Am I alone in my anger for never landing on the aircraft carrier?

Ishvale@reddit
I was the designated lander in my friend group
Garf_artfunkle@reddit
I think being pissed off about this is how the Angry Video Game Nerd started his whole career
ultramagnes23@reddit
Playing Top Gun with the Power Glove is like puking on shit.
IceWaLL_@reddit
I can land its that damn refueling plane that i cant do.
SELECTaerial@reddit
I remember refueling successfully once. Once. And died almost immediately after lol
toast79@reddit
Yep, exactly the same. I think it might be the most frustrating NES game we owned.
IceWaLL_@reddit
I literally tried last night. I was that bored and i landed but that damn refueling plane.
Left left up slow down! Right speed up left left slow down speed up..... Annnnd its gone!
AnneBeretRamsey@reddit
I gotta make myself a mental note to watch somebody successfully play this game.
I had this flight simulator computer game where I was able to successfully land the first mission maybe half the time, and then the second round would be a combat one and I'd either get shot down or run out of fuel trying to locate the aircraft carrier.
decoy79@reddit
This is what remember the most.
Knotar3@reddit
That's pretty much all I remember of the game. Pretty sad I could even today find all erdrick's armor if I picked played dragon warrior from memory, but refueling that dam plane seemed impossible.
ARCHA1C@reddit
Apparently the game manual tells you exactly what your avionics need to be showing to land successfully.
BaWeepGranaWeep@reddit
AVGN did an episode on this, the instructions the game gives you like “pull up!” are wrong. Once you understand the actual controls it’s possible.
Accadius@reddit
Didnt he try it with the power glove and succeeded?
BaWeepGranaWeep@reddit
I don’t remember that one but he definitely hated the glove lol
Accadius@reddit
I dont remember if it was the top gun episode or the power glove episode but I remember it being another you can just walk over it type of reaction from the nerd lol
BaWeepGranaWeep@reddit
By “walk over it” are you referring to that one level in NES TMNT?
Accadius@reddit
Yes it was like that type of reaction
BillBrasky1179@reddit
I wasn’t consistent, but I landed on the carrier more than not.
CRAYONSEED@reddit
What is the handheld?
Sad_Training_1595@reddit (OP)
It is called the Miyoo A30. Awesome for NES but can play all kinds of games up to Playstation 1.
CRAYONSEED@reddit
Cool thx
Psychological-Let-90@reddit
I hated the asteroid field level from Star Wars more. I could vibe my way onto the carrier occasionally and feel like I did it on purpose, but I could never get past those asteroids without just completely winging it.
Formal-Cut-4923@reddit
In my 40’s still have original NES. Still cannot land on that damn carrier.
moles-on-parade@reddit
StrangeBadgerTX@reddit
Maybe I'm a little bit older, but this game is cute compared to Dan Kitchen’s Tomcat: The F-14 Fighter Simulator - Atari 7800. Most kids couldn't even make it off the carrier. Then you have to missile lock some fools, find your way back before you run out of gas, and land on the carrier. Absolutely merciless.
orielbean@reddit
Captain Skyhawk was another brutal one, all terrain all day while playing bullet hell and all the shapes/colors are really similar.
Protoman@reddit
Too soon, man. Too soon.
jimmythesaint83@reddit
For real, let’s talk about Afterburner instead.
daveygoboom@reddit
Fuuuuuu...
Mikey-2-Guns@reddit
You need the power glove!
moles-on-parade@reddit
I had one! My folks got it for me for Christmas when I was maybe nine. It sucked, so they took it back and I got a Lego Futuron monorail instead. Solid trade. (I was lucky as hell.)
onion4everyoccasion@reddit
RogowskiCoil@reddit
I had that monorail! I loved it so much.
SpiralOutski@reddit
It’s so…bad
llllilllllll@reddit
I knew I'd find this in here somewhere
Hot-Parsley-6193@reddit
Title screen music for this is an absolute banger
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lStIZXiSeuI&list=RDlStIZXiSeuI&start_radio=1
1877KlownsForKids@reddit
The NES one far superior. I am admittedly very biased.
https://youtu.be/Vg5h85k42jU?si=sYIoCVyAhg0Tjjj6
sports_night@reddit
After both watching the original movie and playing the NES game so much as a kid, when that theme started again at the opening of Top Gun: Maverick… chills.
instant_ragret@reddit
All day!
DavePeesThePool@reddit
It's quite good. Though they missed a huge opportunity to not just compose a digital version of highway to the danger zone... or at least of the movie's actual theme music that was used in the NES version.
I mean they already had a licensed game that even used a digitized representation of tom cruise with kelly mcgillis on the splash screen.
jtmag1@reddit
They did, I never heard this before and I've played this game a thousand times.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzyDtrj-11Q
DavePeesThePool@reddit
Yes, that's the NES version, which I mentioned.
jtmag1@reddit
What the hell is this?
The title screen music for this is the music from the movie.
Far_Talk_74@reddit
Story of my life in this game.
