what we've all known for quite a while now...
Tchaik748@reddit
Screw the Adelsons.
Comet7777@reddit
All my homies hate the Adelsons
Zestyclose-Finish778@reddit
Fatprick Dumont and his vile mother in law can go back to where they came from.
darkhorse21980@reddit
Wouldn't it be nice if they took over the incoming Vegas franchise and Cuban got the Mavs back?
jraymcmurray@reddit
Cuban isn't innocent in any of this. He chose Jason Kidd without fielding any other candidates, he hired Nico without looking at anyone else, he sold to the Adelson's without letting anyone else bid, he said he was selling to them because they're real estate people implying heavily he was also planning on the stadium moving. He's a nice guy but he was never a great owner. Not to mention the whole Pants DJ thing. Brunson happened under his watch and KP too.
Tchaik748@reddit
Of course he isn't.
This is why we need to develop class solidarity, because the billionaires sure as shit have it.
jraymcmurray@reddit
Preach
mvsr990@reddit
So Irving told them to pound sand (coughcough) and now they'll try to get their casino through the Dallas City Council (assuming Miriam can buy off enough of the Lege finally)?
Acreativeusername69@reddit
No casino, Abbot and Paxton won’t budge on it.
mvsr990@reddit
Paxton's about to have no role in state government. Abbott can definitely be bought off but he can't really stop it anyway.
If you were going to point to one Republican as a meaningful obstacle, it's Dan Patrick. It's a battle between the far right true believers/Christian nationalists and run of the mill GOP grifters - and I'm never going to count the latter out completely.
FIalt619@reddit
I’m with the Christian nationalists on this one actually. Fuck the Adelsons, and supporting gambling at scale is actually a bad policy. Those companies are predatory, and we don’t need to support addictive behaviors that make these predatory companies profit off people’s misery.
medisamurai@reddit
you realize you can bet on the color of the sky on your phone? at this point you dont need a casino to get addicted to gambling. i hate the adelsons and the mavs but at this point we might as well get a Casino and something open 24 hours to lure tourists in at this point.
FIalt619@reddit
Maybe I’m old man yelling at clouds at this point, but I still hope the prediction markets get reined in. 20 years ago, people were playing online poker on sites with foreign servers, and the government did actually rein that in and turn it into a much riskier, more niche activity. I hope something similar happens to the prediction markets, but they’re already way bigger than online poker ever was.
medisamurai@reddit
i think its awful but i have no faith the U.S. can be turned around. sorry for being an old pessimist, as the kids say, we're cooked.
I think Dallas is desperate at this point to get anything to stay here and quit losing to the suburbs and they need to rebrand south dallas like they did with uptown and have an anchor for that area.
They really should have just kept the city hall as a reference to Robocop because downtown dallas will be detroit in 20 years when everything moves 20-40 minutes from downtown. Maybe its just destiny
HoneyIShrunkMyNads@reddit
I truly don't care if people gamble or not, but I'm so done with draft kings ads that I'll fight against for it to be legal here lmao
SadatayAllDamnDay@reddit
They have one legistlative session left before it's over for their timeline.
MC_chrome@reddit
If enough people get out and vote this November, Greg Abbott won’t be in office next year to screw with things
darkhorse21980@reddit
The office of Governor is intentionally written to be very powerless. Abbott only exists to...well, I don't want another Reddit ban so I won't go further. Lt. Governor is the most powerful position in Texas, so Dannie Goeb holds the cards here.
MC_chrome@reddit
Yes and no. A Democratic governor could veto lots of shitty bills Republicans pass & they wouldn’t be able to do anything about it.
Plus, the governor can call the legislature back into session whenever they want
dchirs@reddit
The Adelsons are here exactly to build a casino.
Abbott and Paxton are unscrupulous.
Get real.
Crying_in_99Ranch@reddit
They'll budge based on whoever is paying them more
MrTacocaT12345@reddit
Can somebody explain to me like I am a 5-year-old whhst is wrong with the current AAC site?
dchirs@reddit
No casino.
That's basically it. The Adelsons want a custom-built property to generate money for them.
Their preference is that casino complex be on the current site of City Hall.
Vampires from Las Vegas here to take our city's money.
MrTacocaT12345@reddit
Wait, is gambling now legal within the city limits?
dchirs@reddit
Gambling is not currently legal in Texas, but the Adelsons are spending tens of millions of dollars lobbying for it in Austin.
ReserveFormal3910@reddit
The real billionaire power movers Dunn and them are far right religious zealots and won't ever let casino go up for a vote.
dchirs@reddit
You certainly may be right about that, but the Adelson plan is very clearly use the basketball team to get the gambling district. So if there's no casino, it's not because they didn't want it.
