Update to the Huion wayland discussion

it seems that they've changed their tune a bit from the initial "advice" of just rolling back to x11 on distros that don't have that as an option as I've posted earlier yesterday and have gotten this a response to my pushback. So hey! that's good news! Now here's hoping that they follow through!
ucsilahsor@reddit
OpenTabletDriver is reliable nowadays, for 6.7 or 6.8 they added wheel support for some Huion tablets as well, so now it should be feature complete. Still, it's nice to have the official support route
jmartecep@reddit
Huge question for you. can you provide a play by play on how to configure OpenTabletDrive on Fedora?
countChaiula@reddit
I'm using a Kamvas Pro 19 on Fedora for the last few months. I didn't do any configuration at all, I just plugged it in and it started working.
pomcomic@reddit
The instructions are literally on their website: https://opentabletdriver.net/Wiki/Install/Linux
Goaty1208@reddit
They added wheel support??? Finally. I hope that they support my tablet...
n1kzt7r@reddit
This. I had to run Ubuntu X11 for the longest time because the Huion driver couldn't deal with pen buttons and secondary clicks. Last week I randomly tried OpenTabletDriver again and it worked perfectly. Everything works just as expected. I purged Huion's software instantly.
egorechek@reddit
Can't you just use a mature DE and input remapper
lorenzo1142@reddit
kde is mature, yet is dropping x11....
egorechek@reddit
So they can focus on Wayland which is getting all the new features like better multi-monitor setup, HDR, high-dpi and more performant (unless you use xwayland). X11 was in maintenance mode for a long time and won't see any improvements in the future.
lorenzo1142@reddit
imagine having options in the linux ecosystem
the_abortionat0r@reddit
Because the project is dead and the changes broke x11 even harder.
If X11 was magically fixable then why has XLibre done nothing the last year? Their greatest claim to x11 being modern was them trying to bypass x11 to get HDR video to work.
Get your water tested dude.
lorenzo1142@reddit
you are wrong, the last commit to xlibre was yesterday and the last release was last week.
the_abortionat0r@reddit
Because x11 is dead.
lorenzo1142@reddit
it's not dead, but those in power are trying to kill it.
lorenzo1142@reddit
still running x11 here, because it works.
the_abortionat0r@reddit
Nobody cares. Not sure why you think using x11 makes you strong or something. You bringing bayblades to your middle school classes too?
lorenzo1142@reddit
imagine having options.. that was a thing once.
Ok-Review9023@reddit
Proof that cyberbullying corporations into adopting modern standards actually works. Thank you for your service
GodsBadAssBlade@reddit (OP)
I dont take enjoyment from it, I just want my products to work damngit :(
FattyDrake@reddit
You also need to get on System 76's case about adding tablet support to Cosmic. The one you own is already supported via libwacom and currently works on KDE and Gnome.
ExistingSelection180@reddit
GodsBadAssBlade@reddit (OP)
I have contributed to anothers ticket here
KnowZeroX@reddit
It's hard to say, often times a person asks support and level 1 support gives standard responses. When you push, they then go ask level 2 support who is more in the know of what is happening in the company.
Of course it never hurts to try as they do keep track of customer demand. Just important not to cross the line.
gmes78@reddit
Also, removing shit actually works. I really doubt they would've cared if Ubuntu wasn't removing the X11 session entirely in 26.04.
GodsBadAssBlade@reddit (OP)
Big time, especially since ubuntu is their primary audience target
Lousy_Hunter@reddit
Why do you ignore the fact you absolutely don't even need to use their Driver? Or that your entire issue is Cosmic DE and NOT Huion or its driver.
I have tested both the Kamvas 13 and Kamvas 24 Pro models from your same 2020 model year and both work OOTB on KDE and Gnome so i find it really strange you insist that you need Huion drivers or open tablet driver when you dont.
You just need a DE that isn't brand new, KDE even specifically revamped their tablet support a year or so ago.
GodsBadAssBlade@reddit (OP)
Well geez hunter, im sorry i have a preference. If you'd look at my previous post about this you'd see in the comments that I have tried opentablet and still need to figure it out. Even though you are probably right on it not being huions issue you cant deny that more support(even as flimsy as it may or may not be) is better than being told "mmmm sorry sweety gotta uproot yourself" I'm not sorry for not having the technical knowhow and the confidence to switch DEs, I'm a smoothbrain working with what I got and in my lane that I've done plenty of exploring in. Congrats on being able to successfully do things that i struggle with, i guess. Anyways, I'd understand if pop os was in the fringes of the OS market but its not, sure statistically speaking its not very big but its still a non negligible amount. Now if i was on... mmmm lets say hannah montana os and begging, suuuuuuuure, id be a bit of a prick crying wolf for driver support on something so niche, but im not. Im just asking for support for a newish compositor that is slowly overtaking x11, if not for official support on my own os, then at least the community as a whole. Is that such a bad thing??
onlysubscribedtocats@reddit
It very much is. Most flavour-of-the-month Linux distributions are. There are a lot of young people on social media who distro-hop like crazy to all these small-ish derivative distributions.
In Pop!_OS' case, it doesn't help that they ship an alpha-quality desktop environment.
Just use Ubuntu or Fedora tbh. These distributions are massive, and actually really good. So many bad experiences with Linux can be solved simply by running a well-supported set-up instead of a niche one.
Sure, that's good, but nobody is contesting this.
Linuksoid@reddit
well then don't complain if your stuff doesn't work because you chose a brand new DE with poor support because of "preferences"
GodsBadAssBlade@reddit (OP)
Hey, did you even read my other response? You don't need to be a knob about it. Like I said, I can wait, I just wanted to rise awareness about it.
