First time parent with e biking

Hey as the post says. I’m inexperienced with traveling with children with e-bikes. My daughter is in toddler stage. I’m mostly looking for a bike to travel to local parks by us and grandmas house. ( she’s only 4 miles away). I really don’t need anything too powerful I really just need distance assistance. The most important thing in this post is we live with higher stealing in my neighborhoods. I want to get a e bike on the lower / resale scale. Something where I’m still going to be upset even if stolen. However I’m not destroying my heart in the process

I have two conflicting pieces of advice :-)
To deter theft, get a DIY conversion kit and put it on a cheap bike. If you keep the battery with you, there's not much value left to steal, and you are not out much in replacement cost either.
For safety with a toddler, you want something reliable, a well built bike with a good IP rating on the electronics, so it doesn't suddenly die on you at the worst possible time or worse, go into uncontrolled acceleration from water intrusion.

I didn’t think about water intrusion and what their effects are. Thank you. I’ve been thinking a lot about battery placement if I chose to go that route. There’s a bike shop not far from me that starts about 750 for bike conversion. It definitely has me leaning towards the higher end.

Do not go the bike conversion route. The brakes will not be sufficient.
Get a retail cargo bike. It should have preferably 4 piston hydraulic brakes AND the break lever will also have motor-cutoffs that conversions never have.

A good angle grinder proof lock is great and I also use a disc brake lock with an alarm , I also have an air tag with an alarm and an alarm with a remote that locks the alarm and any movement of the bike sets that off and I’ll take the battery 😂

The Aventon Abound SR is <2000 USD and is good cargo style bike for hauling kids. The LR is a little bit more expensive, but it can carry 2 kids in seats if you think you'll ever need that. I love the Thule Yepp seat for my toddlers. It also has a few extra security features like a locking kickstand to deter theft. Regardless of extra security features, get a good lock that is angle grinder resistant.

Far and away the best bikes for carrying kids are cargo bikes which will allow you to carry your kids for many years to come.
Theres a new generation of grinder resistant locks which are much tougher for thieves to get through so you may also want to get one of those.

You don't have to get a garbage bike to keep it safe. There are options for fold-up cargo bikes that will allow you to carry a child passenger and can go inside with you easily, so you don't have to keep it outside, even at the grocery store.
It's still best to have a good lock, of course, but a lot of real security is going to come from it being with you.
