How bad is your commute to work? Is it to a job you like?

My commute to work involves a 5 minute walk to the bus stop, 25 minutes on the bus, then 25 mins walk to work. my job itself can be stressful and depressing at times because it's night shift security at a large residential student village. is my commute considered typical?
sossighead@reddit
Varies due to the nature of my work.
Can be as short as going from my kitchen after breakfast to my office upstairs to as long as several hours on the train to visit clients.
ChefGrouchy8538@reddit
20 minute walk to a coffee shop, for once I have a job I DON’T hate for almost £14 an hour, love it
oh_f-f-s@reddit
My commute is about 2.5 hours one way and I do it 3 times a week.
As for the job, it's this awesome combination of being simultaneously boring and stressful at the same time.
Realistic_Ad9820@reddit
I found another one! I'm also doing 2.5 hours each way 3 times a week. Would be completely unjustifiable if I wasn't being well compensated for it!
Putrid-Scientist-534@reddit
I'm in the 2.5 hours each way club as well! I'm 2 days a week however, but I don't really get paid enough to justify anymore.
WhotAmI2400@reddit
Get an escooter if you can! I went from a 30 minute walk to the train station to a 10 minute escooter ride its fun too. Though my route has an adequate bike lane and then the other half is through town where motor vehicles are banned.
InternetPerson00@reddit (OP)
i dont know which escooter to get. I Also dont trust escooter batteries not to blow up
WhotAmI2400@reddit
Yeah that’s fair. I use the rental ones so i wouldn’t know either. But if you have a reputable one (not the off brand knockoffs) the chances are slim to none.
InternetPerson00@reddit (OP)
It would have to be foldable no place to put it at home otherwise
Asher-D@reddit
Mine is 7 minute walk to bus stop, 18 minutes on the bus and 1ish minute walk to work. Why is your getting off stop so far from work? I'd there another bus you could catch?
InternetPerson00@reddit (OP)
Bus stop near work is only serviced every 30 mins, it just doesn't work.
AttorneyOk4808@reddit
5-10 minute drive.
My man who's been late everyday since I've worked there has suddenly started getting in on time, so now I reluctantly have to get in on time as well.
Telematic-aardvark@reddit
25 to 30 minute drive each way. It's to a job I tolerate, partly because it pays decently. I would like to work from home more often if I could
InvestigatorOdd5542@reddit
Half an hour walk to the station, 1hr 20 minute train ride on a good day, 10 minute walk to work. Five days a week 😭. I do really like the job, but can't cope with the commute much longer.
rj_t2@reddit
12 miles. 9 miles is motorway. I don't like my job.
namur17056@reddit
I go by train. It’s quite reliable most of the time tbh
Gadgetxx@reddit
15 minute drive with music blaring. And I don’t dislike the job
Stinkinhippy@reddit
Either 90 minutes on the A roads.. or just under an hour on the motorway.
Very happy with the job though, so all good.
buginarugsnug@reddit
My commute is great, just 10 minutes drive. My job has it's bad moments but I am mostly content there. I'd love a job I could walk to though.
I used to have a hybrid role where one day a week had a 60 minute commute, but it could easily take two hours some days if my shift was at the wrong time. I hated that job (for more reasons than the commute traffic).
griffaliff@reddit
Twenty minute drive in the morning, usually thirty going home, I don't mind my job, some days I love it, some days it's rubbish (arborist for a large local authority). I'm getting a new e bike on the cycle to work scheme next week so that will double my commute time but no more paying for diesel.
JackfruitPractical84@reddit
Door to door it’s about 1hr 20. 42-47 min train journey. Approx 10min drive to / from street parking about 6 min walk from near station and home. Did it in just under 1hr 15 yesterday.
Weary_Bat2456@reddit
30 minutes one way on a motorway for a night shift retail job that depresses me.
Electronic-Writer108@reddit
Walk to tube, jubilee line to Bond Street, change to Elizabeth line to Paddington, change to Heathrow Express!
filbert94@reddit
Previous job was about an hour each way.
