I don't see how their windows to invade Taiwan gets better in a few years then it is right now. The US is occupied in Iran and we've burned through a shit ton of interceptors.
Average64@reddit
Trump will be president until 2029, imagine just how much worse things will get until then. China has plenty of time. They're also managed to reverse engineer the AMSL EUV machine last year, it's only a matter of time until they perfect it and scale it in their factories. After they take Taiwan, countries will be forced to buy chips from them.
Necessary_Series_740@reddit
china does not have plenty of time. they likely wanted to move a few years back but Russias failure in Ukraine and the realization that the corruption of the Chinese military was really deep likely delayed xi's move. the problem is Chinas economy is beginning to sputter and demographics are starting to hit hard. A move has to be made by 2027 or not at all. the Us is nearly done with oking a big arms package for taiwan Japan is remilitarizing. this is it. it's go time.
and yes the US is somewhat distracted right now, but with Venezuela, Iran and Russia all decapitated or diminished, china has very little help. the Iran conflict also shows how weak china is when energy is threatened.
Attacking now is there best bet while the US is low on stockpiles. even so a Taiwan attack is a likely failure. The Us does not even need to directly engage but just stand off by using nuclear subs, and simply blockade all the energy and food imports at choke points beyond china's reach. even if china is successful and they take Taiwan through war, they'll be strangled and face potential societal collapse due to lack oil and food. yes they can get it overland but a vas majority comes from overseas.
wolacouska@reddit
Lmao, they were not planning on doing it years ago. You guys listen to too much CNN scare mongering.
They don’t even have the boats to do it yet.
Necessary_Series_740@reddit
I don't watch CNN.
Ships like say these:
Type 075 landing helicopter dock which they had in 2021.
Plus they have practiced for years with commercially available jack up barges and using civilian ferries and freighters for beach landings.
Also I don't disagree that their primary goal is "peaceful" unification. my point was that if they go the route of invasion it has to be soon. it seems you aren't really keeping up with the conversation and are making a lot of assumptions.
wolacouska@reddit
They keep the option open and viable in case.
They are quickly outpacing the American navy with basically non existent shipbuilding capacity in the states, so I don’t see why this window is supposedly closing.
There’s no world where America suddenly rebounds from this war, and the idea that Chinas economy is about to collapse is a meme that goes back to the 90s. Even Trump literally came out and said recently “according to all our economists projections their planned economy shouldn’t work in theory, but it does in practice!” Lmao
PersonalHospital9507@reddit
China is thinking that Russia and USA can just go ahead and do bad shit and the world just lets them. Why wait for a "peaceful" reunification?

Signal_Researcher01@reddit
If Donald Trump said tomorrow midterms were cancelled there would be a very feisty protest next weekend. Not this weekend but the weekend after, too short notice. People would break out their cleverest signs and their silliest costumes.
In the end of course they would be clubbed senseless by gleeful police and ICE agents, and go home with great videos to share.
Liberal politicians would jockey for the microphone so they can get their turn saying how mad they are. But not too much, cause you might get sued.
It culminates in a single act of defiance by a Left wing group to stop traffic or take over some government building. The clip that goes viral is of a Big Dude in red maga cap, beating the shit out of the entire group on his own, laughing as they scream and lash out at him. One punch, and any individual member collapses, hands over their face, likely crying. Maybe the Little Guy thats always first to take a swing at a cop tries his hand, but the Big Dude doesnt notice the difference.

