I'd rather it be something more akin to the Bronco and Wrangler than just a Canyon with a third row. There are plenty of cars like that out there already, a square body inspired off road focused Jimmy/Blazer would be awesome.
I'd rather they not go the removable roof route, personally.
The Colorado/Canyon have extremely capable off-road versions in the ZR2/AT4X trim levels. A ZR2 Bison is basically the truck equivalent to a Bronco Sasquatch.
Basing this on the Colorado platform is how you achieve what you seem to want...
Then why does the Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee L exist if the Durango is enough SUV for one brand? They are different vehicles for different markets.
The Durango is based off the previous generation Grand Cherokee. The point is they cover different segments in the market. A two-row Ram/Dodge SUV based on the Wrangler would be a very different 4x4 than a Durango, just like a 4Runner and Highlander are similar in size but don’t serve the same market segment.
If it is in fact a BOF RWD V8-powered model, they have nothing from which to rebadge it. The global Trailblazer is I4 or V6 only, based on the Colorado from 15 years ago. It could be built off the current US Colorado, but that platform only uses the 2.7 I4.
There is enough length, but not sure about width and height. The current model is only using the 2.7 I4 and it's pretty cramped in there. It may end up being like the old V8-powered Colorado, where they had to shoehorn it in and didn't end up selling many.
BOF, is probably 50/50. Add in a v8 option and that drops to zero. Even a v6 option is unlikely.
Modern day GM under Mary doesn’t build cool stuff like they used to. They’re quickly going the way of appliance vehicles. With the exception of a few caddy models and the vette.
This is such a weird take. They have a capable off-roader on every truck with the ZR2 trim level, the Bison packages on those are the most serious off-road armor package in the entire market. The Blackwings, Escalade V, Corvette in all its forms, Hummer EV.
This is as much or more "cool stuff" than basically any other manufacturer.
You missed my “except a few caddy’s and vette” statement? Yes, GM caters with a few models at the 100k+ price point. For us peasants, they have zero cool offerings. Say sub $60k.
Regarding the truck offerings: I see a half dozen brand new raptors daily. I have never seen a bison package in real life.
I didn't miss it, I am again just suggesting your framing is off.
A "few caddy's and vette" implies as if this is a sub par number of offering. When in reality its more than most any other manufacturer. And they're doing "really cool" stuff like offering a manual with their high performance sedans which is exceedingly rare these days.
And its the Blackwings + V-Series versions of the Escalade, Lyriq, and Optiq (which I know has no interest to you but it does in the actual market).
And I am not you. I have no clue what YOU are seeing but I've seen a number of Bisons out in real life.
Sure, most of their stuff is above $60K. But most of the cool stuff out there these days is. And from GM's perspective... the Camaro was an amazing performance coupe and they even offered 1LE packages on every engine but no one bought those. Though it sounds like the Camaro will come back too.
So in all... GM is offering just as many "cool" options as anyone.
Want a 400hp Explorer, or 475hp f-150. How about 480hp electric vehicle? Yep, ford offers any of those for 50-60k.
And I’m no ford fan boy. My last 7 vehicles have been GM products. Couldn’t be more disappointed in their products or quality these days.
Sure, for 70k they’ll sell you a 6.2 that might not make it home before catastrophic failure. Or 10l80 which may make it to 30k miles before requiring a valvebody, which even though revised will fail the same, oh and wait - is on back order for 120days.
"GM doesn't make fun stuff in my budget" isn't the same as "GM doesn't make fun stuff."
And I've never defended GM's reliability... which I think is really in a bad position. I'd have bought a Silverado 1500 ZR2 Bison myself if I thought the engine or transmission wasn't going to die prematurely. But again... that's not what you started by saying.
I’d counter that argument with the C8 line-up. All of that is damn cool. Especially what they are able to do at the cost compared supercar manufacturers.
“As regular readers will no doubt remember, GM Authority reported several years ago that General Motors was working on a new midsize SUV that would carry the Jimmy name, only to wind up axing the project in favor of other priorities”
In other words, I’ll believe it when I see it. And this won’t have a v8 offering. There’s no chance of that. They would never risk compromising they’re $100k cash cows.
They’ll make it seem cool enough on paper for people to want, until you drive it or get into the specs. And they’ll end up selling 50k units the first year with rapid decline.
Seeing you’re a ford owner, what GM engine offering do you is comparable to the v6 EB?
2.7 to 2.7 is about the only one that seems close. And I think ford gets the win in reliability, fuel economy and power. The GM sounds a cooler though.
The definitive word is that it will share the same mechanicals as the Chevy Camaro. It will be a plug in hybrid with an Ultium pack capable of 12 miles mated to a 187 HP turbo charged 3 cylinder engine. It is supposed to be “curb capable”, meaning you can off road it out of a Burger King drive through. It will share a 55” screen with Google AAOS. As always, no AA or CP.
Now, relaxed emissions and fuel economy regulations rolled out by the [...] administration have altered the landscape, and GM Authority sources tell us that GM is reassessing its previously shelved GMC Jimmy plans, including the possibility of a V8 powerplant under the hood.
CAFE had opposition from both sides of the aisle, particularly around how it incentivized trucks to become massive. In addition, a lot of politicians probably didn't know it existed in the first place. Of all the deregulation done, I feel that CAFE is probably the most likely to stay dead.