ReserveFormal3910@reddit
There's a reason why they quickly pivot away from the irving site where they outright owned the land and are now in downtown. They saw that they were getting nowhere with gambling no matter how much they were paying the lobbyists to get it on the ballot.
YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
No, it is not
SadatayAllDamnDay@reddit
Ross Perot Jr owns most of the developable land around the AAC. And most of that land he either won't sell or can't due to what he's done with it.
CommanderSquirt@reddit
Perot Sr was cooler.
medisamurai@reddit
Rick Welts and his 'convo' with ken tolbert is such a bad attempt at lying.
nesguy1@reddit
Crazy to think that Texas will EVER allow casinos in the state. Ain’t happening. Lobbies from Oklahoma and Louisiana will ensure that it won’t happen.
medisamurai@reddit
lobbies and our own Texas and Dallas corrupt politicians
greencheeseplz@reddit
It’s not for an “arena” it’s for a casino. The arena part is only to get people to the casino. They must be quite convinced gambling will get legalized at some point.
Ok-Goal-8767@reddit
SELL THE TEAM.
medisamurai@reddit
and there ya have it. it was so transparent. Dallas will always suck.
IranianLawyer@reddit
Are they just on a mission to decimate the City of Dallas?
Aoostin@reddit
Why is this so hated? it should breathe life into a dying building
omgfloofy@reddit
It's not breathing life into a building. The city has been talking about demolishing it.
_Blitzer@reddit
A portion of the city council and the city manager have been using a secretive and highly questionable process and set of data to "justify" abandoning the building. Wouldn't say "the city has been talking about it". More like "the city's being misled about it"
omgfloofy@reddit
I'm not meaning the general public by 'the city.' I was meaning city council and the manager by 'the city.' So my point still stands.
dchirs@reddit
Buildings don't die.
The Mavs owners are trying to steal millions - probably billions - from the city.
That's why it's hated.
uncookednoodle69@reddit
how do we get the adelsons to go back to vegas or israel
Decapitat3d@reddit
Wankers
Kirjath-Sepher@reddit
As long as it’s not a casino, which doesn’t looks likely to be legalized, I’m fine with it. We still have the Meyerson and Fountain Place, designed by IM Pei. Subjective, but they are both far more aesthetically pleasing to me. City hall is still impressive and it would be sad to see it go. The Mavs would serve the metroplex in no better place than downtown or victory park.
madster40@reddit
And in 20 years they’ll want another new arena and this time the abandoned arena will not be at the edge of downtown, but right in the middle. The old Reunion arena area is still not redeveloped and Victory park will be dead without any sports team in the AAC.
Patrick42985@reddit
The whole wanting a new arena every 20 years or so stuff is so annoying to me. The AAC opened in 2001. It’s not like it was built in the 70’s or early 80’s. It’s in a convenient location both for driving and public transportation. They should just renovate it if they think it’s that bad. Like if they just want their casino, just be fully transparent but don’t frame it like the AAC is this decrepit outdated building either.
Staples Center (not calling it crypto arena) which I grew up going to regularly opened in 1999. It’s perfectly fine. They’ve done small renovations here and there but there’s no need to replace it.
Madison Square Garden opened in the late 60’s and is still held in very high regard. It’s had a few renovations over the years but they would never think about leaving the Garden.
The united center where the Bulls play opened in 1994. You never hear any new arena talk from them.
NTXGBR@reddit
MSG could use a rehab, but that's about it. This has nothing to do with the arena itself. This has everything to do with the fact that Mark Cuban didn't like sharing an arena with the Stars. He has attempted to bully them at absolutely every turn, and only sold to the people he did because he thought they would get the arena deal done, and help him continue to try to swing his dingus at the Stars. The man SEETHES that he can't deck the AAC out strictly in Mavericks stuff. That is quite literally the only reason this is happening.
madster40@reddit
Exactly. Plus in my view the AAC is a beautiful arena and with some renovations inside it could last another 2 decades. Victory Park FINALLY is not an empty parking lot anymore and now we want to abandon it?
Patrick42985@reddit
Yeah I don’t get the thinking at all. I like the AAC. I like what they’ve done with victory park as well. It’s perplexing to me. Same with the idea of the Stars possibly moving to Plano. The AAC is perfectly fine to me.
_Blitzer@reddit
I’m against it because I do not believe any of this moves ahead without the taxpayers getting shafted. We’re already in a bad spot with those dumbass city charter amendments regarding police funding. Saddling the city’s finances with even more debt when the current building can be made to work for way less than the absurdly false $1B figure…. I just don’t see it making sense.
