Two very good reasons. Planes dont stop very well. And if your dumb ass hits a plane in motion and you get out of the truck enjoy becoming a fine red mist as you go through the engine
I started a transportation business last year and got to drive all over the MSP Airport last year. Felt like a crazy experience since most people will never drive right behind and in between the planes at the gate.
My dad had this happen on 2 occasions, one of his drivers accidentally went onto the strip while trying to deliver parts, and another time my dad himself went onto the landing site of SpaceX lol
Best friend is an ATC at PHL. They are one of the busiest airports in world when taking into account size because they do much shorter trails than most airports (per him). Totally makes sense it’d be crazy trying to get across runways.
They will for as long as they can but some of the older ones are hitting the total number of pressure cycles they can take. Plus every ten years or so commercial planes need to have a D-level maintenance check, which for a for a 757 I would guess to be about $1-1.5 million and takes months.
At a certain point, the cost is just no longer worth it. As soon as the A321 XLR is out in real numbers, those 757s are going to start to go away. The worst part about that is the A321 XLR in no way, shape or form has the same hot and heavy performance that a 757 does.
I sure hope the Reyes vehicle is the escort. Not sure how they do it at O'Hare, but in general, if you are unbadged and being escorted onto the airport in a vehicle. The escort vehicle will be directly in front of you, and you glue your bumper to the escort vehicle.

We had to put a sign up at our dispatch office reminding drivers that planes have the right of way when crossing across airport runways
Lone_Wanderer2076@reddit
Should've reminded that fire truck...
Waisted-Desert@reddit
Pfft... you act like I can stop this truck on a dime, don't you realize I'm 80,000 pounds???
Frogspoison@reddit
4 wheelers stop on a dime, trucks stop on a dollar, but planes need a Cleveland to be able to stop.
ajoyce76@reddit
Wait, is that a metric or standard Cleveland?
Frogspoison@reddit
It's a 1k bill Cleveland.
SeaRow556@reddit
You have wings so use them!
hellbillyjoker@reddit
And here I thought only Steamships needed a Cleveland to stop...

Is this why my wife keeps asking me about Cleveland steamers?

Exactly

You gotta lay it right. Otherwise all bets are off.
Frogspoison@reddit
Nah they need the entire federal budget, hah!

I was born in 2001, what is a Cleveland?

Part of me continues to want to ask why ... And then the other part says.... No don't ask that.

This isn't American truck sim... You can't just drive down the tarmac lol
KatieTSO@reddit
You can if ground control clears you onto the runway/apron/taxiway!
Immediate_Lunch7713@reddit
Sure you can.. and I have.. I've delivered right on the tarmac at a brand new passenger gate that was being built at Laguardia Airport in NYC.. 🤷♂️
leadpoem@reddit
Well you can... I don't recommend it as several federal and local agencies are going to be really interested in talking to you.

I loved delivering to airports (tanker, de-icer). So cool to be up close to some of those massive cargo planes. 👍

Turn left at Alpha 7 , follow it around to the Bravo bridge , you’ll be ok .
buttweasel76@reddit
I used to get to drive around on the ramp at Tampa International.
Sadly not anymore.
iskimii@reddit
my main concern is due to the lack of turn indicators, does the pilot use hand signals to indicate turns and stops

I deliver diesel in the Philly airport, you really need to keep your head on a swivel, especially at night or in the snow, it can get really hectic.

Got to love the 757, so sad that they are getting old.

They will be refitting and restoring those planes for many years to come
