Times up republicans- Texas is moving away from its abusive relationship with republicans.
Major_Shlongage@reddit
Please stop repeating false narratives.
For reference, back in school I was told that Texas was already purple and about to turn blue. We were told that this would be the last election with a Republican president due to the loss of Texas.
That was in 1988.
It's weird seeing people repeating these same claims perpetually, with no noticeable change. In 1988, Republicans won Texas 56% - 43%. In 2024, Republicans won Texas 56% - 43%
Complex_Win_5408@reddit
Texas is purple. It's just gerrymandered red. I hate these lazy responses that only want to bash people that are hopeful for positive change.
hunnyflash@reddit
Hopeful for a positive change? To what end? So they go home thinking things are going to change?
Be hopeful when change actually happens.
Complex_Win_5408@reddit
Be the change and stop crying troll.
Major_Shlongage@reddit
You're being delusional here. And it sounds like you lack education on the subject.
Texas is verifiably red.
Gerrymandering would only affect apportionment of votes for congressional districts- it wouldn't affect the raw vote numbers for Democrats/Republicans in a national election.
In 2024, 6,393,597 Texans voted for Trump, while 4,835,250 Texans voted for Harris. In no way, shape, or form was she going to win Texas. Gerrymandering had nothing to do with it.
Complex_Win_5408@reddit
Interesting hidden history too. Not the firstvstate sub you have trolled in. You know your comments can still be viewed?
Standard-Grape5330@reddit
It is more nuanced than this. The gerrymandering also causes Republicans to overrepresent in state-wide races because liberal voters tend to believe that their votes don't matter. If everyone eligible to vote in Texas actually voted, it is consistently seen that Texas would be purple to light blue.
That obviously doesn't happen here, but the voter suppression aims of the Republican party are 100% to keep the Democratic voters from actually making up any ground.
So yes, voting returns consistently show red beating blue, but the actual state demographic is much closer than the elections have been.
GeekyTexan@reddit
Your assumption that everyone who doesn't vote would vote blue seems very unlikely.
Standard-Grape5330@reddit
That’s not an assumption I’m making. There’s quite a bit of polling and statistics that show that the Democratic Party in Texas significantly underperforms, and would be competitive, if not outright win, at the state level if all registered voters actually cast a ballot.
Major_Shlongage@reddit
But younger people lean blue, and younger people also are the least likely to vote. So it doesn't require any kind of conspiracy to explain Texas's results.
GeekyTexan@reddit
Wishes and dreams don't change reality.
Major_Shlongage@reddit
This sounds conspiratorial to me, like it's activist drivel.
MephistoHamProducts@reddit
Texas is also heavily apathetic because there's been no real, functional Democratic Party here since the late 90s or early 2000s. Gilberto Hinojosa was the state party chair from 2012 to 2025 and kept that gig despite taking statewide loss after loss.
Here's a 1998 article - Who killed the Texas Democratic party? that showed remarkable foresight into how the Dems were going to get marginalized.
Here's a 2023 article about John Bryant returning to the Legislature after a few decades away and how broken the state party had become in the interim - This Democrat Is Back in the Texas Lege After 40 Years. He Can’t Believe How Bad Things Are.
I have some mild hopes for Kendall Scudder and rebooting the state level Democratic Party but I'm also burned out and into "God I hate the Democrats but I'm stuck with VBNMW" mode at this point.
GeekyTexan@reddit
People on Reddit just don't want to admit that, despite the GOP having essentially complete control of Texas for the past 25 years.

ShookMyHeadAndSmiled@reddit
Paxton only leads among Republicans. That poll doesn't reflect the overall electorate.
BigNastyG817@reddit
While true, remember republicans don’t vote with their morality. They vote for who will hurt liberals the most. Paxton is Trump 2.0. They love him for his racism and hate for the left. That goes a long way in this state.
So just temper your expectations.

Hang your hat on a political ideology - and a very small group of people walk away with most of the money.
lilghostdawg@reddit
Yeah, I don't buy the both sides are bad bullshit argument. Republican administrations do two things, start wars and cause economic recessions. Reagan, Little Bush, Pappa Bush, Trump and Trump again all caused recessions. Clinton left office with a budget surplus, Obama and Biden both pulled us out of recessions. Panama, Death Squads in Central America, Grenade, Gulf War part 1, Gulf War part 2, Afghanistan. And Republicans always cut the funding to the VA.

Republicans are the greatest threat to Americans we've ever seen. Have been for 70yrs, hopefully more people wake up to that fact.
Carey251@reddit
I would say they are def not the lesser of 2 evils but let’s not pretend either side really has our best interest at heart.
Cost of rent, utilities, healthcare, and education has gone up drastically with both parties in office. Big tech and personal freedoms have been or are under attack under both parties. Both parties bend over for corporations that prey on us, make our lives harder, poison our food, and don’t value our overall well being. Both sides are setup so 90% of us can make 10% very well.
steamyglory@reddit
Progress is made one step forward at a time, and one party is actively moving backward. Republicans are more than conservative. They are reactionary and regressive.
Carey251@reddit
You will still will be governed by corporations— it will just be different corporations. Most Americans will still be living paycheck to paycheck, unable to afford to retire, unable to afford to educate themselves, unable to afford healthcare, and unable to find employment as both sides pander to big tech and automation, but hey, one is a little better than the other.

This is false to me. Which party is actively taken away a women's right to choose? Which party is actively supporting a felony, with a history of sexual abuse against women and minors and found guilty under civil law of race? Which party is committing war crimes? Which party has done more damage to American leadership than any other time in history? Which party refuses to open the House due to not wanting to impeach a felony child rapist and his stooges for said war crimes? Which party has forced a shut down due to wanting to fund a federal department that is currently violating the constitution and killing citizens?
No, right now, this is not a both parties are the same.

"America can't exist without Texas being red." What the fuck is that supposed to mean. What he means is that their policies have finally caught up to them. Trump is the very embodiment of everything they have pushed for and said/intended under their breath for those 23 years he talks about. Dan Patrick is not from Texas. Dan Goeb Patrick is from Baltimore Maryland and came to Texas in '79. He became a conservative talk show host, then ran for office. He tried real work once, opening a bunch of sports bars that went bankrupt so he went back to being a radio host. So his bankrupt past and his bankrupt soul are now, finally, scared. GOOD! Get him out of there.
MephistoHamProducts@reddit

Yeah to your last point. The guy didn't win in the reddest or red places in the state because Democrats rose up. iainttalkinbook@reddit
In my opinion, the word “unknown” is doing an extreme amount of heavy lifting here. The Republican party has been this way since the 70s. This was always the end game and that's been obvious for literally decades. They're the dog that caught the car, and now watching them get exposed as the oligarchical un-Americans they have always been is excruciating, in part because of the amount of people that are like "well, I used to be an R but not now!" Lmao then when? Are you 90 and voted for them in the 1950s?
Republicans are bad people. I'm 40 and they've been bad people my entire life. They're an existential danger to democracy and American freedom and that's not even an exaggeration. I'm not trying to attack you but I just find these comments bewildering. They've so obviously supported oligarchs, religious extremism, climate change deniers, surveillance technology for literally decades. Every Republican could disappear from the face of the earth tomorrow and literally every aspect of life would improve for everyone left.