It bears mentioning that the emasculating of CAFE won't make small vehicles come back. If anything, it's now even easier for OEMs to make big vehicles.
Honestly I feel like the bronco could have been based on the f150 platform but 2 door and solid front axle in front and the bronco sport on the ranger platform
I know this is sacrilege in r/cars, but if it’s taking this long for GM to buck up and bring a modern Wrangler/4Runner/Bronco rival to the market, why not just fuck it and make a Jimmy EV to compete directly with the R1S and Scout Traveler? Yes, I am an electric degenerate
The Acadia served as that for its second gen, albeit with a third row tacked on. Not sure why they did that only to revert to a full-size for the current model.
If they do it properly, I think there's both a market for it and could even be used as a differentiator for GMC and Chevrolet. Chevy and Buick can have a stronger focus on crossovers while GMC has a few more "rugged" options, like a BOF Jimmy and reviving the Hummer HX Concept.
Even with the original Typhoon being a GMC, I think a "muscle SUV" would be an effective halo vehicle to create, add some Buick styling, and brand as some kind of Buick SUV counterpart to a Grand National halo.
What generation? My mom’s 18 Acadia Denali sucks to drive compared to my wife’s Explorer st.
The torque steer on the Denali is unlike anything I’ve drove since the early 90s. Arguably kinda cool for a fwd sport sedan, totally unacceptable for a 3 row crossover.
Personally, I'm not really a fast driver or anything. I haven't noticed any performance issues but I'm also not stomping on the gas or anything. Most of the time I'm going 35 on a backroad because the highway lowkey scares me these days.
I just like that the ride is smooth, speakers are good, good visibility, etc. Just feels like a really great car to do shit with (which is why I borrow it all the time). It's also suuuuuper roomy for crossover imo
Surprised this hasn't happened sooner, especially when it's going to just be a Canyon SUV as the render suggests. (Will a V8 fit? Well, it ain't called a small block for nothing...) Will be interesting to see what the General does. Probably will not be as cool as you think.
Im sure they will dump millions into development and then scrap it once the rules change again. Other makes just make the cars that will sell. GM makes cars they can make easily for a few years

Slideways@reddit
I was just thinking that it's strange that Dodge/Ram hasn't built a Wrangler-based SUV with a real roof.
mini4x@reddit
Durango / Grand Cherokee fits that slot in their lineup.
Nobody wants a wrangler with a fixed roof. Even though 90% of owners will never take theirs off.
Slideways@reddit
If the Grand Cherokee fits that slot, why does the Wrangler exist?
mini4x@reddit
Wrangler is not a fixed roof; you were asking about fixed roof SUVs.
Slideways@reddit
Then why does the Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee L exist if the Durango is enough SUV for one brand? They are different vehicles for different markets.
mini4x@reddit
Cherokee is a tarted up Fiat let's just ignore that one, totally different segment.
Durango / Grand Cherokee are just brand engineered versions of the same car, and the L is just longer. They are basically the same vehicle.
Drzhivago138@reddit
The KL Cherokee was Fiat-based. The new model which I don't think has even dropped in the US yet is on the STLA Large platform.
mini4x@reddit
So a 10+ year old FWD car platform.
Slideways@reddit
The Durango is based off the previous generation Grand Cherokee. The point is they cover different segments in the market. A two-row Ram/Dodge SUV based on the Wrangler would be a very different 4x4 than a Durango, just like a 4Runner and Highlander are similar in size but don’t serve the same market segment.
mini4x@reddit
Jeep will never let that happen. Can't create internal competition for the Golden egg.
Slideways@reddit
Like it did with the Gladiator?
mini4x@reddit
Still a Jeep product, its allowed.
Slideways@reddit
Their biggest seller is Grand Cherokee, and we’ve already established they shared that with Dodge.
mini4x@reddit
Doesn't come close to the margins they make on the Wtsngkers.
Slideways@reddit
I guess you’re right.
Slideways@reddit
If the Grand Cherokee fits that slot, why does the Wrangler exist?
Significant-Pen-6049@reddit
Good lord we all know this will not be a new vehicle but a rebadged current model.
Drzhivago138@reddit
If it is in fact a BOF RWD V8-powered model, they have nothing from which to rebadge it. The global Trailblazer is I4 or V6 only, based on the Colorado from 15 years ago. It could be built off the current US Colorado, but that platform only uses the 2.7 I4.
Sandy_Koufax@reddit
Why can’t it be a single cab Silverado with a bed cap?
Drzhivago138@reddit
Because 1. they're not going after the full-size market, and 2. 2-door pickups/SUVs aren't popular anymore.
Sandy_Koufax@reddit
I guess nothing is stopping them from dropping an LS in a Colorado and adding a bed cap. There’s space in the bay.
Drzhivago138@reddit
There is enough length, but not sure about width and height. The current model is only using the 2.7 I4 and it's pretty cramped in there. It may end up being like the old V8-powered Colorado, where they had to shoehorn it in and didn't end up selling many.
shawizkid@reddit
Let’s be honest. There is 0.01% chance of that.
BOF, is probably 50/50. Add in a v8 option and that drops to zero. Even a v6 option is unlikely.