Now it's 4 days WFH and then about 30-50 mins each way for another. Most days I just camp at the gym for an hour afterwards to wait out the worst of the traffic. I'd be going there anyway so get it done before home.
Have been offered full time onsite jobs for about £5k more. Not worth it. If I get calls for it I usually say start at £8k above my current salary. They get the hint.
RockAndHardPlace81@reddit
When I lived with my parents I used to walk 45 minutes to the office, overtaking the bus as traffic was always crawling. Then I moved to a commuter town and it turned into 25 minute walk to the bus, 1hr30 bus ride then 20 minutes walk to the same office. Train was only faster by 30 mins due to time between changes but at least double the price. Your commute sounds mid way between mine, not too bad. Bus time good for rest, walking good for health :)
sandstonetowers@reddit
35 minute drive, 10 minute walk.
It's fine.
No-Zombie9567@reddit
10 min walk, 35 min tube, 10 min walk. Dream Job, so the commute has never felt tiresome.
Sometimes get off the tube early to walk further home.
imtiramisu2025@reddit
It doesnt sound awful if I had to then it sounds like a commute that wouldnt put me off a role.
Im lucky that mine is a 12 minute drive and its a company and job i like.
Independent_Coast758@reddit
I feel bad saying this: I have a 7 minute bike ride to my job that I absolutely love!
I have coworkers who battle 60 minute commutes each way and see their stressed/tired faces before they even start their day.
I used to have a 40 minute (each way) drive in past. I feel like I’m in heaven now!
Needs_a_shit@reddit
Are you me? Exactly the same 12 min drive and I like my work.
Over-Treat5374@reddit
20mins drive
No-Glove4562@reddit
I drive 3 hours to work twice a month, stay out for 2 weeks at a time… and yeah I love my job
hunsnet457@reddit
Not out of the ordinary.
My commute should be the shortest commute i’ve ever had, 15 minute train, but I can count the number of times my train hasn’t been delayed or cancelled this year on one hand.
I now have to leave 40 minutes earlier to avoid being late and sit around the office for 30 minutes before it’s even worth setting up my computer.
Office is in a complete shithole town and on a street that is full of shelters where they put drug addicts, so wandering around or even just sitting outside the office is not an option.
CoffeeeGoblin@reddit
I work a 5 minute walk away from home. I work night reception at a hotel, it has its up and downs. But its a relatively chilled job for the most part. The pay is shit though.
elmo_touches_me@reddit
I work from home, but venture to the office once every couple of months.
When I took the job I was told it's 2days/week in office and did 6 straight weeks of this. Thankfully I learned they don't enforce it and we can WFH full-time if we want.
I like the job for this flexibility, because it's the only one I could get, and because it pays me enough to live comfortably.
My commute is a 15 minute walk to the train station. A 1h50m 3-leg train journey, then a 20 minute walk to the office.
It sucks, so I don't do it unless I'm asked to go in for special occasions e.g. big-wigs are visiting.
loadofnonsensical@reddit
7 miles of motorway.
It's completely random if I'm getting bumper to bumper, or a semi open road. It's guaranteed to be heavy after 0725 almost to the minute.
I like to get to work half an hour early so I can chill out in the car and think for 20 mins.
Yes it's a job if walk 7 miles for if need be. I am very fortune to have my job even if it's a physically very difficult one.
Hidden-Nugget@reddit
25 min walk to the station, 25-40min train, 15min walk to my workplace. Honestly not terrible.
Saxaphool@reddit
8 minute walk door to door.
I enjoy my job.
RuneClash007@reddit
45 minute walk in, 50 minute walk home
redseaaquamarine@reddit
Do you walk slower or is it uphill on the way home?
RuneClash007@reddit
It's actually uphill on the way to work, I'm just usually running late so have to quickstep it
Walking home I'm usually knackered haha
redseaaquamarine@reddit
😁
quite_acceptable_man@reddit
I like my job. Sometimes my commute is from the bedroom to the sofa if I'm working from home, most of the time my commute is anything from 1 hour to 3 hours depending on which site I have to visit.
