Strange cars I saw this week

Saw these cars pull up together at a gas station in Central Alabama this week. They all had this weird matching wrap. Any idea what they could be?
ToadToes0314@reddit
Ahh new BMWs probably testing the new turn-signal option. They’ve been working on this tech for decades
I_Think_I_Cant@reddit
Dazzle camouflage to keep the exact details of unreleased cars obfuscated.
House_Of_Doubt@reddit
Ah yes, we wouldn’t want other OEMs to copy the ubiquitous blob shape that all other cross-over SUVs have these days.
KnowNothing_JonSnoo@reddit
Heh, when they try to be slick people complain its ugly or too weird, when they don't innovate, people complain it boring.
Tacticalmeat@reddit
The only thing the cyber truck has going for it. It's ugly but at least it's different
RapNVideoGames@reddit
Hey that blob is proprietary

Yes

I love seeing cars like this. I live in Columbus Ohio and see cars coming down from Honda/Acura Marysville. Even if it’s just the new Passport or whatever, It’s still fun.
Haunting_Dragonfly_3@reddit
Super common here in MI. Usually have M plates and random external sensors.
RefinedPhoenix@reddit
Remember that Adrian van Hooydonk signed off on these
DanGTG@reddit
Too damn ugly to go out in public without a camo wrap.
Warrington17415@reddit
Live in the Detroit area and you will see camouflaged vehicles like this every day. Often with weird sensors, bulky foam shapes, etc, but usually with a "Manufacturer" labeled license plate.
grandthefthouse@reddit
I swear this is a gas station in Ann Arbor
nautzi@reddit
Those have manufacturers plates from SC on them
seang239@reddit
Yea, you’re looking at it. That’s the wrap to use if you don’t want cameras/people to recognize anything special about your vehicle. Besides that wrap making it unique of course..
Chemical_Result4981@reddit
2027 vehicle test drive, they don't want the public to see them yet.
x_x-O_o-x_x@reddit
Yeah we could never tell they are just more milk toast run of the mill SUV's
MasterofPeridots@reddit
They could have just drove them without the camo and no one except car journalists who are desperate to get press cars would notice.
Due_Break4208@reddit
My mom use to to this for ford. They were just regular paint jobs.
Downside190@reddit
Arguably even the press probably wouldn't be able to tell without advanced warning if they were just painted a regular black colour
AquaFlowPlumbingCo@reddit
That’s milquetoast for the pedantic

They look like the same cars that are out today
NoEditor0@reddit
Ive been wrapping cars for 13 years and Ive never heard of this. I wanna do it!
Competition-Dapper@reddit
Let me guess, they look like a douche bag would drive them and ride your add on the interstate
sakhabeg@reddit
I wonder why they even put in the effort. The final car will be a boring, soap shaped SUV crossover whatever in a shade of gray. The only mystery left is how ugly they manage to make the front.
FlatbedtruckingCA@reddit
Test vehicles from the manufacturer.. testing company may be KETT engineering, LDW or another company.. i use to work for Roush - West Coast Vehicle Testing center as a test driver and all of our cars had this car camouflage on them.. our testing contracts was with Kia, Hyundai , Acura, BMW, and Ford..
nightowl_7680@reddit
Pre-production mules is what they are called.
NJNeal17@reddit
Wraps have become common for unreleased models of cars.
JMS1991@reddit
South Carolina manufacturer plates, likely BMW prototypes. They build most of the SUV models in Greer, SC, and I see prototypes camouflaged on the road here pretty often. It's strange to see a car in the camo though, since those aren't built here.
adale_50@reddit
Test mules. Probably final designs at this point. Either way, they don't want anyone to be able to see the body lines and copy their design. They want the reveal and launch to be special.
Spoiler alert: It's the same boring cars as every other manufacturer with the same tiny face lift they do every few years.

Upcoming BMW’s. The new 7 series is on the left, for example

I saw one at a gas station and asked the guy why his car was like that and he was quickly added to my very short list of absolute douchbags based on his response.

I want to say BMWs as they use that camo and the wheel designs look like their current ones, but the door handles look like the Ford Mach-E and Volvo EX60, but could also be Mercedes.
They'll be BMWs, Mercs, VWs, or Volvos as they all have factories in SC.
simnie69@reddit
BMW is also going to use those doorhandles on the X7. No idea why, but there is enough evidence of this
ashyjay@reddit
Looks small to be an X7.
NaBUru38@reddit
It's likely an X5. In any case, there will be an X9.

This is called Erlkönig, they're upcoming models, camouflaged to make it hard to make out the exact shape and lines, doing test drives in the outside world.
dth1717@reddit
Live around Dearborn you see that stuff a lot
NoSalamander7749@reddit
What's going on here I wonder. The other license plates don't look this blurry/choppy, and I can still read the state - camera error maybe?
killmesara@reddit
These are prototype vehicles. They get wrapped like this so no one can copy designes. I know because O used to work for Jaguar Landrover as a robust test engineer and our drivers drove wrapped cars like these everyday. The cars are being tested under real world conditions. Mostly drive train tests. Its a pretty great job if you can get hired. Which all you have to do is pass a drug test and a driving test
rockstar_not@reddit
When I was an engineer at GM, we called these “vehicle rides or ride trips”, where a multi-road type, multi-use set of driving conditions was scheduled for mostly product development engineering staff and execs - to try to discover yet undiscovered real world driving conditions might show up, or ensure that a known issue had been properly taken care of. Conditions that might not occur in the labs or proving grounds. Usually some type of extreme operating condition would be a central feature, that was difficult to simulate in any other way. Sometimes the team would try to get creative and use styling elements, badges, etc. from competitor brands to try to confuse both casual observers like you, or automotive press and photographers.

Camo to hide body lines in photos.
Someone is street testing new production models.
Blanchimont@reddit
Late stage development prototypes for upcoming BMW models. On the left there's a 7 Series, possibly the electric i7, the rest seem to be various versions of the upcoming BMW X5.
DrTurb0@reddit
Look at the door handle wings, it’s the next BMW X5 G65. not strange cars, prototypes/test mules.
