Gen. Z can’t be bothered

Found this gem of a statement in another group from an 18 year old about why he doesn’t lock his car door: “it’s supposed to be chill here plus you have to do it manually.” Imagine the dilemma he would have if his car window cranked down like many of us grew up being driven around in?

My kids are both Gen Z. They are intelligent; so are their friends.
But… here’s the greatest Gen Z thing I’ve heard so far. My oldest son and his friends went (from Minnesota) to Austin, Texas for vacation. The group was headed out for a hike and were applying sunblock (liberally) before they headed out.
One of the friends declined the sunblock, as he was putting out some serious sunscreen vibes.
Auntie_Venom@reddit
😆 …And did he get fried?
Acceptable_Trash_749@reddit (OP)
That I get. But I really got the feeling that he would have locked the car if he could simply push a button on a remote.
acreekofsoap@reddit
Jeeps had roll up windows until the ‘25 model…
PurplePenguinCat@reddit
My Wrangler had zippered windows. It sucked when the zipper broke and I had to use safety pins to keep it closed. 🤣
HighSeasArchivist@reddit
More old man yells at cloud shit. You people need to get out and actually meet some younger kids, or gasp mentor some in something you are good at.
perhaps_too_emphatic@reddit
I mean I literally know people in neighborhoods where everybody leaves their doors unlocked because locking them results in broken glass. With unlocked doors there’s less damage and less theft in that area.
This logic really shifts if you’re in an area with bears though lol
I’d need more info before knowing who to side with on this one.

DeCoyAbLe@reddit
I still have to crank my windows :)
ONROSREPUS@reddit
I have 3 that way as well.
Acceptable_Trash_749@reddit (OP)
Three cars, or three out of four windows on one vehicle where to turn a crank to open or close them?
ONROSREPUS@reddit
3 cars total.
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
Why couldn’t Gen X raise kids with thicker skin?
brandysafinegirl@reddit
I’m convinced it’s because we all had parents that didn’t give a shit. I know in my case I was like I’m going to do everything my parents didn’t do. I told my kids I loved them all the time, I was affectionate. I was a room mom and Girl Scout leader, band mom with homework when they asked, etc…I did it all because my parents did nothing.
I thought I was doing a good thing in being the opposite of how they were but looking back now that they are just getting into adulthood, I did them a disservice by doing too much and enabling them. I was too involved. It’s like we all over corrected from what our parents did and raised a bunch of wus kids that have no coping skills. Ok that’s a little bit of a dramatization because they aren’t that bad but you know what I mean
Aggravating_Mix8959@reddit
Yeah my parents didn't know or cared what I did. They were not interested in me.
I never had kids of my own because I grew up thinking kids were an annoying burr on adult's sides.
Agent7619@reddit
You seem to care a lot for someone in the whatever generation.
Acceptable_Trash_749@reddit (OP)
Again, caring is different than finding it amusing.
YourGuyK@reddit
How is this possibly a thing anyone should care about?
Acceptable_Trash_749@reddit (OP)
There’s a difference between caring and finding something perplexing or humorous.
Johoski@reddit
WTF does this have to do with Gen X?
Stop shitting on younger generations.
ixnine@reddit
I think the appropriate response is “whatever”
PowerNinja5000@reddit
Back in my day (the 90s) I had to lock my car doors uphill both ways.
Johoski@reddit
And I opened and closed my car windows with a piece of string tied to a doorknob.
Acceptable_Trash_749@reddit (OP)
It has to do with differing generational attitudes to things and what they find inconvenient. It’s a compare and contrast thing. Perhaps you shouldn’t respond to posts that are tagged “Old Man Yells at Cloud. They seem to be triggering for you.
90Carat@reddit
Whenever I see posts about GenZ just wanting to let doors be unlocked or windows open, I just chock that up to inexperience. Never had your car broken into, or shit stolen? Just wait.
Acceptable_Trash_749@reddit (OP)
Remember when people would put signs in their windows saying “No Radio in Car?”
MrRetrdO@reddit
My last car sound system had the removable front plate. Without it, the radio was useless.
Acceptable_Trash_749@reddit (OP)
I remember those as well.
JediKrys@reddit
What kind of meltdown he would have if he had to push the window out towards the road to get it to roll all the way up.
yayayagilliganhell@reddit
They can't even cook or do laundry
ginger_kitty97@reddit
Mine can.
NotEasilyConfused@reddit
Mine, too.
Foamfollower_65@reddit
That would be a parenting problem.
ezgomer@reddit
and whose fault is that?
i_heart_nutella@reddit
We raised them.
draaz_melon@reddit
Some of us sound more like boomers every day.
JoeSicko@reddit
This whole thread is full of boomer-like rants. Yikes and whatever.
draaz_melon@reddit
Exactly
Sweaty-Seat-8878@reddit
friend of mine had someone “break” into his car rifle through all his cds and not take anything he was both relieved and insulted
Musicman1972@reddit
My mom had very similar. But the car was stolen and all my dad's CDs went too. My mom's though? Pulled neatly where the car used to be on the driveway.
She could accept the car going but not her MOR collection being left behind.
AriadneThread@reddit
This...is hilarious 😂
deemarieforlife@reddit
Same here, didn't take anything
grin_ferno@reddit
In the case where he grew up during that time like us, they'd probably do what we did?
Acceptable_Trash_749@reddit (OP)
Ask our parents to please buy a car with air conditioning next time only to be told ‘that will only decrease mileage and cost too much in gas? My mother bought manual transmission cars for the same reason. I still drive stick, but as someone else mentioned, it’s more like an anti theft device nowadays rather than a gas saver.
ooomellieooo@reddit
My asshole older brothers used to fill up super soakers with milk and spray it into people's open windows.
Roscoe-is-my-dog@reddit
I’m no thief, but I want to know where his car is parked to steal something, just to teach him a lesson.
GetGoatedYourself@reddit
Naa just re-adjust the review mirror, do this every other night.
Sad-Macaroon9067@reddit
We were looking at a new (to us) vehicle for my husband and found one with crank windows. We had a good laugh about the thought of putting the 12-year-old in with no instruction and asking for the window to be lowered.
TheEvilOfTwoLessers@reddit
I don’t think I bothered locking my car until I was 40.
themiracy@reddit
I only locked my car if it was in a sketchy place, although it had a locking glovebox. Now our new car actually locks itself when you walk away.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
I still don't. I don't leave anything in my car worth stealing either. Hell I leave the keys in the car when I park in the garage.
fireflypoet@reddit
Imagine if he had a horse and buggy!
this_kitty68@reddit
Imagine if he had to lock it with a key or hold the handle up while closing the door. lol
tandem_kayak@reddit
Oh man, I forgot about holding the door handle up while closing it to lock it.
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Or holding the push button.
grin_ferno@reddit
Are we assuming that the kid is mentally deficient? I'll go out on a limb and say he'd figure it out.
Over_Ad_688@reddit
Imagine having them having separate keys for the door and for the ignition.
umeboshiplumpaste@reddit
Meanwhile, I still see people using The Club on their steering wheels. (Makes me strangely happy to see it in the wild.)
Neophile_b@reddit
Yeah, I haven't locked my car doors in a long, long time. I just don't give a shit
PepsiOfWrath@reddit
Slackers! Wait, aren’t we supposed to be the slacker gen? Were the SubGeniuses wrong?