My office is half an hour's drive away, so I always make sure that half an hour's driving is in my own time, the rest is on company time.
tommycahil1995@reddit
Mine used to be 10 min walk to station, 1 hour train, walk to tube station, 10 min tube, 15 minute walk. On a good day. Going back was longer because trains only left twice an hour and sometimes missed the first one
I'd say 1 hour is pretty typical tbh. Walking can be really annoying though so it probably feels worse for you
ahoneybadger3@reddit
15 minute drive on weekends, 25 minutes on average days.
It's not a bad job, pays far more for my limited skills than anywhere else and is 4 on followed by 4 off so plenty of rest days.
Free parking, free food, get to watch a couple films a night.
PKblaze@reddit
0 commute. Full work from home.
So I can't complain
Rhubarb-Eater@reddit
My commute is a ten minute cycle, or if it’s snowing I walk and it takes 30-40 minutes. I like it and I like my job a lot! I work shifts and was always adamant that I didn’t want to drive after a night shift - at least on a bike I will only hurt myself if I doze off.
Whodeytim@reddit
2 buses, about 75 mins each way.
But it's a 1 year contract that pays 3x what I've ever earnt before so I can tolerate it
insertitherenow@reddit
Seconds when I’m at home and 5 mins drive in the office. I moan about it being too much computer work but I shouldn’t. It’s well paid and nobody is trying to punch me in the face.
niteninja1@reddit
12 mins by car.
or 10 mins on a e scooter followed by 15 on a bus
Whole_Necessary2040@reddit
15min walk, 1h tube (not rush hour), 10min walk

1 min downstairs
ButterflyRoyal3292@reddit

I work from home for a job I hate. On the one hand it’s best because I don’t have to pay for travel. In the other hand I do miss having the time coming home to decompress and leave work behind. Like I’ll have a crappy day and I’ll just stomp around the house being miserable instead of getting it all out on the way home.
mrggy@reddit
Being able to walk to work is probably the best of both worlds. I'm lucky enough to be a 30 min walk from work. No commuting cost, but I still have the physical separation and time to decompress.
DaddyRAS@reddit
I'm currently in the same boat. I've been WFH for 7 years and until a year ago I had a role I loved (with some travel through COVID and beyond, just enough to take the edge off the mundane). About a year ago I moved to a different project, supposedly with a more prominent role, but it's shit and the company is in a spin and to control the budget I'm discouraged from travelling to relieve the boredom and get a different view. So I scroll through Reddit too much
WheresMyAbs98@reddit
Tip - go to the gym, decompress there and then feel good afterwards due to release of endorphins
Jasboh@reddit
Depending on the weather or if I want to go for a drink after work it's a 20 mins cycle, 30-40 mins drive or a 40 min train (20 mins of walking). I like my job
Throwaway91847817@reddit
Its a 45 minute walk each way. I enjoy it, its the best part of the day for me, especially coming home.
thenewguy22@reddit
1hr15-1hr20 4x a week. Combination of drive, train, tube, walk.
Suspicious_Side_3160@reddit
If you commute 1 hour each way that's 1/12 of your day spent commuting, 1 month of the year. Not surprised the mental health of the nation is in tatters
Wishmaster891@reddit
thats quite normal for a lot of london based jobs
thenewguy22@reddit
Yeah i love all these people who walk 8 minutes to work and expect that's the norm for the country. I'd rather pay more to live further from work!
Suspicious_Side_3160@reddit
Exactly. "Normal" isn't natural. We've failed as animals lol
lucylous2@reddit
I drive 25mins to my minimum wage job usually once a week 25mins back. I contemplate it being worth it a lot but I also wouldnt ever drive if I didnt go that far and im an anxious driver as is
rebelallianxe@reddit
Around an hour door to door, including a 10 minute walk to and from work car park. But I only have to go into the office once every 2 weeks, unless something randomly requires my physical presence on another day.
GetCapeFly@reddit
I’m a 10-20minute walk away depending which route I take.i previously had to commute two hours one-way and swore I’d never do it again.
