The North Yungas Road - Bolivia's famous Death Road

A few years ago, we were in Bolivia and so we had to drive our 1976 VW down the famous Death Road.
It was once one of the most dangerous routes in the world. But since a safe bypass was introduced, it's now mostly a crowded cycle pass. But saying that, if you Google bike deaths on the road and you will see that it's still claimed a fair few lives in the past 20 years.
In reality, it wasn't a dangerous drive, we didn't see another car on our entire drive. But we passed sections where we could see how sketchy it would have been if your journey led you to a section at the exact time a large truck was passing.
Desire it's history, it was a great drive, with amazing views down the valley.
This is just a little reel we made recently. We posted a long form video after driving it, but I would like to revisit the footage one day as I am a little better at editing these days 🤣
It's still a drive I would recommend to any Overlanders who finds themselves in Bolivia, despite how difficult it is to buy fuel there as a foreigner (although that seems like a global problem at the momen!)

Looks like a great drive. Can’t see much tho, due to the vertical crop.

It is a great drive, but yeah... That drops a long way down.

Do you have the link to the original video? Or is the raw footage cropped?

This is the original video we did.
Driving the Bolivian Death Road

Thanks. This looks so much better. What a scene man. I really need to start using my camera more.

We'd been wanting to drive this road since we watched the UK Top Gear guys driving many years before.
CaptainHubble@reddit
Original TopGear is responsible for me wanting to full time explore remote places and visit different countries.
KombiChronicles@reddit (OP)
Same.
We even copied them using an old rust bucket car to do it in as well ðŸ˜ðŸ¤£

Here's me driving it with one in about 2010 hand so I could film :)

Only video I took on the whole Pan-American Highway :)

The shakey camera works though... definitely makes it look more terrifying than it probably actually was 👌
grecy@reddit
It was perfectly fine... until a truck came around a blind corner towards you where it wasn't wide enough for two.

Started your new Vid posted on the YouTube yesterday! Argentina looks amazing

Ah cool.
Yeah Misiones was a cool region, gutted we didn't really get to explore it as much as we would have liked.
We're going to spend a few weeks here in Paraguay and then we have some cool places to visit in the north of Argentina.
I am particularly looking forward to visiting Puna De Atacama.

I did a motorcycle tour of Bolivia in 2021. It’s absolutely incredible there. I highly recommend visiting; especially Tarija, the salt flats, and Sucre. We didn’t do the death road but a similar road in the south heading into Tarija. One of the reasons it is so dangerous, apart from the narrow gravel roads with precipitous edges, is that the lorry drivers are all chewing cocoa leaves and drinking moonshine. Those guys are frightening.
KombiChronicles@reddit (OP)
Yeah the Bolivian love shoving coca leaves in their face.
We loved our time in Bolivia, just not the fuel situation there.

Crazy drive!

It is. Was fun though. We drove a similarwe recent drove this road in Brazil.

The road is no longer dangerous because they built a highway further inland. Since nobody drives the road anymore, it’s not as dangerous.
KombiChronicles@reddit (OP)
Yeah, that's what I wrote.
It's now used mostly for large cycling tours, although there has been so e cyclist fatalities, so it's still a dangerous road is you get something wrong.
