I know how to read code but I really hate to write codes

So i am a CS student and i hope that am not wasting my time in this major cause i feel like am just learning theoretically cause just like i said I hate to write codes and am not good at it either
Also Ai is ruining me and i just use it without knowing what am doing sometimes 👎
Anyways my question is….
SHOULD I FIND ANOTHER MAJOR?

Do not do if you don't like it.

You maybe good at reading the words, but the inability tow write code and not being "good" at it means you're not truly reading it, either.
Change your major..

CS is not about writing code. THat's a small part of it.
It took me until my second semester until coding really clicked for me. I barely passed my first coding exam. But once I finished a practical course in my second semester, I was flying through all other coding courses. I also started programming in my free time.
You might only hate programming, because you are bad at it. Maybe you'll like it once you know the basics. Your brain has to learn how to think like a programmer. That needs time and practice, practice, practice. Reading code won't make you a programmer. You need to WRITE it. Again and again and again.

I'd recommend finishing your CS degree.
You are more likely than not hate your job regardless, vast majority of jobs suck. If you are going to do something unpleasant for 40 hours a week, at least pick something that pays well, and programming does.

If OP doesn't like coding, odds are they don't have any projects. They'll need more than just a degree to get a programming job; especially one that pays well.

honestly the reading-but-not-writing thing is super common and it usually just means you haven't written enough yet for it to feel natural. it's like how you can understand spanish way before you can hold a conversation in it. the gap closes with practice but it does feel annoying for a while.

> I hate to write codes
Could you clarify exactly what you don't like about it ? (You just said you don't like but didn't say what you dislike)
lurgi@reddit
It’s woooooooooork.
0x14f@reddit
What did you expect it to be ? (I am not trying to be sarcastic, I am genuinely curious...)
lurgi@reddit
I’m not OP :-)

I am soooooo sorry! 😅

CS is not about writing code. But:
1. you will write a lot of code during your major.
2. you should ask yourself why you hate it.
2.1. One possible reason is you don't really understand what you're doing. And this becomes frustrating. The behavior you described regarding how you use AI says a lot about it: when you just copy and paste code to pass tests, it becomes a pointless mechanical task, and it's pretty healthy not to like that.
2.2. Another possible reason is that you don't like to decompose problems, think algorithmically, solve challenges that require deep reasoning, be precise about logic, model the world in terms of mathematical structures, investigate how things work under the hood, design systems, analyze complexity... In that case, yes, you sould find another major.

Reading code is the simplest part, writing (and conceiving) code is the funniest part. If you don't like the latter, it's not for you
InfectedShadow@reddit
How do you know what you're reading is even correct or the best approach if you don't write code. Cause I work with people like this and the comments on their pull requests get into the double digits.
aqua_regis@reddit
If you hate writing code, you should probably change you major.
That is most likely just lack of practice
That is 100% a you problem that you brought upon yourself and that only you can fix by stopping to use it.

Computer Science is not about programming. You use programming purely to study computer science, so you can do other types of work other than software development. However, during the course of your degree, you will be writing code.  What you do with your degree is up to you. Â

If you give up this quickly are you sure a pivot is going to change anything?
Writing code is the easy part.
You just tap your little for ngers on the plastic buttons.
You just need to do more of it if you want to get better at it. School teaches you the foundation, the rest is up to you.