Distant_Planet@reddit
10 mins walk to a bus stop; 15 mins on the bus to another stop; 30 mins on that bus; a couple of mins walk to my office. Factoring in waiting for the connection, it usually takes 1hr15. A bit longer if traffic is bad.
I would be ok with that, except I only live 7 miles from work. If there were a safe cycle route, it would be quicker to bike.
lookhereisay@reddit
25-30 min walk (uphill on the way home), 40 min train, 10 min walk. Plus a bit of waiting for trains and inevitable delays. It’s about 1.5 hours each way.
I work part-time so do this twice a week and wfh one day.
Much prefer wfh as I can do the school drop off and get to spend 5 hours with my son, rather than the 2.5 hours on a working day.
Don’t like my job. Pays well. Culture getting worse and my new job share is a total disaster. Working hard to hold my boundaries.
Rude-Possibility4682@reddit
10 min walk from my front door to work. Shortest I've ever travelled for work. For 9 years previous to this,it was an hour and ten commute On average over the years most commutes to my workplace were around the 35 min mark.
Life_Forever@reddit
I have been working from home since 2012. Love it. I have an office room so it doesn't feel like I'm living and working in the same place. No transportation to pay and deal with crazies and smelling people, can do chores during breaks which means I don't have to do house stuff when I'm back from work, can get deliveries whenever, I can rest during lunch break if needed, only advantages for me.
aje0200@reddit
Love my job but it’s an hour either way 5 days a week. Don’t like spending over 10% of my take home pay on diesel. But can’t afford to live nearer at the moment.
Gauntlets28@reddit
My commute is almost an hour each way, but only two days a week usually. They've introduced these futuristic new electric buses as of this week though, so I now feel fantastic travelling in. They have air conditioning!
connolan1@reddit
My worst commute was a 5 mile walk to a 90 minute train followed by another 15 minute walk. Now it's just a 15 minute walk to a crappy bus where I'm lucky if it even stops for me
InternetPerson00@reddit (OP)
What do you do? and do you mean you walk 15 mins to the bus stop?
lavayuki@reddit
15 mins by car. My job is ok, stressful at times. I don’t enjoy work though, for me it’s just a means to put food on the table.
Fourteas@reddit
3 minutes cycle or 10 minutes walk, love the job. I had the job first though, the house came later.
Cool-Doughnut-1489@reddit
Around 15-20 mins by bus. From my flat, to the lift and to the bus stop about 1-2 minutes. Totally walkable around 30-35 mins but my workplace is already stressful so I like some time to sit on the bus before the shift starts.
Adzx93@reddit
I've recently started taking public transport to a job I've worked at for 8 years. Previously my commute was around 40 mins in the morning, an hour in the evening (depending on traffic)
Now, it takes me a little over 2 hours in the morning, and up to 3 hours in the evening, unless I leave work bang on 5 pm to make it to the bus stop (bus from the office runs every hour/hour and 15 mins)..
It's definitely not a job I enjoy, definitely not worth the commute I'm currently doing but it's a job and pays the bills etc 🙄
MintyMarlfox@reddit
Work from home 99% of the time. The one percent is a 2 hour train into London and then 15 minute walk.
annoymousidea@reddit
10 minute walk from the house to work. And the job itself is tedious and repetitive. I’m ready for something new
DVLMN08@reddit
5 minute walk to the office, great work life balance to be able to work from the office 4 mornings a week to meet my 2 days a week
Robzillor@reddit
Really enjoy my job and it’s a 25 minute drive to the office through the countryside. It only takes me longer if I’m stuck behind someone doing 30 mph on a national speed limit road lol
plant-strong@reddit
Mine is a 13 minute cycle. In the spring and summer, on a dry day it’s lovely. On a rainy day, any time of year, it absolutely sucks shit.
It’s to a job I don’t mind.
Ldiablohhhh@reddit
1 hour 15 min drive roughly. 2 days a week though with the other 3 WFH. Would absolutely not be sustainable to do the commute 4/5 days a week and I'd walk immediately if 5 day office based work became mandatory.
rezonansmagnetyczny@reddit
10 minutes on bike.
30-40 minutes to walk.
