Budapest and its cakes

Hello, I will be travelling to Hungary for 3 full days (and one morning). I plan to spend 2 full days in Budapest (Sunday and Monday) and on the 3rd day I plan to explore Szentendre.
I was planning to go to Ruszwurm Cukrászda to taste Dobostorta, Esterházy torta and Krémes (Ruszwurm torta), but now it's shown as temporarily closed and by doing some research the future doesn't look that bright and it surely won't be open again that soon.
Another potentional place Auguszt Cukrászda is closed on the days of my visit. Any suggestions that aren't just meant for tourists and preferably a place, where I could get all (or at least 2) of them at once? How good is Szamos Gourmet Ház, at least Dobostorta and Esterházy torta can be found there.
And where to even find Krémes (Ruszwurm torta)? Is it even being made in any other place than Ruszwurm Cukrászda?
Thanks in advance!

I would definitely suggest you go to the Gerbeaud and get one Gerbeaud SZELET (not the Gerbeaud cake, that's different!) for takeaway. They charge double price if you sit down but if you take it home it is half price. 4-5 EUR for takeaway and 9-10 EUR if you sit down.
Auguszt sells that famous Ruszwurm torta too.
Szamos' best: Őrség aranya. What they have is really great: Őrség aranya ice cream! (pumpkin seed ice cream, really good and unique).
Best place to visit for cakes: Daubner. It is on the way to Szentendre. This is where 100% locals go for cakes! Expect huge queues.

OK, that's good to know! I ruled them out already for being overpriced, but if takeaway is half the price, then it's not a problem to try at least one slice of cake from there.
As for Daubner, I have to see, if I can get to there. My best bet is on Sunday's evening before it closes.
NonloCo@reddit
If you go on Sunday evening, not much will be left, definitely not fresh.
They are closed on Monday and Tuesday.
After 5-6PM on Sunday, since they close at 7PM, I would not recommend to go to Daubner.
Additional_Help1071@reddit
Ohh I think the locals favourite definitely is Daubner cukrászda - you can reach by foot (little walk uphills in a moody area) from Kolossy tér. That place really worth a try.
coderedacdc@reddit (OP)
Yes, I have read that it's one of the best ones, the problem is that it's closed on Monday (my Buda side day), but I will see, if I can try to reach before it closes on Sunday.
Additional_Help1071@reddit
yes go on Sunday
Altruistic_Onion_471@reddit
Ooo, Daubner is a great one!
Smooth_Student_5252@reddit
And try E80 there !
Additional_Help1071@reddit
yessss
Additional_Help1071@reddit
yeah dear Op these cakes are everywhere, but quality differs, if you not want average or overpriced average stuff just go and figure why half of Buda is always lining up in Daubner :-)
viszlat@reddit
All three cakes you mentioned are very common, you will find them everywhere. A safe bet would be Nandori Cukraszda.
coderedacdc@reddit (OP)
If I can't get to Daubner, I will definitively check this place out.
Odd-Ad432@reddit
They have krémes and french krémes (caramel and whipped cream on top of the original krémes).
I’m not so fond of the Dobos and Esterházy cake, so I don’t know if they’re good, but the kremes is one of the best I’ve tried in Budapest. Especially the French one.
Far-Pick2633@reddit
Go to Daubner and try "Áfonyás rigó" (blueberry + chocolate), also try "Őrség zöld aranya" at some other place where they have it.
coderedacdc@reddit (OP)
Like I said to others, I will have to see, if I can make it to Daubner on Sunday. But it's surely one of the best places.
StarWarsKnitwear@reddit
That's actually a really good cakery. They make excellent cakes. I'd highly recommend Őrség Zöld Aranya cake from there, it has a really unique flavor that you couldn't find anywhere else. It's a Hungarian specialty cake, with the dominant flavors being white chocolate, pumpkin seed and raspberry. It's almost always in stock at Szamos.
coderedacdc@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the suggestion!
eo97@reddit
Yes yes yes!! Őrség Zöld Aranya is the best, please try it!
fogatlan_prokator@reddit
Őrség zöld aranya is definitely the best!
Gold_Combination_520@reddit
These cakes are very general and popular so most of the places will have them (but you can call them beforehand to be sure).
I can recommend Nándori cukrászda it's a cozy little place with great cakes!
coderedacdc@reddit (OP)
OK, it looks like a good place, if I can't get to Daubner in time, I might go there the next day.
fishy_horcrux@reddit
You can also try Gerbeaud
coderedacdc@reddit (OP)
That's another good choice, though overpriced, if I dine in there.
susogos_adiads@reddit
Better yet: flódni
Traditionally that's an ashkenazi jewish pastry,
tho i never seen / heard about it outside of Hungary. It's not really that common even in Budapest...
Consistent_Act5612@reddit
A ( jó ) flódni zseniális!!!! Imádom !
Dobostorta sehol nincs ehhez képest
fishy_horcrux@reddit
I meant the place, but the pastry is great as well.
swiftmen991@reddit
It’s good but it’s very overpriced compared to other places
igenigen@reddit
Only if you dine in, to go they are normally priced.
Icy-Comfortable-1157@reddit
I'd recommend Daubner - like others -, plus Gerbeaud, both are our favorites and very good quality for the money 🥰
coderedacdc@reddit (OP)
I will see, if I can get to Daubner, sadly, it's opening hours don't align too well with my trip.
Intelligent-Lock8731@reddit
There are three Auguszt pastry shops in the city. With different opening hours, all of them are in the city or easily accessible. Their krémes is my favourite, better than Ruszeurm’s, trust me. And Auguszt’s somlói galuska. Try it!
coderedacdc@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the suggestion! Yes, I found one that's open on Sundays and Somlói galuska looks nice, too.
Far_Plastic_8639@reddit
Try Hamdi Cukraszda at Wesselenyi street. Nice and affordable real retro cake place. Most places mentioned above (Auguszt, Gerbeaud etc) became tourist traps with sinking quality and outrageous prices.
mother_karen@reddit
Hey if you want to try non traditional but the best cakes in the city i really recommend Asztalka cukrászda. Everything is homemade, no adatives. It really is the best. The prices are relatively cheap considering every factor. Its a must try!!
RainbowReindeerRain@reddit
You can find krémes in nearly every confectionary, as also the other two you mentioned. But unfortunarelly, you can't find the Ruszwurm krémes in other places, that was only made in that particular pastry shop. I would suggest to go to Szamos, because they have the other two type, and also some other good one (for example E80 and marczipan cake) and their krémes is close tho the Ruszwurm one (maybe the closest because the Szamos franchise owned the Ruszwurme at the last decade or so)
Intelligent-Lock8731@reddit
E80 is Auguszt’s cake
Specialist_Data4010@reddit
You have to try narancsos bukta. Its seasonal.

Ruszwurm is permanently closed.
