My grandma kept this in her camper for when we went to the beach (she herself I think used suave in her home shower but I had a lot of hair) and she swore left and right that this would take the salt out of my hair at the beach campground showers and boy do I remember being in those cold-to-tepid tiled punch button showers with her scrubbing the life out of my hair and then drenching with the conditioner and using her 90’s teal and pink thick tooth comb through my hair. And to be really fair to her, I was just walking around with a luscious mane once it dried. A little air frizzled, but that shit was healthy.

I remember one day I had a super knot she couldn’t get out so she shouted at my grandpa at the shower next to us, wrapped me up, and I stood in the dying sun while he hummed an opera that had been on the radio. He did a tug with the comb and then just said a bunch of words, moved a bunch of hair, went back to humming, went “ohhhoh, that the guy” hummed the big finale, twisted my hair in his fingers, and then ran the comb down three times clean and said “alright, you’re good!”

I asked him later how he did it, I had chronically knotty hair, and he said “when you work with fishing line, you have to work with it, not against it. I just did the opposite of the knot.” Which to this day tells me nothing about hair knots on my own head but does tell me everything about the knots on others.