Over an hour to drive.
Yeh city living is balls it you want to drive anywhere
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
10min walk to station, usually 5 min wait for train, 50min train journey and 10min walk to work. Almost always get a seat on train so can do stuff.
Your commute is a bit abnormal as fair bit of walking at quiet times. My partner walks to work - 35mins - and used to need to be at 6am. I worried in winter.
Wishmaster891@reddit
30 seconds
daisygiraffe13@reddit
I love my job, and my commute is a 25 minute drive.
I will say I hate my commute. Theres nothing particulary bad about it, im just really sick of doing it and there isn't a different route that I could take to change it up without adding an hour or so onto my journey so sod that lol
cactusdan94@reddit
10/11 minute drive.
If it make it through all the traffic lights i can do it in about 8.
Ashamed-Assumption12@reddit
Office day 1. Central London. 15 min drive to train station. 35 min train. 25 min tube, 10 mins walk to office.
Office day 2. Satellite office local. 10 min drive or 25 min walk.
Three days wfh.
Enjoy my job but it's full on and stressful.

A 15 min walk or 4 min cycle, guess Im lucky, only need to go into office 2 days per week.
muppetmat13@reddit
I wake up, walk to the next room and sit at my desk.
But for 2 years (2010-2012) my commute was the following:
6.15 - wake-up 6.30ish - Drive to my girlfriend's parents house (in the town centre of where I live) then 5 minutes walk to the train station. 7.10 - 1hr 20min train. 8.30ish - 15 minutes walk to work.
And then of course the reverse to get home...
I feel like I've earned my WFH status.
PowerPlayParadox@reddit
Between 45 - 75 mins each way depending on city traffic. Four on, four off shift pattern though so not 5 days a week. Job pays well enough for the hassle.
behemuffin@reddit
Currently a 20 minute walk or a three minute drive to a job I love with great people in a nice place. Up until a month ago, 1h15 on the motorway to a job that drove me bananas with boredom, and the pay was shit. Still great people, though.
TheRealPyroManiac@reddit
10 min drive to train station, 40 min journey, 15 min walk to office. It’s pretty shit but usually once or twice a week makes or bearable.

In terms of how long it takes, a lot of peoples commute is 45 minutes to an hour. Although i live in london and its uncommon that someone would have a 25 minute walk as part of their commute, public transport can usually you get you closer than that for most places in london, you may have to change buses, or get a bus then a tube etc.
My commute is pretty good. I cycle in to work mostly alongside the thames, its quite a nice stretch of the thames, and i love being near a body of water in general. I take the scenic route, and it takes me about 30 minutes to get in to work from home, could be 20 if i went the quickest route. I also really like my job, im a cargo bike rider for a company called freddies flowers, i cycle for ~ 8 hours a day, delivering boxes of flowers (and vases) almost all over london.
kittykat7931@reddit
I mostly work from home doing a job I love but if I have to go to my office it can take anything from 2 hours to 4 hours if something goes wrong on the M25 or Dartford Crossing. My role does require me to work across the eastern region though and depending on where I need to be and at what time of day, my journey will be anything from 5 minutes to 2 hours. The worst bit is some of the roads are really boring which can make it very tedious.
Organic-Violinist223@reddit
I work from home mostly but when I do commute it’s a 30 second walk to train station, 35 minute train ride then 20 min walk to the office!
iloovehugecock@reddit

fourthaccountlucky@reddit
If I leave at 6.50am it's a 45 mins drive, any later and it's anyone's guess. That's if I blag the one parking spot for our entire team. It's a 45 mins walk to train station and 20 mins on the train. I am well paid and the job itself is absolutely my bag, but the culture can be horrible, my boss is over-promoted (shouldn't be that senior) and I absolutely hate going to an office, having been a homeworker since before it was cool (2016). I'm not productive in an office and I lose time I could be working or training (put on mad timber since starting as used to be able to run 10-15km every day before work, have a shower and work whilst getting ready, drying my hair/ makeup etc). I'll make the changes that need to happen then look for a WFH job again when the market is a bit more settled