Mainly from here https://www.reuters.com/world/china/how-china-built-its-manhattan-project-rival-west-ai-chips-2025-12-17/
They're also manufacturing 33% of the mature 28nm and above nodes available globally. https://www.semiconductors.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/SIA_TradeInvestigation_0325_v2.pdf
tylerdred2@reddit
Impressive, but still won’t be ready until 2030. So essentially ASML has a 4-5 year lead.
Average64@reddit
Sure, but that doesn't mean they have to wait until then. They can take Taiwan and put the prototype into production afterwards. It's only a matter of securing the components they can't produce.
tylerdred2@reddit
Agree. If China takes Taiwan and decides to use TSMC to throttle leading edge chip production, the dynamic completely changes. There would be massive disruption to the chip manufacturing industry with enormous ripples throughout the global economy. I am skeptical that china would be able to “shoe horn” in their EUV machine into existing TSMC production lines as there is famously close collaboration between the two companies, essentially a “hand in glove” type production system. Interesting aside, ASML has built self destruction mechanisms into their Taiwanese machines in the case of a Chinese seizure
Ell2509@reddit
September 2027 to apr 2028 is the best window, meteorological speaking. Tides are most suitable for landings then. They wait decades if they miss it.
Wide_Emotion_2811@reddit
Dont forget the helium shortage that will bring the chip sector to a halt anyway so the war wont effect shit economically
warriormonk5@reddit
Helium can't be stored long term without insanely expensive equipment. It's too small so it casually passes through sealed containers.
froebull@reddit
Meanwhile, I still see helium for sale at WalMart.
It's almost 60 dollars for a tank of it, but I actually can't believe that they are still selling it for birthday party balloons. We should be more serious about conserving it for actual uses.
Probably don't need to be using it in advertising blimps either.
AccordingBiscotti600@reddit
Good lord you're an idiot.
JackBlackBowserSlaps@reddit
Not an expert, but I would imagine that balloon helium and chip helium are of different purities, and possibly produced in different facilities.
GrafZeppelin127@reddit
Balloon-grade helium, or “crude” helium, is usually the recycled byproduct of other industries using helium at extremely expensive 99.999% purities.
froebull@reddit
So my concerns seem to be unfounded, I guess? I didn't know that.
GrafZeppelin127@reddit
I mean, you’re still right to be concerned. 40% of helium production coming offline from Qatar getting its shit rocked is catastrophic for applications that need helium to do things like cool powerful magnets and provide extremely chemically inert gas barriers, such as MRI machines, chip manufacturing plants, fiber optic cable production, industrial welders, etc.
In many of those applications, it literally can’t be substituted for anything else. Weather balloons, advertising blimps, and sport balloons, at least, can use other gases—hydrogen, hot air, steam, anhydrous ammonia can be and have been used before, albeit not necessarily interchangeably, depending on the balloon’s or airship’s specific design and regulations. It’s not legal to use hydrogen as a manned airship lift gas in some countries, for example, but it’s legal for manned racing balloons in other countries.

Judonoob@reddit
Theoretically, Taiwan has very good defenses. However, I’ve also read that the Taiwanese military doesn’t take things seriously and believes the US will just save them.
GuideMwit@reddit
Here come Japan who is so adamant at actively installing offensive missiles for Taiwan’s “defense”.
IrregularDoughnut@reddit
Not sure why defence is in quotes here, unless you think Taiwan are going to get collectively bored of life and decide to end it all by invading China.
GuideMwit@reddit
It’s not me. It was Japan that kept talking about remilitarization because of China’s “threat” which basically means PRC will invade ROC soooooon. So, Japan need new aircraft carriers and missiles to defend Taiwan.
Necessary_Series_740@reddit
If china does an attack on Taiwan, it likely means they will attack US bases on Japanese islands, thus dragging Japan into the fight. it's a very real scenario. probably should think or research a bit before making stupid comments. I know this is reddit but still, I'm this is pretty bad. either you are ignorant or shilling for china.
GuideMwit@reddit
And those “offensive” missiles are surely gonna protect US bases from Chinese missiles?
Necessary_Series_740@reddit
yes. offensive weapons can be defense. it's the most basic concept of deterrence. clearly we are talking at two very different levels of understanding.
Capable_Site_2891@reddit
Ahahahahhah
Talking at two different levels of understanding
ConsiderationOk614@reddit
I’d love to see you live within Chinese society lmfao the real issue is that we’ve allowed the globe to become 50% populated with people dumb enough to directly go against their self interests… congrats on making it into the club, dumbass!
IrregularDoughnut@reddit
I think it's more likely they're expecting China to try to seize it, and from there expand on their claims in surrounding seas to the point where they are directly threatening Japanese control of their own islands and waters. I doubt they'd get directly involved unless the US was directly defending Taiwan and wanted to use Japanese airstrips. Even then it's a toss up, because the US could easily abandon it all on a whim and leave them staring down an angry China.
Mrgluer@reddit
offense is defense. best way to end a fight is kicking an aggressor in the balls. wars can go perpetually if neither side starts shutting down the others production. look at ukraine and russia.
GuideMwit@reddit
Just like the US and Israel war on Iran, huh?
Mrgluer@reddit
Yup, US tried to kick Iran in the balls, but they both ended up kicking each other in the balls. Just cuz one is numb to the pain doesn't mean they're "winning". I dont think either side is winning.
River_City_Rando@reddit
Im convinced were witnessing the superpowers all conspiring against each other, and figure nuclear war is inevitable, so might as well kick it off and rule over the ashes once the dust settles. Like bring shit out of underground caches in 5-10 yrs or whatever, after a complete collapse, then rebuild humanity in a completely different and far worse situation so they can have 100% power and dominance over the remaining population. Were witnessing pure evil/pain/death take over the collective human consciousness. They know consciousness is expanding and the viel is being lifted, so they no doubt will pull the plug on the whole thing and hid in their silos with enormous military caches. They wont even need humans to operate it, were at the point now that countries are racing to develop basically terminator drones.... or, maybe im crazy, who knows lol, maybe Jesus will come back to save us