Linuksoid@reddit
No need to raise "awareness" abt it. Cosmic is currently quite broken since its a new DE (I don't think its even 1.0 ready, despite System46s claims), of course it has bugs everywhere. In other news, water is wet
GodsBadAssBlade@reddit (OP)
Ah so next time I see something I should just pipe down because its something the someone else has probably noted down. Got it. Thank god youre not my doctor
Linuksoid@reddit
No. Next time you should post it in their bug report tracker and not post it here lmao
GodsBadAssBlade@reddit (OP)
I did, to both parties
Linuksoid@reddit
That's good to hear then! Keep us updated if the bug gets fixed
GodsBadAssBlade@reddit (OP)
Will do
yebyen@reddit
"don't complain" "don't be a knob" lol I agree with you fwiw but this a very Reddit conversation. I read somewhere that they actually did a study on LLM behavior and politeness. And if you asked something to the LLM nicely, if you said "please" specifically it would placate you and dick you around, have a too long conversation that doesn't get to the point fast enough. But if you were rude, it would quickly find you the Reddit conversation where your questions are answered and send you to Reddit. Rude people go to Reddit. I made up this entire story. (Sadly I did not)
GodsBadAssBlade@reddit (OP)
If an llm got to the point where it had account depth and consistent character flaws(and weird grammar) like me id be shitting bricks to say the least
yebyen@reddit
Give me 30 minutes of clear recorded audio of your voice and with echokit.dev I'll get you an LLM that sounds just like you. Frillz
GodsBadAssBlade@reddit (OP)
nah, id rather you never do that. ever
yebyen@reddit
I know man. I'm afraid to answer the phone ever again!
Lousy_Hunter@reddit
Huion can't fix Cosmic DE with a driver. Wayland doesn't allow for what you're asking and Cosmic DE has to support the features for it to work.
You have no choice but to uproot yourself until Cosmic implements tablet support. You're using a fundamentally broken tool and if you want it fixed you need to talk to the cosmic folks NOT huion. If you insist on using a broken DE you'll have to wait, if you want to get work done now you either switch or don't use your tablet.
This isn't some I'm doing anything special or a driver issue, its purely Cosmic DE and won't be in a good state on it for some time. PopOS isn't fringe but the brand new DE they're writing sure is.
Tldr, Huion CANT fix it only Cosmic can due to Wayland mandating the compositor controls input. Complain to cosmic or use another DE are the only options
GodsBadAssBlade@reddit (OP)
Hey, im perfectly fine with waiting. I saw something didnt work when i needed it, made a few support tickets on both sides and decided to inform the community about it, sure its technically misinformation from my end by accident but regardless Huion's initial attitude was not winning them any favors from me as a long time customer. What matters to me as long as it eventually gets brushed up on by either side then hey, aint no harm in raising awareness(cause god knows i needed awareness when first switching to linux🙄)
2rad0@reddit
I was trying to figure out what the problem was but you never fully described it. Does the external screen not work on POPPOS, or just the input, or both?
GodsBadAssBlade@reddit (OP)
The screen itself works fine as a screen, but pen to mouse movements do not function, surprisingly the but interactions work such as the clicks of a pen or its quick buttons
2rad0@reddit
That seems like a not terribly difficult to fix problem but it's something that has to be done in the wayland compositor unfortunately. It's like the same kind of issue as having a laptop with a touchpad and plugging in an external mouse, one would expect that to work without any issues, or two USB mice, I wonder if POPPOS's wayland fails in those cases as well.
McDonaldsWitchcraft@reddit
The problem is woth Cosmic's implementation of graphic tablet mappings, not with wayland itself.
2rad0@reddit
What mappings do you speak of, if not the POPOS wayland implementation? Practically all input drivers on linux use evdev files found in
/dev/input/I'm not sure if wayland has multipointer support, but this bug could be fixed by adding some simple logic to have two different evdev files controlling the same pointer. I'm going out on a limb here and assuming the developers chose for whatever reason to never allow a hw device with relative motion (mouse) and a hw device with absolute motion (touchpad/tablet) control the same wayland pointer.Goaty1208@reddit
Well, their driver is ass anyways.
Aviletta@reddit
Um... Hum? For me their driver works great on Wayland. Unfortunately OTD still doesn't support wheel on my Kamvas 13 Gen 3 :c
McDonaldsWitchcraft@reddit
yeah, the issue in OPs case was the fault of Cosmic but Huion didn't do a great job explaining that.
ucsilahsor@reddit
It should be fixed in version 6.7 or 6.8. I had Q620m Inspiroy Dial and after installing the latest version from git, it worked
Aviletta@reddit
Ooooh, I'm gonna try -git version from AUR today then, thanks for info <3
Ozonek@reddit
Huh, I have a Kamvas 24 and when I dropped Windows and installed Nobara KDE Wayland (Fedora), it just worked instantly without installing anything, pressure, pen buttons and all.
DYHCB@reddit
Isn’t the kernel driver a thing? Ive never installed any driver and my karmas 19 pro just works, except I later have to use usev-hid-bpf to fix wrong a button value
FattyDrake@reddit
The problem OP is having is with Cosmic not having properly implemented tablets. Once they do his tablet should work, because yeah most of the Huion tablets are already supported at that level.
pomcomic@reddit
FINALLY. OpenTabletDriver is also working on their support for touch strips, so I'm curious which one gets to the finish line faster. Can't wait to have full functionality of my Kamvas Pro 22 again, that's about the only (partial) hardware incompatability I still face on Linux.