Verbull710@reddit
This happened a few times and then one time the jet sailed on over the boat and I then realized you can actually land if you follow the directions lol 😆
wpotman@reddit
Yes and no. The directions are misleading at best. There is a reliable way, but Nintendo Power described it much better than the in-game directions.
Verbull710@reddit
Eh i dunno, i figured it out after that
Harlockarcadia@reddit
Every. Damn. Time.
2ndprize@reddit
I expected multiple takes of different crashes
Kert317@reddit
I only played the game once.
I did my flying on the C64 and in DOS
Possible-Tangelo9344@reddit
I fucking hate this game and anyone who made it
HomelessKitchenCat@reddit
Seriously whoever made this game is a straight masochist. One of the few NES games i had where i experienced absolutely zero fun
_mersault@reddit
So… there’s a trick. And the trick is to ignore all the visual guidance and vibe your way in. Once you get it, you have it, but fuck them for making in game feedback that makes the game impossible until you I got it
MrElJerko@reddit
Yeah, I remember getting pretty good at landing. I think you just had to keep the nose pointed slightly up and slow the plane down.
onion4everyoccasion@reddit
Let go, Luke
jekyl42@reddit
Yeah, and I think it's a big part of the reason I've never seen Top Gun.
<> <> <> *crash into ocean*

Thank you for sharing. At least I know I am not alone wallowing in my hatred and bitterness. 😂

Failure to land was never your fault.
Roklam@reddit
Some claim to have done it
Shigglyboo@reddit
it was way too hard. I got over it and played other games.
FigNewton555@reddit
When I finally landed it I turned off the system, removed the cart, never played it again. I did the thing, I’m done.
AnneBeretRamsey@reddit
Borrowing NES games from a friend's collection over a weekend was always the best because most NES games are crap that will only hold your attention for so long. They can't all be Legend of Zelda. Most were crap. I'm looking at you, Skate or Die!
spoung45@reddit
I have landed a few times.
kombatminipig@reddit
After many years I finally figured it out and landed, only to discover the refueling stage.
NPC261939@reddit
I played that game dozens of times as a kid. I managed to land on the carrier twice. I don't know how I did it honestly.
PopularPlankton3948@reddit
This game fucking cheated
Additional_Egg7024@reddit
TheOsirisOfThisShit_@reddit
Try it again. It's not that hard. It's just hard for 8 year olds.
einTier@reddit
I could never do it as a child.
As an adult with experience with aircraft it’s quite easy.
Bitching Betty isn’t useful. You need to watch your altitude and speed and understand how pitching up (climbing) slows you down and pitching down (diving) speeds you up. It’s basically like going up hill or down hill in a car except you don’t have brakes, only a throttle.
2ndprize@reddit
Lies
DavidForPresident@reddit
You match your speed and altitude to the speed and altitude it says to match...don't pay attention to what the screen is telling you to do.
It was impossible for me for a very long time until I heard that somewhere, now I can land the plane consistently.
TheOsirisOfThisShit_@reddit
Go play it. I did it with no problem.
RiverRunsBlueHydra@reddit
Match the numbers that are on the screen. Keep the plane centered. (hint: this is a bad game that only looks good through nostalgia glasses)
Gamestonkape@reddit
I played the first level of this game like a hundred time and landed maybe 3.
Cute_Marzipan_4116@reddit
It was like the ET game from Atari. No one ever got past the first mission.
nerdylegofam@reddit
The neighbor kid used to always ask me to land the plane for him.
Psychological-Bee702@reddit
I actually landed quite a few times, but: I never beat a single NES game. (And only one SNES game: Act Raiser.)
TollyVonTheDruth@reddit
Maybe. I got good at landing. My frustration was with the damn mid-air fueling. It was like the fueler ran of patience while saying, "Wow! You really suck at this. I'm gonna go now. Good luck."
WasteOfBerries@reddit
I'll tell you the secret to land it if you tell me the best way to buy that.
DifficultMinute@reddit
F117 is the superior nes fighter plane game.
TurtleSandwich0@reddit
Match the numbers on the left of the screen with the numbers in the bottom middle of the screen.
kmmccorm@reddit
It could not be easier. Recently won a bet with a friend who had a NES and this game. Landed it first try like it was decades ago.
hammysandy@reddit
Never figured this out as a kid who always crashed the damn thing, but once you know to ignore the drunk idiot yelling instructions at you from the tower and just match up the numbers it's actually pretty easy to land.
theUmo@reddit
There's a whole video on it. They Lied to You in Top Gun — Why Landing Was Never Your Fault - YouTube
YourGuyK@reddit
I was able to make it to the final level at least once, so I cant join you in that particular anger.
dexbadger@reddit
Never did
tatanutz@reddit
Good luck refueling mid flight.
This_Fkn_Guy_@reddit
Nope
iambarrelrider@reddit
Worse game I ever bought.
ManiacRichX@reddit
I only did it when i was a kid, and only because i had Nintendo Power.
neon_farts@reddit
I could do things in video games as an 8 year old that would completely astonish me today.