Our pockets are being emptied so the adelsons can fill theirs, IMO
YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
Yeah that’s the biggest rub for me. If I thought the city could get a square deal on the property and maybe a bit more to build new digs, and if I thought the Mavs would finance their new stuff privately, well okay. That’d be fine by me. But I fear we’re gonna get a raw deal if this goes through, not only on the sale of the site but also on wherever government operations end up (probably a lease in some mid building) and also on various expensive economic development incentives with questionable ROIs.
_Blitzer@reddit
100%. (Someone downvoted you - I ctrl+z'd that sucker)
dchirs@reddit
"far more aesthetically pleasing"
This isn't about aesthetics.
This is about tearing down a Dallas civic building to further enrich highly unscrupulous multi-billionaires ($40b+) from Las Vegas.
dchirs@reddit
This is 100% about building a casino though. Are you not watching or are you choosing to not look?
IFlyAircrafts@reddit
I don’t get why this thread is so negative. I hate the Adelsons just as much as everyone else. But it’s nice to see that one of our “Dallas” sports teams will actually play in Dallas.
kabob21@reddit
American Airlines Center is already Dallas in Victory Park near the Design District.
Fournier_Gang@reddit
And it's also one of the most accessible from public transport as well.
Bubbly-Television-63@reddit
Aside from the two that already do?
NTXGBR@reddit
Cuban has been pushing this for years. The whole reason he even sold was so these people would come in with what he thought would be enough firepower to get it done. The blame for all this asinine stupidity rests solely on the shoulders of Mark Cuban. The only thing he didn't want from the Adelson's dipshittery was trading Luka. Other than that, his plans have been attempted exactly as he wanted.
ContextWorking976@reddit
Our local politicians and business leaders need to fear prison more.
arlenroy@reddit
Kind of hard when they're paying each other off, unless they start venturing into federal financing (which they're fleecing the city, not the government), I doubt they'll face any consequences. This is a prime example of why Cuban sold the Mavericks, he loved that fucking team, it was his heart and soul. Unfortunately, he knew for them to be competitive to host events (Final Four, All-Star Game) they needed a new arena. We're in a bizarro timeline where top 5 market teams building new arenas every 20 years, the AAC can't compete with the new building the Lakers or Warriors play in, hell I'm surprised they haven't tried to build another MSG at this point. Cuban knew this, knew the shady shit it would take to get a deal done, and didn't want any part of that. Not just from a legal standpoint but from a moral standpoint. I'd reckon 2029 we'd see a new arena open, maybe 2030 depending on the size.
SadatayAllDamnDay@reddit
Cuban sold because he thought they could make the casino thing happen.
Delicious_Hand527@reddit
Exactly! We only win these things via serious economic bribes, which means they are probably net losses for the city (though individuals and individual hotels, etc may come out ok).
PossiblyAChipmunk@reddit
What is the AAC and the surrounding area missing? It still feels great inside. Is it just because there aren't as many suites and other "premium" seating options? Why should the average fan or voter care about that?
SadatayAllDamnDay@reddit
It's not about the arena. It's about the land around the arena.
ContextWorking976@reddit
Ok they need a new stadium. They can do that without fraud and corruption. The blatant fraud scheme the Admesone are trying to pull off with city hall is the problem, not a new stadium.
TheGringoOutlaw@reddit
Make the proposed arena look like city hall you cowards.
bastardradio@reddit
But we have COOP now it’s okay! COOP is here!!1 that means they’re okay now! /s
anotrZeldaUsrna@reddit
Z*onist freaks and grifters.
MrBaDonkey@reddit
The only thing the city should be giving the Adelsons is a kick in the ass out of town.
boxwhitex@reddit
And everyone here is going to help pay for it. Even though there are a million other things the community needs more.
renothedog@reddit
Logistically it would be an absolute nightmare to get to
ssterp@reddit
Out of the loop on the topic, what’s the TLDR?
dchirs@reddit
The Adelsons bought the Mavs two years ago in order to build a casino in Texas.
They traded Luka to save money last February.
This year the want to put their casino on the property currently occupied by City Hall.
City Manager Kim Tolbert and over half of the Council is working together to give the billionaires another handout.
OutlawSundown@reddit
Makes it pretty clear the push to replace city hall had nothing to do with renovation costs and eveeything to do with this.
KarmaLeon_8787@reddit
This whole thing is so Dallas. Tear down City Hall to build a sports arena. SMH
