Its this kind of wooly thinking that makes corruption inevitable. What needs to happen is extremely HIGH wages for politicians, but with excellent oversight and standards and right of recall by the people. Fail your people, lose your job, serve your people, reap the rewards.

My understanding is that Roman consuls then went into the provinces and extracted as much as possible from the province, sometimes also benefiting their patron.

If you think politicians make most of their money through wages you would be very wrong. You can make them pay a fee for their time in office and they will still walk away richer than a fat cat caught in a fish bucket

Awful idea. Why would a highly-skilled professional take a massive pay cut to become a politician? This would further turn holding public office into an activity for the retired & wealthy instead.

Then the types of people with the skills to run a country will go to the private sector.
How about we rather give them a highish salary but tie yearly increases to the worst inflation experienced by either low income, middle income or high income segments.

Should be median wage of the area you represent. Youll then see politicians fighting for their area rather than towing the party line.