ManiacRichX@reddit
I'm a gamer still, some games are even harder now, but i game to have fun, so i skip those now cause i just find them frustrating and not fun.
neon_farts@reddit
That’s fair, I’m still a gamer too and I just don’t have the time to grind some boss till I get it
JWWBurger@reddit
My college buddies and I would play the hell out of this in the dorm, and we eventually could land with ease. Ever play the less iconic but superior NES sequel?
often_awkward@reddit
I got really good at landing on the aircraft carrier I also didn't have many friends.
Foxmatrix250@reddit
I figured it out in 4-5 tries ... you must experiment and its a learning process
PinotFerret@reddit
To landing sequence!
Also, when I’m driving and someone slides in behind me and I catch it in my rear view mirror…I always think of the enemy in this game.
jamlog@reddit
It's not that hard. You just have to keep practicing from age 6 to age 22 and it's no problem.
RattusNikkus@reddit
When I was seven one of my best friends moved across the country to Missouri. He gave me Top Gun as a parting gift.
Only when I got home and played it did I realize he was never my friend...
manfromfuture@reddit
I did it a few times but it seemed like there was no rhyme or reason to it.
gfunk1369@reddit
I recently watched a Youtube video that detailed exactly how to do this 100% of the time and it's not even hard. I even tried it on an emulator and was shocked at how stupid easy it was. Even the aircraft refueling sections, STUPID EASY. The 8 year old me is silently raging.
Lucky_Louch@reddit
never once.... so many attempts as a kid I later learned how it was supposed to be done but in the 80's it was just impossible.
charutobarato@reddit
And yet I still fired it up all the time to play one level
seaderforge@reddit
Ricanzanity@reddit
No. I think avgn summed up all of our anger with this game
BoxFinancial9005@reddit
Fast tap left left right right up up but down down too low up up fuckkkkk
Efficient-Log-4425@reddit
Guys, it shows the speed and altitude you need. Look at the indicators, not the carrier.
Nwsamurai@reddit
The screen would flash to tell you what to do, but I couldn't tell if it meant to hold down the button, or tap the button repeatedly, and the instruction manual was zero help.
Ultimately it didn't matter. Tried both, still crashed.
scratchfury@reddit
This video explains why no one could get it right:
https://youtu.be/8mnLpzpD5cg
R34ct0rX99@reddit
There was a video done on that recently.
rjcpl@reddit
I didn’t have any real problems with it. But I was an Air Force brat playing flight simulators with dad dating back to the Intellivision and Apple II.
thunderlips36@reddit
This is something that I never understood. After like the second time I tried it, I almost never missed it. You just had to follow the speed and altitude and it was quite easy to do.
Accadius@reddit
I never had top gun but I had a game called captain skyhawk and it was a lot better. My friend that had top gun always wanted to swap games for the weekend.
fromthedarqwaves@reddit
I don’t remember the game play but I was stoked to play that game. I remember when and where i first played it.
VectorJones@reddit
At some point I figured it out, but it took a long time. That whole game was just sadistic.
jbenze@reddit
I did it once as a kid just randomly mashing buttons. I could never reproduce it.
thewalruscandyman@reddit
You are not, friend. You are not.
GravyPainter@reddit
There were a few Nintendo games I just said fuck off to. I never got past the grassy beginning area in the first final fantasy. I just walked around and my health dwindled down from multiple random encounters until I died.
Toppdeck@reddit
Turns out that the game gives you exact speed and altitude instructions to land the plane, you just need to ignore the flashing text telling you to "UP!! UP!!" "DOWN!! DOWN!!" "SPEED UP!!" "SPEED DOWN!!"
AintKnowShitAboutFuk@reddit
Was this in the manual or is there any way you woukd have known back then without help?
Spare-Good-5372@reddit
Not fucking once, but my brother did
Corn_Beefies@reddit
I remember my friend had the sequel and it was not an issue, they must have changed or improved it.
pct2daxtreme@reddit
Only did it once on accident.
Ok_Percentage5157@reddit
Oh hell no you're not. So incredibly frustrating. I was at a friend's house and watched them land one, and I thought he was a fucking wizard.
rwa2@reddit
I could land this and the one at the air and space museum in DC because I had learned the one counterintuitive trick all pilots must learn to line up ILS: control airspeed with pitch, and control altitude with throttle.
Gingerman424@reddit
I landed that shit most of the time. I shoulda been a pilot.
neon_farts@reddit
Let’s buzz the tower
nampezdel@reddit
“Negative, Ghost Rider, the pattern is full.”
ShyFungi@reddit
My friend’s dad could land it every time. He intentionally ignored the game’s instructions…
drewbaccaAWD@reddit
Never? I mean, it's anxiety inducing but at some point I figured it out. Too long ago now to give you any pointers though, as I'd have to relearn at this point.
LasagnahogXRP@reddit
Altimeter and wings
LasagnahogXRP@reddit
I found this game laying outside a store when I was little. Took it home. No instruction book. Never passed the level until much later when I read how to do it in a magazine.
korbendallas13@reddit
You gotta want it my friend.
weedtrek@reddit
I have landed it and refueled.
Just_call_me_Face@reddit
Speed up, speed up, speed down, speed up..
BOOM 😑
Kid's these days will never know the struggle...
