How does holidays for 0 hour contract employees work?

I was under the impression that as an employee working 3 days a week and I wanted a week of holiday I would just book 3 days of in a week and I would be paid what I’m normally paid for a week. However according to my job I have to book 5 days off to be paid what I normally make in 3 days. Is this a legal format? Because at my old job which is under the same brand I would book 3 days off and get a full weeks pay.

If you are 0 hour, you don't need to "book" any days off, you simply inform them you are not available for work on x and y days.
You also are not entitled to paid days in the same sense as salaries employees with fixed hours and income. What you get instead, is a % added to your hourly pay, and it will show up on your payslip as holiday pay * hours worked in pay period.
So in practice, when you don't work, you don't get paid. When you do work, you get paid for your hours + pay in lieu of holidays.

I thought that but you do get holiday pay these days.

that sounds like the 12.06% system. There’s 2 systems my old job used that one. The one I am now calculates your average pay over the last 52 weeks to calculate holiday pay

You accrue holiday days based on hours worked, and then can use them and get paid.

Yeah i know that but is the method there using to calculate my pay correct? Like am I really supposed to use 5 days of my entitled holiday to book of a whole week to get paid the same for what I would make in three days.

Do you work compressed hours? E.g. 3x12 hours or something?
If not, and you're working 3x8 hours, are you saying they're asking you to book 5x8 as "holiday"? If so, that doesn't sound right as it should be 3x8 holiday and 2 non working days surely?

Exactly I work irregular hours but I work everywhere on average I work 2.5 days and yeah they’re saying I have to book 5x8 as holiday instead of 3 or 2x8