Also the Taiwanese army trains/ simulates with both China and the US so whose to say they would put up a fight anyway
IrregularDoughnut@reddit
Around 90% are opposed to reunification, so it's not like they're split. But of course opposition doesn't guarantee a willingness to fight and die for it.
Ok_Caterpillar5564@reddit
They won't invade. All they need to do is wait out the US's self destruction and the fall of western hegemony, and Taiwan will turn and walk right into China's arms. Will take some time, but they can afford to play the long game (and it's not looking that long anymore).
Still plenty of reasons to do military exercises. They want to keep their military up to date on modern strategies even if they don't necessarily plan to use it. They want to show strength. But they would be stupid to invade right now, and nothing I've seen from China makes me think they're stupid.
ReasonablePossum_@reddit
Taiwan gov just meet yesterday with Xi in potential reunification talks. They probably will not need any force.
TechnologyLow5920@reddit
You sure that wasn’t the opposition leader who holds no power in the Taiwanese government?
ReasonablePossum_@reddit
Thats still the government. And first contact in ten years
TechnologyLow5920@reddit
The US equivalent is Ken Martin. DNC chairmen, he holds no gov power is not a US official.
The opposition party is the party not in control, so their leader would be in charge of a party but not in charge of the government in any way.
ReasonablePossum_@reddit
You don't have to be in charge to be in government, holding seats in congress is considered as being part of its machinery
TechnologyLow5920@reddit
Opp leader is not the same as holding a seat in congress. They are not part of the machine.
If they were in congress they would be a government official.
ReasonablePossum_@reddit
Their party is a considerable part of congresos as to be consideres opposition. While their themselves might not be part of the congress, they have influence in their party's biddings, and their public direction shows where the party is going.
TechnologyLow5920@reddit
Yay! Sounds like you did some research, that’s great! So now you see that your original comment claiming the Taiwanese gov met with china is not accurate.
It was the head of the opposition party who holds no government office or official position in the government.
ReasonablePossum_@reddit
The party is part of the government dude ffs.
TechnologyLow5920@reddit
You obviously don’t understand how this stuff works.
ReasonablePossum_@reddit
You obviously put way too much weight onto specific wording instead of the overall sense of whats being said.
TechnologyLow5920@reddit
The overall sense of what was said was incorrect and misleading. Words matter friend. The Taiwanese gov had no involvement, no officials from Taiwan were involved.
TechnologyLow5920@reddit
Party members are not part of the government unless they are elected to a position in the government. Which the opposition leader in Taiwan is not.
TechnologyLow5920@reddit
Incorrect. Do some research buddy.

The economy was roaring, anyone that could design a webpage was raking it in, Clinton had balanced the nation’s debt, and our gripe was how boring post-history was going to be. Electronic music was big because obviously it was “the sound of the 21st century”. It would all be over by 2001. Dotcom bust had already begun. Endless wars. Offshoring. Enshittification. Everything since has been steep decline, even though personally I have done okay. This nation is absolutely fucked with no end in site. Then there is the Taiwan Strait, see below.
Excerpt from December 2024 article: https://www.thescxchange.com/finance-strategy/plan/supply-chains-taiwan-china-conflict
Let’s talk about the implications for shipping lanes. If you take a look at the map, you realize that the Taiwan Strait is a very important shipping lane for containerized goods coming out of both China and Taiwan. If China were to institute a military blockade, how would that affect the world’s container flows?
That flow would be affected tremendously. The Taiwan Strait plays a crucial role in global shipping, particularly for goods moving between Asia and the rest of the world. It is one of the busiest shipping lanes, and any blockage would severely disrupt global container flows.
Now let me put that into perspective. Fifty percent of the world’s containerships pass through the Taiwan Strait—50%. That’s a huge number. By comparison, the Suez Canal handles about 20% of global trade. Or to use another measure: 88% of the world’s largest ships by tonnage passed through the Taiwan Strait in 2022.
oh-bee@reddit
Taiwan has enough harpoon missiles to make that a VERY bad idea. China can’t blockade Taiwan without a massive air campaign.
And the air campaign is a bad idea on the count of all the Patriot missile systems they have.
And so on.
Any aggression against Taiwan will result in a costly war for China.
JackBlackBowserSlaps@reddit
I mean, couldn’t they just go around Taiwan? It’s not like the strait, where there is only one way.