StereotypicallBarbie@reddit
As the parent of a 22 year old… I can tell you he just wafts through life never even closing a door behind him.. or putting a fucking sock in the laundry basket!
Musicman1972@reddit
I'm not sure I was putting socks in baskets in my early 20s either.
grin_ferno@reddit
Well, you should have taught him better.
StereotypicallBarbie@reddit
If I had a pound for every time I’ve asked or reminded him to do something… I wouldn’t be doing my own laundry!
Guess i must have failed at parenting then.. 🙄
sullen_agreement@reddit
young people these days amiright
Mumchkin@reddit
What would they do with a rotary dial?!
BillyCarson@reddit
My family had a couple of Jeep CJs with soft tops when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s, and they didn’t even have lockable doors. One of them did have a lock on the center console, but that was it.
DPax_23@reddit
Ummmm... my car window still cranks down. And its a stick. 😆
Sweaty-Seat-8878@reddit
i haven’t locked my car since i lived in NYC and it kept getting broken into…leave it open and save the window.
Plus mine looks like someone is living in it :) seems to deter theft.
I live in a city with a normal rate of city crime, i don’t lock it.
marssaxman@reddit
Same here - if I locked the car, someone would just break the window. Better to leave the car unlocked so that would-be thieves can see for themselves there's nothing in it without creating a hassle for me in the process.
lowfreq33@reddit
A lot of people don’t lock their car doors regardless of when they were born. If you don’t keep anything of value in your car it can be better to just let them look as opposed to having to replace a window, file an insurance claim.
thenoid42@reddit
I rarely lock my doors when I’m running in to a store or grocery shop, but I have an anti theft device - manual transmission.
elphaba00@reddit
It's not just Gen Z. It's Boomers. My mom questioned why I lock my car doors all the time. Why I lock my house. It's always, "It's a safe neighborhood. Nothing ever happens here." Or "We don't have anything anyone wants."
