and Toad the Wet Sprocket were also on my radar.
In college I enjoyed Savage Garden, Matchbox 20, and Third Eye Blind to name a few.
